He married Mary Todd Lincoln's four sons wereborn of whom died
three.

known.Finally, Lincoln was defeated in the vote of theConvention by
William L. Dayton, a
former senator to Congress from New Jersey.The failed nomination
of Lincoln reinforced hisreputation yet.

In the presidential election of November 6,1860 Lincoln won
39.82% of the popularvote (1,865,908 votes), Douglas tookthe 29.46%
(1,380,202 votes),Breckinridge won 18.10%(848,019 votes) and Bell
took a 12.62% (590,901votes).The three opponents of Lincoln had
added nearlythree million votes to less than two million Lincoln,
but inthe Electoral College Electors Major Lincoln had
180against 123 opponents totaling (152 needed towin). So Lincoln
was the victor and was elected president.

Washington.During his presidency, Lincoln is credited withfreeing
the slaves by the Emancipation Proclamation,though this only freed
the Confederacy in areas notcontrolled by the Union.The
proclamation made theabolition of slavery in therebel states were
an official war goal. This gave impetus
to the adoption of the thirteenth andfourteenthamendments to the
Constitution of the UnitedStates
