Kuressaare Town Hall – This simple, almost dour, but also somehow grand building, representing the Northern European baroque, was constructed be-tween 1654 and 1670 under the aegis of Swedish Count Magnus Gabriel de la Gardie. The ceiling of the main hall features the largest mural painting on canvas that has ever been found in Estonia (5.5 m x 7.5 m). C3Ph +372 455 0550

Saare County Central Library – The second floor of this building has an Internet café with ten computers for public use. Two of these computers are designed to be used for short periods (max. 15 minutes) without needing to be reserved. There is an American informa-tion point in the reading room. Kuressaare Theatre – This theatre was once the home of a local aristocrat. Despite frequent renova-tions, the building has retained its Classicistic appear-ance. The Aavik’s Museum – This museum was once home to one of Estonia’s best known linguist Johan-nes Aavik (1880-1973) and his musician nephew Joosep Aavik (1899-1989). B2Ph +372 455 7583 www.saaremaamuuseum.ee.

The Great Bridge – Estonia’s biggest, longest and oldest stone bridge, dating back to the 18th century, is protected as an architectural monument. Restoration work on the bridge began in 1990. B2

Kudjape cemetery – This final resting place is situ-ated 3 km from the centre of Kuressaare. Founded in 1780, the cemetery with its Classicistic chapels, unu-sual gravestones and ancient trees is protected as an architectural monument. A1

Health park – This park stretches out over 36 hectares of forest land. Its health tracks – one meas-uring two kilometres and the other a little over half a kilometre – are free for the use of the public. D3

Grove of Heads of States – This grove can be found in the newest part of the park, where the tradition of recognising foreign heads of states was instigated in 2002.The first oak trees were planted here by the former Latvian President V.V-F and then the President of Estonia, A.R. on 5 August 2002. Also the Lithuanian President V.A. and the Polish President A.K., the Queen of Holland Beatrix and the current President of Estonia T.H.I. have planted their trees here. C2

Memorial on the foundation of the town park (1861) – There is a memorial marking the site of the former cemetery in the place of which the park was planted. Under the memorial made of old head-stones and limestone, the bones that were un-earthed during the planting were buried. C2

Resort Club – This building was completed in 1889. Its architecture showcases columns, wooden structures and diagonal supports. Opposite the building is a bandstand. C2

Suur Tõll and Piret – Sculptor Tauno Kangro’s 2002 interpretation of Saaremaa’s epic heroes. C2

Monument to victims of fascism 1941-1945 – This monument is located on the south-western ravelin of the fortifications of the Episcopal castle. The monument features the text „Elavad, pidage meeles” which translates as ‘They live on: remem-ber them’. C2

Memorial to the 1941 victims of Soviet occupy-ing forces – This memorial is situated in the castle courtyard on the reconstructed slopes of its em-bankment. C2

Kuressaare beach and waterfront promenade – This beautiful sandy beach and promenade, op-posite the yacht harbour, are a perfect place to stroll and enjoy the sea views. They are also ideal for summer picnics. C2-D2

Kuressaare’s Episcopal castle – This castle, the construction of which was completed in the second half of the 14th century, is the best preserved me-dieval castle anywhere in the entire Baltic region. The castle hosts extensive exhibitions on the his-tory and natural environment of Saaremaa, and is also a venue for art exhibitions and summer music concerts. Town park – This park was developed on the site of the former cemetery on the initiative of Kures-saare mayor Hugo van Borg in the 1860s. Covering 17.6 hectares, it contains dozens of rare species of trees. C2

Field Watch Building – This building dates from the end of the 18th century. The town ended here: the guard after whom the building is named was charged with the task of ensuring that the town’s animals did not wander onto the manor’s fields. C2

St. Nicholas’ Apostolic Orthodox Church – This eye-catching early Classicistic building was com-pleted in the late 18th century and is the oldest building of its kind on Saaremaa. C2 Ph +372 453 3743

Monument to the islanders who fell in the War of Independence from 1918-1920 – Lossi Street is home to a copy of a bronze sculpture created by Amandus Adamson, one of Estonia’s best known sculptors, and unveiled in 1928. The original monument was de-stroyed by Stalinist military forces. C2

Scales House – Opposite the Town Hall, on the edge of the central square, is a baroque scales house, the construction of which was completed in 1663. It is the only building of its kind still standing in Estonia. The weigh house had precise, approved scales which were used in trading goods. The building now houses a pub. St. Lawrence Church – This single-nave church, constructed in late Classicistic style in 1836, retains its original interior. Its new gold-painted stained glass windows were created by Urmo Raus. C3Ph +372 45 36 560 www.eelk.ee/kuressaare

Former fire brigade depot – This building was con-structed around 1870 and was later given a wooden bell tower. The current look of the depot is a result of comprehensive reconstruction work in 1911.
