The pronounced “king” of Tianjin Street Markets is DaHuTong(大胡同)-the giant crowded shopping area situated in HongQiao District, relatively close to Aqua City. Don’t be scared of its far-off location as every taxi driver is quite familiar with the place, and you won’t have any problems with getting there. Aside from cheap clothes and shoes, you will find yourself in a paradise of products for home, furniture, accessories, interior items and a potpourri of other bits and pieces. It is a perfect place for buying minor household items and materials when you’ve just moved, stocking up with useful “junk”(like iPhone cases) and, of course, for finally getting something you wanted,

China’s production ability i s w e l l - k n o w n - h e r e absolutely anything of any

purpose, shape, colour and size can be bought for a song. Expats, after leaving their countries with good-quality products at “biting” prices, feel themselves pleasantly amazed by this “horn of plenty”. Who needs big brands when you can stock up with clothes for almost nothing? Or, for instance, why to go IKEA or (God forbid!) brandy furniture store if you can get it Chinese-made?

For all these reasons (good price, variety and fun) it is good to know about useful “goods jungles” - flea markets.

but never dared to waste money on (crazy Halloween costumes, animal-printed wine glasses, biker helmets, etc.) In fact, the biggest Flea Market in Tianjin started from one single street - GuYi Street(估衣街). People all over the city would go there to buy second-hand or old clothes. However, in 1920, the place had reached its peak - fur, silk and velvet industries replaced single retailers. By that time, 8 of 12 the most famous silk warehouses were based there. Step by step, shopping spread around, creating an enormous “city within the city”. Now, visitors still can find good Chinese silk and satin as well as traditional leather goods.

and flowers. The place, containing mi l l ions of var ious t ypes of them, is called Cao Zhuangzi Flower Market(曹庄花卉场) and is situated in XiQing District. Aside for buying things there, you can also visit the market as a botanic garden and enjoy. From traditional roses to 30-year-old bonsai trees, shopping for flowers in the Flower Market can turn out to be very pleasant surprise, as the prices are truly low. So, why not to indulge yourself by getting some of those gorgeous plants?

Flea markets are one of the name cards of China. And, even if to buy something there seems to be a risky affair, it is worth visiting just to see what the Chinese-made horn of plenty looks like.

Taobao - 6 letters, 2 characters, plenty of meaning. The majority of expats have already discovered this Chinese giant of e-commerce. Nowadays, you can enjoy painless and relaxing shopping without leaving your cosy apartment. However, what a pity, you need to wait for your parcel to arrive (usually it takes 3 days), and that’s certainly a disadvantage. For those in a hurry, look no further than Tianjin Taobao Market! The markets location is not convenient for many people - Jintang Street (津塘路) in DongLi District - but Metro Line 9 can take you straight up there. Just like its internet namesake, Taobao Street offers plenty! It’s especially attractive for ladies as for its wide range and variety of clothes and accessories. Brace yourself since you can waste a lot of money buying simply too many cheap things. Among locals, Taobao Street is a well-known place for purchasing replicas of famous brands.

If you are looking for something more interesting and Chinese-like, just take several turns from BingJiangDao - Antiques Street

Market of

T i a n j i n ( 沈 阳 道古 物 市 场 ) . Located in the heart of commercial Heping District, it is a real amusement. Contrasting with the shiny and polished Riverside Shopping Centre, the Antiques Market amazes with its atmosphere and “culturedness”. Most of the local buyers don’t come here just to sightsee though - most of them are looking for things like wooden bracelets or walnut-shaped hand massagers, religious amulets or pet crickets. As for “real” antiques,

you can see vases and pots of all different kinds, glazed

cups and plates, wooden carved fans and lots of other fascinating objects. In fact, even if you see an army of Mao’s marble busts - just another day at the Market of Antiques!

It ’s hard to believe, but to get the freshest air in Tianjin,

you need to go to a market. But, instead of all kinds of material goods, you’ve gotta find plants

Originality and Opera

The Buenos Aires Opera ShowBy Annie Ly

When it comes to musical per formance, it takes a ce r t a i n s o m e t h i n g

to push it to the next level and deliver something unique and s p e c i a l . O n c e a ye a r, S o u t h America based per formance c o m p a ny, t h e B u e n o s A i r e s Opera Show, graces audiences i n T i a n j i n w i t h h i g h q u a l i t y entertainment with some of the finest professionals in the field. This month we caught up with Ezequiel Fautar io, Founding Director of the Buenos Aires Opera Show, who tells us more about the company and what we can expect when they next pay a visit to Tianjin.

Born and raised in Buenos Aires, Ezequiel Fautario is a dab hand at piano and organ playing. With practice since the young age of 5, Fautario first became interested in the opera genre when as a young teenager, a close family friend regularly took him on trips to the Teatro Colón Opera House -- now considered the third best opera house in the world, according to the National Geographic. With a background in organ play ing and a new found passion for opera, Fautario decided to specialise in orchestra conduction of opera repertoires.

I n 2 0 1 1 , Fa u t a r i o f o u n d e d t h e c o m p a n y a n d a l o n g w i t h t a l e n t e d m u s i c i a n s a n d p e r f o r m e r s h a v e b e e n delivering a range of high quality shows for diverse audiences. W i t h a d e e p e n j o y m e n t o f conducting orchestra and singer per formances playing opera excerpts, Fautario admits it’s not the conducting element that he enjoys most. “Conducting a performance is just showing off the finished product. It is the preparation and work with the singers, all the previous work to get a good performance that I enjoy most about my job”, he tells us.

S o j u s t h o w d o t h e B u e n o s A i r e s O p e r a S h o w p r e p a r e for their per formances? With highly trained and professional s i n g e r s , t h e p e r fo r m e r s a re already familiar with a range of repertoires so a lot of focus is placed on preparing scene action. Individual audiences are considered carefully with each performance and new stories are prepared accordingly. Each story is told through different songs, costumes, settings, props, background images and videos to make for unique yet exciting shows. “ We concentrate our effort on combining all those elements to make an original show, but keeping the essence o f o u r r e p e r t o i r e”, Fa u t a r i o explains. As for individual pre-stage preparation routines and traditions, Fautario describes the importance of keeping warm; “If I perform as a pianist, I do my best to keep my feet and hands warm. Even after having played more than 500 shows in my life, I still get a little nervous”, he quips.

B r i n g i n g a n A r g e n t i n e a n f l a v o u r t o a u d i e n c e s , t h e company draws most of their performance inspiration from activity in their home country. From songs to movies, listening to different types of music to watching different types of opera

performances, the company looks to a range a sources to interpret in new ways. Constantly on the search for new ideas, Fautario mentions how some of the best ideas come from out of the blue; “ The new ideas appear from unexpected activity. I instantly take note because I really believe that great ideas appear when you’re perhaps not looking for them”.

Although most of the shows p e r f o r m e d r e v o l v e a r o u n d the main genre of Opera, the Buenos Aires Opera Show has per formed a wide var iety of shows including lyrical concerts, musical flash mobs and marching performances. What is certain is that the company places a lot of emphasis on tailoring their performances to the audience type. People can expect to listen to main opera set lists, mixed with popular songs in operatic style per formed in their own language. Over the years, the c o m p a n y h a s c h a n g e d a n d evolved. Originally consisting on just 12 singers with Fautario as a pianist, now the company is made up of over 35 singers, 2 scene directors, 12 professional singers, 2 tango dancers and over 20 of the best musicians in Buenos Aires. With such a diverse and talented range of performers,

the company has been able to expand their range and perform from different genres; opera, Broadway musicals, Argentine tango, Chinese music, Mexican songs, jazz and more.

W h i l s t i t m i g h t b e e a s y t o assume that the audiences back i n B u e n o s A i re s m u s t d i f fe r completely to Chinese audiences, Fautario explains that actually, they are not very different at all. “We realized that Chinese audiences like almost all the same kinds of songs as the Argentines. They especially love Italian songs and choirs, enjoy watching tango dancers performing just like it happens in Argentina”. Interested in tai lor ing per formances to Chinese tastes, Fautario explains t h a t u n d e r s t a n d i n g C h i n a’s culture is crucial in order to take each performance scene through special Chinese songs, which can be both challenging but ult imately rewarding for both the company and those in China who come to see them play. The good news is that so far, these performances have been received very well by people in China. “Chinese people are usually surprised and incredibly entertained. Most of them have never had the chance to watch an opera singer perform and their

reactions are incredible. We really feel that they understand the emotion we try to transmit”.

Having visited China several times, the Buenos Aires Opera Show have been regular performers at high profile events organised at the Goldin Metropolitan Polo Club Tianjin, such as the World Snow Polo Cup. With luxury facilities combined with the celebration of polo, also known as the ‘sport of kings’, it only seems fitting that the company have repeatedly been asked to perform. “We are committed to high standards by bringing top end musical performances specifically through opera, considered the most fine and complex art in the whole world”, Fautario says. “Each time we go there, we feel part of bringing the essence of luxury to life, like it happened in times when opera performances were a privilege for Kings”.

When they aren’t per forming in China, the company can be found performing all over South America, the USA and Europe. Currently, they are working and preparing for their next show entitled ‘DIVA’. It takes on a fun and humorous approach to the greatest highlights of opera by the hand of a charming and unique soprano. Aside from this, Fautario and the performers are also producing songs and original music for special events. “Producing an event’s original theme music works as a great entertainment tool and challenges us as artists to provide something unique”, he explains. In the next few months, the Buenos Aires Opera Show can be found performing at several European sports championships and tournaments as well as corporate events in Argentina. In the near future, they’ll also be performing at projects in Mexico as well as preparing to return to Tianjin next winter!

“I feel absolutely connected to this amazing city since it was the first one I visited in China”, Fautario reminisces. “Nowadays, I feel it’s my place too. The people are as kind and affectionate as in my country.” As a city, Tianjin is always open to bringing new and exciting experiences for the people who live here and with that, we hope it won’t be too long before the Buenos Aires Opera Show grace Tianjiners with original, unique and highly entertaining opera performances. We’ll be waiting with a warm welcome back...

Making a SplashWater Sports in Tianjin

By Michelle Port

Summer has arrived in Tianjin and it’s time to let you in on a refreshing little secret.

Although it’s not a well known fact, Tianjin is home to some of the best water sports facilities in China, providing those who live in the city with a wealth of opportunities to get involved with something exciting and adventurous – if not a tad wet! Wi t h T i a n j i n s e e i n g s o a r i n g temperatures and sunnier days, there is no better time to find out more about the world of water sports. This month, we caught up with Mr QiLu Zhai, Founder of Tianhaifeng Water Sports Club in DongLi District to let our readers find out how to get involved.

Launching the Tianhaifeng Water Sports Club back in 2006, Mr Zhai has been in the water sports business for 10 years. However, his affinity to water goes back even further. “When I was a kid, I liked water very much. From the age of 7 years old, I always had a special feeling when I was in water”, he explains. Throughout his life, Zhai has always sought out adventure. Whether on land, sea or air, there are few adventurous sports he hasn’t tried - from off-road driving to hiking, parachute jumping to flying helicopters and hot air balloons over the Serengeti in Africa.

H o w e v e r , h i s c h i l d h o o d experiences with water led him to his current passion for water sports and there are now very few that he can’t do. Sai l ing boats, wake boarding, jet-skiing, canoeing – you name it and Zhai has done it. It was only in 2005 during the World Water Ski Championships that Zhai first tried wakeboarding and water-skiing. Although with no prior

experience, Zhai tried for the first time with great success. “My body is very adaptive and could co-ordinate with the water very well. I felt the excitement of doing so well and from that moment, I fell in love with water-skiing!” Since, Zhai has never looked back, turning his passion for water sports into a job and business he loves.

So why consider water sports in Tianjin? According to Zhai, water sports are some of the most trendy and healthy sports out there. Compared with other sports, it’s a great way to get closer to nature. “Especially when sailing a boat or diving, there is a relaxing feeling to be at one with water”, says Zhai. Beyond getting in touch with

Mother Nature, Zhai highlights the benefits of water sports for building team work skills; “All water sports have the ability to make people relax, but it is also a great platform for people with similar hobbies to get to know each other and communicate. The best kind of water sport for building team spirit is definitely sailing”. Tianhaifeng Water Sports Club also focus on dragon boat sailing for team building purposes, completing many successful projects with famous companies and organizations such as CCTV, Beijing TV Station and Airbus 320. For thrill seekers, water sports such as water-skiing and jet-skiing are great choices. “They’re sports full of speed and passion”, says Zhai. Ultimately though, Zhai

believes that all water sports fulfill the same function – to alleviate stress and free oneself from the pressures of life; “No matter how tired you are from work or studies, water sports are a great way to let yourself go and forget about your worries”.

From humble beginnings just ten years ago, Tianhaifeng Water Sports Club has expanded their offerings from simple jet skis to a wide variety of activities which cater to all ages and abilities. With special training programmes for children, teens and adults for a range of sports, people of Tianjin are able to take advantage no matter what level they are. “For the people who feel afraid to try out these sports for the first time, you can be assured that Tianhaifeng can help you to overcome your fe a r s . We h ave p ro fe s s i o n a l national level coaches on hand to teach you well. We consider all technical and safety factors so that people who do not even know how to swim can take part in water-skiing and sailing. Ev e r y e n t i t y , h o w e v e r i n s i g n i f i c a n t , h a s a n important role to play and

this best describes the journey of Instituto Cervantes, a Spanish entity which under the guidance of i ts Direc tor, namely I nma Gonzalez Puy, has spread its wings to far flung shores of the Asian continent. Instituto Cervantes has been functioning in Beijing for the last 10 years and its Director Inma has effectively put into place a process that has connected the two countries like never before. But has the road to glory and renown been as easy as it appears to be today?

Celebrating 10th Anniversary of Instituto Cervantes with Inma Director of Instituto Cervantes in Beijing

On 11th of May, 1991, the Spanish Government laid the foundation o f I n s t i t u t o C e r v a n t e s w i t h the intention of spreading the Spanish language and creating awareness of the unique Spanish culture the world over. It had been named as such to commemorate Miguel de Cervantes who lived in the second half of the 16th century and was responsible for creating the memorable character of Don Quijote. What started out as a single center in Madrid now enjoys a presence in 20 countries around the world, managing a network of 54 centers with plans to add more.

In a bid to fulfill its duty, the Instituto Cervantes is responsible for preparing a detailed outline of courses for teaching Spanish for both general as well as advanced categories of students. Some of the methods adopted by the institute comprise of creating an environment congenial to the teaching and learning of the language whilst adopting a student-centric approach. One of its recent achievements has been the introduction of an app that facilitates learning Spanish via online media. While organizing programs, fest ivals and fairs reflecting Spanish culture, the institute is also responsible for maintaining libraries and centers across the world while managing a virtual presence on the Internet too.

Fueled by the need to bridge the gap between the two countries in terms of language and culture, I n m a w a s a p p o i n t e d a s t h e Director of Instituto Cervantes in Beijing in 2006 with blessings from the ruling powers of both countries. This year the Institute is celebrating its tenth birthday amidst a feeling of achievement for what it has accomplished over the last decade and plenty of hope with regards to what lies ahead. Because it was meant to serve as a cultural center, Instituto Cervantes is not just concerned with dissemination of Spanish

language but is also responsible for organizing cultural events and exhibitions, not to mention maintaining a full-fledged library.

Back in 2006 when Inma was asked to head Instituto Cervantes, she embarked on the task with the fervor of a true Spaniard and began by searching for a perfect location for this establishment. Having scoured the city and checked at least eighty locales, the team finalized one which w a s f l a n k e d b y t h e C e n t r a l Business District on one side and the Sanlitun area on the other. Given its equal proximity to both commercial and cultural facets of the city, it also turned out to be a perfect spot for operating commercial promotion agencies of Spain. Of course, this also

ensured that it was close to transit points so that there would always be a steady stream of students owing to bus and subway stations being in close by.

Over the last decade that the Instituto Cervantes has been functioning, it has stood tall as a symbol of linguistic proficiency and cultural recognition. As far as the teaching of Spanish is concerned, the institute offers courses for all age groups and also has a teacher training program. So irrespective of whether you are a child, teenager or an adult, all you require is the yearning to learn Spanish in order to enroll for a course that appears to be most suitable for you. Year 2015 was a landmark year in Instituto Cervantes’ history because the

number of registrations crossed the 4000 mark. In addition to the weekend classes wherein all 22 classrooms are filled to brim, expansion has occurred through channels like online teaching wherein the student need not even visit the center. Thanks to apps like Global AVE, the Institute has made learning possible on smartphones and tablets while on the go.

Applicants to Instituto Cervantes can be broadly segregated into three distinct profiles: future students, university students and young professionals, not to mention children and their parents. Director Inma attributes this growing popularity to the fact that Spanish is the second most spoken language in the world and

hence is an asset for students and young professionals who wish to improve their position within a company or seek professional integration.

Interest towards Spanish also gained momentum when the Chinese President Xi J inping e m p h a s i z e d t h e n e e d o f a bilingual workforce in order to surge ahead. To this effect, there is a large void when it comes to finding Chinese professionals who are trained in their professions and are also fluent in Spanish. In such a situation, the onus is on establishments like Instituto Cervantes and their directors like Inma to ensure that professionals f r o m a l l w a l k s o f l i f e a r e sufficiently trained in Spanish to be able to carry out work without a translator. Teacher training programs offered by Institute Cervantes have been designed to ensure continuity as regards the spread of language.

The learning of Spanish is not just limited to Instituto Cervantes and the turning point in China occurred when more than 40,000 students enrolled for Spanish courses at Chinese Universities a c r o s s t h e c o u n t r y f o r t h e academic year 2014-2015. Out of these, as many as 6000 travelled to Spain with the intention of further continuing their study of the language in a Spanish University. Inma explained this trend as being an outcome of exemplary standards maintained by Spanish Universities not to mention the multicultural fabric that marks every campus in the country. There is also the added attraction of travelling to another countr y and ex per ie nc ing a culture that is varied from your

own – an incentive that had drawn Inma to China many years back.

For such students, I nst i tuto Cervantes is a perfect gateway, especially since the introduction of SIELE system of evaluation which, in addition to Spain, is also followed by USA and Brazil. SIELE will be applied in addition to the existing DELE system and in fact would serve to fortify it as far as certification is concerned.

Celebration of culture forms a n i m p o r t a n t p a r t o f j o b description in Instituto Cervantes and each fair and festival is a

commemoration of the country and culture that she left behind. With the 10th birthday being an important milestone, it calls for a mega celebration. What could be a better way to begin than by upholding the anniversaries o f t w o r e n o w n e d e n t i t i e s , namely Miguel de Cervantes, a noteworthy Spanish author and the original Instituto Cervantes in Spain? Adding to the list is the arrival of Javier Cercas, a renowned Spanish author with best sellers like ‘The Imposter’ to his name. What renders this piece of literary work truly interesting is the author ’s comparison of his main protagonist with Don Quijote, the legendary comedian.

Many of the books written by Cercas are being translated into Chinese wherein he is joined by Chen Zhongyi, a Chinese expert who is well versed in literature and is also proficient in Spanish, to provide meaningful insights. Then there is Book Day wherein Chinese translations of more than a hundred books based on Don Quijote would be displayed. This exhibition would also have the honor of displaying the very first edition of Cervantes’ work that made its appearance in China in 1933.

Instituto Cervantes also takes a lot of pr ide in celebrat ing Dia E, meaning Spanish Day, on June 18th. Ever yone who speaks Spanish is invited for partying. Like the last seven years,

Instituto Cervantes will leave no stone unturned in celebrating this festival which takes place simultaneously in five continents. O t h e r c e l e b r a t o r y e v e n t s organized by the institute are the exhibition about the parallels between the art at Silk Road and Pilgrimage Route of Santiago and active participation in the Shanghai Jazz Festival and Design Week at Beijing. A partnership w i t h X u y u a n , a C h i n e s e a r t Foundation, is also on the cards to provide Spanish artists with a platform in China to display their works.

Did you know that the Instituto Cervantes has a library on its premises too which is dedicated to none other than Antonio Machado, a world renowned

master of Spanish poetry? This library is home to as many as 20,000 books and is inclusive, among other subjects, of books on Sinology as a lso Chinese translations of Spanish literary works.

A journey that began in 1991 in the form of Instituto Cervantes has not only reaped rich rewards for its country of origin but also for an entire generation. It has opened hitherto closed doors and broadened horizons in terms of employment. If anything is to be measured in terms of its impact, one made by Instituto Cervantes would probably turn out to be the longest lasting owing to the manner in which it has changed a generation and will continue to do so for many long years to come.

It's a great adventure to explore the deep roots of any cuisine and try something new. If you are in a mood to go on an adventurous food trail in Tianjin, then now is your chance. All you have to do is set your destination to Bazndei Yunnan Food Restaurant, situated in Joy city IF Street. In the Bamei Zhuang

language, Bazndei means beautiful village of Yunnan. In fact it’s true, it is a beautiful and picturesque location, once very remote, and with a unique cuisine. The restaurant has a smart casual dining experience packed with many unexpected, yet pleasant 'surprises' of Yunnan cuisine. Surprise is the number one adrenaline boosting factor you will sense from this restaurant.

After a successful saga of Yunnan cuisine restaurants in Shanghai and Beijing, it is now Tianjin’s turn to join in. The owner of this restaurant handpicked exciting dishes to serve Tianjin people with the aim of satisfying any customer’s personal taste and making no compromise on quality standards.

The interior design and ambience is based on a contemporary and modern industrial theme. Old simply designed furniture, uncovered ceilings with hundreds of pipes and wires and rusty iron stairs reminds one of those of the industrial age of the past century.

Unlock the flavours of

Yunnan Cuisine By Jon J. Suresh

We began the course with a toast of refreshing and tantalizing homemade sweet r ice wine. Our first surprise was that this restaurant has ‘no menu’. Yes, the restaurant doesn't offer a menu to their customers! Instead the waiters wi l l ask for your choice of flavours and the chef will prepare an astonishing set menu accordingly using organic ingredients.

Yunnan cuisine has been getting more famous recently. Its use of exotic ingredients and spices, especially the various selections of mushrooms, f lowers, fungi and ferns is considered as a way to a very healthy and balanced diet. The cuisine has influences and flavours from Mangolia, the North-eastern part of India and Tibet which provide a good touch of spiciness to it. The ‘no menu’ concept allows any customer to appreciate Yunnan cuisine by allowing the restaurant’s expert staff to understand your personal preferences to prepare the dishes.

Fi n a l l y, o u r a ro m at i c d i s h e s were served. Hot and crunchy b r e a d s t i c k s m a d e w i t h r i c e accompanied with a hot chicken dish, mixture of mushrooms, sweet plums and creamy sauce. A fresh salad with herbs, deep fried mushrooms and a base of

fresh cucumber shreds with local Yunnan salad dressings on a slate plate. Another surprising factor is that hot and cold appetizers are served together, something ver y dif ferent and new from most other restaurants. The hot appetizer was extraordinarily delicious with sautéed cauliflower and a sprinkling of secret spice mix on top. Later, a cold one with baby fava bean and flowers with different sour dressings.

For the main dish - a steamy and fiery fish with hot sauce served traditional Chinese hot pot style. For entrees, the first was fried prawns with mint leaves and authentic seasonings. The mix of fresh ingredients and exotic flavors gives it an appeal even royalty could enjoy. The second was pan-fried assorted green vegetables with beef s l ices . Even with my amateur level of chopstick skills within couple of minutes we managed to finish everything. So I should say it was not finger licking good, it was chopstick licking good.

For beverages, we were expecting ‘no menu’ again , but surprisingly they have a long l isted, wel l organized and wide selection for the bar menu which includes l iquor, cocktai ls (c lass ic and fusion), mocktails, soft drinks, hot

and cold beverages. We ordered a pu'er martini. Pu'er tea is well known and sourced from Yunnan. The microbial aged pu'er tea is another wonder to health science researchers as it helps to reduce fatty acids in the l iver which results weight loss. The cocktail is made with pu'er tea leaves, ginger, mint leaves and some secret ingredients from Bazndei Yunnan team. It was unbelievably refreshing and a great way to finish our fantastic meal.

We also decided to grab some beer. They offered us wonderful l iquid gold k nown as 'Wind, Flower, Snow & Moon'. After a sip I was floating in the wind, flowers, snows, and moon over Yunnan. Now I understand the name! There are so many untouched and unnoticed beers like this in Asia which should come on to the scene.

I will certainly be back soon to finish some unfinished business. About to take a leave, we noticed an art gallery expo on display in this restaurant. The theme is changed seasonally and paintings are hand selected by the owner. Realizing this fact, I decided to surrender for the day and plan to visit this place again soon, leaving new surprises in store for new Tianjiners like me.

Angela says:

Really, it depends on what your long term situation is. If you plan to be in China for the foreseeable future, this is a big decision to make – especially if your girlfriend isn’t planning on moving to another country to be with you. That said, there’s no reason why you can’t make it work. Sure, you have to communicate through a screen rather than face to face but that’s just how most people keep in touch these days. If she’s worth it, penciling in a regular Skype date shouldn’t seem like much effort. It boils down to this – they say absence makes the heart grow fonder but if that isn’t the case for you then maybe it’s just not worth it.

Daemon says: Long distance relationships are a terrible idea, end of story. For a start you have to spend

countless hours on the phone or writing emails every week just so the other person feels secure. Then you have the constant niggling feeling that he or she is at the other side of the world getting it on with someone else. Also from your side there are always plenty of

new opportunities being dangled in your face that make you wonder if you should still be with your distant lover. And on top of all that it is just too damn impractical; there is only so

much love you can get from a Skype date or a Wechat message.

My advice is put an end to it and get on with your new life. There are lots of potential love candidates right here in this city that will offer you far more fun than you can get from the occasional video call!

IT'S ALL ABOUT SHORTS!By Oshani Silva

With the temperatures hitting the mid thirties it's time once again to glam it up in a pair of shorts. Shorts add so much versatility to your wardrobe. This month’s fashion column is

all about how to pair shorts for that perfect summer outfit.

The Bohemian BabeBohemian outfits and style is based on freedom of expression, the freedom to combine different items of clothing to reflect your uniqueness. Pair an off-shoulder boho shirt with a pair of denim shorts or a dainty printed long sleeved top with frayed denim shorts. If it's one of those days that's simply too hot for denim, pair pom pom shorts with a tribal print and a cute lace cropped top. You can accessorize with a chunky necklace, an embellished bangle and a pair of flat sandals, unleashing the gypsy within.

The CutieTry a white crop top with a pair of floral shorts. Opt for a halter crop top, coloured high-waisted shorts or pair a sleeveless crop top with high-waisted shorts and sneakers.

The Night Time DivaPair a black tank top with a tailored white jacket and cuffed shorts. Pair this with a sleek pair of black heels. Accessorize with a chunky necklace in gold or bronze and don't forget an amazing clutch. You can even try the white on white trend with a pair of white and grey linen shorts, a silky white top and a longer jacket. To add a bit more colour incorporate jackets with shades that pop.

The RebelPair a loose racer back top and high-waisted shorts. You could also pair a lace bralette, a white tank and a flannel shirt along with high-waisted denim shorts and of course high top sneakers. You can also try a cut out graphic tank and layer a neon, lace or denim bralette underneath with a pair of denim shorts. Make a statement by breaking one fashion rule at a time.

There may be no better way to demonstrate China’s economic development

than to examine its relationship with the bicycle. From a state-o w n e d m a s s - m a n u f a c t u r e d product, utilised by all ages in an egalitarian uniformity, to the specialized top-end creations enabling fitness, eco-friendliness and self-actualisation, the bicycle and its use have come a long way. (The same is true of pretty much every consumer good these days, of course. I can remember when sneakers were generic, before

By Mike Cormack

Nike and Reebok ‘developed the market’, as they say).

Which is to say that bike culture in China has come a long way, with events and specialized brands proliferating. The modern fixed-gear bikes, popular with young urban professionals, are often evident on Tianjin’s streets, but the cycle lanes remain notably busy with all types and brands. You may not know it, but Tianjin has a long and proud history of bicycle production. The Flying Pigeon bike company, perhaps

the biggest-selling bicycle brand in history with more than 500 million units sold, was founded in Tianjin in 1936. Vice president Liu Shaoqi visited the factory in 1949, giving the go-ahead for it to be the first bicycle manufacturer in the new China. It makes sense, then, that Tianjin has become a center for bicycle development and production in modern China, with over 30 brands of bicycle, both domestic and international, now located in Jinghai District, to the south-east of the city across the Duliujian River. Annual

output is estimated to be in the region of 10 million bicycles. The local government also promises development of a bicycle theme park, a BMX park, and Tuanbo Lake track, to encourage and promote the industry and culture in Tianjin. It’s great to see a local industry renowned through the nation, with a positive environmental output and the wind behind its back.

O n e o f t h e m o s t e x c i t i n g developments of the cycl ing culture centers on the Tuanbo Lake track. The lake (in the east of Jinghai) borders Daqiu village, some 24 kilometers from the city center, and has a surface area of 67 square kilometers (making it larger than Scotland’s Loch Ness). A Tour of Tuanbo Lake has been

successfully held for seven years, with a 70km race for men, a 50km race for women and experience riding for amateurs attracting hundreds of participants from Tianjin, Beijing, Hebei, Liaoning, Shandong and beyond ever y year. The size of the organization continues to expand, and each year sees higher and higher levels of competitor.

With the event developing over its seven-year run, the race has grown to become more than a competition: it’s a gathering point for bike enthusiasts from all over northern China. So come to the beautiful Tuanbo Lake to join the tour this autumn, whether as a spectator or an entrant, and enjoy the fun.

“It’s Speaking Time” @ International School of TianjinOn April 29th, 2016, IST students from Nursery to Grade 5 wowed the community with their poetry, monologues and choirs in 'It’s Speaking Time at IST', a delightful celebration of spoken English. These students were the finalists chosen from a long process that took place during the month of April, which is celebrated every year at IST as Poetry Month. Each year, during Poetry Month in April, the elementary students at IST start getting excited about learning poems. Their aim is to get to center stage and dazzle their audience and judges at “It’s Speaking Time”, and it has to be said that they were successful in doing just that! They started their learning in class where all students were given a variety of poems that they could choose from and learn. The first step was to perform their poem in front of their class, with all the techniques of spoken English that they have learned. If they managed that with style, they could be selected for the semi-finals. The aim from there was to be selected to go to the finals. Each year, the students stop the audience in their tracks with how well they perform. This year the judges, Ms. Janice Lanham and Ms. Jo Reston, were mesmerized by the overall standard, with winners coming from all over the globe. Not only was the audience amazed by the individual students performing their poems, but when a group of students took to the stage and performed monologues, the audience was astounded!! We have all listened to children perform in choirs, usually singing choirs that is, but here at IST elementary students also have the opportunity to be in speaking choirs. This year Pre-K, Grade 2 and Grade 4 shone as they performed nursery rhymes and poems about whales and those dreaded modern monsters…mobile phones. It truly was a fabulous morning of spoken English!

Earth Day @ International School of TianjinEarth Day 2016 was celebrated at International School of Tianjin (IST) with a plethora of activities school-wide to raise awareness about the importance of preserving our beautiful planet and its environment. The activities that the elementary and secondary students participated in included tree nourishing, tree planting, strawberry planting, learning from some wonderful exhibitors including Vestas, Smart Air, Farm Fresh etc, that are dedicated in their business towards protecting the earth’s environment. There was also a Science Fair held where the Secondary students participated in many science activities and an amazing science exhibition. The day ended with a whole school assembly where awards for AmCham’s first Tianjin Recycling Challenge (TReC 2016) were given out. 2 local international schools, IST and TIS participated in this first ever challenge. Many special guests and dignitaries from the Tianjin American Chamber of Commerce, and the American Embassy in Beijing also graced the occasion. Many thanks to the school's Green Team and the amazing Science teachers for leading the organization of this very meaningful and educative day!

OBESITY

Obesity has become one o f t h e m a j o r h e a l t h i s s u e s a f f e c t i n g b o t h

males and females of varying ages. Be it toddlers or off ice workers in their late thir ties, obesity is wel l on i ts way to becoming a global epidemic. The word "obesity" means too much body fat. It's not simply about being chubby, p lump or considered ' fat "by society - it is far from a mere cosmetic concern. Individuals with obesity are at risk of suffering from an array of illnesses, some even life threatening. There are numerous causes that lead to obesity. One of the main causative factors is genetics. The genetic makeup of individuals may affect the amount and distribution of the body fat stored. Inactivity is another main factor leading to obesity. If you sit around all day with no exercise, just piling up the extra calories, chances are you are already at risk.

Other factors like age and poverty also play a part in the rise of

obesity seen today. Social factors like not having a safe place to exercise, not being able to afford healthier food, and the people you spend time with may influence your weight — you're more likely to become obese if you have obese friends or relatives. Obesity can occur at any age, even in young children. But as you age, hormonal changes and a less active lifestyle increase your risk of obesity.

Obesity can forbid you from enjoying your life to the fullest. You might start to feel hopeless and feel l ike you don't have control over your own body. Some patients start avoiding social gatherings and prefer to spend time on their own away from family and friends. This can also lead to disability and lower work achievement.

The good news is that even modest weight loss can improve or prevent the health problems associated with obesity. Dietary changes, increased phys ica l

activity and behaviour changes can help you lose weight. As a start, aim to lose 1-2 pounds a week. Get started with a good weight loss program that suits your needs. Ask your doctor to help you set personal goals. Refer to a nutritionist who can help you with a food plan, and a physical therapist or trainer can help you move more. Losing weight is not an overnight process. It takes time and dedication from your end as well. Little changes in your lifestyle make a big difference in the end. Walk instead of taking the bus, choose the stairs over the elevator, and skip the burger for a salad. You will start to see the steady progress of your health over time, and learn to make lifestyle changes that work for you for the long run.

Under the metal archways of this arty looking district and past a boxing gym, you come to find the distinctive ‘π’ logo lit up in neon. Stumbling across this venue truly feels like you’re in on the coolest secret in town, making it the most apt space for LMT Connection to fill the room with their funky tunes.

For live music lovers, Pai Live House is like discovering a hidden g e m . W i t h a s p a c i o u s m a i n standing area enough to support around 400 people and different floors with open balconies, it’s

LMT Connection have wowed the crowds on the gig circuit for years. Their effortless sense of cool teamed with a strong set list showed that this legendary band know just how to get the crowd going. In the opening number, the infectious beats of the band’s drummer, also known as Hard Hittin’ Mark Rogers, got heads nodding. Giving us a taste of bass, John Irvine treated the crowd to

Oozing with charm and sexiness, ‘Your Body’s Hot’ was a particular favourite with the audience. Beginning the Latino inspired song with a cheeky “Te quiero” and “Wo ai ni” aimed at the ladies, the multilingual exclamations of love followed by Leroy’s soulful scatting and an impressive drum solo from Rogers made for a memorable highlight. How To Celebrate Dragon Boat FestivalBy Michelle Port

June has swung round again quickly and this month China celebrates one of its most exciting national holidays - Dragon Boat Festival or ‘Duānwǔ Jié’ (端午节). Normally falling on the fifth

day of the fifth lunar month, the festival is also known as Double Fifth Festival. The focus of the celebration involves boat racing, the eating of speciality foods and other customs and traditions. Want to find out more about how to celebrate this Chinese festival?

OriginsA big par t of the Dragon Boat Festival celebration involves understanding its origins.

As the story goes, a famous statesman and poet named Qu Yuan served as a loyal adviser to the King of Chu during the third century

BC. As a scholarly minister, Qu Yuan invoked jealousy a n d d i s c o n t e n t

a m o n g s t o t h e r o f f i c i a l s w h o fe l t

he antagonised them. Together they accused him of

conspiracy leading the King of Chu to exile him. During his exile, Qu Yuan produced many poems to express his sorrow. He is regarded as one of China’s best poets.

In his final act, Qu Yuan committed suicide by tying a rock to his

chest and drowning himself in the Miluo River in 278 BC. Those who considered Qu Yuan an honourable man tried to save him taking boats to the river and looking for him desperately in the waters. Others threw rice into the river in the hope that the fishes would not eat Qu Yuan’s body. More specifically, they would throw zongzi (sticky rice) which would sink to the bottom to tempt the fish away.

TraditionsSo what should you be doing to celebrate Dragon Boat Festival in the traditional way?

Dragon Boat Racing Much like the locals who tried to save the body of Qu Yuan, every year people fulfil the tradition of taking to the waters to race dragon boats. The dragon boat is human powered with many sitting inside paddling in unison for movement. Boats can vary in size to accommodate up to 80 rowers in one boat. Boats are elaborately designed with a dragon head at the stern of the boat. It is believed that the winners of the boat race will being in a good harvest and

happy lives for the people of their village. Now a

highly popular

sport in southern parts of China, dragon boat racing is also carried out beyond China in countries such as the UK, US, Canada and Australia.

Eat Zongzi It is a tradition around this time of year for Chinese people to eat Zongzi (粽子), a pyramid shaped sticky rice delicacy often wrapped in bamboo leaves. The central fillings can vary from red bean to dates, meat to eggs and the Zongzi is steamed to cook. If you can’t find the homemade kind, head down to your local bakery to sample this symbolic traditional food.

Wearing Incense BagsI n order to keep ev i l sp i r i ts away, f ragrant incense bags are worn around the people’s necks, especially that of children. Children decorate their clothes w i t h a r a n g e o f f r a g r a n c e d p o u c h e s a n d a l s o we a r f i ve coloured silk threads around their wrists and necks. It is said that silk threads have healing properties.

As Dragon Boat Festival always falls around summer time, it is customar y to hang mugwor t leaves and calamus at the top of your door to ward off disease.

The special scent of these leaves is said to purify the air and repel mosquitoes or flies. In the essence of promoting good health, this tradition is a popular one.

If this is your first time celebrating Dragon Boat Festival, keep an eye out for these traditions this year! Wishing you a happy and healthy holiday.

Caption: Rolf and Maedy Geyling starting their life in Tientsin (Geyling page 246)

The reasons for families relocating to Tientsin were varied but, for many, they were drawn by the opportunities of China. Rolf Geyling was one such man. As an Austrian, he’d enlisted to fight for the Germans in the First World War. In May 1915, he was captured by the Russians during the Brussilow

offensive. As a prisoner-of-war, he was shuttled from camp to camp each time moving further east into Siberia until he was finally in Vladivostok. No longer a prisoner, due to the chaos unleashed by the Russian Revolution, he managed to get to Manchuria using forged papers. Gradually he worked his way south ending up in Peitaiho (Beidaihe). As an architect, he was able to pick up work in the burgeoning seaside resort for foreigners. He could see the potential for longer-term employment so after returning to Austria to be reunited with his wife, Hermine Schmidts (known as Maedy), they came back to China to start a new life.

Growing Up in TientsinFranz Geyling

August 1921 saw them in rented accommodation in Tientsin. Rolf was a busy architect and chief engineer for numerous building projects. Maedy was acclimatizing to China and the expatriate social circles.

In the winter of 1923, they began to prepare for the arrival of a child. Expatriate ladies kindly dropped in to deliver all sorts of hand-me-downs from their grown-up children. On 4 August 1924, a daughter was born – Maria Barbara, affectionately called Mausi. Two years later in 1926, a brother arrived – Franz Thomas.

As was typical at the time, the children had a full-time nanny or ‘amah’, who saw to their daily needs, supervised by their parents. Expatriate children often developed close relationships with these ‘grandma’ figures in the absence of their real grandparents. The family’s medical needs were met by Dr Bruell who became a family friend and faithfully served the German community.

Parents, as today, sought out a variety of toys to occupy their children. Having an architect as a father, it is no surprise to see the children playing with assorted blocks and building kits.

Father Rolf also cleverly constructed play spaces on the flat roofs of the servants’ quarters in the backyard of the Geyling home in the German concession area. It was in the backyard too that they played croquet. There were pets to provide company: the family cat Pussi, and later a dog. Franz had much pleasure on the rocking horse his father adapted so it could swing without damaging the floor.

Sports such as rowing, curling and figure skating were enjoyed by Rolf who also taught these to his children from an early age. They frequented the many clubs around Tientsin’s concessions. In pair skating, Mausi would take the lead but Franz progressed to jumps and pirouettes.

In the milder months, Franz would fly kites and the model gliders he had made from balsa wood. In the summer, the children would have swimming lessons at the Tientsin Swimming Club and then get to use the skills in the sea off Peitaiho, where families retreated in the summer heat. They only returned to visit family in Austria and Rumania in 1929 and 1939, which involved a lengthy train trip across Russia, or an equally lengthy boat trip.

Special outings would be to see a movie, such as Snow White, or outings with the youth group to which Franz belonged. They had camping trips, picnics with impromptu plays, and rabbit hunts where some of the boys dangerously chased the rabbits towards the hunters. Sometimes, as a family, they’d go further afield to visit historic Chinese sites.

Life growing up in Tientsin was not all play though! Once the children reached school-going age, they were sent to the German school (the building is still there, as a school, on the corner of Taiwan Lu and Shao Xing Dao). It was run by local expatriate Germans, and went from kindergarten to Year 12. Teachers and resources were provided by the German Ministry of Education in Berlin which also ensured that good standards of education were kept. In the elementary grades, the Geyling children were introduced to German spelling, formal grammar, both Gothic and Latin, and hand-writing. In addition, they also learnt ‘what do people do all day’, civics, simple geography, music, basic Protestant religious education and sports such as European-style handball, ‘schlagball’ (European version of baseball), and in spring, track sports including sprinting, javelin and long jump. Whenever the teacher entered a classroom, students had to rise and greet them and they were expected to stand when answering any question. Failure to answer correctly could result in having a smack to the ear, as Franz remembered happening in Grade 1!

There were various extra-curricular activities. Franz had piano lessons, with Arthur Siersch, and also took art classes. Over the years, the Geyling siblings took part in art exhibitions, concerts, and Christmas shows in the German Club Concordia. On May Day there was a gymnastic presentation at the school together with Maypole dancing, human pyramid-building, drills and team games.

By the time the Geylings reached high school, the Second World War was being waged in Europe. Sending the children back to stay with family was not a safe option nor was going to Shanghai that was occupied by Japanese soldiers. The German School Board, of which Rolf Geyling was then secretary, came up with creative ways of helping the five remaining students prepare for the Arbitur matriculation exam to ensure entry into German-speaking universities. Exams required writing a German essay, translations from Latin, French and English, Maths (Calculus and Spherical Trigonometry), and oral exams, which included Physics, Biology, Chemistry and History followed by physical exercise tests with sparring, using high bars and parallel bars. Following this, Rolf continued to sponsor his son by arranging private lessons with a variety of engineers in Tientsin as college preparation.

Growing up took place in a city with multiple political undercurrents and tensions with the Second World War across Europe, Japanese occupation of large tracts of China, and Nationalist and Communist Chinese forces fighting. While the adults faced the daily stress, it would seem the children, by and large, grew up unaware and, for the German community, as an ally of Japan, life continued without the disruption of internment. Mausi married in 1946 and went to Freiburg, Germany with her husband. Franz went to study at Stanford in the USA in 1947. The parents downsized their home, turning the upstairs children’s room into their bedroom and lounge and renting out the downstairs rooms. As the family dispersed, so too was the foreign community in Tientsin scattering - life in Tientsin for the Geylings was coming to an end.

Postscript:

Rolf Geyling died in Tientsin in 1952. Maedy returned to Austria where she died in 1980. Franz ended up as a successful research engineer, living in the USA where he married. His wife Helga, their four children and grandchildren still live there. He died in February 2014.

What is the best thing about living in Tianjin? It is a beautiful and attractive city with many famous universities, mouth-watering food, convenient transportation, magnificent theaters and shopping malls. There are infinite possibilities. Living in Tianjin, you don’t know what will happen next. It is a fast developing city with many learning resources and work opportunities. It may be a major city in China, but it doesn’t have the hectic feel of cities like Beijing and Shanghai. I think that is Tianjin’s best character trait.Another great thing is that there are many foreigners here and I can tell them how great China is because we have 5,000 years of history (yayyyy!). I know how much foreigners love to hear about this! (joke)

What is the worst thing about living in Tianjin? The pollution. Especially in winter, the smog is really annoying. A shame really, because a sunny day in Tianjin is a pretty sight, especially if you're at the Water Park.

Where are your favourite places in the city?

Dragon Boat Festival (9 June)

Dragon Boat Festival or ‘Duānwǔ Jié’ is an annually celebrated Chinese national holiday which has been observed for over 2,000 years. The festival commemorates the life and death of famous Chinese scholar and poet Qu Yuan who is said to have drowned himself in the Miluo River after being falsely exiled by the King of Chu in the third century BCE. Traditional customs include eating zongzi (glutinous rice balls) and paddle boat races.

World Blood Donor Day (14 June)

Did you know that blood donation by just 1% of the world’s population could meet a nation’s basic requirement of blood? World Blood Donor Day sets out to raise awareness of the need for safe blood to save millions of lives around the world. Celebrated annually on the 14th June, people are encouraged to head down to their local blood bank and make a selfless donation, asking for nothing in return.

International Picnic Day (18 June)

We’re now well into the summer season and all over the world, International Picnic Day celebrates holding a friendly outdoor feast with special friends and close ones. It doesn’t take much effort to take an hour out of your day to enjoy the great outdoors and some sunshine. Pack up some of your favourite snacks, sandwiches and sweet treats, take a blanket and head down to your closest park for some homemade al fresco dining. International Picnic Day is as good a time as any to really take in the best of summer.

Pink Day (23 June)

No one is certain of the origins of Pink Day but for just one day a year people, both girls and boys, are encouraged to wear something pink. It doesn’t mean you have to step out head to toe in pink (although if that tickles your fancy, there’s nothing to stop you!) but you might consider being a bit more creative with your fashion choices. Try a flash of pink with socks, shoes, a tie or some jewelry.

Camera Day (29 June)

No one is certain of the origins of Pink Day but for just one day a year people, both girls and boys, are encouraged to wear something pink. It doesn’t mean you have to step out head to toe in pink (although if that tickles your fancy, there’s nothing to stop you!) but you might consider being a bit more creative with your fashion choices. Tang Mu Hai’s recognition lies far out of China’s boundaries - he was conducting in Berlin, Vienna, Hamburg and Rhine and performed in “Eugene Onegin”," Marriage of Figaro”," Carmen”," Madame butterfly "," Turandot "," La Traviata “ and many other immortal symphonic masterpieces. This time the music that he is going to indulge the Tianjin public with will be grim and tragic - notes of late Beethoven and Mahler.

PerformanceWarsaw drama troupe “(A)POLLONIA”

Date & Time: June 10th, 19:30

Adress: Tianjin Grand theatre, Opera house

Ticket: 580 RMB, 380 RMB, 280 RMB, 180 RMB, 120 RMB

This modern performance created by Warsaw Theatre is made to shock viewers with its visuals, theatrical techniques and tangled plot line. The performance consists of two parts; first part is based on the famous Greek myth about Iphigenia and Agamemnon, and the second relates to the modern history, showing the life of the woman, that hides Jews from Nazis during the Second World War. “(A)POLLONIA” is fully expresses and opens up viewers to the mystical complexity of human nature, often fighting between two

direct opposites. The Warsaw Drama Troupe’s main philosophy lies in belief that every theatrical performance should open a dialogue and promote “another” angle of view.

Movie World of Warcraft

One of the most anticipated (especially by gamers and fans) movies of 2016 will be on the big screen in June. Graphics and special effects are promised to be just unbelievable, but the plot strikes as pretty trivial: portals, wars, orcs and goblins, clashes of swords and weapons, and so on. But, again, that’s World of Warcraft after all.The Director of the movie, Duncan Jones (The Moon, Source code) promised to make the movie version of the popular computer game, a totally new experience.

In a league of its own: The rise of League of Legends

By John Li

League of Legends, know as ‘LoL’ for short, is a free-to-play multiplayer online

battle arena game first published by Riot Games in 2009. With an est imated 27 mil l ion people playing every day, this article will explore the rise in popularity of this online championship. In League of Legends, players assume the role of a ‘summoner’ who controls a ‘champion’ with unique abilities. This ‘champion’ then battles against a team of other players or other computer-controlled champions. The goal is usually to destroy the opposing team's ‘nexus’, a structure that is located at the heart of a base protected by other defensive structures.

League of Legends was f i rst released on October 7, 2008. It was a ‘closed beta’ game from April 10, 2009 to October 22, 2009. Closed beta versions of games are released to a restricted group of individuals for testing. Once the test was complete, LoL then transitioned to ‘open beta’

meaning that anyone could join. By July 2013, the game had been released and was distributed in Australia, the United States, Canada, Europe, Philippines, and South Korea.

Tencent Inc., China's largest tech company, has been in charge of the distribution of LoL in Asia. It has grown a user base of over 300 million users. In Europe, Riot Games has signed an international licensing partnership with GOA which help LOL separate from Europe.

LoL became so popular that in November 2011, R iot Games claimed that League of Legends had accumulated 32.5 million players, 11.5 million of whom play monthly, of which 4.2 million play daily. According to Riot in January 2014, the game had 27 million daily players, 7.5 million players at peak times, and 67 million active monthly players.

LoL gained a lot of popularity because of the gameplay and the game durations. One game usually lasts for 30 to 40 minutes

and no more than 70 minutes. This means you don't have to devote a lot of time for one particular game and still it is engaging and fun to return to play this game. The biggest attraction of LoL is that it is absolutely free to play. There is no part of the game or gameplay that requires any money. A player can achieve anything needed in the game without paying money. LoL has very engaging gameplay and can be played by anybody who understands the basics of the game. Each role in LoL has so many different things to offer that users can never learn everything.

As you see, League of Legends is highly appealing to many creative and intelligent people. Last year, the quarter-finals of the League of Legends World Championships were streamed live on BBC Three in the UK over three days. We will surely see this game grow from strength to strength. Besides, if a game is having its finals in the world-famous Staples Center in LA, why would it not become even more popular?

FangchuanWhere China, Russia, and the North Korea meet

a g r e e m e n t a n d e c o n o m i c development, with Jilin province publ ish ing p lans in 2015 to develop an international visa and duty-free tourist zone.

W i t h a b a r b e d w i r e f e n c e separating China and Russia, and the Tumen River keeping the DPRK and China apart, the area is nonetheless one of outstanding natural beauty and resources. Fangchuan is a national forest park and a leopard conservation area, and is also famous for its lakes, forests, rare plants and birds. Fangchuan scenic area is home to Shaqiu Park, Lianhua Park, the site of the Battle of Lake Khasan, Jingxin Wetlands, and Longshan Lake. There is a boundary tablet from 1886 put in place by Wu Tacheng, an envoy of the Qing government and a Tsarist Russian representative just a few kilometres from Fangchuan. Tour is ts can c l imb a near by watchtower to take in the view of three countries and cast a sight of the Sea of Japan. Transport links have improved greatly in recent years. Fangchuan is 50 miles to the south of the city of Huichun, the nearest city of any size – with 220,000 people it might just be the last place you can find a hotel before heading to Fangchuan. A high-speed railway line has been constructed

from Jilin to Hunchun, which can take you to Shenyang (capital of Liaoning province) or Vladivostock in four hours. Be warned that transport links to the scenic area are not great - buses take you only as far as Fangchuan Village; it’s a three kilometre walk further southeast to Fangchuan Scenic Area. Less happily, perhaps, the Tumen River has long been used as a route for refugees from the DPRK, most entering China as the Jilin border is less well guarded and with China’s larger Korean c o m m u n i t y a b l e t o p ro v i d e disguise and support.

If you are an adventurous traveller and want to try a location quite out of the ordinary, Fangchuan may be your ideal destination. Here’s a place which demonstrates how China’s development is spurring the same from its eastern neighbours, even following a less than harmonious history. And where else in China can you come so close to Russia and to the DPRK? Fangchuan is truly a unique location in the world.

China’s enormous land mass gives it the most borders of any nation, some fourteen

in total (namely, with I ndia , Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, K y r g y z s t a n , K a z a k h s t a n , Mongolia, Russia, North Korea, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, Bhutan a n d N e p a l ) . I f y o u ’ v e e v e r examined Google Maps, you’ll have noticed where China meets Kazakhstan, Russia and Mongolia, in what appears to be a four-way border in central Asia. But there is another three-nation confluence that’s perhaps less well remembered. In Jilin, China’s most nor theastern province, Russia, the DPRK and China meet at the Tumen River, just twenty miles from the Sea of Japan. The geography is unusual, with the Chinese section a narrow dagger thrusting downwards between the DPRK on the west and Russia on the east, with Fangchang

N o t s u r p r i s i n g l y, g i v e n t h e fractious relations between the three nations over the twentieth century, the history of the area is largely military. The 1938 Battle of Lake Khasan was the most notable conflict, being a two week battle between the Soviet Union and Japan in occupied Manchuria, resulting in the deaths of over 1,200 men. Fortunately, modern pr ior it ies have seen hostilities recede, leading to the area selected for international

More and more Chinese a r e h e a d i n g t o Vancouver. Richmond,

a city of 200,000 people within Greater Vancouver, is thought to be the first majority Chinese city outside of Asia, while immigration from the mainland increased by 88% between 1996 and 2006.

That’s the numbers. But why is Vancouver so alluring? It may have

“only” 600,000 people (or 1/40th the population of Shanghai), but Vancouver is perhaps the greatest achievement of North America. It combines stunning, and well-maintained, physical beauty with strong economic prowess; urban opportunities with open friendliness; and very high quality of life with an open-door policy. Where to begin? Vancouver is a coastal city and its harbour and

marina exemplify its charm. Many city harbours are industrial and utilitarian. Vancouver’s is simply gorgeous, though to be fair it is now more for pleasure boats or fishing tours than tankers or container ships. But the view as you walk along the boardwalk is intelligently beautiful, with snowcapped mountains in the distance and nearby steel-and-glass towers with enough space

Visiting VancouverThe Greatest City in North AmericaBy Mike Cormack

to let you breathe. Bayshore West Marina is further west, just by Stanley Park (see below). Here more yachts and boats are moored, giving an excellent view if you’re walking back from the park to the city centre or if you’re dining in one of the restaurants taking advantage of the beautiful view. The Change Dining & Bar (Denman Street, thechangedining.com) and Lift Bar & Grill (333 Menchions Mews, liftbarandgrill.com) are two to look out for.

Chinatown is more a tour ist centre than an active Chinese migrant hotbed, but it ’s st i l l worth a visit for the excellence of its restaurants (which retain a sense of authenticity), rather than catering to the untutored tastes of the outsider. The area is centred around Pender Street (with its large, traditional three-arched Chinese gate) , and is bordered by Hastings, Georgia, Gore, and Taylor Streets. It also has numerous traditional restaurants, markets, and souvenir and tea s h o p s , t h o u g h i t n o l o n g e r has the buzzing neon of other C h i n a tow n s ( ow i n g to l i g h t pollution regulations).

Vancouver is also blessed with many fine museums and galleries. The largest is Vancouver At Gallery (750 Hornby Street, vanartgallery.bc.ca), which has over 10,000 permanent items, with a fine collection of 17th century Dutch painters, while the Contemporary Art Gallery (555 Nelson Street, contemporaryartgallery.ca), is dedicated to the up-and-coming artist.

O u t d o o r s y t y p e s w i l l f e e l especially at home in Vancouver. Stanley Park, in the north-west peninsula, is one of the city ’s glories, with 1,000 acres of paths through still-thick forest, amidst trees standing up to 250 feet (75 metres) high. As well as forest trails, beaches, lakes, children's p l a y a r e a s , t h e p a r k b o a s t s Vancouver Aquarium and the Seawall (a man-made defense around the park ’s per imeter against the encroaching sea, which doubles as a highly popular walking and cycle route). Stanley Park was named the “top park in the whole world” by TripAdvisor in 2014 – a claim that seems hard to refute. And beyond the urban centre, Vancouver has so many hiking, camping, and biking trails that you could spend a lifetime exploring them all. Whitewater-rafting, parasailing, kiteboarding, snowmobiling – the question is more about how adventurous you are. Slightly further afield, t h e f a m o u s W h i s t l e r s k i i n g and snowboarding resort is 90 minutes away. (Did you know that Windows XP was code-named Whistler, due to its popularity with Microsoft staff?)

But this is all barely scratching the surface of Vancouver. There are botanical gardens, the historic Gastown, Queen Elizabeth Park, the nightlife centre of Granville E nte r t a i n m e nt D i s t r i c t , K i t s Beach... and much, much more besides. And somehow Canada has a reputation for being boring! Maybe that’s just what, in our arrogance, we call the nearest thing to perfection.

Gemini (5.21 – 6.20)With the coming of June, all setbacks will pass for Taurus. The Stars are finally in the right position and many things will change. When it comes to work, you will excel and expect progress

in your career. All you have to do is keep up the effort and maybe come up with new, original ideas to solve your problems.

Aries (3.21 – 4.19)

All Aries should have their eyes wide open. Interesting events await you and you don’t want to miss them. When it comes to

relationships, you will be successful as well. You will enjoy many warm evenings full of flirting or tender moments.

Taurus (4.20 – 5.20)With the coming of June, all setbacks will pass for Taurus. The Stars are finally in the right position and many things will change. When it comes to work, you will excel and

expect progress in your career.

Cancer (6.21 – 7.22)Problems will need to be solved this June when it comes to relationships as well as work. This situation can shake your world a

bit; after all, Cancer has a sensitive and emotionally based nature.

Leo (7.23 – 8:22)You will probably have to say goodbye to planning your vacation. Neglected work needs to be caught up on as soon as

possible. You don’t want to fall behind in the competition with your diligent colleagues. Hard work awaits you. On the other hand, Leo will gain many precious experiences and information this June.

Virgo (8.23 – 9.22)Single Virgos can finally meet their soul-mates during this time. A successful month awaits you, especially when it comes to your personal

and intimate life. Head into the world, the streets, smile, laugh and flirt but remember to keep your eyes wide open.

Libra (9.23 – 10.22)With June you will start to look forward to the summer months, no wonder. The biggest crises are overcome and you will

find peace and optimism again. Libras will have more free time to attend to their favourite activities, once they learn to properly and efficiently manage their work pace.

Scorpio (10.23 – 11.21)Scorpio will continue to be successful in their career in June. You manage to transfer that good mood into your personal life. It is

there that the stars will favour, especially the single ones this month. You will make acquaintances with potential partners easily.

Sagittarius (11.22 – 12. 21)In June try to avoid fights at any cost. The only thing that would happen is that you will start to open older disputes and both

sides will end up upset. Also think about your body. For too long Sagittarius paid attention to only work and didn’t have free time for sports. Fix it.

Capricorn (12.22 – 1.19)In June you should show everybody how essential you are to the company. Only this way can Capricorn get their well-deserved

reward. Just don’t be too mean. Your conscience will be your guide. Don’t neglect your partner, he/she might not understand why you spend so much time at work.

Aquarius (1.20 – 2.18)The Single Aquarius will really enjoy this period. You will meet a lot of interesting people, even potential partners. Those who’ve

already found their luck in love will enjoy harmonic times in their relationships. Mutual interplay and peace will make you happy.

Pisces (2.19 – 3.20)June promises positive waves in the area of personal relationships. This period you will have the highest chance of meeting your

ideal partner. There are only a few of these special people in the world so have your eyes wide open. Don’t let the opportunity slip through your fingers. Opportunities such as these might not come again.
