Why act in favour of entrepreneurship ?

5

An entrepreneur is someone who creates or develops a business, of course, but his contributionto the economic landscape goes far beyond. Certainly, in addition to playing a crucial part in jobcreation processes, entrepreneurs innovate by proposing new products, new organization andmanagement models.

Two Citizen Entrepreneurs’ initiatives were key in 2015:

1/ The need to create favorable conditions for a strong and a sustainable entrepreneurialculture. A recent EY report, “From Classroom to Boardroom”, calls governments to develop clearpolicies to promote efficient and sustainable entrepreneurship through their countries’educational systems:

• Governments must initiate and set up programs promoting entrepreneurial culture in theeducational system of each country so as to familiarize young people with theentrepreneurship spirit as early as possible

• The EY report makes six recommendations to help G20 countries to promote this aspectin local educational systems through training and an early introduction to theimplications of what is meant by “entrepreneurial culture”.

2/ Innovation as the main trigger for world growth

In a digital economy, cooperation between big and small size firms is an imperative. It stimulatesjoint-innovation and represents a growth opportunity of 1500 billion dollars

The Accenture report, “Harnessing the power of entrepreneur to Open Innovation” points to theongoing dissonances between culture and mentality of start-ups and big size companies adissonance that inhibits effective joint innovation.

The report also proposes recommendations to G20 governments and calls for the involvement ofthe public sphere to trigger a common brainstorming on innovation processes on a larger scale.

The report stands for:

• The enlargement of SME’s financing models (crowdfunding and venture capital)

• The creation of cooperative networks such as the “innovation ecosystem’ model

• A call for a borderless world to support digital trade

“Harnessing the power of digital collaboration to drive a culture of entrepreneurship and innovation” by Accenture Accenture is convinced that entrepreneurs and big size companies have to cooperate more and more tightly to answer the imperatives of speed in innovation and in the making of their projects. This report underlines how the disruptive model of start-ups challenge the habits of historical companies and points that :

“From classroom to boardroom: creating a culture for high impact entrepreneurship” by EY Entrepreneurship in one of the means to solve the issue of youth unemployment and to give future entrepreneurs all the tools for success: the learning of an entrepreneurial culture is essential for them. This EY report provide the G20 countries’ governments with solutions simple to implement in the very short and mid-term. Here are those that Citizen Entrepreneurs has chosen to pass on to the French Government: - to teach the rules of entrepreneurship at school since the youngest age to learn concretely the basic functioning of a firm (budget & balance sheet) and to get an entrepreneurial state of mind (risk, team work, problems solving, the apprenticeship of failure)

Remarkable reports

- Big size companies expect to draw 28% of their revenues from technologies, digital products and services along the next 3 years against 16 % today. In France, the expectation is of 20% for the next 3 years against 13% today

- 82 % of big size companies assert that they can learn from start-ups regarding the digitalization of their activity (68% in France) and 46% among them feel like cooperating with start-ups to keep on innovating (51% in France)

- Big size companies are now aware of this necessity to cooperate, a feeling that both parties experienced differently: while ¾ of big size companies declare to be satisfied, only half of the start-ups think alike. The reason for this discrepancy relies in a different level of implication.

- An open innovation cooperation pattern means : - a cultural alignment in the field of initiative and risk,

the implication of numerous stakeholders and a more equal distribution of fees – a development of the entrepreneurial digital technology organized with more fluidity and in a more open way such as plate-forms of data, ideas and goods do.

- to promote entrepreneurial learning all along school and university times before entering professional life with a special focus on apprenticeship and training - to set up training programs all along professional life enabling systematic upgrades to better answer firms ‘needs for competencies.
