FATHER PANAGIOTI, WELCOME TO CHARLOTTESVILLE! Effective September 1, Father Panagioti Robert Hanley will serve our parish as our permanent, full time priest. Father Panagioti, who is originally from Paramus, NJ, has lived in several states from the East Coast to the Southwest. Prior to devoting his life to the ministry of the Church, he worked in public service (law enforcement), in both civilian and military capacities. In 2002, after being Honorably Discharged from the U.S. Air Force, he entered the Seminary at the Hellenic College and Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, receiving his Bachelor Degree in 2005 and his Masters of Divinity Degree in 2008. He was ordained to the Holy Deaconate in 2007 and to the Holy Priesthood in 2014. Father Panagioti served as the Assistant Priest at Saint Katherine Greek Orthodox Church in Falls Church, VA, before being appointed to our parish. Father Panagioti, welcome to our parish! PARISH COUNCIL The Feast Day of our church (Transfiguration) was celebrated with Vesper Services on August 5 with nine priests, one deacon, three pastoral assistants, one seminarian, and one Hellenic College student participating. LADIES PROGRESSIVE SOCIETY (LPS) The LPS was once again delighted to honor a member of our parish as Father of the Year. Our 2015 Father of the Year, George Mastakas, instills his love of church and community to his children through example. Over the years, George was president of our Parish Council, while his sons have served in the Altar and his wife and his daughter are involved with Sunday School activities. He has volunteered his time and talent to teach us how to bake Prosforon and how to assemble Koliva. In a few years, he will be Father George to many; however, in 2015 he is our Father of the Year. The LPS will meet in the Hellenic Center’s conference room on August 30 and September 27 following the coffee hour. DAUGHTERS OF PENELOPE (DOP) The DOP will meet on Sunday, September 13 and October 11, at 12:30 pm, at The DoubleTree on 29 North. SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2015  UPCOMING EVENTS Parents,  please  register  your  children  for  Sunday  School  on  Sunday,  August  30.    This  procedure  will  allow  our  Sunday  School  teachers  to  adequately  prepare  for  the  2015/16  session.    Registration  will  take  place  in  the  Hellenic  Center  following  The  Divine  Liturgy.    Following  The  Divine  Liturgy  on  Sunday,  September  6,  you  are  cordially  invited  to  attend  a  reception  to  welcome  Father  Panagioti  to  our  parish.    The  2015/16  Sunday  School  year  will  begin  on  Sunday,  September  13.    Immediately  following  Holy  Communion,  students  and  teachers  will  depart  from  church  and  meet  in  the  Hellenic  Center  for  classes.        Mark  your  calendar  and  plan  to  attend  the  Student  Luncheon  on  Sunday,  October  4,  following  The  Divine  Liturgy.    Look  for  specific  details  in  weekly  announcements.        Please  participate  in  Festival  baking  dates  on  Sunday,  October  11,  18,  and  25.    This  year’s  GreekFest  will  be  held  on  November  20.   STEWARDSHIP     Although  stewardship  pledges  continue  to  trickle  in,  there  is  room  for  improvement.    May  the  arrival  of  Father  Panagioti  to  our  parish  and  the  beginning  of  the  ecclesiastical  year  on  September  1  inspire  all  of  us  to  support  the  needs  of  our  parish.     COMMUNITY NEWS Deepest  sympathy  is  extended  to  Kathy  Albano  on  the  loss  of  her  father,  Athanasios  (Arthur)  Englis,  who  died  in  June,  and  to  the  Clevenger  and  Georges  families  on  the  loss  of  their  mother  and  sister,  Constance  (Connie)  Georges  Clevenger,  who  died  in  July.    May  their  memories  be  eternal.    Congratulations  to  Alexandra  Berr  (daughter  of  Dyan  Aretakis  and  Stuart  Berr)  for  recently  winning  a  Harrison  Undergraduate  Research  Award  for  a  project  to  study  genetic  subtypes  of  brain  cancer  cells.    Alex,  a  fourth-­‐year  UVA  student  majoring  in  biomedical  engineering,  plans  to  continue  her  research,  earn  a  Ph.D.,  and  go  into  academia.    

Congratulations  also  go  to  James  Thomas  George  Boudouris,    Konstantina  Damvakaris,  and  Yanni  Raymond  on  their  recent  achievements.        James  Boudouris  (son  of  George  and  Charity)  graduated  from  Western  Albemarle  High  School  on  May  29,  and  is  continuing  his  education  at  the  University  of  Wisconsin-­‐Madison  in  the  College  of  Letters  and  Science  Honors  Program.    Konstantina  Damvakaris  (daughter  of  Zannis  and  Eleni)  graduated  with  honors  from  the  Renaissance  School  on  May  30,  and  is  attending  Rutgers  University  in  New  Brunswick,  NJ.        Yanni  Raymond  (son  of  Mark  and  Claire)  and  Knox  Daniel  competed  at  the  2015  North  American  School  Scrabble  Championship  in  Providence,  RI,  earning  a  stellar  3rd  place  out  of  58  teams.    In  the  game  that  sealed  their  3rd  place  status  (and  generous  cash  prize)  they  played  TUITIONS,  thereby  fittingly  earning  a  nice  deposit  for  their  college  funds.   COMMUNITY THANK  YOU Many  thanks  are  sent  to  Tom  Vangelopoulos  for  baking  and  donating  the  five  loaves  of  bread  that  were  blessed  during  the  August  5  Vesper  Services.    Heart-­‐felt  thanks  are  extended  to  Terry  Vassalos  for  his  generosity  (and  delicious  food!).    Terry  hosted  a  dinner  at  The  Tip  Top  Restaurant  on  August  5  for  our  fifteen  clerical  visitors  who  officiated  later  at  the  Vesper  Services.        A  special  thank  you  goes  to  all  parishioners  who  provided  something  for  the  buffet  table  at  the  reception  following  the  Vespers  and  who  helped  set  up  and/or  clean  up.         BI-MONTHLY BULLETIN AND WEBSITE The  arrival  of  Father  Panagioti  to  our  parish  may  change  the  publication  of  bi-­‐monthly  bulletins  and  church  website  updates.    Stay  tuned  for  future  developments.
