certificate, immunisation certificate and proof of address (Electricity / Gas account / rates notice / unaltered drivers licence) must accompany your application. These documents will be returned to you. Following the closing date for applications, the placement panel will consider all applications in line with the Department of Education and Communities criteria. All families will be informed in writing of the outcome. For further information, please contact the school office. OPPORTUNITY CLASS 2014 Last week information was provided about Opportunity Class (Year 5) placement for 2014, and how to apply. There was some confusion about where this class is situated. Our local Opportunity Class is at Maryland Public School, not here at EPS. An “Intention to Apply” form is attached in this newsletter for families interested in applying for Opportunity Class placement (Yr5) in 2014. If you wish to apply and do not have internet access, please complete the form attached and then you may collect an application form from the front office. Please note that online applications close this Friday May 17. PLAYGROUND AND SUPERVISION At Edgeworth we love parents to be involved in our school and also welcome children to visit as they wait for brothers and sisters to commence or finish the school day. We have recently completed a review of our playground procedures and respectfully request that you comply with the following safeguards, designed to help make our school environment happy and safe for our whole school community. In order to achieve this, we ask parents to help by:

Keeping toddlers and pre-schoolers under direct supervision and away from the fixed equipment.

Encouraging students to be in the designated supervision areas with their friends.

Supporting the teachers on morning playground duty by keeping to the outer parts of the K-2 COLA area or under the bottom COLA area next to 1L classroom.

Scheduling a set appointment time with their child’s class teacher to discuss progress / concerns etc. A teacher on playground duty must be able to supervise students without distraction.

Moving away from the playground areas when the bell goes to start the school day.

Morning supervision at Edgeworth Public School begins at 8.45am. No students should be arriving at school prior to this time. All students who arrive at school before 8.45am are expected to sit under the PRIMARY COLA until the bell goes.

Out of School Hours (OOSH) care is available for families who may need care for children prior to school or after school. Please see attached OOSH brochure for service details.

Thank you for helping us all to ensure the safety of our students.

WHOOPING COUGH (PERTUSSIS) We have had a student here at EPS with a confirmed case of whooping cough. Please see the facts provided by NSW Health: Whooping cough affects people of all ages. It can be especially serious for babies. Vaccination reduces the risk of infection. What is whooping cough?

Whooping cough can be a life threatening infection in babies. Whooping cough in babies can lead to apnoea (pauses in normal breathing), pneumonia, feeding problems and weight loss, seizures, brain damage and, in some cases, death. Older children and adults can get whooping cough too and pass it on to babies.

What are the symptoms? •Whooping cough usually begins like a cold with a blocked or runny nose, tiredness, mild fever and a cough. •The cough gets worse and severe bouts of uncontrollable coughing can develop. Coughing bouts can be followed by vomiting, choking or taking a big gasping breath which causes a "whooping" sound. The cough can last for many weeks and can be worse at night. •Some newborns may not cough at all but they can stop breathing and turn blue. Some babies have difficulties feeding and can choke or gag. •Older children and adults may just have a cough that lasts for many weeks. They may not have the whoop. How is it spread?

Whooping cough is spread when an infectious person coughs bacteria into the air which can be inhaled by people nearby. If they are not treated early, people with whooping cough are infectious in the first three weeks of their illness.

•Whooping cough spreads easily through families, childcare centres and at school. Who is at risk? •Anyone can get whooping cough. People living in the same household as someone with whooping cough are especially at risk. •Immunisation reduces the risk of infection but immunity fades over time. You can still get whooping cough even if you've been immunised. How is it prevented? Whooping cough vaccines provide good protection from infection but immunity fades which means that boosters are needed. For further information, please contact NSW Health. Have a safe and happy week everyone and remember –

“All kids are gifted. Some just open their packages earlier than others.” --

April 12, 2013 EDGEWORTH PUBLIC SCHOOL ANZAC CEREMONY This is an Aleppo pine and many of these trees grew on the hillside at Gallipoli. The soldiers used their branches to give them shelter in the trenches, leaving only one pine standing. The ridge became known as Lone Pine. A young soldier, whose brother was killed on this hill on August 6, 1915, sent a pine cone home to their mother in Inverell as a sad reminder of her youngest son. The mother grew 3 saplings from its seeds, two of which survived. She took the little trees with her when she moved to Cardiff and nurtured them till they were ready to be planted in memory of those who died at the Battle of Lone Pine. One was planted in Inverell Park and the other was planted by the Duke of Gloucester in the grounds of the newly opened Australian War Memorial in Canberra in October 1934. This tree survives to this day and its seeds are harvested and grown at Yarralumla Nursery in Canberra. So the sapling that Tamika Nicholson and Jayden Rae planted in our playground is the grandchild of that original Lone Pine at Gallipoli. It too will stand as a living reminder to students of Edgeworth Public

Hunter Rugby 7s Finals On Tuesday May 7, the Edgeworth PS 7s Rugby team travelled to the renowned Number 2 Sports Ground to compete in the Hunter

Finals of the NSW Primary Rugby 7s, looking to win the competition for the third consecutive year since the competition was first

played after winning the Hunter division in 2011 and 2012. As defending champions the team was given the number 1 seeding and

were placed in Pool C.

The boys opened their day against Holy Family Merewether and gradually warmed to the task, running in 4 tries to win 20-5, with

Noah, Kai and Jake scoring tries, as well as Josh, who scored his first ever try in football. The boys then met Soldiers Point PS in their

second pool match, and stepped up a gear to score an impressive 9 tries in just 14 minutes to run out winners 45-5. Sam, Kai and Jake

all grabbed 2 tries each, while Byron, Nathan and Noah also scored tries.

The result saw Edgeworth top their pool, and they were placed in the Cup division of the draw along with Hunter Valley Grammar

and St Theresa’s, with the winner to go on to the State carnival. The boys had high hopes of reaching the State carnival for the third

time and were full of confidence heading into the finals. The boys first Cup match was against Hunter Valley Grammar, who had

looked equally impressive throughout the day. HVGS scored two early tries before a superb individual effort from Kai saw

Edgeworth trail 10-5 at halftime. Edgeworth dominated the early play in the second half, with Sam, Jake, Byron and James all going

agonisingly close to scoring. However a try against the run of play to HVGS killed off the boys hopes, and they eventually went down

25-5. The boys finished the day against St Theresa’s, and inspired by some massive runs from Noah, James scored 2 tries and Noah

one, as Edgeworth were denied victory by a controversial refereeing decision, with the score finishing in a 15-15 draw.

Despite feeling disappointed in not winning the competition, the boys were very proud of finishing runners up, with their efforts

dually acknowledged by the competitions organisers. The boy’s rugby play continues to go from strength to strength, and the efforts

and sportsmanship, both in victory and defeat, was wonderful.

Thank you to all the parents who came to support the boys, and to Sam’s mum (photographer) and Byron’s dad (water). The team has

a few big weeks coming up with State Knockout Rugby Union and Rugby League, as well Knights Knockout Rugby League. If the

boys continue to train and play with the same commitment, determination and skill, they should do well in all of these tournaments.

Team- Sam Smith, Kai West, Jake Chapple, James Leon, Byron Bruce, Noah Pheto, Josh Whitehead, Broden Bailey, Nathan Hillier,

Jimmy Jarvis and Andrew Jarvis.

NSWPSSA Netball Knockout

On Thursday 9 May the senior netball team played their first game in the NSWPSSA Netball knockout

competition. They played against Hamilton South Public School at our school. Unfortunately our girls were

knocked out as they were defeated 28-0 to a highly skilled opposition; however our girls gave 110% for the

entire game.

As their coach I was extremely proud of all of the girls as we had a few injuries and the majority of our team

haven’t played netball before. The girls have been very eager to learn about netball and ways to improve their

game; this was shown as the girls put the skills that they have been taught this term to good use in the game.

The girls have shown that they are positive and motivated to improve their skills in our PSSA competition that

starts this Friday.

I wish them all the best for our first PSSA game on Friday against Edgeworth Heights Public school and for the

rounds to follow and I’m sure that they have the support of the school community as well.
