www.lgontario.ca News release For immediate release Lieutenant Governor’s message on National Aboriginal Day Toronto, June 21, 2015. Her Honour the Hon. Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, released the following message on the occasion of National Aboriginal Day. On National Aboriginal Day, we celebrate the contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Canadians to our society. Let us be mindful of the diversity and richness of Aboriginal cultures, and pay tribute to the strength and perseverance demonstrated by so many indigenous communities in Ontario and across Canada. As The Queen’s representative in Ontario, the Lieutenant Governor is privileged to have a unique relationship with Aboriginal peoples based on a long history of mutual respect. As we approach the 150th anniversary of Confederation, we must be diligent in working to reconcile the ongoing legacy of cultural assimilation with how we wish to see ourselves as Canadians 150 years from now and beyond. I encourage every Ontarian to bear witness to the all too often untapped source of traditional Aboriginal knowledge that resides in this land, and to commit to learning more about the history, culture, and present-day realities of Aboriginal Canadians. Together we must partner to build a just and sustainable Ontario that enables inclusive prosperity for all. National Aboriginal Day is celebrated annually on June 21.
