PRESIDENT'S WELCOME
How do you follow up a conference filled with Pure Imagination? By Defying Gravity! Our next semi‐annual conference is here and I am extremely excited to welcome you to the product of the hard work and collaboration of so many wonderful folks. We have been defying gravity all year long and we do not intend to stop now. We are excited you are joining us in Louisville, Kentucky for what promises to be another memorable conference!
As always, we are thankful for the work of our conference Co‐Chairs Chester Priest and Roxy Lewis, as they lead an amazing conference lineup. Back by popular demand, KASFAA is offering pre‐&‐post conference opportunities to attend NASFAA U training events, with the option to earn nationally recognized credentials. There is also the option for folks to attend the New Aid Officers Workshop that is available for your offices' new or upcoming financial aid administrators. Whether you are brand new to the profession or increasing your skill sets, we have the added events to maximize your professional development dollars.
The main conference is packed. Megan McClean Coval with our National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators will be joining us to provide an insider's perspective on the policies shaping up in Washington, DC. Kentucky's very own SASFAA President‐Elect, Bryan Erslan will keep us up to date on the latest activities and opportunities within our region. In addition, we will have two special guests from GASFAA: President Stephen Anderson and President‐Elect Amber Singletary. As we continue our focus on student advocacy, Erin Howard, Latino Outreach Director for Bluegrass Community & Technical College, will be presenting the issues surrounding Kentucky's Dreamer population. And on top of our informative Federal Update with our most‐beloved Fed, David Bartnicki we are excited to announce that we are also welcoming back Department of Education guru, Wood Mason. You will not be disappointed.
In addition, the Board wanted to try something new by making this conference's charity one that will benefit you—the membership. We are working hard behind the scenes on a new scholarship account for members seeking the opportunity for professional development beyond what KASFAA can offer. Our focus, this entire year, has been you. We hope, when you see the final details, you will be more engaged, more proud of your service with KASFAA, and more excited about what is to come.
Finally, after a very long absence, KASFAA is bringing back the annual Election Results & Awards Dinner. This will be a fun and more formal evening as we celebrate one another and the successes of our colleagues. There will be several surprises. This is something you will want to attend. It will be, without a doubt, an evening to remember. This will be my last major event as President of KASFAA. Let us end it on a high—Defying Gravity!
It has been an honor,
Michael Birchett KASFAA 2017‐2018 President

PROGRAM COMMITTEE
Together, with our committee, Chester and I are pleased to welcome you to the KASFAA Spring conference as we look forward to Defying Gravity. We hope that throughout the conference your knowledge soars to new heights, that you connect with colleagues new and old, and that you enjoy the experience. Spend time with your KASFAA family to discuss important national and state legislative changes, work together to provide the best student experience for students, and then go back feeling lighter than air to your respective offices ready for the next day! Throughout the conference we will be hosting general sessions on federal and state legislative issues relating to financial aid, DACA awareness, a KHEAA update from its new CEO, and a Federal Update with Dave Bartnicki. Don’t forget to help out our charity, KASFAA scholarships, by donating funds, bidding on a gift basket, or by purchasing raffle tickets. Visit the Vendor Area to make connections with lenders and those who may have a solution to a business process/operation you are trying to solve. Breaks will be held in the vendor area so grab a soft drink and mingle with our vendor friends! We are hosting sector meetings for this conference so issues facing each sector can be discussed and new connections can be made across the state! Also back for this conference is the Thursday night awards dinner and election results. Please make plans to attend and celebrate our members. A special thank you goes out to Kelsey Berry and Daniel Orr from Georgetown College for overseeing and designing our logo, Julie Clay with KHEAA/KHELSC for assisting with graphics, Beth Mitchell for loaning and operating sound equipment, and to Terri Thomas from the University of Kentucky, for her creative vision in bringing the conference to life via decorations! Last but not least, the Conference Committee would like to thank each of you for taking time out of your busy schedules in April to attend this conference! We trust you will not regret it! Sincerely, Roxy Lewis, Spring Conference Co‐Chair Chester Priest, Spring Conference Co Chair

CHARITY
This year’s charity is raising money for soon‐to‐be‐announced scholarship opportunities aimed at assisting
financial aid administrators throughout their ever‐changing careers and experience levels. These scholarship
opportunities will seek to honor KASFAA members who have made, or are making, great advances for the
Association and its mission. You currently have the opportunity to recommend the name of a financial aid
professional for one of these honors. The individuals can be currently active or retired from the profession; they
can be living or deceased. What matters is that they made a difference in the lives of many, in at least one of
the two following areas:
Scholarship One (the person who comes to mind when you think “KASFAA”, “MENTOR”, & “ENCOURAGER”):
• Identified and engaged new or emerging financial aid professionals
• Served as a mentor to beginners in the financial aid profession
• Encouraged young financial aid professionals to develop their skills and talents
• Encouraged young financial aid professionals to get involved with KASFAA on some level
• Encouraged young financial aid professionals to pursue initial leadership and beginning management
opportunities
Scholarship Two (the person who comes to mind when you think “KASFAA”, “LEADERSHIP”, &
“PROFESSION”):
• Served in multiple leadership areas within the KASFAA Board
• Has an established track record of service to KASFAA
• Has acquired an impressive resume in multiple areas of professional leadership and development
• Has chartered new or difficult ground in areas of leadership, policy, administration, or institutional
endeavors
• Leadership and service to other boards (e.g., SASFAA, NASFAA, etc.) is beneficial (but not required)
You still have the opportunity to submit to us a name, or multiple names, along with a brief justification for your
nomination. A simple suggestion via email will suffice. I know your time is precious, but your input is extremely
important. These honors will be announced at the Awards Dinner on Thursday evening.
There are several ways conference attendees can help!
Donations: We are looking for donations and baskets from schools and organizations for the silent auction. We encourage basket donations that do not include school or organization logos, when possible, to appeal to the largest bidding population; however, any donated item is always welcome and appreciated. Additionally, we are also encouraging smaller item donations from schools or individuals that can be used as raffle giveaways.
Cash: We encourage you to bring cash to participate in the silent auction and raffle!

Amber Singletary Beginning as a Graduate Assistant in the Financial Aid Office at Georgia Southern University, Amber simply did not realize that she had stepped into a job that would quickly become a passion and later lead into a truly rewarding career. In 2014, she decided to take a leap of faith and accept the Associate Director of Financial Aid position in Rome, GA. Relocating to an area with no family or friends, it was the support of her colleagues through GASFAA that helped make the transition easier. Over the last five years she has had the pleasure of serving on the GASFAA Executive Board in a variety of different roles. Being an active member and volunteer of GASFAA has helped her to grow professionally and personally.

Stephen Andersen has been rockin the Financial Aid scene since 2009 where he started his career as a Loan Analyst at Shorter University in Rome, Georgia. He is currently the Executive Director of Financial Aid at Georgia Northwestern Technical College, which has the most amazing staff that live, breath and eat Financial Aid. Prior to financial aid, Stephen served in the United States Marine Corps as a helicopter door gunner and a Weapons and Tactics Instructor. He met his wife of ten years while serving overseas in Iraq, they have a rambunctious six year old that keeps them both on their toes. Aside from being a Marine Veteran, a Financial Aid guru, and just an all‐around great guy, he is passionate about this industry and loves serving the students in his community.
