SAFE MOORING AND WORKING GUIDE(OCIMF)

Masters of the Vessels are responsible for thefollowing mooring practices:

* Any known defect in the Vessel'smooring system or limitation of mooringwinch brakes should be reported to the Pilotand to the Terminal before arrival in orderthat, if necessary, additional precautions maybe agreed.* Ensure that their Vessels areproperly secured alongside with adequateropes or wires, and that all mooringequipment is in good condition.* Ensure that a strict watch is kepton their Vessel mooring system, and that theyare tendered as required to prevent slack orover tight lines and undue movement of theVessel.* Where wires are used theyshould be of a similar breaking load to that ofthe ropes.* It is recommended that wiresshould be used for all mooring lines.* It is not recommended thatsynthetic ropes and wires be used leading inthe same direction, to the same fast releasehook or bit.* Ensure that the Vessel mooringropes are fastened only to the proper fixturesprovided for this purpose.* Springs should be as long aspossible, and it is recommended that wiresare used and secured to the mooring points ofthe jetty. In case of using bitts for fasteningthe wires ashore (instead of fast releasehooks), it is recommended to use wires fittedwith synthetic fibre rope tails of at least 25%greater breaking load than the wire.* Provide full power or steam ondeck to all mooring winches throughout theperiod vessels are alongside the jetty.* As soon as Vessel is positioned,positively secure the manual brakes on allmooring winches. Winches must not be lefton automatic tension mode.* Masters should ensure thatmooring lines are in good condition.
