There has been a great deal of coverage of the Prime Minister's announcements regarding
proposed changes to recurrent funding arrangements for schools.
Sydney Archbishop Anthony Fisher, quoted in The Australian on May 4th, said the Church wanted
“the best for every kid, not playing off one school against another or one family against another.”
“The devil’s in the detail, it’s s ll very unclear what it all means,” he said. “If Catholic schools will
bear the brunt of the redistribu on, this could force school closures, larger class sizes and higher
fee imposts on parents.”
He said he supported needs‐based funding, more spending on educa on and funding indexa on.
“But educa on is not just about SES (socio‐economic status); that’s why the ability of State and
Regional Catholic systems to distribute funds to meet local needs should remain.”
I am concerned that a lot of the commentary has focussed on Capital rather than Recurrent
funding.
The Prime Minister's announcement does not address Capital Funding, the money used to acquire
land and build facili es. Our systemic Catholic schools are not the high fee and over funded
schools with luxurious facili es iden fied in the commentary.
Our schools are built on church land and we are fortunate to have some fine buildings, fit for
purpose and contributed to by the Commonwealth as well as being funded by our parents and the
Catholic community over many years.
This school, like most I have worked in, also have buildings that the parents built or helped to
build, second hand buildings or ones built with used materials. There is great pride in these
schools, the value for money obtained by the way they have been constructed and the care we
take to maintain them.
Our school's main reliance on Commonwealth Recurrent Funding, the funding the Prime Minister
is referring to, is to contribute to our greatest expense, teacher wages. A cut or a freeze or even a
failure to keep pace with increases in cost of living and infla on could have a drama c effect on
the things connected to teacher wages such as teacher numbers, class sizes and school fees.
Recurrent funding should address student need and our school needs surety
around this funding and a fair share going forward.
I believe the proposed funding model cannot be endorsed at this stage because
of the lack of detailed informa on provided to the Catholic sector.

NAPLAN
Students in Year 7 and 9 will sit for the Na onal Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) next week, commencing
Tuesday 9th May. All Year 7 and 9 students are expected to par cipate in the 4 aspects of the test – Reading, Wri ng, Language
Conven ons (Spelling, Grammar and Punctua on) and Numeracy.
It is important to remember that, whilst this test provides excellent diagnos c analysis for students, parents and staff, it is only 1
form of assessment that reflects the academic journey.
Teachers have been familiarizing the students with the NAPLAN test formats and providing appropriate support and guidance.
Please ensure your child that these tests are just one part of the educa onal program. Urge them to do the best they can. I remind
you of the importance of plenty of sleep and a good breakfast each day. I wish the students all the best.
AUSTRALIAN CATHOLIC YOUTH FESTIVAL
This fes val will be held in Sydney from the 5th to 7th December this year. For our Year 11 students, the fes val will be their retreat
experience, we have budgeted for all to a end. When the program becomes clearer we hope to book in Years 9 and 10 students
for a day each. It is expected to be like a mini World Youth Day experience and a great opportunity for the Catholic Youth of
Sydney and Australia to gather. Post school youth can contact the school or their parishes for further details or use the QR code

On Wednesday 26th the College gathered as a community to commemorate the brave servicemen and women who fought to protect

It was a very moving ceremony, which provided me where we could reflect on the true spirit of ANZAC – that of courage, mateship
and sacrifice and how that spirit bears meaning and relevance for our society today.
A er the service, the wreath was taken
down to the Bankstown War Memorial
where the wreath was placed at the
Cenotaph.

STAFF SPIRITUALITY DAY “…then their eyes were opened and they recognised him…”
The College values ongoing professional learning for staff members as well as the students ‐
professional learning and growth is a life‐long experience. On Monday 24th April the students
gained an extra day of rest whilst the staff of LaSalle gathered for their annual Spirituality Day.
At this par cular me of the year, just a er celebra ng the joys of Easter, we decided to con nue
the Chris an story and reflect on and engage with the scriptural Emmaus story. An Emmaus
experience involves seeing things with new eyes. It was a me of deep reflec on and a chance to
experience our own Emmaus awakening, as did the 2 apostles who encountered the risen Lord on
the road to Emmaus in Luke’s Gospel. I thank Ms White in par cular for the prepara on of the
wonderful opportunity.

ABC’s Q and A
A number of students from Year 11 were given the opportunity to a end the ABC's Ul mo studio to be a part of the audience of
their Q&A television program. The experience was phenomenal, and we were involved in the discussion of Q&A's live episode with
Barnaby Joyce, Tanya Plibersek, Armando Iannucci, Brian Schmidt and Laura Demasi.
We were able to send in ques ons that we found would make for an interes ng discussion, and did so. I got a call from the
Producer,Tara Thomas of ABC, and was told that they had
decided to use one of my ques ons from the ones they had
received (choosing 12 ques ons from 250+), and had
congratulated me! In the live audience, we were able to listen
in on some very interes ng ques ons based on a number of
contemporary Australian issues.
Overall, the experience of being able to be a part of the live
audience of Q&A at the ABC studio was a truly unforge able
experience (partly because of the chance to be on TV,
admi edly).

Advice for Parents: RESOLVING CONFLICT AROUND HOMEWORK
Some of the most common arguments at home (related to schoolwork) lead to statements like this:
“Stop playing computer games and do your homework.”
“I told you, get off your phone, I can see you are on Facebook.”
“Why haven’t you started your homework yet?”
“What do you mean you have no schoolwork to do?”
If these are common arguments in your household there are some simple steps that can be taken to deal with this.
Step 1: Family mee ng. Both students and parents get a chance to explain what is bugging them.
Step 2: Agree on how much me will be allocated to schoolwork per day or per week.
Step 3: Agree that during this me homework will be the first priority, then assessments and any remaining me should be spent on independent learning (e.g. reviewing difficult work, making summaries).
Step 4: Allocate set mes for schoolwork and write these out and put them on the fridge e.g. Monday 4‐5pm, 6‐6.30pm.
Step 5: Agree that in these blocks of me, there will be no personal technology use (preferably phones switched off and put out of sight).
Step 6: Decide on rewards and consequences (if the agreement is not honoured).
