Historien fortælles kronologisk og tager os fra ca. 40 e.Kr. frem til nutiden.

Idéer til undervisningen Idéerne er tænkt som inspiration til engelskundervisningen og består af en række forslag til aktiviteter, forløb og projekter. Ideerne er sat ind i et skema, der er opdelt efter tre faser i undervisningen: Before watching, While watching & After watching.
Before watching

While watching
Introduction + 9 parts to the documentary
Watch each part separately and choose an activity (look below)
Cut out the notes from: Skematisk oversigt over tv-udsendelsernes historiske indhold (page 2 – 6) – one note for each part - give the students a copy each before watching each part to give them an idea to what they are going to watch.
First impression of London
Watch the introduction (c. 2 min.)
Which impression do you get of London?
Brainstorm on words to describe the first impression.
In pairs the students tell each other their first impression.
Watch and listen
-with focus on visuals
The students sit in pairs: student A and student B. Each student has to focus on a different aspect of the programme and write down keywords.
Student A: focus on the drama-reconstructions of the historical events. Does it seem realistic? Does it help the understanding of the events? Does it help to visualise the way of living in the past? Do you feel you get involved in the events?
Student B: focus on the experts when they talk.
How do they pronounce certain words? How do they emphasise words and sentences? What hand movements or gestures do the use? Do they seem to know what they talk about? Are they believable? Their use of the English language: vocabulary, formality, slang, variation, specific…?
After watching the part the students, in turns and using their keywords, explain to each other what they have observed and focused on.
Watch and listen
-with focus on words
Each student gets a number from 1-4 (student 1 – 4). Each student has to focus on different words used in the programme and write down the words they hear on post-it slips – one word / phrase for each post-it slip.
Student 1: focus on words to do with types of buildings and structures (nouns) e.g. roads, timber frame houses, forts, towers, churches, bridges, railways, tunnels, domes, skyscrapers...
Student 2: focus on descriptive words (adjectives/descriptive phrases) e.g. smelly, bustling, crowded, dirty, foul, rich, poor, a great big fire…
Student 3: focus on words to do with professions/kinds of jobs e.g. soldiers, rebel leaders, tradesmen, farmers, rulers, engineers, sailors, poets, architects, town planners, kings….
Student 4: focus on words to do with cultures and social belonging e.g. Romans, Celts, Anglo-Saxons, Normans, puritans, immigrants, workers, unemployed, prostitutes, criminals, poor, rich…
Put the students into groups of 4 with a representative from each number (1 +2 + 3+ 4):
The students put their post-it slips in the middle of the group to let everybody see.
In turns, the students pick up one or more post-it slips. On the basis of the word(s) the student tells the others in the group what they know due to what they have seen and heard in the programme.
EX: ‘timber frame houses’ -> There were lots of timber frame houses in London in the Middle Ages.
Re-Tell Watch a part – use the words from above – let the students in turns re-tell what they have seen.
