Expressing Ownership-Phrase “У меня есть”

You are already familiar with the phrase “У меня есть...”-”I have…” meaning possession.Example: У меня есть машина- I have a car.Let’s now see how this phrase changes with different subjects in the sentence.

Expressing Lack of Ownership or Nonexistence.

1. Russians express a lack of ownership using a structure “У + Genitive case + нет+ Genitive case”Never use “не есть” instead of “нет”Examples: У него нет собаки (He does not have a dog)

2. To express nonexistence Russians use нет+ Genitive case.Examples: Здесь нет автобуса (There is no bus here)

Здесь нет банка (There is no bank here)

3. To give a short negative answer about ownership it is enough to say “нет”.Examples- У них есть родственники? - Нет
