Etegami – Picture Letter ClassAre you interested in drawing and watercolour painting but have never tried it before? Etegami (Picture Letter) is a perfect thing to try for someone like you! Previous art experience is not required. Etegami is a communication tool to send your feelings to someone for whom you care about. Why not make an original postcard? Family participation welcome! Culture and Fun at March Break Kamp KodomoDon’t miss out on the all the March Break fun at the JCCC!!! Kamp Kodomo is returning for another week filled with cultural activities.Our March Break camp features many of the favourites of the summer, including a try at martial arts and traditional cultural arts. The camp operates from 9:00am to 4:30pm from Monday March 10 to Friday March 14, 2014. Fees for this program are $200 per child for a 5-day session. A 10 % discount will be applied for JCCC members and the 2nd (or more) child from the same family will receive a 5% discount. Extended camp care is available from 8:00am to 9:00am and from 4:30pm to 6:00pm with an additional cost of $35. Camp fees cover all materials, two nutritional snacks per day, and a special activity. Campers are required to bring a lunch and drink. So call us today, as the registration deadline is March 1, 2012. Kamp Kodomo’s maximum enrollment is 20 children. Student volunteers needed!Have you been keeping up with your volunteering hours? Do you have enough to fulfill your high school requirements? Do you want the opportunity to increase these hours? If you are motivated, looking for leadership opportunities, and enjoy working with children, this may be for you! We are looking for up to four energetic student volunteers (minimum 14 yrs old) to assist the program leader with Kamp Kodomo. The Kamp runs from 9:00am to 4:30pm from Monday March 10 to Friday March 14. Spring Festival Haru Matsuri 2014We have had ice and snow and power outages so far this winter, but Torontonians have managed it all. While there may still be more winter to get through, there will be no better way to head into spring than to

head to the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre (JCCC) on March 1 and 2, 2014! The JCCC will be opening their doors to everyone as they celebrate a weekend filled with activities, entertainment and exhibits at Haru Matsuri 2014!! This year’s theme is Flowers. Each year all across Japan, the blooming of the cherry trees is celebrated by thousands of Japanese and visitors alike. The blooming starts as early as January in the south and continues on as you move north through the country, with blooming in the Tokyo area around the end of March. Many people will gather under the trees for a picnic with their families and friends to experience the beauty of this time of year. While the trees in Toronto won’t bloom until later in the season, we still associate the blooming of all flowers as the true beginning of the Spring season. Haru Matsuri will also include Japanese arts and crafts demonstrations such as Ikebana (flower arranging), Bunka Shishu (embroidery), Origami (paperfolding) and Sumi-e (brush painting). The JCCC offers classes in all of these areas and you can sign up for our Spring programmes during your visit to Haru Matsuri. The JCCC's martial artists will demonstrate the techniques of "The Way of the Warrior" through Aikido, Karate, Iaido, Naginata, Kyudo and Kendo. For entertainment, there will be odori (traditional Japanese dancing) by JCCC traditional dance groups Ayame-Kai, Himawari Buyo Kai and Sakura-Kai, Koto and Shamisen by the York University Japanese Music Ensemble and Taiko (Japanese drumming). Delicious Japanese cuisine will be available in the food court. As always, the JCCC entrance will feature an elaborate display of Hina Matsuri Dolls. For a small fee visitors can have the opportunity to dress in traditional costume then head on over to the display to take their own photos.Gather your family and friends and come to the JCCC, and join us as we celebrate the arrival of Spring!

February Movie: Space Battleship Yamato Space Battleship Yamato is director Takashi (Sunset on 3rd Street) Yamazaki’s hit 2010 live-action adaptation of the popular anime series. The story is set in the year 2199. The Gamilas, a mysterious alien enemy, has been decimating the Earth to unlivable and irradiated conditions for the past 5 years. Humankind now lives underground to escape the radiation, but with only a year until extinction. One day while roaming the surface of Earth, former pilot Susumu Kodai (Takuya Kimura) comes across a capsule sent from the planet Iskandar that reveals the existence of technology that has the power to eradicate the radiation from Earth. The chosen crew of Space Battleship Yamato takes off on the long trip to Iskandar with hopes to save the Earth. The Anime News Network calls the film "a thoroughly modernized adaptation, one that hits the gas pedal right out of the gate and doesn't stop for a moment, unashamed to just try and entertain the hell out of you.” Featuring spectacular special effects, thrilling action and a great cast including Takuya Kimura, Meisa Kuroki, Toshiro Yanagiba, Reiko Takashima. Introduction to Flamenco ClassThis introductory class is designed for people who do not have previous dance experience or who have little dance experience. In this introductory class, we primarily focus on the joy of dancing, listening to music, and moving our body. Japan is the second largest flamenco community in the world next to Spain and has more flamenco schools than Spain. Flamenco attracts a lot of Japanese people not only through its beautiful music but also through its passionate dance form. This introductory class will give each student a chance to learn the basic steps of tangos as well as fundamental dance techniques. We will try to build and strengthen our inner/core muscles and build stamina as well! Let's have fun together! 10 classes. JCCC membership required.

Start Date: Thursday March 20, 2014 Time: 7:00pm - 8:15pm Level: IntroductoryFee: $50 plus HSTAttire:Exercise outfits (such as yoga pants and T-shirts so that it is easy to move) with comfortable shoes such as running shoes (No need to buy flamenco shoes for this introductory class.)

Instructor: Rie Ishizuka has been dancing flamenco since 2003. She studied under Myriam Allard and Katherine Oliveri in Montreal, and has travelled numerous times to Spain. She further advanced her skills under the instructions of Manuel Betanzos, Javier Latorre, Concha Jareño, and La Lupi, among others. She has danced at flamenco festivals in Canada and Spain, and regularly dances at restaurants in Toronto. She enjoys collaborating with artists from different genres.

Chado – Japanese tea ceremony class Students will learn the basic procedures for making tea as well as how to integrate the spirit of tea into their study and daily lives. Classes will be taught by members of the Urasenke Tankokai Toronto Chapter. 8 classes. JCCC membership required.

Introduction to Bonsai ClassBonsai is the art of growing trees, or woody plants shaped as trees, in containers. Originating in China over 1000 years ago and introduced to Japan during the Kamakura period (1185 - 1333), bonsai has been refined into one of Japan’s most preeminent art forms. Since the end of WWII, bonsai has spread to all corners of the earth and is now enjoyed by millions of enthusiasts. A unique blend of aesthetics and horticulture, bonsai is a living art rewarding the patient and devoted artist with years of pleasure from season to season. In this course, students will learn the history, theory and practice of bonsai through informative lectures, multimedia presentations, demonstrations and hands on training. Topics will include the artistic principles of styling bonsai, sourcing and selecting raw material, pruning, wiring, watering and transplanting. At the end of the course, the students will have their very own beginner’s bonsai to enjoy and the knowledge to care for it.This bonsai program starts in March and ends in the Fall. Because the skills learned are cumulative, new students are only accepted at the beginning of the course. Students are encouraged to attend all sessions to the best of their ability, as missing sessions will make it difficult to catch up with the rest of the class (especially during the period from April to May) . Intended for students who are serious about doing bonsai as there is a monetary investment required in materials which cannot be refunded. Bonsai are living beings and as such, require an ongoing, regular time commitment to be suc-cessful.

Instructor: Mike Roussel – Has been growing bonsai for over 20 years. He studied Fine Art at the University of Guelph and was president of the Toronto Bonsai Society from 2009 – 2011. He is a regular speaker at the Toronto club as well as other bonsai and horticultural clubs throughout the GTA.

In Meiji Era Hokkaido a formerly lethal swordsman of the shogunate, who has since renounced killing, is driven by poverty to once again take up the sword as a bounty hunter. Ochawan Transformation Exhibition at the JCCC Gallery in February 2014by John Ota

A most utilitarian vessel, ochawan is a bowl used daily for drinking tea and eating rice throughout Japan and the rest of Asia. The JCCC Gallery has distributed over 70 ochawan to artists to make their own personal statements. Come see how the modest rice bowl can be transformed by creative minds

to provoke, prod, make us laugh and make us cry. Opening on Sunday February 2, 2014, the exhibition continues to February 28, 2014. The exhibit is an artistic idea from Akira Yoshikawa and the NAJC in celebration of the Redress.

Taiko Workshopslead by Yakudo Traditional Japanese Drummers

Taiko drumming workshops for beginners and youth. Come out and catch the taiko spirit! Workshops will be offered for beginners who want to try taiko for the first time as well as returning taiko enthusiasts who wish to further develop their skills. Youth workshops are being offered for children and youth between the ages of 5-15.

Sedai wins Governor General’s History Finalist Awardby Lorene Nagata

In 2013, the Sedai Proj-ect was nominated for the prestigious Governor General’s History Award for Excellence in Commu-nity Programming. Although it was not selected as the 2013 recipient of the award, it was named as one of two projects from English Can-ada to be presented with a Finalist Award. Project Chair, Lorene Nagata, and past-Chair and founder of the project, Connie Sugiyama, attended at Rideau Hall to participate in the presentations which were hosted by His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston. The Governor General’s History Awards are Canada’s top honours in the field of history and heritage. They celebrate the very best in Canadian achievements to ensure our national past has a vibrant presence in our society today. The Awards programme was started in 1996 by Canada’s National History Society to recognize excellence in teaching Canadian History. Since then, the Society has expanded the awards programme to recognize the varied ways history can be taught. This Award was a result of the work that the Sedai team, including Elizabeth Fujita and Lisa Uyeda, has undertaken over the recent years to preserve the history of the Japanese Canadians. With almost 200 life interviews and 180 short stories collected from the two conferences (run in 2010 and 2013), the Sedai Project continues to work towards its goal of preserving our history for the education of future generations.

Help Acknowledge a Right During a Time of So Many Wrongs

As the first Sedai Corner of 2014, the whole Sedai Project team wishes you a Happy New Year – Here’s to another year packed with discoveries, memories, and meaning. Sedai would like to thank our most recent Sedai interviewee and contributor, Joanne Sugiyama. The stories and memories of each individual are invaluable and irreplaceable as unique pieces of the community mosaic. Many thanks for your time and consideration during the holiday season, Joanne! This year, as part of the JCCC’s annual Sakura Gala, the JCCC would like to highlight and honour the contributions of the Jewish Canadian community, who showed great humanity and greatness of spirit to many Japanese Canadians resettling east of the Rockies following WWII. For those who endured the hardships of forced relocation, internment, Ghost towns, and POW camps, building a new life in a new part of Canada with the few possessions they still owned was an incredibly daunting and frightening proposition. Many Japanese Canadians who found themselves in these dire circumstances were turned away from housing and employment, for reasons often based on lingering racism and discrimination. However, many Canadian Nikkei were given the chance to start their lives afresh with the assistance of Jewish Canadian business and property owners, who offered employment and shelter above the common prejudices of the day. This aspect of the narrative common to many Japanese Canadians who experienced postwar Canada has gone largely unacknowledged on a community scale - many Canadians in and outside of the Jewish Canadian population have little knowledge of this time period nor this historical gem of Canadian multicultural acceptance. Here is where you can play a part! Did you, or someone you know, find assistance (eg. employment or housing) through members of the Jewish-Canadian community, following the war? Or do you recall any business names or names of individuals, who you believe should be recognized for their support of Japanese Canadians during the postwar period of discriminatory injustice? If so, Sedai would love to hear from you! Nagata Shachu in collaboration with Alcvin Ryuzen Ramosby Nagata Shachu

Toronto’s premiere Japa-nese taiko drumming group, Nagata Shachu, proudly presents as part of its 2013/2014 season, a collaborative concert with shakuhachi master Alcvin Ryuzen Ramos on Saturday, March 15, 2014. Ramos is one of the leading performers of the shakuhachi (Japanese

end-blown bamboo flute) in the world today. He received his Dai Shihan (master license) in 2008 making him the first Canadian and one of only a handful of non-Japanese to receive this esteemed honour. He will collaborate with Nagata Shachu and its founder, Kiyoshi Nagata, in an exciting evening of new works, traditional Japanese folk songs and exhilarating drumming. This is a show not to be missed! The performance takes place at the Brigantine Room, Harbourfront Centre (235 Queen’s Quay West). DUO X[iksa] Toronto PerformanceOn its first visit to Canada, well known Japanese DUO X[iksa], Yasutaka Hemmi and Takayo Matsumura, with guest artist Canadian/Italian pianist Erika Crinó, will perform music by Hemmi, Hosokawa, Takemitsu, Tokunaga, Messiaen and Pepa at 8:00 pm on Wednesday March 19, 2014 at the HELI-CONIAN HALL, 35 Hazelton Avenue, Toronto. The same pro-gram will be played in Montreal on Monday, March 17, 2014. Yasutaka Hemmi is one of the most dynamic and active violinists in Japan. The fascinating life of Ichimaru (1906-1997), one of the most famous geishas of the 20th century, is told through this collection of her magnificent kimonos and other personal effects. In the 1930s, Ichimaru left geishahood to pursue an illustrious career as a recording artist, but even as a diva, she continued to perform in full geisha regalia. Combining her experience as a geisha with an extraordinary talent as a vocalist and musician, she would become a unique figure in the social history of modern Japan.

Ichimaru's exquisitely hand-crafted kimonos reveal her style and taste over several decades, offering an intimate

glimpse into the life and times of an icon of Japanese popular culture. From Geisha to Diva combines garments and fashion with documentary materials and ephemera offering a unique perspective on the processes of globalization and dynamism of traditions over the last century. New Year’s Eve Dinner and Dance 2013The JCCC New Year’s Eve Dinner and Dance for 2013 was a great success. While the committee has worked tirelessly year after year to ensure a fantastic night, they have decided to retire following this event. It was a very bittersweet night as they saw more than 200 attendees join them to ring in the New Year for one final time. On the day before a crew of volunteers gathered to inflate the balloons which were then corralled into a net to be raised to the ceiling. They were “helped” by the children of Ikebata Nursery who were dazzled by the hundreds of colourful balloons. By the late afternoon almost everything was ready for the next night. As people arrived, they entered the hall to sounds of music by DJ Ralph Yuen. It was so enticing that some couples started dancing immediately. But they had to pause in order to experience the Prime Rib buffet dinner catered by Calvert’s. The meal was accompanied by the incredibly talented singer, Brenda Naccarato. Immediately following dinner the dancers returned to the floor. We were also graced with some breathtaking dance performances by Abigail Xinkas and Artemiy Kokhanov, 2012 and 2013 Junior Canadian Standard Champions. There were also opportunities for spot and novelty dances for prizes throughout the night. At midnight, the hundreds of balloons cascaded down on the revellers to greet the New Year. Champagne and sushi was served. It was a fantastic celebration! The whole event would not have been possible without the support and sponsorship of Spring Villa, Hong Kong Imports, Sakura Imports, Jo-Cy and Edward Lee, Midori Fujiwara, and committee members. The JCCC would like to thank all the committee members and volunteers who have worked on the New Year’s Eve Dinner and Dances in the past. We especially want to thank this year’s committee and volunteers, Kay Fujiwara, George Tsushima, Peter and Paul Wakayama, Jo-Cy and Edward Lee, Theresa Sano, Sid & Marie Ikeda, Yuki Nakamura, Mr. And Mrs. Yoshimoto, Kei Yoshimoto and the JCCC staff.

The JCCC’s Annual Shinnen Kai is the right way to start off a New Year! Kobayashi Hall was again the place to be for the annual Shin-nen Kai New Year’s Day Banquet. Each year sees a wide variety of attendees from a couple of friends to large family groupings like the Mori’s, who had more than 30 people in attendance. Together, everyone helped to celebrate the start of the New Year with an incredible evening of fine dining and entertainment. Chef Kunio Ishii of Toriichi Catering outdid himself again in preparing the star of the show. The buffet was an incredible array of traditional o-sechi ryori (new year’s dishes) including nishime, zoni, sashimi, sushi and so much more. Rounding out the evening, we were treated to vocal performances by Sachiko Pereklita, Kenji Yamamura and Eiko Mernagh. Dancers from Himawari Buyo Kai also graced us with two beautiful performances. In addition to door prizes, there is a Share the Wealth draw that saw a few lucky winners share in more than $500 of prize money. What a wonderful way to start to the year off! The JCCC is grateful for the support and participation of Rick Tazumi, Marty Kobayashi, and Constantin, as well as the other volunteers and staff who worked together to make this event happen. A very special thank you to Mr. Kunio Ishii and his family for celebrating this holiday with us each year.

Winter Family Festival 2013 Another Great Success!by Winter Family Festival Committee

With hopes of providing a fun-filled afternoon for families, the JCCC held its 3rd

Annual Winter Family Festival on Sunday December 8, 2013. The day was full of activities and entertainment not only for children, but also for parents to enjoy, and brought together people from various backgrounds to celebrate the holiday season. Just like last year, we had over 600 visitors and children enjoyed making Christmas tree ornaments, buttons and Etegami greeting cards, decorated gingerbread cookies, and even had the chance to ride in the OPP mini motorized car! The holiday-themed game area was expanded this year to include all the popular games, such as ring toss, candy cane fishing and musical chairs with cool prizes for every player. Inside the Kobayashi Hall, everyone enjoyed the beautiful sound by the Bells of St. Matthew’s hand bell choir, and kids were thrilled by the amazing tricks of Jeffrey Snape, the Magician! The story-telling held at the newly opened JCCC Library was a perfect place to take a little break from all the excitement especially for parents with younger children. Along with the kids’ all-time favourites, such as popcorn and pizza, we partnered up with three popular Japanese restaurants: Ryoji; Gushi; and Mon K for a wider variety of food options. The highlight of the day was, once again, Santa who made a special appearance and brought toys for the girls and boys who waited in line to take a picture with him. The day concluded with Santa’s candy cane toss and the Reindeer Raffle with chances to win lots of fantastic prizes which were generously donated by our sponsors. The Winter Family Festival Committee would like to take this opportunity to extend our gratitude to everyone who came out to the festival and our incredible sponsors for their continued support and generosity. But most importantly, we would like to give a huge thank you to our hardworking volunteers who were the reason for the remarkable success! Seeing smiles everywhere and with so much positive feedback from the community, we are confident that this will continue to be our tradition for many years to come. Kamp Kodomo March Break 2014

Our Mission

To provide a stimulating and educational Japanese/Japanese Canadian cultural experience for young children.

Who can register?

Children ages 6 (as of December 31, 2013) to 12 Years

Dates March 10 – 14, 2014

Times

Camp Hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Extended camp care is available daily from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. and from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m.

Fee

$ 180.00 if you register by January 24, 2014 $200.00 if you register after January 24, 2014

Why register?

Kamp Kodomo is run by a head instructor as well as many dedicated volunteers. This team knows that exposure to culture is the best way to ignite interest and to hand over tradition to the next generation. Together, they work to ensure that the children have a wonderful time in a safe

environment.

There is also one special activity day that may include an offsite trip.

Refund Policy: Refunds, less a $25.00 administrative charge per registrant, will be issued for all program session cancellation received in writing.
