Kurt had always loved to draw and build, but chose to go to university for psychology. At 25 he made the boldest (and best) decision of his life, and went back to school to study Industrial design. He enjoys the problem solving aspect of design, and the chance to interact with other people through the things he designs.

+SPARA Small Ambulance for the Urban Paramedic

Winner of: 1st Place, Eventscape Innovation in Design Award 1st Place, Keilhauer Innovation in Design Award

Page 5: Kurt Scanlan Portfolio

3

Goal:Design an ambulance ideal for dense urban environments that maximizes paramedic Safety, Comfort, and Utility.

Page 6: Kurt Scanlan Portfolio

11

Current Ambulances are Too Big

They can be bogged down in traffic

New Technology has made large ambulances unnecessary

Limited Maneuverability in tight Quarters

High environmental and operating cost

Spara ‘s battery electric powertrain and small size reduces its carbon footprint. Being a purpose-built vehicle as opposed to an aftermarket conversion streamlines manufacturing and reduces environmental impact per vehicle manufactured.

Being a Paramedic is Grueling

EMTs can spend more than 8 hours at a time in

their vehicles

Shifts can be as long as 20 hours Eating on the go is a must

Mental and physical fatigue leads to injury or life-threatening errors--

15

Being a Paramedic is Dangerous

Restraints inhibit movement so are rarely used

Unsecured gear becomes a projectile in a crash

Side-facing seats increase risk of injury

In the U.S. one paramedic is killed in a crash every week

---

Buckle Up Front-facing power chair lets the EMT work while safely belted.

+

Equipment can be reached while seated, and integrated seat beat means the EMT can always be buckled in

Seat enables EMT to access the patient, and allows better face to face interaction.

Saddlebags on either side of the chair allow access to most used items

Front-facing poweredchair can move forward and back on a track in the floor

All equipment is built into the structure to prevent injury in a crash

2022300033STEER USING THE WINDLarge vertical ailerons use oncoming air to push the front of the car left or right, allowing it to "fly" around corners.

This allows increased cornering speeds, less energy wasted through breaking, and less tire wear.

The result:lower lap times and fewer pit stops.

Because the turning force is generated from the air moving around the car, thinner

Electroactive Polymers

The front struts and hubs are m ade of a type of plastic that changes shape when an electric current is run through it.

As the components change shape they direct the wheels and the steer-ing ailerons.

This eliminates moving parts for increased durability over a grueling 24 hour race.

External TelemetryA ring of LEDs communicate driving inputs. Intense inputs will lead to more intense light: red for breaking and blue for acceleration. This adds another level of interaction with spectators, both at the track and watching on TV.

Imagine being able to easily see which drivers are pushing the pace, and which are conserving fuel or tires.

The Kia K4 is zippy and fun during the daily commute, but is equally at home on the track. It is a perfect way for the motoring enthusiast to experience the thrill of racing without breaking the bank.

Inspiration was taken from LMP1 race cars, which use dramatic channels to reduce weight and increase smooth air flow.

VaantoScandinavian inspired chair for modern condo living

Page 26: Kurt Scanlan Portfolio

24

Condo Living is becoming more and more popular in dense urban environments. In these small spaces the kitchen island has replaced the dining room.

Vaanto is a Scandinavian inspired chair designed to turn the kitchen island into a vibrant social space.

Page 27: Kurt Scanlan Portfolio

25

Page 28: Kurt Scanlan Portfolio

26

The problem with sitting at a kitchen island, or any bar for that matter, is that it limits social interaction. People do not face one another, and those on the end of the row are left out of social interactions.

Vaanto’s curved back encourages people to turn in to the conversation, heightening the dining experience. Designed in collaboration with Jason Macdonald and Loussine Ayrapetyan
