我必须承认这一点：我着实讨厌阴冷，暗淡的寒冬。每当我想到暴风雪过后满街的泥泞雪水，那点点飘落的雪花对我而言就跟浪漫之类的词语再也扯不上边儿了。而每当我在出席活动的时候被深受咳嗽折磨的“地狱天使”重重包围的时候，那来自壁炉的噼里啪啦的，温暖悦耳的烤火声也会在瞬间变得毫无吸引力。我仅有的一次踏上滑雪道是和我当时的挪威男友——当他在雪坡上像闪电般梭巡自如的时候，我心里唯一想着的事情是如何保护四肢(才能继续学舞)，以及度假酒店里的按摩浴缸。

虽然洛杉矶和拉斯维加斯的冬天都很寒冷，但此时也是我们能从一年中的忙乱俗事抽出身来，陪陪家人和朋友的好时机。华灯初上之时，节日的彩灯也开始影影绰绰地重新勾勒了出街道和商店的轮廓。此时我们正好可以静下心来，对接下来几年中将面临的机遇和挑战作些梦想规划。

事实上，我想的并不是立志新年新愿的问题。我们《约》杂志（《洛》的姐妹杂志）刊登的“《约》杂志最具影响力100华人”名人档案展示了成功的不变定律——在挑战和困难面前不惧艰险，奋力前进（以及传播力量）。作为生活的学生，我们每一次面临和处理困境其实都是最宝贵的人生财富。

回顾龙年，我在纽约时装周之际为《新浪时尚》制作了一系列的视频采访。并且，我也会在本期杂志中跟读者们分享一些来自《裘蒂纽约时装周日记》的图片。时装周过去六周之后，飓风桑迪席卷纽约，这座城市经历了一段极为艰难的日子。因为卡内基音乐厅的暂时关闭，我们的朋友郎朗不得不重新延期举行他为“郎朗国际音乐基金会”而专门举办的演奏会（我是该基金的全球荣誉大使）。当我因自己居住的曼哈顿翠贝卡社区断电五天而深感不便之时，有人在此之间甚至失去了宝贵的生命。此外，对于许多艺术家来说，许多凝聚了他们多年心血的作品也在飓风来袭的时候毁于一旦。这些损失和灾难迫使我们重新连结起来并重新思考“礼物”这个词的真正含义。我们希望通过给读者们提供全方位的礼物购置建议，使大家的蛇年购物计划能更

十月的时候我参加了“葛蕾丝凯莉公主基金会”一年一度的颁奖盛会。在会上我和摩纳哥王子阿尔贝二世进行了深入的谈话。他告诉我他每年要来纽约三次。他不摆架子（即美式俗语里的“平易近人”）让我大感意外和惊喜。当我赞叹到他虽然生长在欧洲，但美式英语运用的极为纯熟优美的时侯，他跟我解释说他不但大学是在美国阿默斯特学院就读，且母亲是纯正的美国人。阿尔贝王子继承了他母亲支持艺术产业（包括了剧场，舞蹈，和电影领域）的承传，及地道的母语，仿佛对我们说：散慢不能成就美好的生命。

I HAVE A CONFESSION TO MAKE: I hate brutal, bleak wintry weather. Snowfl akes are by no means romantic to me when I think about the slushy muddy water in the aftermath of an icy storm. The cracking, toasty sound of a warm fi replace loses its allure as soon as I walk into an event surrounded by an inferno of coughing angels. The only time that I made it to a ski slope was with my then boyfriend from Norway. While he was cruising like a lightning rod, all I could think of was preserving my limbs for my dance lessons and the Jacuzzi at the ski resort.

Although Los Angeles and Vegas are spared of freezing tempera-tures, it is time to unwind from a year of fast and furious activities and to spend more time with friends and family. Holiday lighting re-silhouettes the streets and stores. A perfect time for dreaming about the possibilities for the coming years.

I am not talking about making a new round of New Year resolutions. Our profi les of the YUE (the sister magazine of LUO) Power 100 Most Infl uential Chinese and Chinese Americans attest to a common story of powering (and empowering) through challenging times and hardships. Dealing with setbacks is part of the luxury of being a student of life.

Looking back at the Year of the Dragon, I hosted a series of video presentations for SINA FASHION during the New York Fashion Week and I am happy to share with you some images from my Chiu-Ti’s New York Fashion Week Diary. Then six weeks later, Hurricane Sandy left New York with a trying time. Our friend Lang Lang had to reschedule the fi rst gala of his international music foundation (for which I have served as an International Honorary Ambassador) due to the closing of Carnegie Hall. While I was merely inconvenienced by the 5-day power outage in my Tribeca neighborhood, some people lost their precious lives and some artists lost years of creations. These losses forced us to reconnect and reconsider the meaning of “gifts.” We try to make your shopping for the Year of the Snake easier by offering you some all-around gifting ideas. Our spreads of cuff bracelets that would surely inspire Cleopatra and elegant Chinese New Year fashion that will carry you to Valentine’s Day are not about material accumulations; they are fantastic ways of expressing tastes and human connectivity.

Another way of dreaming for the future (and another great gift idea) is for the young Chinese to apply in the winter for the summer schools in the United States. As LUO continues to highlight higher education as one ultimate prestige and luxury, we have interviewed the senior admission offi cers at the top schools to unveil the mysteries of their application processes.

In October I attended Princess Grace Foundation’s annual award gala and had a long chat with Prince Albert of Monaco. He told me that he came to New York about three times a year. I was surprised how unassuming (or, in plain American English, “easy-going”) he was and made a comment that, despite his European upbringing, how beautiful his command of American English was. Prince Albert explained to me that he went to Amherst for college and reminded me that his mother was American. By living his mother’s legacy in sup-porting the arts (theater, dance and fi lm) that go beyond Hollywood and speaking his mother’s mother tongue perfectly, Prince Albert is telling us that a gifted life does not happen in slow motion.

At the invitation of SINA FASHION, I made a series of video presen-tations during the New York Fashion Week for Spring/Summer 2013 Collections for SINA’s three hundred sixty million registered users. Although watching fashion shows was more relaxing than having to produce and edit the video clips, I enjoyed taking the camera to backstage and chatting with designers and models. Chinese media’s heightened interest in the New York Fashion Week is a testament to the hunger for fashion knowledge among their viewers.

A GIRL IN A RED COAT DANGLES outside an apart-ment window ledge glaring into the playful bedroom scene between two lovers unfolding before her with gritted teeth as snowfl akes drift around her. In her rage, she loses her grip and falls. Getting up, the girl dusts off her pajama bottoms as she readies a snowball in her palm, she takes aim, suddenly her ex-fi ancé’s face appear in the window. A room of moviegoers in the Time Square, New York City theater collectively winces as she makes a hasty escape in large, cartoon-ish steps.

It is a Friday evening in October 2012, and the romantic comedy on screen is Sophie’s Revenge, a mainland Chinese fi lm being screened in celebration of the 3rd Annual New York Chinese Film Festival (NYCFF). The scene of a woman scorned is familiar to the genre, but the face of the eponymous heroine, Sophie, is not; it belongs to Ziyi Zhang. Ms. Zhang has one of Hollywood’s most recog-nized East Asian faces and is known the world over for her heartbreaking interpretations of damsels in period costume with a propensity for tragic endings. Those who have not seen Sophie’s Revenge will try to envision Jen Yu (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon), Xiao Mei (House of Flying Daggers), or Sayuri (Memoirs of a Geisha) hurl snowballs at an ex-lover in modern garb before failing — so complete and profound is Ms.Zhang’s delivery of her iconic characters.

这是去年十月份一个周五的夜晚，剧院上映的是一部第三届纽约中国电影节的参展作品，国产浪漫爱情喜剧《非常完美》（英文名《苏菲复仇记》）。失恋的女主角苏菲状况百出是此类影片中的常见情节，但苏菲的饰演者却从未出现于爱情喜剧片中，她就是华语影坛当家花旦章子怡。章子怡拥有在好莱坞甚至全球最为熟知的亚裔面孔之一，她的演技受无数国际奖项的肯定，她银幕上深入民心的形象多是以古装、年代装出现且又有令人心碎的悲情宿命。子怡对角色的倾注是如此的深刻，未看过现代时装喜剧《非常完美》的人是无法想象《卧虎藏龙》中英姿飒爽的玉娇龙，《十面埋伏》里清淡出尘的小妹，或《艺伎回忆录》中不畏压迫的小百合淘气地向前男友的窗户扔雪球解气那抹上喜剧色彩的身影。

Prior to the 2009 Chinese release of Sophie’s Revenge, the industry had its doubts about the project. It was unconvinced that Ziyi Zhang, who has known nothing in her decade-long career but serious fi lms, could carry a lighthearted romantic comedy. More incredulous was the idea that China’s most expensive actress would double on set as producer. Amidst the odds, she confi dently pushed her chips to the middle of the table, bringing in an A-list international cast of Fan Bingbing, Peter Ho and South Korea’s So Ji-sub and Hollywood caliber post-production. Ziyi Zhang was all in. The fi lm became a commercial success and pioneered the high budget Chinese contem-porary romantic comedy.

A day before the screening, Ziyi Zhang stood on stage at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall for the opening ceremony of the NYCFF and dissolved into giggles with the audience, who were amused that she had inadvertently rendered the gentleman next to her redun-dant — he was the evening’s translator. While introducing the two

films she was presenting at the festival, she switched so casually between English and Chinese that when it was the translator’s turn to speak, the audience of film luminaries couldn’t help but laugh as he tried not to repeat exactly what she said. “We are doing a live-skit”, Ms. Zhang offered in a show of perfect comedic timing. The press went wild the next day with headlines like ZIYI ZHANG SHOWS OFF ENGLISH IN NEW YORK and ZIYI ZHANG DEMONSTRATES COMEDIC HOST SKILLS. When moments later, Sid Ganis, former President of the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences, presented her with the highest honor of the evening — “Outstanding Asian Artist Award”, she remained in the mood for humor. “Wow”, she says in English after accepting the award, “I better go home tomorrow and make more movies!”

In a private fan meeting later, she would divulge that “Sophie is more like me, although the public has always seen me in serious roles such as that of Shang Qinqin in Love for Life”, the second film she was

Smart faShion editorS often become tired of fashion and its fickleness. Yet a few styles at the women’s wear shows this past September and october created a sense of artistic excitement that is perfect for breathing some fresh air into one’s ward-robe. Each fashion capital had its star.

In Paris, Phoebe Philo for Céline envisioned a slouchy, deconstructed sort of minimalism with her black and white separates. Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton offered a taste of bright ‘60s pop that refer-enced the brand’s Damier print at Palais Royal, which certainly was a nice exclamation mark at the end of Paris fashion week. Calvin Klein Collection’s Francisco Costa closed out New York with an erotique, contemporary twist of ‘80s Madonna-esque bustier dresses and innovative mesh day-wear. Miuccia Prada’s quirky take on Japanese kimonos and the Harajuku girl thrilled some. Karl Lagerfeld and Silvia Venturini Fendi for Fendi collaborated on unique patchwork of fur and fabrics on exciting pieces that had been immaculately fused using a special saldatura process.

Naturally, spectacle was front and center on the catwalk for spring 2013: Karl Lagerfeld created a runway constructed of solar panels for Chanel and the set boasted life-size wind tur-bines. Alexander Wang’s A-list set of models closed the show with a subcollection of his sliced and spliced ready-to-wear that glowed in the dark. Hedi Slimane presented a very Los Angeles-Bohemian first collection for the re-branded house of Saint Laurent to much fanfare—love it or hate it. Newly-appointed Christian Dior Couture creative director Raf Simons scaled back the stuffiness of the label with a more modernised ver-sion of glamour constructed in opulent materials. For this issue, we have curated a select assortment of trends from our favorite collections that are perfect for that warm winter escape or your closet’s progression into spring.

but this season boasted some absolutely romantic options. Labels such as a Etro, Bottega Veneta, Gucci and Kenzo

referenced lush, fl owering gardens in their collections. Many seemed to evoke the verdant gardens of Impressionistic paintings, like Monet’s gardens in Giverny and Cézanne’s Provençal works. Tomas Maier at Bottega Veneta whipped up dreamy dresses that delivered a contemporary reinven-tion to impressionism and fl oral patterns. Humberto Leon and Carol Lim for Kenzo jazzed up this fl oral theme with a saturated and jungle twist on a set of winning outfi ts that can take a jeune femme from March to August fl awlessly. Veronica Etro enhanced Gimmo Etro’s iconic paisley pat-terns with her own custom-made oriental fl oral prints that were either digitally stamped or hand painted on kimono

It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad WorldHorizontal, side to side, zig-zag, big and wide-

stripes were running wild on a bundle of runways from New York to Milan. Some looks lended them-selves to a ‘60s mod aesthetic such as Marc Jacob’s splashy collection line and Michael Kors, while others

were downright contemporary and chaotic (Moschino and Balmain). Dolce & Gabbana’s included its signa-ture Sicilian striped fanfare, displayed on a variety of dresses perfect for chic coastal gallivanting. For a bit more stately and classic approach, there was a halter dress from Oscar de la Renta.

The blessing of stripes are that they can help elon-gate or slim-out the body. Keep the look uniform or go for broke and clash your patterns all at once.

Billowy RufflesThere are two reasons for rejoicing at the overabundance

of ruffles on the runways this past fall: they’re forgiving for any figure and, if done well, they surely make for an elegant statement.

A bevy of luxury labels such as Lanvin, Saint Laurent and Alexis Mabille showed ruffles. In Paris, Riccardo Tisci went easy on his perennial dark romance with a softer femininity and turned to ruffles. Nicolas Ghesquière for Balenciaga, at what would be his

ultimate collection for the house, had a scattering of modern ruffle cuts as did Burberry’s Christopher Bailey, most notably on a series of peplum bottoms. Ralph Lauren’s matador-Hispanophile adven-

ture, which was presented the last day of fashion week in New York, incorporated dozens of ruffles and flow-

ing necklines that were simply breathtaking. For evening-wear, we suggest an enchanting floor-length, ruffled number.

MEN’S FASHION HAS NEVER BEEN MORE AUDACIOUS, more interest-ing and more accessible. Men dress to embody a message and magnifi cent craftsmanship should be an essential component of image projection. This attention to detail is at the core of this season’s shows.

Since the suit will always be the staple of a refi ned man’s wardrobe, other prominent brands such as Ralph Lauren’s Purple Label, Corneliani, Ermanno Scervino Canali and Salvatore Ferragamo are focusing on innovative fabrics and the very best Italian sartorie. Outside of Milan, luxury houses are of course competitive: Hermès, Kim Jones for Louis Vuitton and Kris Van Assche’s work for Dior Homme

all present interesting examples. Even in the U.S., labels Bespoken, Billy Reid and Thom Brown are spinning some of the most impressive suits in men’s wear today.

Even though the most memorable themes for spring 2013 had nothing to do with the suit, it must have been a reference point and foundation for structure. Riccardo Tisci’s laser-sharp silhouettes imprinted with images of la Madonna are sure to cause a sensation among the downtown set with money to burn. Lucas Ossendrijver’s contemporary collection for Lanvin Homme hovered around a rockstar’s fast lane life, but also incorporated a few fascinatingly dressier options. We investigate a few of these haphazard styles

that emblazoned the spring 2013 runways.

electric Hawai’i Five-oSpringtime is always ideal for busting out the flo-

ral wear and donning muted hues or retro cuts. This season, runways presented vintage Hawai’ian aesthetics or decadent tropical prints, as ideal for your next beach getaway in late winter or a springtime stroll on the High Line. Frida Giannini referenced that signature ‘70s and ‘80s Gucci silver screen glamor, but updated it with a slender, modern silhouette. Perhaps it was Mediterranean panache samples Pacific chic? Not far off, were Ermenegildo Zegna’s silk prints and sleeker, cooler suited looks. The waist was kept high, which gave it that vintage finish. Canali also pumped up the volume with daringly electric botanical evening jackets. Even Massimiliano Giornetti’s glaringly bright collection for Salvatore Ferragamo had an air of West Coast retro; albeit the materials seemed techno … Across the city, on Milan’s Via Veneto, Christopher Bailey presented an interesting clash of ‘70s electricity and techno metallics for Burberry Prorsum. Retro or futuristic—it’s your call.

With the designs of Brit Bill Gaytten, who has taken over the reigns at the John Galliano fashion house, it was all Surrealism fueled by floral explosion. Calvin Klein Collection’s head-to-toe denim was certainly a throwback. What fit the bill most with Italo Zuccelli’s collection were the American sportswear pieces festooned in clas-sic Hawai’ian prints that had been embossed or woven into a vari-ety of cotton and silk blends. The bathing suit of course is key when dressing for surf and sun and Dolce & Gabbana has just the solution: High-waisted Sicilian shorts and a thigh-high costume da bagno.

PATTERN OVERLOADKen Etro’s “Playsley” collection for his family’s house was

energetic and ornately delicious. The way he blended the brand’s iconic blossomy, paisley prints and vibrant colors with a sort of urban Jhakri-cum-Indian Brahmin, was the perfect recipe of visual spectacle, opulent fabrics and cultural risk that keeps fashion interesting.

Jean-Paul Gaultier successfully mixed his trademark Breton stripes and intricate marinière-inspired patterns on a variety of menswear options at his presentation. Zegna, Gucci, John Galliano, Kenzo and Comme des Garcçons all layered on the prints, patterns and color at their shows, sending a message of playful excess that was refreshingly vibrant and chaotic. Angela Missoni created a nice balance of sub-dued patterns binging with Sahara, azure and dessert green shades, which enabled bolder options to be layered on top. In paris. Play with patterns, fabrics and colors this season to build a visually dynamic outfi t that has just the right amount of out-of-control vitality.

runway in Milan. Cuts, incisions, perfora-tions and sheerness that resulted in

plenty of peek-a-boo moments, usu-ally reserved for women’s wear.

Corneliani and Giorgio Armani surprisingly both presented a few diaphanous and perforated tops in luxurious fabrics. A closer look at Salvatore Ferragamo’s sherbet-hued sweaters and knitwear revealed gauzy components that permitted various colors and patterns beneath to blend. In Paris,

Raf Simon’s men’s wear col-lection included a portion of

asymmetrical white tops with perforated triangles detailed

with an innovative version of Broderie Anglaise. This trend is a

provocative approach for the more progressive dresser.

何为“力量”？何为“影响力”？中国人和美国人对于“力量”

和“影响力”是否有不同的定义呢？

在我们的时代，每个人都更加试图影响他人，因此对于

这一问题的解读也就格外必要。随着社交媒体和公众知识体

系的日益发达，“影响力”也开始由微博、脸书和推特的关注

人数衡量——毕竟，“人气达人”正是随着社交媒体的兴起

而产生的新名词。任何一个人（不光是名人）的“人气排行”

都可以在每一个“喜欢”或“赞”以及每一个新“粉丝”和“

转发”中得到体现。

本期《洛》的一个关注焦点是《约》100位最具影响力华

人名单（《约》为《洛》的东岸姐妹刊）。作为一个关注中国、

展望世界的出版物，《洛》在此所庆祝的不仅是中华民族或

身份认同的概念。更重要的是，我们旨在表彰工商、金融、娱

乐、体育、科技、政治、慈善、艺术、设计和创意等行业中有

突出贡献的华裔人士，他们用自己的成就为群体服务，超越

单元文化的限制，并在多元文化体系中进行交流。名单上的百

位华人不仅具有影响力，更把他们的力量传递给他人。他们

是促进积极转变的使者。

当我们设立评选范围并且圈定可能候选人的时候，我们

的研究发现，在当代国际舞台，尤其是在美国，并没有一种完

善的体系来衡量华人和美籍华人的影响力。我们同时也发现

在美国的很多有实力的华人和美籍华人并没有得到与他们所

取得成就相衬的关注。也就是说，要定义在中国和美国都被

认可的具有影响力的华人实际是颇有挑战性。

朋友们，尽管《约》100位最具影响力华人名单在评选的

时候的确会参考类似于“粉丝”等可以计算的数据，但我可

以向你们保证，这一评选绝不是一个人气指数的竞赛，更不是

由赞助商的赞助费高低来衡量的。我们注意到，“声望”经常

与“名气”被混为一谈（温顿·马沙利斯不就把“名气”描述

为“假贵族”吗？）。《约》100强可能很高调或低调，但无论如

何，他们有的共通点是，对积极改变的使命：他们都决心让自

己和他人的生活变得更加美好。这样的决心，在今日全球经

济文化交汇的大潮中，在中美跨文化的环境中，显然是成功

的要素。这些最具影响力的华人之所以成为我们读者响往的

典范，主要的是因为他们不是照饼干模子刻出来的模式来追

寻成功的途径。他们超越了地理和专长的界限，打破了文化

的壁垒，自由地诠释着影响力的概念。

What is POWER? What is INFLUENCE? Do Chinese and Americans have different defi nitions of POWER and INFLUENCE?

This question gains new urgency in an era when everybody is, more than ever, trying to infl uence other people. With the growing dominance of social media and crowd-sourced knowledge, “infl uence” is often measured by the number of Weibo, Facebook and Twitter followers—after all, isn’t “infl uencer” a neologism that has gained currency with the rise of social media? Any person’s (not just celebrities’) “fame game” is purportedly measurable by every “like” or “dislike” and every new “fan” and “retweeted” posting.

One highlight of this issue of LUO is the YUE Power 100™ Most Infl uential Chinese and Chinese Americans List (YUE is LUO’s east coast sister publicatioon). As a publication that speaks with Chinese sensitivity and international outlook, LUO is not here to celebrate the Chinese ethnicity or identity per se. Rather, the Power 100 List recognizes the accomplishments of the 100 most fascinating people of Chinese descent in business, fi nance, entertainment, sports, science, policies, philanthropy, art, design and creative fi elds who embody, through their professional achievements and contributions to the community, the triumph over the idea of a singular culture and the beauty of negotiating multiple identities. The YUE Power 100 are not only powerful, but also empowering. They are the agents for positive change.

When we set out to establish the criteria for our selection and drew up a roster of potential candidates, our research showed that there had been a lack of a systematic way, particularly in the United States, to recognize the infl uence of Chinese and Chinese Americans Chiu-Ti Jansen, Publisher

on our contemporary global scene. We also found that the visibility of powerful Chinese and Chinese Americans in the United States is often not commensurate with their accomplishments. This means it is particularly challenging to identify powerful Chinese who are equally perceived as such in China and the United States.

My friends, while the YUE Power 100™ List certainly takes into account the power of infl uence as registered through measurable matrices such as the number of “fans,” I can assure you that it is not a popularity contest, nor is it measured by the dollar value of commercial endorsements. We are mindful that REPUTATION is often confused with FAME (didn’t Wynton Marsalis describe fame as a “false nobility”?). The YUE Power 100 may either be vocal or unassuming in their desire to exert their impact on the world, but they share the same attribute as agents of change: a determination to better themselves and other people’s lives. Such determination, manifested in a Sino-American cross-cultural context, is highly relevant to the mindset and skill sets required to succeed in today’s interconnected geo-economic and cultural world. These men and women inspire our readers mainly because they have not pursued their paths to success through a cookie-cutter format. They have broken the mold. By breaking cultural barriers, they translate power across geographical boundaries and career disciplines.

《约》100位最具影响力华人名单旨在表彰在商业、金融、娱乐、

体育、科技、政治、慈善、艺术、设计和创意领域最具影响力并做

出突出贡献的华人和美籍华人。

《约》100位最具影响力华人皆是各自领域里在中国和美国都

取得了成功的业界领袖，而他们也都为自己的华裔身份增光添彩。

这些被提名者不仅在自己的事业中达到了相当的顶峰，而且也通

过自己的影响力让这个世界更美好。他们促进了中美之间的文化

会教育启迪全世界的孩子，让他们更加热爱古典音乐；篮球运动

员姚明的姚明基金会帮助中国和美国的受灾地区进行学校的重

建；而影星李连杰则成为了国际红十字会的首任亲善大使。

王雪红（HTC集团主席和共同创建者，美国市场上最流行的

一些智能手机就是由该企业设计制造的），曹国伟（新浪首席执

行官，正在北美市场推广微博的使用），王健林（大连万达集团主

THE YUE POWER 100™ List honors the 100 most infl uential and fascinating Chinese and Chinese Americans in business, fi nance, entertainment, sports, science, policies, philanthropy, art, design and creative fi elds.

The YUE Power 100™ are accomplished Chinese or Chinese American leaders who have succeeded in their fi elds in both China and in United States and have demonstrated pride in their Chinese heritage. The honorees have not only reached great heights in their own careers but have also used their infl uence to change the world for the better. They have enhanced Chinese-American cultural interaction and have broken barriers for Chinese or Chinese Americans in their fi elds. They have also contributed to the wellbeing of communities in China, the United States and around the world.

They have made a far-reaching, positive impact on China and the United States, inspiring friendship and closer ties between the two societies. The most exceptional examples include Lang Lang, the piano prodigy whose Lang Lang International Music Foundation educates and inspires children worldwide to love classical music, Yao Ming, the basketball player whose Yao Ming Foundation has helped rebuild schools in disaster-struck areas in China and the US, and Jet Li, the movie star who is also the fi rst Goodwill Ambassador for the International Red Cross.

Wang Xuehong (cofounder and Chairman of the HTC Corporation, which designs and manufacturers some of the most popular smartphones in the US), Charles Chao (CEO of Sina Weibo, who promotes the use of Weibo in North America), and Wang Jianlin (Chairman of the Dalian Wanda Group, which just bought the AMC theater chain) have drawn attention to, and contributed to, China’s increasing infl uence on Sino-American economic relations. Our list also includes two fashion models who have broken ground for Chinese women in fashion (Liu Wen and Du Juan), the fi rst Chinese American to play in the NBA ( Jeremy Lin), and an opera singer who is promoting the use of Chinese as a language of Western-style opera (Hao Jiang Tian). They are living proof of the contributions of Chinese and Chinese Americans to American diversity and Chinese infl uence.

It would take a lifetime to learn about all of the infl uences that the Chinese and Chinese American people have had on the world. The YUE Power 100™ is our fi rst attempt to recognize the fascinatingly diverse impacts these 100 individuals have made on our beautiful world.

Programs like these are very attractive to Chinese families. For the past few decades, China has become more involved in the global market. As a result, English takes a more and more important role in today’s China. Attending summer programs and learning English are an ideal choice for many Chinese families now. CNBC points out that sending children to attend summer programs in the U.S. is one of the top 10 growing trends for Chinese consumers in recent years.

Attending summer programs helps Chinese teenagers to be famil-iar with American culture and college life as well. A Chinese mom, Lou Yong, who sent her son to the U.S. during summer break said American summer programs “are a good complement to Chinese-style education. Chinese-style education focuses on academic achievement, while American-style [programs] allow the students to improve their overall abilities. If the child wants to study abroad in

the future, an American program can help them make some adjustments beforehand.” Many sum-mer programs at American universities prepare students with a series of fun activities, sports, and classes that require critical thinking. The director of American Chinese Civic Exchange (ACCE), Jian Zhu, said that the Chinese students who attended summer programs were “totally immersed in a new experience every day, like play-ing soccer, eating American food, seeing farms and hospitals … lots of big things that give them differ-ent experiences.” For Chinese families who want to send their children to study abroad in the future, a summer program is defi nitely a good start.

Last but not least, students will realize that the experience of attending summer program is a big bonus when they start to apply to American uni-versities. Yale Daily News, a newspaper published by Yale University, claims that “students who enroll

In addition, if students perform well in the summer classes, they can request recommendation letters from the professors when they apply to the colleges. The recommendation letters that are written by the professors from Ivy League are extremely valuable in the col-lege application process. In other words, students can build up their own network at America universities before they actually enroll in an undergraduate program.

Overall, attending summer programs at American universities is a fun and challenging experience for Chinese teenagers. It helps to build a strong foundation for the students’ future success. In the remainder of this article, LUO will introduce you to some of the most famous programs that are provided by the prestigious institutions in the U.S. West Coast.

University of California-Berkeley offers an English Language Studies program for international students during summer break. This program contains four sessions:

➤ ESL 8: focuses on all English language skills: reading, writing, lis-tening, and speaking.

➤ ESL 9: offers more specialized instruction, with classes including business English, academic writing, academic research, oral pre-sentation, and more.

➤ ESL W9: is an online course that offers interaction with instructors and students from around the world. This course also offers differ-ent topic areas to suit your interests and needs.

➤ ESL 7: focuses on high-interest American studies topics, such as immigration, art, literature and sports, to help students improve their listening and note-taking skills.

Each of the above sessions lasts 3-6 weeks and students can take one or all of them. The sessions not only help students learn English, but also improve their “academic excellence, creativity, and inno-vative thinking.” For young Chinese students who want to study at American universities in the near future, the ELS (English Language Studies) program provided by UC-Berkeley can defi nitely help them to adapt to the academic life beforehand.

Stanford University, on the other hand, offers a less intensive academic program when compared with UC-Berkeley. Their eight-week-long summer course focuses on English language training. Stanford divides the course into four sections, which are “Pronunciation, Reading and Vocabulary, Oral Communication and Written Communication.” Each of these sections meets for two hours a week. As a result, students can have plenty of time to experience life outside of the classroom. They can go to lectures and presenta-tions, participate different campus events, or just hang out with local students. In short, for Chinese kids who want to spend more time

exploring American culture and society, Stanford University will be a very good choice.

As Alex Abraham, the general manager of Blue Sky Study, a Shanghai-based overseas education consultancy said: “For parents who would one day like their child to study in the US full-time … a (summer program) is a great way to introduce a foreign country to a young student.” Many American universities, such as UC-Berkeley and Stanford are now offering high quality pro-grams for Chinese students. These programs not only enhance students’ English abilities, but also ensure them a better and brighter future in the global marketplace.Without doubt, attending summer programs at America’s top universities is a smart choice for Chinese families.

From the Beverly Wilshire-Four Seasons to The Huntington’s verdant Rose Garden Tea Room in San Marino, a bevy of delightful destinations serve as perfect introductions to tea for new guests or a habitual essential for the old guard.

“We have the most wonderful tea sandwiches, traditional in their inspiration and modern in interpretation.
