The partnership with the most disadvantaged people is a matter of justice and dignity, not assistance and generosity

The World Day to Overcome Extreme Poverty is celebrated on 17th of October every year in more than one hundred countries around the world. It took place for the first time in 1987: over one hundred thousand people gathered in Paris where the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was signed, around the stone where is engraved the sentence you can read on our banners:

"Wherever men and women are condemned to live in extreme poverty, human rights are violated.

To come together to ensure that these rights be respected is our solemn duty."

This first celebration was at the initiative of the ATD Fourth World International Movement. Since 1992, October 17th is recognised by the United Nations Organisation and is defined in a Report of the UN Secretary-General by these words:

The World Day to Overcome Extreme Poverty “represents an opportunity to acknowledge the efforts and struggles of people living in poverty, a chance for them to make their concerns heard and a moment to recognise that poor people are in the forefront in the fight against poverty. The participation of the poor themselves has been

at the centre of the international day celebrations since its very beginning.”

The partnership with the most disadvantaged people is a matter of justice and dignity, not assistance and generosity.

Each October 17th celebration around the world must therefore create an original space where people from different backgrounds can gather together in respect for their diversity, join efforts, learn from one another and build peace.

What is a community workshop?

This year we celebrate the World Day to Overcome Extreme Poverty not only through this small gathering with testimonies, poems, dramas, etc. We also celebrate it through action, organising a community workshop in which some of you already participated yesterday and today. What is a community workshop? There is a short explanation in the latest ATD Newsletter and we are going to read some excerpts.

A community workshop means a day in which all the members of the community are invited to participate: all the members means not only the most dynamic and the most skilled, all the members means also those usually excluded, the handicapped people, those who are not recognised by the community as being part of it... This is not easy to do...

Sometimes when a community project starts, the poorest people don't come, don't participate. They are probably the most concerned, but they think, “I don't have any idea to give, the others are going to make fun of me, to criticise me”. One day a father told one of us, “I'm never associated to this kind of work. Nobody comes up to my home in order to ask me for my help. That is why I don't participate”.

All of us are very different, some are strong and others are weaker, some are good at doing manual work and others at telling stories... But we are equal in the face of human rights which have to be respected for everybody. We are equal in dignity, because we are women and men, whatever our

abilities and skills are, even for those of us who have been damaged by a hard life.

Whatever we are doing, does it allow the community to recognise the equal dignity of the poorest of its members?

In some cases, a community workshop is organised to bring a benefit to all the members of the community. However, many people accept to mobilise themselves in order to support, for example their neighbours who are in great difficulties. “It is normal to give priority to the poorest. We did it when the wall of our neighbours' house collapsed after very big rains. We asked friends, people living in the same area and we shared the work with the spirit to help one another. The wall was very quickly rebuilt and everybody was very happy, both the people living in the house and all the participants in the rebuilding.”

In the past we helped each other to farm(Testimony from Bibi Jamali)

I am Bibi Jamali and I am living here at Kisanga. My parents were farmers, they didn't send me to school, but they taught me how to farm.

Some of my children passed away, leaving their own children. So I started to care for them, six grand children are now living with me in my only room. What else was possible? I could not abandon them! To care for them is my commitment. From time to time some people ask me "Why don't you put some of your grand children in an orphanage?" But I am strong and in good health, it is normal to care for them because I am able to do it. Nowadays many people are not ready to care for the orphans even in their own family and find an excuse: finally the children feel rejected and sometimes finish in the street.

I have to get money in order to be able to feed all of them, even though my sons help me when they can do it. I never imagined that I could beg and earn money without working. I work at the quarry of Kunduchi where I break stones. It is far, but I don't have any other solution. In the past I worked at the quarry of Boko but it was further and harder. In our area I think that I am the only person who works at the quarry of Kundunchi. As well I farm in a field I rent at Ruvu close to Bagamoyo. When I come back from there, I give some vegetables to my neighbours. And sometimes they share flour or sugar with me. I participate in our community as everybody: if there is a funeral or other event, I contribute by giving sugar or other thing. Even though I am poor, I am able to share what I get with my neighbours and I am happy

Sinabudi kutafuta pesa kuwalisha wote, japokuwa watoto wanga hunisaidi pale wawezapo.

with that.

I am strong enough to work in order to allow my grand children to eat. I am proud of my strength. Sometimes people are laughing of me because I rise so many grand children, but I am proud of what I do and I am encouraged by these responsibilities I was given.

Some neighbours were ready to help me for the building of this second room and at the same time they didn't believe that we would be able to go until the end. Some of them reminded me that in the past we were used to helping each other to farm when one was ill for example. It is really important for me to feel that we can do something all together.

ninafuraha kwa hilo.

Ninanguvu za kutosha kufanyakazi kuwawezesha wajukuu zangu kula. Najivunia nguvu zangu.

Community action in Bangui

“Kokoro Boeing in Bangui (RCA) is a very poor neighbourhood: no drinking water, no electricity, no suitable ways for vehicles... Every year from May, when the raining season comes back, the neighbourhood is regularly flooded and some houses collapse. This permanent wetness causes the development of the mosquitoes and of malaria.

After a campaign raising awareness for health, some mamas of the neighbourhood had the idea of cleaning the draining channels and they mobilised their husbands and their sons. Everybody was invited to bring his or her contribution, through money or tools, in order to support the work. This work was a success because very different people agreed to come together: parents, young people and even the city and neighbourhood leaders who encouraged this project. This work together brought improvement for health of all the families and concerned everybody.

The cleaning of several kilometres of channels avoided future floods. It needed a long time for starting the project, but it represents now a positive experience about what is possible through the unity of everybody.”

It would not be very fair not to support the others(Testimony from Hassan Abeid and Hashim)

Hassan and Hashim are both Fishmarket workers.

They explain why they are touched by the situation of this grandmother. For them it is completely abnormal to live with six children in the same room. Hassan Abeid said: “Even in the village, we were able to separate boys, girls and parents. Sometimes it was through non permanent houses, but we could manage.” Both think that it is dangerous to live in an overcrowded house, because of the illnesses but also for other reasons. If this Bibi is obliged to live in such conditions, it means that her life is very tough.

Hashim said: ”I was myself supported very much by different people in my life. Today it would not be very fair not to support the others. I cannot explain why I am ready to commit myself, it is just like that.

Hassan was one of the learners in the first literacy class at the Fishmarket. He knows now how to read and write and he was an active supporter in the next literacy classes. For some months he is part of the birth registration project, because he would like to get a birth certificate for his child. He considers himself as an ATD member who feels responsible to commit with ATD.

My life was hard, my life is still hard, but I am happy with my life(Testimony from Selemani Y Kondo)

My name is Selemani and I work at the Fishmarket of Dar es Salaam. Some days ago I was asked to take part in this community workshop. I agreed immediately, even before knowing for which kind of workshop. Why did I agree? Because I am a human being and I was asked to support another human being. That's all!

I am ready to commit myself in order to ensure human rights be respected. Housing, health, education and some other rights are very important. When I learnt that this grandmother was living in these conditions, I thought that it was unacceptable. Personally I would not be able to live in a so overcrowded room. But which other alternative for her, unless we come together and we support her?

I already participated in October 17th celebration last year. It was a very good day, allowing us to share and to discuss together. It is possible to come together in different ways, even through the physical work of this year.

My life was hard, my life is still hard, but I am happy with my life.

Testimony from the fishermen and small-scale traders of the Magogoni Fishmarket

In collaboration with other volunteers worldwide in celebrating this day, we, the stakeholders of the Fishmarket, are against extreme poverty, brought about by unnecessary reasons.

It hurts us on seeing and hearing about those who suffer from living in poverty in their own countries with the ressources they have, simply beause they lack unity, cooperation, solidarity and true love in helping the disadvantaged. The ATD Fourth World Movement has helped us build awareness and start cooperating with them in helping others through the Literacy Program at the Fishmarket. Now, let us, the weak, unite against every reason that leads to unnecessary poverty.

Because:

« Whenever men and women are condemned to live in poverty human rights are violated!! »

It is the right time to stand strong and to make a step with love to help others who are poor. To refute private gain for immoral leaders who should protect our rights, leadership and our ressources anywhere in the world.

The world is one nation and people in it are all friends of ATD Fourth World.

Umaskini daima, usiweke matabaka(Mtunzi, Phebiness Peter Mwailenge)

Poverty should never create classes(Poem written by Phebiness Peter Mwailenge)

Greetings are something important in our daily life,so every human gets our greetings, it's not something that rarely comes from our mouths,Poverty should never create classes

Classes should never result from poverty,we need the rich ones to cooperate well, poverty is not shameful, realise it now,Poverty should never create classes

The aim is not to give out money, but to share ideas, facing with determination the other's problems, regardless of politics or qualifications,Poverty should never create classes

Help colleagues who failed to come, poor minded, they have been overwhelmed, care about their pain when it's increasing fast,Poverty should never create classes

When this day reaches, let's join in peace, let's pray to God without rancour in our hearts, put aside the imperfections when we rise together,Poverty should never create classes

Let's avoid violence, a source of poverty, neighbours and brothers, let's love one another in peace, let's not cause bitterness in towns and villages,Poverty should never create classes

Salamu kitu muhimu, katika maisha yetu,Yani kila mwanadamu, hupata salamu yetu, Wala si kitu adimu, kutoka vinywani mwetu,Umaskini daima, usiweke matabaka

Usiweke matabaka umaskini daima,Matajiri twawataka, tushirikiane vema,Umaskini sitaka, litambueni mapemaUmaskini daima, usiweke matabaka

This message should reach the palace and parliament, everybody should agree to it, counsellor or president, and our brothers, members of parliament, open their eyes to it,Poverty should never create classes

The ministers, don't close your eyes on it,prick up your ears, listen carefully, save it in your heart and then work on it,Poverty should never create classes

Here's the last verse, we can't continue,we've given you a message, it has reached you,it shouldn't end here, bring it to every corner,Poverty should never create classes

Ujumbe wetu ugonge, ikulu hadi bungeni,Kila mtu asipinge, rais hata diwani,Na ndugu zetu wabunge, macho lifumbulieni,Umaskini daima, usiweke matabaka

Mawaziri tazameni, macho msilifumbie,Masikio yategeni, kwa makini msikie,Kichwani yahifadhini, kazi mkayafanyie,Umaskini daima, usiweke matabaka

Beti ya mwisho ni hapa, hatuwezi endelea, ujumbe tumeshawapa, umekwisha wafikia, usije ishia hapa, kila kona pelekea,Umaskini daima, usiweke matabaka

Umaskini uliokithiri upo katika nchi tajiri(Ushuhuda kutoka Ireland)

Extreme poverty exists as well in rich countries(Testimonies from Ireland)

As you know extreme poverty exists in rich countries as well as in poor countries. In spite of their economical development, the rich countries continue to exclude some of their members: homeless, jobless, illiterate people, drug users, etc.

Today we would like to bring you some testimonies collected among extremely poor people living in Ireland, a European country.

First Ann-Marie explained how painful it is to be permanently criticised and judged by the people around her:

“What helps me the most is meeting people who don’t judge me, people with who I don’t have to wear a mask, people who have a positive outlook and believe in me.”

Dean and his wife live in the streets of Dublin, the capital of Ireland. Their hope is in a better future for their daughter who is now living in a children's centre.

“I am 28 years old. I have been homeless for 8-9 years. Each night I had to find a place where I could sleep. (…) With my wife our dream is that one day our daughter will be able to go to college, something that we never did.

We hope that she will get her own house and will never be homeless.”

Jane told us her daughter's story, who finds her strength through the responsibility of caring for her

5 children. It can remind us what Bibi Jamali said before.

“I would like to bear witness to my sister Ana. Her youngest one was still a baby when her partner died and she raised five children on her own.

During many years she struggled against poverty and drug addiction and life was tough on her.

I and my partner stayed with her for a while. We were homeless and, in our own ways, we were helping each other the best we could.

What kept her going was her children. She loves them and they were a source of strength for her. Because they stayed with her, she never stopped fighting.”

kama Bibi Jamali alivyotuambia.

Nitapenda kushuhudia dada yangu Ana.

Dare to reach out to others in ways that will renew our energy, courage and ambitions(Message from Eugen Brand, ATD Director General)

Eugen Brand, Director General of ATD Fourth World, begins his message for October 17th, 2011 with these words: "New walls have been going up around the world. Some are cement walls that make it almost impossible for people to move and to get to know one another." Many obstacles separate people coming from different social or cultural backgrounds and "make it impossible for people to develop the mutual respect needed in order to work toward solutions together.""And yet, faced with these formidable obstacles," some people "open doors, they invite others to gatherings for celebrations where each person is considered worth getting to know, with no one imposing a single way of living or a set of convictions." (…) "Where can we find the energy to build a community where the desire to live together in peace can be stronger than the fear of the “other,” stronger than suspicion of those who live differently, stronger than even the exclusion of those who have no choice but to survive?(…) Day after day, our goal is to build a new shared history: one that is free from false security and one where knowledge, learning and power are no longer the private property of some; but one where those who bear the worst of every crisis are the first to inspire the way forward.(…) This October 17th may we dare to reach out to others in ways that will renew our energy, courage and ambitions."

Conclusion

When we are united and taking action together, we are strong enough to change the world

The celebration of the World Day to Overcome Extreme Poverty is almost over. During this day we heard testimonies from Tanzanian people and Irish people. Even though Ireland is a rich country where almost everybody has work, a decent place to live, knows how to read and write, etc, some people are excluded from the rights every person is entitled to and live in extreme poverty. It is the same in all the rich countries such as France, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, the United States of America, etc.

It is important that the people of Tanzania are involved in the struggle against poverty. In the future, many Tanzanians may have a better quality of life, but it will not change the fact that there will be some people that will still live in extreme poverty, unless we are willing today to change the relationships we have with the poorest members of our communities.

Today we are together in order to remind us, when we are united and taking action together, we are strong enough to change the world. Most of you are coming from far, Phebiness came from Mbagala, and other people came from Tandale. For everybody, even for people living in and close to Kisanga, the participation in this community workshop and this celebration requested a big effort because nobody receives anything by coming here. More precisely, nobody receives any money, but everybody can gain

in courage and strength. We know that we are not alone; other people are committed in their neighbourhoods, in Dar es Salaam, in Tanzania and also in many other countries. We know that we are able to succeed through our unity. We know that when united it is not possible to leave anybody on the side on our journey.

Through the commitment we show to each other on this and every other day throughout the year, we work in order to improve humanity, the relationships between people, the respect and the dignity of everybody, and especially of the most disregarded people in the community. We don't work for allowing everybody to access all the products of modern day life. Modern day life is nice as long as it is not at the expense of a bigger gap between the richest and the poorest people. The Tanzanian people, supported by many NGOs, are trying to increase the infrastructure, health, education, etc., of the country.

This work is useful, but it is not enough. In order to create long lasting change we must act together in the way we have done here today. Together we are committed in this very ambitious vision of changing humanity, creating peace through justice and recognising the dignity of all. Today we have demonstrated that through the unity and commitment of people, and the work we have achieved, this vision can become a reality.
