AFN has built over 80 schools in Nepal over the past 16 years. AFN’s longstanding relationship with the Nepali Ministry of Education and construction expertise paired with Kids of Kathmandu’s work with children enables our partnership to provide a complete 21st century educational experience for the students and teachers.

With our international partnerships and local Nepali staff, we are determined to raise the bar for public education in remote regions of Nepal and provide a model for others to follow as the necessary rebuilding of schools continues.

Our comprehensive plan ensures that the children and their communities will benefit from support systems that provide clean water, solar power, computers and internet access. These support systems will succeed through proper training for the kids, teachers, and families.

Our collective experience enables us to complete this task in a thoughtful and responsible way that ensures the children attending these 50 schools are given the opportunity to become productive and thoughtful individuals in an ever changing society.

Kids of Kathmandu and our Nepali/Japanese partners at Asian Friendship Network (AFN), have the privilege of rebuilding 50 public schools serving 10,000 kids in the areas hardest hit by the April 25th, 2015 earthquake in Nepal.

In response to the earthquakes, our partnership funded, delivered, and assembled custom fabricated waterproof tents to function as classrooms soon after the earthquake. The tents were installed before monsoon in remote villages where our new school construction is taking place, and have been crucial to continuing the children’s education.

Kids of Kathmandu provided stationery, pencils, footballs, and whiteboards for 10,000 kids in the villages where we will be constructing schools. The school supplies help the children continue their learning without the added burden of replacing supplies lost in the earthquake. Sports equipment was also provided to give the children a chance to play and find a level of normalcy that has been missing since the earthquake.

The process of providing relief supplies has been instrumental in establishing a trusting relationship with the villages we are working with to build the schools.

Each school will be outfitted with computers for the children and the community. The computers and connected internet will allow the school children and the villagers to become participants in the greater world community. Our partner OLE Nepal will provide each school with an offline digital library and extensive lesson plans developed with the Nepali ministry of education for the students and teachers.

e-Education is creating a series of DVDs with grade 10 lessons to help the older students pass the all important School Leaving Certificate (SLC.) Passing the SLC for grade 10 boys and girls is essential towards continuing with their future education.

Oversight of the construction of the 50 schools is crucial to assuring that the engineering and safety features of the designs are strictly adhered to during construction. With Rooster Logic’s REMO project management software, our partners, funders and most importantly the students can be assured that the schools are built to exceed the most stringent building codes in Nepal.

Nepal Wireless will provide internet to every viable school through their network of repeaters and relay stations providing quality connectivity and services to a much neglected communities throughout rural Nepal.

The longer term plans for Nepal Wireless include telemedicine, overseas calls, agricultural cooperatives, e-banking and e-commerce services.

Smart Paani is installing Biosand filters to purify water for schools in all 50 schools. The effects of purified water for the children and community are immediate and long lasting.

The system will provide surplus water for the students to take home to their families. Where there is no reliable water source, we will provide water harvesting for the schools and community.

The benefits of electricity to the learning experience are numerous and with the introduction of computers and internet connectivity crucial. At schools not presently served by community hydro-power stations, One Planet Solution will provide solar power to the school.

The benefits of purified water will be extended to the community through the use of the PackH2O. We will be distributing 5,000 PackH2Os to the students to transport purified water from school to home. The ergonomic and safe storage offered by the Pack will help women and children minimize the time spent collecting and storing purified water.

Mpowerd will be providing Luci inflatable solar lights to students so they can walk home safely and study after sunset.

As important as the school building and support systems are to improving the education of the children, we feel that teacher training is essential to providing a true 21st century education to the children. Kids of Kathmandu and Asian Friendship Network will be working with a variety of groups to provide progressive training to the entire staff of the schools. The details of this project are still in process.

As each permanent school comes on line, we will provide WaSH, health, and hygiene training as well as basic first aid to the teacher and students. There are numerous misconceptions about basic health and hygiene that ultimately keep the children away from school that can be resolved with health education.

Kids of Kathmandu and our many partners have done a great deal of work to ensure that the 50 schools we rebuild in rural Nepal will be safe and affordable. Our design and engineering work allows us and other groups to maximize our donors’ dollars to provide a 21st century educational experience to prepare the children for their future in this ever evolving country.

The architectural plans have taken into consideration the need for natural light, ventilation, community space, construction, and material transportation costs. Because of the different needs of Primary schools versus Secondary schools, SHoP Architects, along with engineering from Big Future Group, have designed two similar, but unique building systems for the two school types.

Incorporating concrete slab foundations, resilient earth brick walls, and steel truss roof systems, the new school buildings are designed from the ground up to survive future quakes intact. The design of the schools also forefronts the creation of an environment that supports learning and community engagement with classrooms arranged to provide ample light and air.

Each school will also contain a purpose-built library and kitchen, available to the community as well in times of need. Sheltered spaces for gathering are created by the broad overhangs of the angled roof, and all exterior walls are left purposefully smooth and blank to encourage the vibrant local tradition of mural art.

The design is a comprehensive solution to a variety of community needs, is a flexible “kit-of-parts” that is adaptable to the different, and often extreme, conditions across the many sites. As construction will involve local volunteer labor, overseen by hired contractors, architects and engineers, the system is explained using easy to read assembly diagrams along with the technical drawings.

All of the partner’s designs, engineering and construction management processes will be posted online for free for other individuals or groups, with assistance from a local architect, to build one of our designs without incurring the cost of design development or engineering. The Nepali Ministry of Education has approved our designs and engineering allowing other groups an expedited approval process when submitting their plans for approval. The time and cost savings will allow groups to build more schools, in a shorter period of time, for the foreseeable future

An accompanying online manual will layout the materials and tools needed to build a school as well as the step by step process on proper fabrication techniques to erect the school building using trained contractors and local residents.

Earth brick construction is a proven and inexpensive method to create structures which are both safe and can be built quickly. Along with earth brick and rebar, we will be using steel trusses for the roof and supports where needed. This chosen building technique has evolved over time to provide earthquake resistant, comfortable structures that best make use of local volunteer labor, enabling members of each community to participate in the building of its school.
