Welcome students to one of the most dynamic schools in south Louisiana where students are taught that God is 1st and education is 2nd and the future is yours. Parents I want to personally thank you for allowing your children to be a part of our school. We will give and do our BEST for them so that they will become an asset to our country.

We will continue to strive for excellence to provide your children with a first rate education while trying to assist you with the development of Godly character in them that our students may move on from us to be productive and successful members of society.

We want you to know that we are partners in the academic success of your children and we ask that you support the academics provided at school by insisting that your children work and study hard at home as well. Together we will deliver a bright future for all of our students. Please be involved and connected to what goes on at school. We want you to know us and we want you to see what we are trying to accomplish. Feel free to come or call at any time with questions, concerns, or simply to observe what we do on a daily basis. FORWARD

This handbook has been prepared to assist students and parents in understanding the policies that will be used at Lighthouse Christian Preparatory School (LCPS). It provides a broad framework within which we all must communicate, work, and study. While every attempt has been made to cover the many areas of concern to students and parents, it should be noted that no digest of regulations could cover every possible circumstances. In situations which arise that are not specifically covered in this handbook, the Principal, in consultation with the faculty when necessary, and with direction from the overseers or the Board, has the responsibility for making determinations addressing the particular circumstance. The Board shall ensure that the administration, teachers, students, and parents of LCPS abide by the spirit and constructs set forth in this handbook. The Overseers reserve the right to override any judgments made by the school, its principal, its board, committees, and its policies.

Attendance at Lighthouse Christian Preparatory School (LCPS) is a sign of the students’ and parents’ willingness to accept both the regulations stated in this handbook and the decisions of the administration in the interpretation of these regulations.

MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of Lighthouse Christian Preparatory School (LCPS) is to assist families in the Christian training of their children through academic, spiritual, social, and developmental contexts. Our goal is to help the children in our care to make the best of their God-given talents and abilities, to challenge themselves to achieve beyond their expectations, and to be prepared to live a fruitful Christian life.

PHILOSOPHY

We believe that God spoke and made our existence possible to shelter our children from worldly, destructive influences. As such, we are a meeting place for those who wish to grow in Christian attitudes and values. Through affirming the worth and dignity of each individual, we seek to nurture and prepare our students to take their respective places in the community as responsible Christians. Within this supportive environment, our students are not only challenged in their creative and intellectual abilities, but also challenged to become capable of making decisions in a life of service and witness to the testimony of Jesus Christ. The parents are supported as the primary educators in the spiritual, moral, intellectual, physical, social, and

cultural development of students. Parents, in turn, are to be supporters of the school in securing and maintaining adequate facilities and resources. The development of students is encouraged by structuring an educational climate that promotes knowledge, personal growth, and self-discipline. LCPS is espoused to the ideology of a community in which obedience and respect for authority and mutual trust, mutual respect, and mutual responsibility for others are lived examples for all. We stand, without apology, for the gospel of Jesus Christ, and the highest standards of holiness, morality and Christian behavior. We embrace an outreach ministry to students in the surrounding community, but never to the detriment of our Christian identity. Attendance at LCPS is a privilege, not a right.

ACCREDITATION AND ADMISSIONS

Lighthouse Christian Preparatory School is state-approved by the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary education and is recertified annually in October. LCPS has not chosen to accredit through any other agencies at this time.

Lighthouse Christian Preparatory School does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, or national or ethnic origin in its educational programs or activities. The school is in compliance with the judgment decree from the State court case of Brumfield vs. Dodd. Lighthouse Christian administration reserves the right not to accept students who were expelled from other schools or possess poor grades and/or poor discipline records.

General Admission Requirements:

1. Students will not be considered for acceptance unless applications and testing information are complete.

2. Students transferring to Lighthouse Christian from another school must have a good disciplinary record from a previous school.

3. Students are admitted on an individual basis following an interview or orientation with the student and parent (s). Policies addressing education and behavior are explained and a commitment to conform to these policies and requirements is a prerequisite for admission. In situations where an interview or orientation has not been attended, this handbook will serve as the explanation of policy and acceptance of policy.

4. Acceptance of any student is contingent upon receipt of “official” school records, as well as the evaluation of the required documents.

5. A decision of parent(s) or guardian(s) to enroll their child(ren) in LCPS is an acceptance of all policies set forth by this handbook and the administration of the school. This

includes but is not limited to adherence to expulsions, suspensions, discipline and drug policies, search and seizure of persons and property, and academic expectations. Final determinations of adherence to policy are at the full discretion of the principal and administration.

Additional Admission Requirements

Interviews can’t be scheduled unless the following documents have been provided.1. A completed and signed application2. The student section on the application completed 3. A copy of the most recent Report Card4. A completed Student Assessment-Discipline Report from previous school5. A copy of an unofficial transcript from previous school (6th-12th)6. Schedule an interview or orientation with the Principal (6th-12th grade students must

be present)

The following documents must be submitted at the time of the interview.

1. A copy of Birth Certificate2. A copy of current immunization record3. A copy of social security card4. A completed Medical History form (one per student)5. A completed Family Information Packet (one per family)

The following must be paid to secure the student’s registration, upon acceptance of the Admission’s Committee

Book/Registration Fee Per Student

Acceptance of any student is contingent upon receipt of “Official” school records, as well as the evaluation of the above documents.Students are admitted on an individual basis following an interview with the student and parents. During the interview school policies, curriculum, academics, and behavioral guidelines are explained, and a commitment to conform to these policies and requirements is a prerequisite for admission. Lighthouse Christian provides all rights and privileges to all students in all programs and activities, and does not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, or national origin.

REGISTRATION/BOOK FEES

Registration Dates

During the month of January, applications for re-enrollment of presently enrolled students will be accepted before new applications are processed. Enrollment will open to new students on March 1.

Registration/Book Fees

6th – 12th Grade $525.00

- All textbooks are the property of Lighthouse Christian and are to be returned to school at the end of the school term or at the time of student transfer.

Additional Fees:

Technology Fee - $100Building Fee - $100

8th Grade Award & Graduation Fees are $100 per student and are due by February 28th of the school year. All 12th Grade students must pay a $300 graduation fee by December 31st of the school year. This fee does not cover the graduation ceremony itself. Students are to raise the money for the ceremony.

TUITION

There are 3 options for paying tuition:

Option 1 – Pay tuition annually by August 1st .Option 2 – Pay equal monthly payments (1/10 of balance) due on the 1st day of each month starting August 1st of the school year and ending March 1st. The remaining balance must be paid by March 15th.Option 3 – Make agreed upon arrangements with the Administrator and Pastoral approval of at least $200 per child per month. The complete balance must be paid out by March 15th.

Special rates/waivers are given to tithe paying members of Lighthouse for Jesus Ministry. All tuition is due on the 1st of each month. A student may not come to school after the 5th of the month if tuition is delinquent. A late fee of $25 will be assessed by the 10th of the month.

All tuition payments for the school year must be completed by March 15th.

All families receiving discounted tuition are expected to work for Lighthouse for Jesus and/or its subsidiaries to earn amounts discounted.

UNIFORM REQUIREMENTS

General Requirements for Boys and Girls

No jewelry except watches. Note: Watches should be for school wear and not attract undue attention

Hair is to be neat, clean, and combed. Use of dyes and bleach is prohibited. Extreme hairstyles and colors will not be accepted.

Nail polish, French manicures, and nail decorations are prohibited. Nails should be cut at a modest natural length.

Hats, caps, doo rags, scarves, sweatbands, dark glasses, curlers, wigs, and false hair (except for medical reason) are not allowed. If false hair is present, it must be modestly pulled back and pinned into a bun until the false hair is removed. No extreme hair decorations of any kind are to be worn

Boys should be clean cut. No designs are to be cut into the hair, no mohawks nor other extreme styles will be accepted. Hair must be NEAT.

The uniform includes not only the items that should be worn, but also the manner in which the items are worn. Neatness and modesty are overriding considerations.

Boys’ shirts should be tucked in at all times. Tattoos are prohibited. If a tattoo exists, it must be covered. School uniforms will be worn Monday – Thursday. Friday has been given as “School

Spirit Day”.

Uniforms for Boys:

Trousers: 6 th -12 th - Will be Plain Khaki slacks, they may have pleated front or flat front and will need to have belt loops. No joggers or cargo pants. No dark tan or camel colored. No khaki jeans. Pants must be long enough to cover shoe and may not be rolled up.

9 th – 12 th - Boys can wear Navy or Khaki slacks as described above.

All -Brown or black belt is required to be worn daily. No shorts, cargo pants, or oversized pants will be worn to school. Slabbing is not tolerated.

Shirts:

6 th – 8 th – Light Blue polo style shirts with the school logo (Can be purchased at Young’s Fashion or other uniform shop. Logo from Young’s.).

9 th – 12 th – Light Blue or Light Yellow polo style shirt with school logo is expected.

All – White t-shirts, white turtlenecks, or white thermals may be worn under shirts.

Shoes: 6th – 12 th – Shoes should be ALL white or ALL black. No other color can be present on the shoe or trim.

Uniforms for Girls:

Skirts: 6 th – 8 th – Girls must wear school regulation plaid skirts. (Fabric can be purchased from the school). Pattern numbers must be obtained from school.

9 th – 12 th – Girls uniform plaid skirt fabric can be purchased from the school. Girls may select a skirt or jumper dress pattern of choice. Make sure the skirts length have at least 3 inches BELOW the knee. Skirts should be long and loose. No split should be higher than 1 inch below the front and back of the knee. A skirt is too tight if it cups under the bottom portion of a young ladies rear end. It is also too tight if it contains stretch creases across the front where the tops of the legs bend. The school skirt should be loose fitting. NO FRONT SPLITS.

Shirts :6 th – 8 th – Girls are required to wear light blue polo shirts with the school logo

9 th – 12 th – Light blue or light yellow polo shirt with school logo is expected.

All – White t-shirts, white turtlenecks, or white thermals may be worn under shirts.

Socks: 6 th – 12 th - Socks should be black, blue, or white and must show. Girls may also wear tights in these colors. NO THERMAL OR PAJAMA OR JOGGING PANTS MAY BE WORN UNDER SKIRT.

Outerwear for all: 6 th – 12 th – Only navy blue sweaters, sweatshirts with the school plaid lettering or regulation sweatshirts, or ALL navy LIGHTWEIGHT jackets will be accepted in class. LCPS School Letter Jackets are allowed. Cheer jackets ARE NOT allowed.

9 th – 12 th – Girls and boys are required to purchase and wear a PE uniform as required by the instructor.

Fridays – Fridays will be designated as jeans day. The student may wear approved PLAIN jeans (no slabbing, not character pictures) or, for girls, jean skirts which meet holiness standards. Skirt should meet the length and fit requirements mentioned in the plaid skirt instructions. The jeans should be BLUE in color. No thigh skin may be shown through holes in jeans. Students will wear a Lighthouse Spirit shirt. These will be ordered and purchased at the beginning of the year. Outerwear remains the same.

DROP OFF/PICK UP

Students can be dropped to school no earlier than 7:05AM in the front of the church. Students will be in front of church for pickup between 2:15- 2:35PM. Pick up after 2:35

PM will result in a $5 late fee added to your tuition. If parents are divorced or separated and one parent is not allowed to see or pick up the

child (ren), we must have, on file, a certified copy of the court order for Final Judgment. It is also necessary, in all other cases, that if anyone other than a parent is to pick up your child (ren), that you give the name (s) of those people to the office.

ATTENDANCE POLICY

A student has a serious obligation to report to all of his/her classes. A student who has been absent must, on the day of his/her return to school, present an

approved formal excuse (Failure to present this will result in an unexcused absence). Absence from school for whatever reason does not excuse a student from the obligation

of preparing his/her class work, except sometimes in the case of an educational absence.

A student may not attend or participate in any school event or school activity on the date of his/her absence/check out unless they have a current year GPA of 3.0 or above. Academics are a priority. No student may participate if the absence or check out is due to illness.

(6th – 8th) A student that has 14 days excused or unexcused absence will be retained in their current grade.

(9th – 12th) A student is considered absent a full day if he/she misses more than two class periods (Attending a school activity without permission of the Principal after being absent from more than one class period that day will result in disciplinary action).

(9th – 12th) A student with more than 7 absences in a semester will not receive credit from that class according to federal law. THE 7 INCLUDES EXCUSED absences.

A tardy student must be checked in by a parent/guardian or the student will not be allowed into class.

(9th – 12th) If a student becomes ineligible for credit due to excessive absences, he/she should still attend class as the grade for the class will still be averaged in to their overall grade point average (GPA). To cease attendance of a class would result in a grade of F.

Excused Absence : The student is absent for a justifiable reason such as personal illness, serious illness in the immediate family, or a professional medical or dental appointment. He/she is allowed to make up whatever was missed during the absence. Students scheduled to take a test or submit work on the day of their absence must make up the test or work immediately upon return to school. If a test or work announced on the day of the student is absent, the student will have as many days to make up the test or work as they are consecutively absent.

Unapproved/Unexcused Absence : The student is absent for an unjustifiable reason simply as a matter of convenience to self or family, such as out of town trips, work, etc., he/she is held responsible for the material covered, but forfeits the right to take tests or turn in assignments that were due on the day of his/her absence.

Approved Unexcused Absence : The student is absent for some of the reasons mentioned in the prior item, but has received prior approval of the Principal. This student may take tests or turn in assignments BEFORE the absence.

Educational Absence : The student is absent from his/her regular class because of a school-related activity. Such absences are not counted as days absent from school, though the student’s excused absence will be recorded on school records. Students with educational absences are required to make up whatever was missed during their absence.

MEDICATIONMedicine. Parents are advised to give medication (prescription and non-prescription) at home on a schedule other than school hours. IF it is necessary that medication be given during school hours, the following procedure MUST be followed:

1. No medication of any form, prescription or non-prescription will be allowed on a student's person at any time. Parents shall be responsible for personally delivering medication to the office. All medication will be stored for the student. It will be the student's responsibility to take medicine at the proper time.

2. The school will not provide any medication and school personnel will not administer any medication or injections. ("Administer" for the purposes of this policy does not include school personnel handing the medication to the child as per parental instruction.)

3. A Medication Log will be maintained by the school for any medicine dispensed. 4. All medicine left in the office for more than a week after last dispensing date will be

disposed of. (Exceptions will be made in the case of chronic illness.) 5. Parents will notify the office in writing of their request to dispense medication to their

child, including all directions and special administrations, and shall supply all necessary items needed for the administration of the medication. If medication is not properly labeled, it will not be taken.

6. All medication must be self-administered or administered by the parent. If self-administered, the child must report to the office for the medication. ("Administer" for the purposes of this policy does not include school personnel handing the medication to the child as per parental instruction.)

7. The school will keep all medicine in a secure place. 8. The appropriate Medication and Release from Liability form must be obtained from the

office, completed, and filed in the office prior to any medication being administered at school.

9. Any medication that is required to be permanently at school for emergency situations must have a Medication and Release from Liability form submitted quarterly.

FIELD TRIPS

Educational field trips are planned throughout the school year. A permission slip will be sent home for your signature in order for your child to participate in any school sponsored field trip or activity. If the permission slip is not returned by the due date, the student will not be allowed to participate in the activity.

COMMUNICABLE DISEASES

A teacher or administrator that reasonably suspects that a student has a communicable disease shall immediately notify the principal and/or family. The student will need to go home. All communicable diseases such as pink eye, ringworm, measles, will require a written clearance from a doctor before returning to school.

GRADE/CREDIT POLICY

There are various requirements that a student must meet depending on whether one is referring to high school graduation, college entry, or receiving scholarships. All of these requirements are met if a student takes and passes all available classes at LCPS.

Grading scale is as follows for 9th – 12th Grade:A 92 – 100B 83 – 91C 73 – 82D 65 – 72F 64 and below

There are three (3) ways that a student could be denied credit for a class:1. Failure to receive at least 65% as a final grade2. More than 7 absences in a class in a semester3. Failing a course in the final grading period of the semester (at teacher’s discretion)

Please note that with numbers 2 and 3 students may have excellent grades and still not receive credit. The attendance rule governing #2 is federal law.

Senior Academic Honors

A period of 2 years of residency within the school during the period between 9th -12th grade, including the entire senior year, must be established before a student is considered for valedictorian, salutatorian, or historian.

The scholastic ranking of seniors shall be determined after the final exams of their senior year.

Students with identical numeric GPA’s extended to four places beyond the decimal without rounding off and with the same number of honors courses and the same overall percentages in core courses will share the honor for which they are tied.

Transfer students whose transcripts contain only letter grades, median grades will be used.

Students must have at least a cumulative average of 3.0 to receive honor titles of Valedictorian, Salutatorian, or Historian.

Seniors are required to take at least six classes in the year, five of which must be academic. If there is room in their schedule, they may have an off period or dual enrollment experience. In order to receive this privilege, the Senior must have a good discipline record and an academic GPA of at least 2.0 with no Fs in any grading period.

6th – 8th Grading scale is as follows:

A 93 – 100B 85 – 92.49C 75 – 84.49D 67 – 74.49F 66 – Below

9th – 12th Scheduling:

A four (4) year curriculum planner is included on the following pages to help plan your schedule and four years at LCPS. Course descriptions, LCPS Diploma Requirements, and requirements for TOPS eligibility can be discussed with the Principal upon request and will also be discussed at Open House and/or Orientation.

6th – 8th Standardized and LEAP Testing:

Students will participate in the state’s testing program. Non-scholarship students may also be required to take state or SAT tests. Testing fees may apply. (This fee is normally between $25-$50)

9th – 12th Tests:

Lighthouse Christian high schoolers will take Explore/Plan/ACT tests For all tests students should bring two #2 pencils and a calculator. No mechanical

pencils should be used. Students will also take end of course exams in Algebra I, Geometry, Biology, US History,

English II, and English III Non-scholarship students may incur a testing fee for these.

Student Academic Retention in a Grade The retention policy of LCPS is that a student may repeat only one grade level at LCPS. If a student has repeated a grade and fails again, he will be required to transfer out.

Middle School:

1. A student is retained if he fails two core subjects (English and/or literature, mathematics, history, science)

2. A student is retained if he fails one major and two minor subjects (Lab, Bible). 3. If a student fails a core subject, he should complete a summer school course

from an approved summer school program in order to continue as a student at LCPS. A student meeting requirements through an approved summer school program will have his final grade adjusted accordingly and changed on the LCPS report card. Both grades will appear on the student’s cumulative record.

4. Students must pass standardized tests in accordance with current state policy.

High School: Failure to meet course requirements will result in failure of the course. A student is

retained if he fails two core subjects in the regular school year (English, mathematics, history, science) and may be subject to academic dismissal. However, meeting course requirements through an approved credit recovery summer program, independent study, correspondence coursework, etc. may allow the student to be promoted.

A Carnegie unit for failed courses will not be issued until requirements are met as listed above. A High School student who successfully completes course requirements will have his GPA adjusted accordingly for the course failed during the school year. Both sets of grades will appear on the student’s cumulative record.

MAKE-UP POLICY

It is the responsibility of the individual student to see his/her teacher(s) to make up any graded work missed because of an excused absence. Teachers are only required to allow students to make up work for excused absences. Students will have as many days to make up work as they are absent if the assignment or test was announced on a day the student was absent. If the assignment or test was announced while the student was in attendance or if it is a regularly scheduled assignment, the work must be made up immediately upon return unless teacher makes other arrangements. Make-up tests will be scheduled at a time designated by the teacher. If a student fails to make up a test and makes no other arrangement within the allotted time, at the discretion of the teacher, the student may not be given the test and will receive an automatic failing grade.

Note: Athletes are required to be fulltime students and maintain a 2.0 GPA to participate in sports. A fee of $40-60 is generally expected for varsity sports. A fee of $10-20 is generally expected for junior high sports.

PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCE

Any parent who wishes to have a conference with a teacher is welcome to do so. Please do not attempt to meet with a teacher during school hours (7:20AM – 2:20PM). Call the school for an appointment and the school secretary will notify the teacher. The secretary or teacher will call to set up an appointment. Should a conference with the Principal or the Principal and teacher be desired, the same procedure should be followed.

CAMPUS POLICIES

Cell Phone/Office Phone/Electronics Policy:Use of cell phones, head phones, MP3 players, and other electronic equipment are prohibited for use by students. We discourage all students from bringing such devices as they are not needed and, in fact, prohibited at school. The devices need not be in use for confiscation. Students are not to have these things on their person nor in their lockers or bags. Students found in violation of this policy will have devices confiscated. Devices and all of its inner workings including SIM card, will become property of the school until the last day of the school year. Do not allow students to bring these things if you have any problems with the confiscation policy. Pastor Donnie requested that no parents contact him concerning the confiscated equipment. Students may not utilize the office phone during school hours except in the case of illness or emergency. Students will be allowed to use the office phone after school if they are in need of rides, etc.

Lockers:Each student will be provided with a locker in which to place his/her belongings. Students should only bring to school what will fit in their lockers as this is their space. ALL books and supplies CAN fit in their locker. Students are to utilize only their locker. Students may not bring bags, purses, garments, extra papers, etc. into the classroom. All of these belongings MUST be placed in the locker. No table, corner, shelf, or any other convenient location may be used for student items. Items left hanging around school, in the hallway, or on top of lockers will be confiscated and thrown away or sold. The school is not responsible for items not locked up in student’s locker. ABSOLUTELY NO FOOD IS TO BE KEPT IN STUDENT LOCKERS OVERNIGHT.

Transportation:Students are expected to follow parish and city ordinances in the operation of their motor vehicles. Students are to park their cars in the student parking area only (in the part of the lot farthest from school buildings). Closer parking is reserved for Lighthouse faculty, handicapped persons, and adult visitors. No student is to park his/her car in a manner that blocks another car or prevents another vehicle from entering or exiting the parking lot. Students may NOT return to their cars for any reason other than to leave the school grounds for dismissal at the

end of the school day. Students may not loiter or hang out in their car nor allow other students to do so. Automatic in-school suspension is assigned to students violating this rule. Students may not drive other students to or from school or any school related event or activity without written request of the parent/guardian. Car driving students are not to loiter at school after school, but must get immediately into their cars and leave.

Emergency Closing:In the event of a weather emergency, Lighthouse will follow the emergency procedures of the Vermilion Parish School Board regarding the cancellation of classes unless otherwise indicated by the Principal. When possible, closures will be broadcast on local radio and TV. Parents are requested to listen. When in doubt, follow instructions for Vermilion Parish public schools.

Parent Groups:Becoming involved in the development of the goals and vision of Lighthouse can be extremely rewarding and provides much needed support to the school. Additionally, parents become more aware of the needs and environment of the school to which they are sending their children. Parents are needed to support the teachers, staff, and student body, beautify the school and promote and publicize the positive aspects of LCPS. Through the hard work and help of many parents, students and staff members, we can bake, cook, clean, paint, and sell our way into a brighter future for our children. All parents are invited to join in helping with school fundraisers, selling concessions, working games, donating items etc. All help is appreciated and we thank you for working with us.We do ask parents abstain from using student groups to do personal fundraising for non-school authorized events. We ask instead that parents take a more global approach to fundraising by ensuring that all school financial obligations of students are met prior to raising money for any student trips, socials, or individual activities. We ask that all fundraisers be authorized and coordinated by LCPS for both order and fairness.

Drug Abuse:LCPS is an alcohol and drug-free campus. Lighthouse does not allow possession, consumption, or distribution of alcoholic beverages or drugs on campus or at any school related activity, nor does it allow the attendance at school or at a school related function, a student judged by the supervisor of the function to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Such activity is a grave violation of school policy and Christian principles and will result in referral for EXPULSION. Parents will be informed. Spiritual intervention, suspension, expulsion and/or referral to the law enforcement authorities is to be determined by the Principal with confirmation from the Pastor. Expulsion referral is at sole discretion of the administration of the school. In RARE cases of extreme duress, a student may not be expelled immediately. In such cases, the student and his/her parents must comply with the recommendations of Lighthouse in fulfilling the intervention plan in order to remain a student of Lighthouse. If a student is permitted to remain at Lighthouse, he/she will be on probation for the remainder of his/her time at Lighthouse pertaining to any further instance of this type. A second instance will result in an

expulsion hearing. The school reserves the right to conduct searches of students, their bags, lockers, or vehicle while they are on school campus, at a school sponsored function at school or away from school, or to authorize law enforcement agencies to be involved. Such searches may be random or suspected students. All attempts will be made to contact parents/guardians in the event that such inspections become warranted but such contact is not guaranteed. Attendance at LCPS indicates a student’s and parent’s agreement with these search and seizure policies. Parents and students are expected to cooperate with the Lighthouse mandatory random drug testing policy. Refusal to cooperate will result in automatic expulsion from Lighthouse.

DISCIPLINE

Lighthouse students are expected to conduct themselves as young ladies and gentlemen professing Godliness. There are three overall considerations for behavior:

Respect Yourself: Do only those things that will help you to achieve a successful and healthful future.

Respect Others: Treat others with courtesy, justice, truthfulness, and compassion. Respect Property: Take care of your things and take care of those things which we

share.

Discipline Addendum. LCPS strives to teach students self-discipline and raise their level of personal responsibility. As such, LCPS utilizes a reflective approach to discipline which causes students to identify their levels of behavior and elicit contingencies for themselves which are acceptable to those in authority. In the most extreme circumstances, when this is lacking, external discipline is required in order to help the students understand the error of conduct, to discourage repeated acts of the same kind, and to deter others from similar behavior. Every teacher shares in the responsibility of corrections and disciplining a student who is out of order. It is the belief of the administration and staff at LCPS that this disciplinary plan will assist in providing a safer, happier and healthier atmosphere for your child to learn.

Four levels of behavior are taught to staff, students, and parents. The first two levels, A and B, are unacceptable. The latter two levels, C and D are acceptable. Our goal is help students realize their ability to operate at level D. The Four levels follow:

D – Democracy – Develops self discipline; demonstrates initiative; displays

responsibility; the motivation to behave appropriately is internal

C – Cooperation/Conformity – considerate; complies; conforms to peer pressure; the motivation to behave appropriately is external

LCPS has adopted 12 non-negotiable expectations of all students. If these are followed, a student will almost assuredly stay out of trouble:

1. Attend school daily and come on time.2. Leave all unauthorized outer clothing in your locker.3. Move quickly and quietly from class to class without horseplay. Enter the room quietly,

take your seat and begin work immediately. Engage in class work during class time.4. Be prepared to work every day. Bring paper, assignment organizer, pens, pencils, rulers,

protractors, and whatever equipment is required for learning.5. Do homework nightly. There is homework help available at various times. 6. Eat only in the designated eating area.7. Do not bring cards, MP3 players, games, headphones, cell phones, laser pens, and/or

any other items not related to academic instruction. They will be confiscated and become property of the school. They should be checked in to the office at school.

8. Keep your desk area clean and keep your belongings in your locker when not in use. Do NOT bring back packs to class unless told to do so.

9. Do not engage in physical or verbal violence. Learn to disagree without being disagreeable. Respect each other.

10. Respect the building. Do not graffiti or deface any part of the building. Use furniture according to its intended use.

11. Respect every adult in the building and submit to their authority.12. Wear the school uniform daily according to policy.

Contingencies for conduct violations will be directly related to the unacceptable behavior and will consist chiefly of the loss of freedoms and privileges or addition of work or service. However, it is not against Lighthouse policy to employ corporal punishment. These methods will be employed at the discretion of the Principal and/or Lighthouse Board with signed release forms from the parent(s). If corporal measures are determined necessary by LCPS and a signed Corporal release form is not on file from the parent, the student will be suspended from school. Depending upon the severity of infractions, the sequence of behavior modification will be:

1. Involved teacher elicits contingency from student

2. Assignment to Lighthouse in school suspension (LISS)3. Referral to the Principal4. Other plans of action (such as corporal punishment) and contact with the parents.5. Suspensions6. Expulsion

Most issues will be handled at the first and second steps, with a few needing to proceed to the third step. The other steps are in place for extreme circumstances and will be used as necessary. The intent of disciplinary action is to improve behavior and allow for academic success. As such, the student is expected to adjust behaviors accordingly.

Behavioral Infractions .

Minor Infractions

1. Running/horseplay/loudness in the hall, cafeteria, classes, etc. 2. Disruption of school/class, assemblies, or school ceremonies. 3. Chewing gum or eating candy without permission.4. Parking illegally or violating the parking permit requirement. 5. Failure to clean up after eating lunch.6. Littering.7. Failure to return signed school documents. 8. Uniform violations.* 9. Bringing any type of electronics on campus without permission.** 10. Disorderly conduct or disruption in the cafeteria

These infractions will result in students being documented in Teacherease and required to correct the behavior and/or come up with a contingency approved by the teacher involved. Students who continue to have minor infractions will be disciplined according to consequences stated in the Major I infraction category. Generally, 3 or more minor infraction logs in a week will result in loss of Hang Time on Fridays.

*Usually students will be checked during first hour for dress code violations. If a student is not in proper uniform he/she will be sent to the Office to call home to get his/her proper uniform sent to school. The uniform is expected to be corrected. Infractions will be issued accordingly.

** Any electronic device brought to school will be confiscated by the authority and will become property of LCPS until the end of the year. Cellular phones are not to be brought to school. Violation will result in confiscation of the device and disciplinary action.

Major I Infractions

1. Profanity 2. Inappropriate public display of affection or lustful acts.3. Cutting class/leaving class without permission 4. Disorderly conduct or teasing or belittling another student 5. Failure to report for or complete a contingency or consequence. 6. Inappropriate behavior at Chapel or in the cafeteria 7. Willful disobedience to any school employee 8. Jeopardizing the safety of others 9. Lying 10. Misuse of school property 11. Continued violations of the same Minor infractions

These infractions will result in acceptable contingencies being agreed upon by the staff member involved or being assigned to work detention, LISS, or writing of personal essays. These infractions do not require 3 violations to receive loss of hang time. Loss may be automatic. Any person who receives work detention but does not show up without offering a valid excuse (as determined by the Disciplinarian) will be assigned a 1 day suspension for the next school day. There will be ONE automatic contingency for these violations. Behavior will be logged.

Major II Infractions

1. Disrespect to faculty/staff 2. Cheating/plagiarism or the intent to do so 3. False calls in behalf of yourself or another student 4. Forgery of parent/guardian signature on notes, papers, report cards, progress reports,

etc. 5. Minor vandalism (Restitution required in addition to consequence) 6. Theft (For property values of $20 or less. Restitution required along with consequence) 7. Truancy violation (absent from school without parental permission)

These infractions will result in students being assigned to work detention/personal essay AND one day LISS. Any student who commits two Major II offenses in the same grading period will be given 1 day of out of school suspension. For the third and any subsequent Major II offense, the student will be disciplined as a Severe I infraction. Behavior will be logged.

Severe I Infractions

1. Gross misbehavior

These infractions will result in the student being assigned to one day out of school suspension and require a personal essay to return. Behavior will be logged. Two Severe I infractions in one semester will result in a two day out of school suspension. A third offense throughout the year will result in a three day out of school suspension. A fourth results in expulsion hearing.

Severe II Infractions

1. Indecent exposure 2. Intimate acts 3. Open/persistent defiance of authority with perceived threat4. Extortion (obtaining something by threats or intimidation)5. Possession of a weapon

These infractions will result in the student being assigned to three days of out of school suspension. Behavior will be logged. If a student commits a second Severe II infraction, he/she will be recommended for expulsion.

Severe III Infractions

1. Arson 2. Physical assault of an employee 3. Possession and/or use of explosives 4. Use of any instrument as a weapon 5. Major vandalism (Restitution is required.) 6. Possession of a firearm 7. Possession or use of drugs

These infractions will result in a student being suspended until an expulsion hearing has been completed with principal and pastor and any board designee determined by the pastor and parents. Most times these infractions will result in an expulsion from school.

***Note: Parents will be notified by note, phone call or in person by the Disciplinarian or Principal for any infraction that your child has committed that results in detention, suspension, or expulsion hearing. If all attempts to reach parents are unsuccessful, the determinations and

consequences remain the same. It is the parent’s responsibility to keep up to date contact information on file at school and to notify the school of any changes to personal information. Infractions that occur in the minor category will be followed up on with the parent if it is considered serious by the Principal or becomes a chronic problem with the student.

NOTE: Each time a student is assigned LISS or detention, they are moved up a disciplinary level. By the third disciplinary level, an attempt to contact a parent will be made as the next disciplinary will result in a suspension whether it was a major infraction or not. In other words, continued minor infractions may still result in out of school suspension if the student does not stop. Teachers may issue zeros on all classwork/tests missed due to suspension. Also, the Principal may suspend students from athletics or other extracurricular activities if deemed appropriate. Continued suspensions (usually 3 suspensions) will then result in recommendation for expulsion. Behaviors are expected to be corrected.

Essays. Essays are in integral part of suspensions at LCPS. The essay forces the students to reflect upon behavior, helps them to exercise much needed writing skills, and gives them a useful means to correct behavior. Essays may demand research of topics, research of scriptures, and simple persuasion or exposition from the student’s perspective. Students who require discipline start out at the beginning of disciplinary problems with 250 word essays based on the student’s age and violation. Continued disciplinary problems increase the number of words for that student to as much as 2500 words. Students ARE NOT ALLOWED to come back to school after an in or out of school suspension until ALL work assignments are complete.

Academic Dishonesty. Cheating is morally wrong and is considered to be a Major II offense at LCPS. Cheating is the improper acquisition or distribution of information pertinent to a term paper, quiz, test, or exam. During a quiz, test, or exam, a student may not have in his/her possession or in the vicinity of his/her desk any books, notebooks, or materials prohibited by the teacher. A student who cheats or has the clear intention to cheat on a homework assignment, quiz, test or exam will receive on the first offense a grade of zero in his/her file; the student's parent(s) will be notified by the teacher and he/she will receive disciplinary action. A second offense will also receive a zero and may result in suspension or an expulsion hearing.

Expulsions. Lighthouse Christian Preparatory school reserves the right to recommend for expulsion any student deemed not in keeping with the policies, principles, standards, or requirements of Lighthouse. Evaluation and determination of appropriateness of behaviors will be at the discretion of the administration of LCPS. LCPS decisions, in this regard, are final.

Due Process Student Expulsion Procedures :

Within one day of the recommendation for expulsion, the parents will be given a written or verbal notice of the reasons for the expulsion, and the date and time the expulsion panel will meet. All attempts will be made to contact the parent.

Proceedings will consist of a conference with the principal, pastor, one Board member designated by the pastor, one teacher not directly involved with the incident, the parent(s) and student, and any other pertinent individual(s).

The parents may invite one other pertinent individual to the conference with prior notification given to the principal within 24 hours of the scheduled meeting.

The expulsion proceeding panel (consisting of the principal, pastor, Board member, one teacher) will make the final decision and inform the family within 24 hours of the meeting.

Failure by the parents to attend the scheduled conference will waive any further due process rights of the parents and student.

The parents have one week to make any appeal to the Executive Committee of the Lighthouse for Jesus Board.

Classroom . The teacher of each class is in charge of discipline in the classroom. The student is expected to comply with regulations and disciplinary measures the teacher imposes. Faculty and staff members should always be addressed in a polite and respectful manner. No student is allowed in a classroom unless a teacher is present. No food or drink is to be brought into the classroom. Each student is responsible for the neatness of his/her classroom area especially the desk he/she uses. A student should not leave anything in the desk or classroom after class. Students must make sure that their area is neat and clean before leaving class.

Academic Discipline Policy. A student must establish and maintain a pattern of academic success while attending LCPS. A student failing to do so will be placed on Academic Probation. It is expected that the student will re-establish a pattern of academic success during any probationary period. It is our desire to give students on academic probation support and encouragement. We will prayerfully work with parents and students as long as there is some prospect for satisfactory achievement. Our goal is to see each student restored to good academic standing. The appropriate staff person will confer with the student and his/her parents to make recommendations and evaluate the student's progress.

A student is placed on Academic Probation if:1. His/her GPA is below 1.75 or 2. The student receives Fs in two core subjects in a grading period (English, Math,

Science, Social Studies).

A student on academic probation two consecutive grading periods or a third academic probation during enrollment will be required to withdraw from LCPS. If a student receives three or more Fs in any grading period, he/she will be asked to withdraw from Lighthouse Christian

Preparatory School. The school will help to provide a remediation plan in probationary cases, but it is the parent’s ultimate responsibility to provide necessary transportation or resources needed for this help and to ensure that the student is working while at home.

Academic probation is intended to be a warning to the parents and student that there is a serious problem which needs to be addressed. During the probation time the student is not allowed to participate in any school sponsored extracurricular activities.

ATHLETICS

As in everything we do, we expect LCPS athletic programs to allow students to develop spiritually. Furthermore, we expect the athletic and other extracurricular activities at LCPS to demonstrate clear Christ-like behavior. Why do we offer athletic activities for LCPS students? - give students an opportunity to compete - provide opportunities for Christian role models, relationships, and friendships - promote the values of teamwork - establish discipline - provide an avenue for conditioning and physical fitness - teach time management skills - character development - obedience & sacrifice

We have outlined below the expectations for behavior of all individuals involved in LCPS athletic programs. This includes our student athletes, coaches, parents, and spectators. It is our desire to provide a positive Christian example in practice and during athletic events.

Players Attitude is everything. Being a part of a team is a privilege. Players should have the attitude that the team is bigger than themselves. Poor sportsmanship will never be tolerated. Players should never complain about the officials. Disrespecting other players (on their own or the opponents’ team) will not be tolerated. Players should not feel entitled to playing time. This is the coach’s responsibility to manage. As discussed above, decisions on playing time will be based on attitude, effort, and in the case of the higher grades, skill level.

Parents Parents play a key role in this process, not only by their behavior at sporting events, but also in how they support these beliefs at home. Parents and other spectators at athletic events are expected to show good sportsmanship. We should strive for our “fan base” to promote sportsmanship and to exhibit Christ-like behavior. This will have a lasting impact on our young student athletes. Please keep in mind the influence we have not only on our youth, but also on other spectators, who may or may not know Christ.

In the event that a parent has a question with a situation or would like to discuss an issue, we ask that the following line of communication be followed. Parents should first talk to the Coach, then the Principal, and finally the Pastor.

LCPS Athletic Policy: It is the policy of the School that students may participate in inter-scholastic competition if they meet the academic, attitudinal, and physical requirements. Student failure to perform in school at an acceptable level (no pattern of missing work or late work, or no failing grades) will result in a probationary period of non-participation on athletic teams or sports activities. Probation will be initiated by teacher recommendation to the principal and coach. When the probation is initiated, the student will complete the Athletic Probation Form and be required to receive three teacher signature checks indicating progress has been made in that class (work completed satisfactorily, passing grades). Reinstatement of participation will be reported to the principal and coach.

1. A student in grades 6-12 must maintain at least a 2.0 average (C) with no F’s in major courses (English, math, history, science) and with no pattern of missing class work during the 6-week term to be eligible for regular participation in the athletic program (practice or games). 2. F’s in major courses OR pattern of missing class work will cause teacher’s or principal’s initiation of athletic probation.3. An “F” at the end of the last marking period does carry over to the beginning of the next year. The same policy applies to Cheer Squad members and transfer students. 4. A sports physical is required of all students participating in interscholastic sports because of the strenuous and demanding activity that may be involved.

LUNCH PROGRAM

Students are required to purchase lunch from the lunch program. Lunch program operate on a pre-pay monthly basis. (Currently $40/month)

No lunch may be brought to a student during school or lunch time. If an outside lunch is desired, a student must bring it in the morning.

Birthday parties are to be held away from school.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

REQUIREMENTS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS ADMISSION & ISSUANCE OF I-20 The admission of international students to Lighthouse Christian Preparatory School as a student will require the following in addition to requirements as set forth in LCPS regular admissions policy.

1. A $100.00 issuing fee for I-20 paid to LCPS and is non-refundable.2. Two months tuition must be paid in advance. International students will pay the full

tuition rate and will not be eligible for any LCPS discounts.3. All normal parts of the admissions application process must be complete as determined

by the admissions committee.4. Grade transcripts must be translated into English and received by the LCPS principal’s

office.5. Statement from the family’s bank of sufficient funds calculated in U.S. dollars for one

year’s tuition and living expenses in the United States.6. Proof of health insurance coverage in English while residing in the United States.7. Guardianship papers in English stating that the parent(s) gives custody to the named

guardian(s) while the student is attending LCPS. The guardian must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age. The document must also state that the student will be physically residing with the guardian. Document must be signed by custodial parent(s) and notarized.

8. The student must show an appropriate level of English communication skills to be admitted. LCPS takes no responsibility for student ESL (English as a Second Language) instruction. The parent or guardian takes responsibility for any additional tutoring or instruction in English beyond the LCPS current curricular program of instruction.

9. All fees as set forth above, and all completed application forms and information will be received before the I-20 issuance process is begun.
