Keramiek & Glaskunst zijn twee disciplines die gecombineerd worden aangeboden in de studierichting Vrije Kunsten van Sint-Lucas Beeldende Kunst in Gent. Het atelier Glaskunst & Keramiek stelt de omgang met de materie centraal in het beeldend creatieproces. Dit wil zeggen dat het blazen van warm glas en het werken met klei uitdaagt tot het ‘denken met de handen’. Hierin is ruimte voor zowel autonoom werk, installaties en performances, als ontwerp dat aansluit bij design. Deze uitwisseling tussen beeldende kunst en design in een hedendaagse context, staat dan ook centraal in de opleiding. Gastdocenten worden uitgenodigd om een uitdagende ruimte van mogelijkheden te openen in dit creatieproces vanuit hun specifieke professionele ervaring. De eerste pagina’s van deze brochure laten zien hoe deze ruimte verkend wordt in collectief verband. De daarop volgende pagina’s tonen een glimp van het individuele werk van studenten.

Ceramics and Glass Art are the two interactive disciplines offered by the Visual Arts department at Sint-Lucas Beeldende Kunst in Ghent. The studio emphasizes the role of the material in the creative process: the blowing of warm glass and the manipulating of clay challenge the artists to “think with their hands,” whether they are executing autonomous art, installations, performances, or design concepts. The interaction of art and design in a contemporary context is the focus of the studies. Visiting professors are invited to open the doors to provocative and challenging fields correlating with their own experiences and expertise. The first pages of this brochure deliver proof of how these fields are collectively explored. The following pages present impressions of the work created by each student individually.

MOMENT VOOR KLEI,

KERAMIEK EN GLAS

Keramiek & Glas is een atelier met een open blik. Artistiek werk gaat er alle richtingen uit. Klei is er nu eens werkmateriaal voor boetseren, draaien, slib gieten, bakken, glazuren; en glas een warme massa die men blaast en vormt of als koud materiaal bewerkt. Technieken zijn daarbij uitdagingen voor vakkennis en experiment. Dit geldt ook voor tradities: ze blijven intrigeren maar worden even graag onderuitgehaald. Het resultaat is abstract of figuratief, uniek gevormd of in een mal herhaald, maar gaat niet uit van een vastgelegde hiërarchie tussen materiaal, techniek en concept.

Ongeacht de schaal wordt er graag met een vorm van ‘tonen’ gespeeld. Planken worden altaars voor kleine beeldjes, glazen vormen liggen breekbaar of gebroken op lange tafels, tegels worden schilderijen tegen een wand, borden verdwijnen onder tekeningen vol beweging. Het zijn maar enkele manieren waarop dit tonen bewust in de materiële vorm wordt ingebouwd. De werken zoeken de blik van de toeschouwer en beginnen een gesprek dat verleidt en botst, in een discursieve ruimte waarin elk werk zich sowieso plaatst.

Wat staat, ligt of hangt, is niet noodzakelijk op de draaischijf of werktafel gemaakt, maar kan een restant zijn van een performance of ruimtelijke installatie. Klei, keramiek en glas kunnen dan zelfs volledig hun plaats afstaan aan ander materiaal, bijvoorbeeld houtskool waarmee een volledige kamer zwart wordt ingekleurd. Het proces is intiem en overweldigend, zoals ook de relaties met klei en glas dat kunnen zijn. Daarnaast is klei ook een grondsoort. Nieuwsgierig worden de eigenschappen ervan geanalyseerd in een project dat op zoek gaat naar de ontmoeting van zout en zoet in een door water beïnvloed landschap. Wat in K&G wordt gemaakt situeert zich in een ruime context en sluit aan bij de complexiteit van de hedendaagse kunst. Of het beweegt in de richting van toegepaste kunst die zich zonder schroom ook ongepast durft te gedragen.

SETTING THE TONE FOR CLAY,

CERAMICS, AND

GLASS

Ceramics & Glass is a studio for open minds. Here, creative workers explore in every direction. Here, clay is the medium for modelling, turning, mud throwing, baking, glazing; and glass is a warm mass that gets blown and shaped, or is taken on as cold material. All applied techniques are challenges to expertise and endeavor. Traditional approaches do remain intriguing; nevertheless they are toppled over without remorse. In the end, there are either abstract or figurative results, unique pieces or work to be repeated in molds—but never was the end reached along established hierarchic lines between material, technique and concept.

Whatever the scale of their work, the artists set the tone not just with their unconventional approach; they also play creatively with the presentation of their work. Boards become altars for small sculptures; glass shapes, breakable or already broken, are put up on long tables; tiles become wall paintings; plates disappear beneath drawings exploding with movement. The presentation of the creations is conscientiously built into their material forms. The pieces are begging for the eye of the beholder and are eager to open up a conversation; they display their willingness to both seduce and shock in the inevitable discourse.

Whether standing or hanging, no piece was per se created on the turntable or workbench; it can be the residue of a process, a performance, or a three-dimensional installation. Clay, ceramics and glass even can give over to a different material such as charcoal to blacken a whole room. The process is intimate and at the same times as overpowering as the relationship with clay or glass can be.

Yet clay is also just soil, mud. Curiosity leads to the analyses of its components and behaviors in a project that discovers the meeting of salt and sweet in a landscape much influenced by water. Anything created at Ceramics & Glass has a broad context and seamlessly attaches itself to the present-day complexity of contemporary art. Even in the form of applied art, it shows no fear of unseemly behavior.
