Course outline

• Aim- To give a broad introduction to the interdisciplinary

field of micro- and nanotechnology and will highlightbasic concepts of microfluidics with emphasis on “Lab-on-a-chip” systems for biological applications.

• After the course, you will be able to:- Describe the concept of “ Lab-on-a-chip ”- Describe the main microfabrication technologies

used to microfabricate microchips and chose the

appropriate material and design of micro- andnanostructures for a given biological problem- Explain potential and limits of microfluidics and

suggest strategies to handle challenges.- Participate in scientific discussions & Identify future

trends in this field.

A: the red (bigger) particles will come out first (Right arm up)

B: the green (smaller) particles will come out first (Left arm up)C: Both particles will come out at the same time (stand up)

1 minute to think ! discuss with each other

Question: which of the particles willcome out first?

Green

particles flow faster through the channel and are detected first

Laminar flow " parabolic flowprofile " Particles flowingat the center are

traveling fastercompared to theparticles close tothe walls

Particles are affected different byb an external field

Question: which of the particles willcome out first?
