The lake is fed by four rivers contributing water toLake Lanao which consist of Taraka, Gata, Masiu, andBacayawan.

The lake's only outlet is the Agus River, which exitssouthwest into Iligan Bay by the Maria Cristina Fallsand Cinnamon Falls. Lake Lanao serves as a

reservoir for the Agus hydroelectric power plantstapped by the National Power Corporation(NAPOCOR) which generates about 75% of Mindanaospower. Maria Cristina Falls is very beneficial in that ithas a very strong surge of water and powers

the hydroelectric power plant that supplies theelectricity.

On the other hand, a variety of waterfowl now live at Lake Lanaobecause it is well-supplied with wetlands providing excellentbreeding habitats for shorebirds. They include egrets, bitterns, herons, ducks, geese, rails, and Eurasian coots found in largenumbers. Also wild pig and deer inhabit the shoreline as well, whichis also used for livestock grazing. The ecoregion is also home to 41

    endemic freshwater crab species.

Lake Lanao used to be home to 18 endemic fish species, Cyprinids, which is a large family of freshwater fish that include carps,

minnows, and barbs, with 3 endemic species left.

Unfortunately, changes in water levels and the introduction of othernon-native species of fish have reduced the number of endemics aswell.

    HISTORICAL STATE OF

    LAKE LANAO:

Lake Lanao never originally existed as a lakebefore so there's not really much to say how it

historically looked like. However, it was believedto have formed by a collapsed crater of avolcano now surrounded by farming villages andtowns. Lake Lanao fills the crater of the volcano

at an elevation of 2,300 feet above sea level. Ithas been theorized by David G. Frey that thelake developed as a result of "the tectonic-volcanic damming of a basin between twomountain ranges and the collapse of a largevolcano.

The formation of the basin couldhave resulted from depressed fault blocks

caused by the movement of the underlyingmagma." (David G. Frey) According to Frey ofIndiana University in Bloomington, theestablishment of Lake Lanao might have

happened during the late Tertiary Period. TheTertiary Period ended about 10,000,000 yearsago therefore making Lake Lanao about 10million years old.

    HUMAN IMPACTS OF LAKE LANAO:

    * Lake Lanao and along the rivershas suffered from logging timber, extensiveland use, and also from farming in thewater catchment area.

*Logging in the water catchment areais slowly increasing soil erosion, and this iscausing increased siltation and affecting

    water quality in the lake.

  • 8/12/2019 Lanao Lake

    22/28

*Soil erosion also contributes to the declineof the lake due to increasing sewageand agricultural run-off which have addedgreatly to the deterioration of water qualityin the lake.

*Pollution from insecticides and herbicidesfrom hunting, over fishing, and theintroduction of exotic species of fish such asthe white goby and milk fish all contributed

to the extinction of the 18 endemic speciesof cyprinid fish with only the Puntius lindug,P. sirang, and P. tumba species left.
