At Claymore Public School we will always implement the advice provided. As you may have heard on the news, the government is using the term “social distancing” which means they are asking all citizens to avoid unnecessary contact. At Claymore PS this means (until further notice): Our morning assemblies, Friday afternoon assemblies, the end of term whole school assembly and the Easter Hat Parade will be cancelled The students will still receive their end of term certificates but these will be presented in the classrooms. The whole school photo & School Cross Country will be rescheduled Based on advice received, we are also asking people to refrain from handshakes and high-5s. People who are returning from overseas are required to self-isolate for 14 days. As always, if children are sick they should not attend school and visit a doctor. We will provide further updates as they become available. New Chaplain/Student Wellbeing Officer I would like to welcome Mr Jerome Nansen as our Chaplain/Student Wellbeing Officer this year (Mr Ron Fowell was in this position last year). Mr Nansen will be at Claymore PS each Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and will be working with the students in a social context. Swimming Success Two weeks ago students represented Claymore PS at the Zone Swimming Carnival - Olivia L, Ashton L, Brianna W and Sale S. All students represented our school beautifully and did an exceptional job with the highlight being Olivia placing third in the final of the 50m Freestyle event this meant Olivia represented the school and zone at the recent Regional Swimming Carnival. PSSA Gala Day Last Friday many of our primary students had the opportunity to participate in the PSSA Gala Day. Claymore entered teams in Oz Tag, cricket and t-ball. I had the opportunity to watch our Oz Tag teams play not only did they display skill on the field, they played in a sportsmanlike manner and were respectful throughout the day.

In classrooms

This fortnight I had the opportunity to witness our students being engaged with hands-on problem-solving activities in science. Some of our senior classes have been engineering and constructing their designs where part of the process was to “pay’ for their materials which enabled the students to understand the cost involved with construction. Some of our junior classes have been looking at the water cycle and were required to construct a method to obtain fresh water from salt water, where they were trying to capture the evaporated water.

Tremendous Community I would like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful parent community who are very supportive of the school and their child’s education. The Claymore community support the school in so many ways:

P&C leadership and participation

Attending Friday assemblies to support the students presenting and these receiving awards

Actively participating in parent/student/teacher meetings to discuss the educational journey of their child

Attending events such as Gala Day An Update on Heather and Victor Franchi Victor and Heather Franchi have decided to extend their leave for the rest of the year. We wish them all the best during this time. Attendance Most of us would be excited if we received 90% in an exam. However, did you realise that if you had a 90% attendance rate throughout your 13 years of schooling you would have missed one and a half years of schooling? This would have a massive impact on what you were able to learn at school. One day each fortnight would equate to a 90% attendance rate. Please encourage your child to be at school and only keep them home if they are genuinely sick.

P&C March Meeting Cancelled The P&C has decided not to hold its monthly meeting based on the advice regarding avoiding non-critical meetings. 2020 Tell Them From Me Survey (Years 4-6) We are delighted that this term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices. More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. More than 6,300 schools in Australia and around the world have used Tell Them From Me to survey 5.4 million students. Capturing the voices of our students will help improve how we do things at our school. We want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 23 March and 3 April. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary. A consent form and FAQs for parents/carers about the survey was recently sent home with students. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the form to school by Friday 20 March. Copies of the form and FAQs are available from: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents. The consent form and FAQs are available in 23 languages.

Article I. NSW School Updates app The NSW School Updates app allows parents and carers to receive operational status updates for NSW public schools. NSW families can now get notified when their school becomes non-operational, wherever they are. The app will complement the other means of communication available to parents and carers from schools and the Department of Education to ensure families receive timely, accurate information in a crisis. The app is free and available now for iOS and Android users.

Download for iOS - App Store Download for Android - Google Play

You can opt in for notifications about the operational status of as many NSW public schools as you choose.

Privacy information: The app does not store any personal or identifiable information. When using the app, it communicates with the department's servers storing a unique identifier for your device; the schools that you wish to receive updates for; and if you've opted into receive push notifications information to send notifications to that device.

Students with Health Care Needs: At Claymore PS we are committed to the health, welfare and safety of our students. To meet this commitment we are required to have an updated Health Care Plan for all students with the following health conditions:

Anaphylaxis

Diabetes

Epilepsy

Severe Asthma We ask that parents/carers let us know if their child is diagnosed with any of these, or any other serious medical conditions, and that the school is updated whenever treatment details change. We are required to have all Health Care Plans signed by parents/carers to ensure that symptom and treatment details are correct, and also ask that parents/carers obtain a doctor’s signature on plans, to confirm their accuracy, wherever possible. Please note: If parents wish to allow their child to carry medications such as an asthma reliever or Epipen in their school bag, a parent consent note is required. This note can be obtained from the school office. It is also a requirement that parents of students with anaphylaxis supply the school with an Epipen that is within its expiry date. If you wish to discuss Health Care Plan procedures, or need to check and sign your child’s current plan, please contact Mrs Miezio as soon as possible.
