This is an itinerary of self-examination and query about everything, re-investi-gating all the value that people accept as evident truth, why? They are happy in it; theycall that is normal, why? They accepted to be in a prison.

Global Architecture is nearly crazy in a large scale, someone are still self-con-trolled, but internal architecture is seem to be compromised, concessive a withdraw withso many argument, why? Liberty

If this life is really free, we will never talk about liberty. But everything is stillin prisons and lunacy. It is truth!

We are familiar with binding ourselves and accept to do that. We still wantliberty, is it exist? We just only have demands and are satisfied with them; it is fairlyliberty, liberty in framework, liberty with binding. And inside this binding, we create newthings, so is that creativity real?

We are living in liberty at so many levels, once more time, is liberty havelevels? Biding or accepted to bound, there will no real liberty. And then, we ourselves will

misunderstand that accept with more binding till sometime there will have liberty. Willthat time come?

Dont know when it started or where is the beginning, this power and thispressure themselves become a procedure of self-examination, survey, to see the liberty. Ar-chitecture is just only a type of act in normal life. I and it meet each other unexpectedlywithout choosing, pondering at the beginning. I just only remember there is some suggestsfrom people around me that they tried to explain me how to define what architecture is.They only think that people who make architecture is the one who creates some stuffs,nothing else. And I have gone.

We are deeply enjoying the material with its assurance,it seems to satisfy for everything, not only from outside but also from inside needs, andit offers joy, pleasure at any time.

The architectural cubic is always trying to create new things, it must bedifferent, being different distinguishes others previously confirmed. And it must be alsonew, the shape should be changed but still in the old style... we are contented withthis action.

Or we have a solid foundation which is same to someone, very huge and isrecognized. We are immersed in such a way of producing, so joyful, supporting eachother and praising each other. It was born, was examined like a series of experimentssimilar to the way of manufacturing.

Architecture The powerThere are few people who can read the language of architecture? They apply

only few methods, by this or that way, they select from the outside, and then add themtogether to meet the requirements. Whatever I want, I will be satisfied immediately, or Ilike to enjoy and yes, I am fulfilled. We only get it through an agent, as if there was aclarification, agreed and praised by the majority. Whoever can read or cannot read thelanguage of architecture, are also the subjects of the impact, as the impact of materialthrough the sensory system.

It always satisfies you, serves you with anything, but it always controls you,the architecture with cultural consumption.

The real strength of space, according to me, is a division. Dark rooms in theprison clearly show us this power. Space represents the power of architecture. But it isexploited, in the way of power.

When we see all the impacts, we recognize the power of space to people, andthen we will understand what the architecture is. But it is so disastrous to be abused,the power affects from city to city, to houses, also. Are you treating architecture likethat way? Have you wondered how you are dealing with it? Or there is no wonder

because it is just normal, normal to be dull for the reasons of earning your life, forglory, or for power?

Is it true that you always like to chock everythingin your house just like you want to do so inside of you? Why? Is that all about thehabit or the fear to face with having nothing, the emptiness? When you see the poweritself dominates you, youll know what you need? The architecture, with such purpose,it is only trying to remove, trying to minimize. A hard architecture restrains to form,to train people.

And it is important to be distinguishable as well as theydestroy other things, but only within the term polishing the function.

We were made, were trained from the system, were equipped with technology,and now we are strengthening that system to produce others. The function is always regu-lated by the lifestyle, the knowledge and then when it becomes a condition, an evidence, forus, there will be an opposite effect. Gradually, well feel it normal, very normal. Certainly,in consequence, the architecture serves the system.

The main mission of architecture is not for serving that system.

ArtsArt is what was born. It was not born from a knowledge system or function

system; it was born when we pay attention to the dominance.

What is art? Art is a bud, a bud of knowledge about the environment. What isenvironment? It was not just only about the natural environment but also the environmentwhich includes people and surrounding things. The mission for men is to act for art, and

art should really not build the symbol.Art is not produced from any act of making ones living, not about using

This design is a process of a try-out, as a test for the investor and for the

designer. When the project started in the year of 2000, I was working individually and hadnot owned an office. Then, I was only a freshman but had already earned a strong willingand self-confidence for the original building design of 14 floors high. Mr. Nguyen Van Tam,the investors representative also had much confidence in the project. I did not worry aboutanything as well as was not fully aware of the responsibilities of the designer on how theconstruction would turn out.

To me then, Ando was the most obsessive person - an influence! In fact, I couldnot realize all the things I was doing, everything is so limited; however, by my self-confidence

and not being fearful, I concluded this design as the best. Unfortunately, the investor wantedme to test the design on a different model, but I did not accept. Finally, they decided toorganize a design competition, I was also invited to be one of the competitor. I kept all myfirst proposal without any change and any compromise; I ended up being rejected. The chosendesign was the one being built on the model of New World Hotel, this architect is reallygood at indulging. New item was introduced so they spent several months to examine, yetthey were not satisfied. At that time, I almost forgot about this project.

Suddenly, I was offered with an unofficial invitation to continue the try-out. Therequirements and contents of the hotels scale were completely different that the height was

raised up to 25 floors and had to form a right-angle corner with the sea in order not tolock the wind to the city. From that night, the magic dance had begun, I called it thebeach dance in which young couples are gently glide on the sand, a firm mass occupyingmost of the land, on which a hard block head straight adjacently to a soft one. Most of the shareholdersknew so little about architecture; all they cared for were the economic aspect and foreignimport. The bigger the project was, the less perception they had on it. It was such my luck.However, when I conducted a small sample room of 40m2, then all participants made theircomments. Their vision seemed to be limited in only 40m 2.

After the Oriental Hotel project, Mr Nguyen Van Lam and I continue this new

project. The problem is Da Lat city cannot have buildings that are too high. And we aremaking this decision but everything was planned by the government. We are not allowedto build any building that is higher than 55 meter. Da Lat, surrounding by hill, mountain,and natural pine wood, cannot possessed a sense of horizontal surface like delta. We cannotrealize whether this mountain is higher than that mountain or not. We can only realizethat we are on the mid air, but we cannot realize at what height we are at relate to thesea surface. With a one floor house, we can look at it at the general angel or at raisingneck angle. So, what does the sky crapper look like? How is the height determined? Canwe relate it to some mountain or hill? We dont have any horizontal ground to comparewith the building. The building is on the top of the hill. The hill is not covered by plantbut with many vary houses. At the looking angle, you realize that this hill look like a hugebuilding, a combination of multiple small house.

Blocks of houses have to be deleted. I want they continue smoothly, with spireshape going up, continue with ellipse shape revolving around and going upward, as if theyare continuous small building, at the revolving angle will be gardens. There will not betypical skyscrapers which old definition. In my opinion, skyscrapers is just normal buildingsoverlapping each other.

The sensitivity of the high building project, with all of its questions and doubts:

will it be suitable? The beauty of this building convinces everybody at the first sign. Theinvestors, as well as the governments already approved. The economy calculation is already

The project, going through up and down, following the experience, we have toabandon it or stop doing it at any instant under the pressure of other parties. In the end,Mr Tam and I finished designing the project, the project which cannot be better givingits situation.

The 2008 economic crisis prevented the project from being carried out.

Main functions inside the works:

This is a complex construction with inside functions: Being a big pedestal ofthe project includes the hotels services: Buffet Restaurant, Coffee Lounge, multifunction

meeting hall. Swimming pool, bar, and spa area are located on the pedestal surface,bringing a broad view to Nha Trang Bay.

Sleeping block (rooms), lying above (starting from the 7th floor of theproject), includes 165 rooms classified by 5 ranks according to the level of facilities.

On the root (balcony) of the building, there is an outdoor restaurant withgarden and magnificent coastal view.

context?

The project is located on the interaction of Hung Vuong street and Biet ThuStreet, the area features in several living street activities, sidewalks of pedestrians,which both create a lively and animated environment. Underneath the building, wherethe reception, coffee lounge, and business kiosks are generated widely open. This is soaccessible that the activities moving very smoothly of those people are not interrupted.

Then the construction is not a husky bulkhead but a fluent transition; flexibilityfrom the outside causes a friendly mood and such emotion to people to be led in forusing the services: buffet restaurant and multifunction halls.

From sleeping block (rooms) surpassing on neighboured lower floors, touristscan perceive a broad view to the coastline. Outdoor look is presented by differentview angles; the purpose is to create the diversity for the space inside. It then willdemonstrate synchronization in construction. Designing the surfaces image not onlybrings the inspiration to the building but also is a way to deal with its position inthe overall. The length of high-storey block is subjected to East West direction, so

as the long side would enjoy the best architectural direction, which is the North andSouth. However, from the inside, there should be also views heading to Eastern Sea.Therefore, the synchronization of oblique angle cuts wi ll create shady shadows whichreduce the radiation from eastward sun. Other remaining surfaces will be thick wallsto against the radiation of the West.

What constraints (in terms of site, budget,etc.) were imposed on the project? How did youover come those constraints? What design fea-tures highlight those efforts?

to the outdoor life that will not be a single style or synchronization. And when be-ing reflected by the sunlight, they will glisten as diamonds, which almost attractsthe tourists.

The attractiveness of a building is reflected through an open structure. Howcan we generate high open? Ranging from the open space can generate attractive-ness for pedestrians, and bring a new starting signal conveniently for business. Thisis almost a proof of challenge in designing task rather than a cause of difficulties.The villas border carries an image of sidewalks activities associated with featured

pedestrians, which is an open lively portrait of life, being popular for marine tourism.I imagine that the reach must be more natural. The building will not be limited asa husky bulkhead that the city air is interrupted, bringing a sense of strangeness.That is why I created a connection between inside and outside, between the upperservice floors (Buffet restaurant, multifunction hall, swimming pool...) and the flatstreet below, then it will bring a friendly presentiment to human.

What materials are used to construct theproject? What was the motivation behind yourchoice?

Most of my designs are using concrete, construction materials (such as bricks,lime/mortar), or other natural materials (stones, wood); these materials evoke a feelingof simplicity and origination. By the sea area, we mostly experience erosion happeningto the building because of humidity, salt water, etc... but these materials can resist windwithering very well, and when the environment interacts, for they are raw materialsderiving from nature, they would never cause any degradation or declination to thebuilding compared to such other flashy materials, and of course the building still also

Rooms are hidden underneathand arranged like footsteps pattern along the slopes. The roof of each room will be theveranda of the fellow higher ones. Inside the rooms, even in the bedrooms, from thesofas, the dining rooms or toilets, you might also look through with the view to privatefront garden. The whole section belongs to the mountain slopes; it looks like a garden,a forest with exotic curved lines of footsteps pattern. This kind of design raises themagnificent background for the upper classical villas.

The childhoodFor all my childhood, I lived in Tay Ninh, a country like any other place, with

my parents, brothers and sisters in our private house. Our home was designed followingthe Southern style, called the principal residence. Above was a huge roof and beneath weresmall basic divided units, in which the altar made up nearly one third of the house, otherswere flexible in use, basically I called it the emty. The house was available for nearly tenpeople; almost there was no private room and no personal property that when the nightcame, everyone relaxed in a sleeping area. In me, there was no sense of property, yet Ithink this is as gentle as peace and currently, I am not tied with such problems.

I wonder if people would minimize property & binding? Not only do I want tomention the material but also the spiritual when freedom appears.

The natural life has trained people most effectively and mysteriously, not inwords, not in theory; but architecture is really a part of it. Architecture and lifestyleregulate each other. With such different lifestyles, there were people who lived in Cu Chitunnels, in prison or a vagabond is lack of ownership. Thus, people actually definethe architecture.

The room

Depending on the conditions, materials and constructional techniques, we cancreate a space to describe something, but that is a very close room, and within thisspace, arose the dirty , existed an imprisonment; then people must use such techniquesto resolve, but those also cause the problems of technology.

The rooms of nature

Nature is an original source, a center of life which can socialize with humanimmediately, without conditions, as a flow, such as roads, and are not oppressive. Roomsare not important anymore, it might be only the place where you can sit, can lie down...it is about a direct communication with nature.

Nature should be introduced logically and naturally, not being stuffy thatwe will be stuffy too. When it is considered as itself, it will transmit the most sacred

things. It is your origin and you will be receiving energy from it.

Rooms - Private & still

Rooms offer you privacy. Rooms are to be ensured with cleanliness of thesound, physical objects, energy, nature, yet it is only a condition, an environment andit can not take you to the still. The actual strength of the rooms is the quietness. It isa limitation of architecture.

When you are in an empty room alone, it gives you a sense of privacy andstill, that is the true power of it. It gives you a certain concentration. Concentrating does

waste such an amount of energy because it is a focused activity. Rooms will purify theenvironment so as to transmit the privacy and still through this kind of task.

Apartments - communication space

Apartment itself is a communication space, not by connecting all the otherfunctional rooms. In common, when building a house, the original idea is to set therequirement for our rooms, then connecting them, and thats all, I wonder why? Is thisan assignment, a division, or a reflection of mechanical distribution like humans? The

The continuum of Inspiration

Ten years ago, my parents had an idea.

Ten years ago, they darted in implementing an idea that almost their businessfriends thought it was impossible.

The idea has begun.

They looked for the future self-improvement of Vietnamese, though theythemselves still did not completely understand the idea and also was not capable tomaterialize it.

Without cooperator, they did everything themselves, for a vision. A series ofproposal was rejected. After many months of seeking, they almost lost their hope; then an

young architect, named Phan Hung Hung with no experience, no lobby, was introducedto them. A few more proposals has delivered but until the last one, a small eight floorsbuilding on a 16x18m site with a strong and simple form, had convinced my parents.

This building is also the first project that the trio: Investor (my parents),Architect (Mr. Phan Hung Hung), Structural engineer (Mr. Tran Dinh Hai), the two latterwas still very young, just about 30, cooperated with each others. They has continuouslycooperated in three more larger projects and one has been gone into being.

Faith and determination, passion and courage, these were the most importantthings that I have learned from them. Ten years is not a long time but it is enough

to realize many things when we has continuously interacted with each others and withthe house, living in it, modifying it and modifying ourselves. This house is not a simplyconstructed entity with form and space. It is a place filled with memories, simple andfamiliar, without strong impression or transient ornament. That is what the real architec-ture needs, no fashion, no treating emotion, just only the simple inspiration.
