In the morning we jump on a bus and go to the skating rink to have some fun with friends for a price either of $7 for the skates or $5 for helmets. Thank-you to the Ministry of Education Outdoor Education Fund for paying for the rink rental and buses. We leave at the time school would normally start and skate with our friends. When we get to the rink, everyone straps on their skates and slips on their gloves and hit the ice for a few hours of fun and when we get cold, you can get a free cup of hot chocolate whenever you want it. When the skate is over we hop back on the bus to return back to the school in time for our pizza lunch. Everyone would have had a great time skating with their friends and enjoying a great physical activity. SKI TRIPOn February 22nd, many Green Glade students woke up at 5:30 am to join the ski trip at Mount Saint Louis. From the get go, the trip was a blast! The bus trip was about an hour and 40 minutes but it was totally

worth it. The sunrise was magnificent. The warm temperature and beautiful great hills, all contributed to make a perfect skiing day. It was a great day to bond with others, and even make some new friends on the ski lifts! To make things better, there were no injuries, and everyone came home in one tired piece. There was a lot of positive feedback from students, and they had learned a lot from their experience in Mount Saint Louis. The instructors were friendly and helpful, and always gave the right advice. Overall, the trip was spectacular, and a wonderful learning experience for many. Last but not least, we would like to thank Mr. Adamson, Ms. Garcia -Rosi, Mr. Harmelink, Mr. Burrow, Ms. Simoes, Mr. Porter, Ms. Jopling, Ms. Manente, Ms. Reford and Ms. Cirovic whom not only woke up with us at 5:30 in the morning, but who also organized this highly successful trip. On behalf of us all, thank you for a great day. By: Harmony 7-5

and support that our family gives us and how much we loved them back.Even though there are many great activities to do on Family Day, it is hard to find an activity that is not very costly, fun and that the whole family will enjoy. The key is to have a positive attitude and make the best out of everything. Every moment in life counts and the best moments are free. On family day enjoy hugs, smiles laughter and great memories. Here are some fun, easy, inexpensive, fun experiences you could try next Family Day or anytime.Cook a family meal instead of doing it on your own tonight, gather your family and give them some easy jobs. Why not even teach them your favourite recipe. Another idea could be to play a board game. Bring out that old board game and get your game on to win but, still have fun! Since Family Day is in February, you could have a fun day outside. You could play with snow, go for a skate or just take a walk and, after that you could have a warm cup of hot chocolate. Lastly how about going through some old family photos and creating a scrapbook.. Have a laugh and a cuddle as you remember the old days. It’s great because you remember memories and make new ones at the same time!In Ontario we are grateful to have such a holiday since 2008 that reminds us of the greatest treasures in our life, our family. Take the time and bond together for they are the reason of your happiness. If you stayed home or had a day out, I hope you did what matters most on Family Day loved your special family.. Maybe next year on Family Day, if you are stumped on what do, these ideas may come in handyBy Abeer 7-2

THE MARCH EQUINOX The March Equinox – Science Studies

What is an equinox? The word originates from the old French term equinoxe, and marks the date of an interesting solar

event that only happens twice a year, once in mid to late March and once in mid to late September. This year’s equinoxes fall on March 20th and September 22nd.

The equinoxes are the only two days in the year with equal day and night. In the winter, for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, we experience long nights and short days, while those who live in the Southern Hemisphere

enjoy long days and short nights. Then in the summer, the roles are reversed and we have long lasting daylight in the winter and short summer nights, while those across the world experience short winter days and long summer sun.

Try running around a central point in a room. Now try spinning while you rotate around that central point. Now try spinning and rotating around that central point at a 23.5 degree angle. Well of course you cannot do that without falling, but that is how the Earth rotates around the sun. This means that the sun’s rays are shining more on the equator and less on the poles. That is why countries close to the equator are a lot hotter than, say, the North Pole.

Where did all this information come from? Well, the science of the equinox was a discovery, like Isaac Newton’s

discovery of gravity, as opposed to an invention, like the light bulb. Because the equinox was always there, nobody realized it until in 127 BC, the Greek astronomer and mathematician Hipparchus of Rhodes did. He figured out the science behind the equinox and explained it to the world.

Today, the equinox is still not a well-known event but it is a mark of happiness- longer days and shorter nights from now on!- or sadness – here comes early nightfall and late sunrises – twice every year. It marks an important event that would not occur without the correlation of the Sun and the Earth. So while you’re waiting for the next solar eclipse to occur in 2017, you can wait for the equinox and explain the science behind it to all your friends. After all, it only happens twice a year!By: Serena 8-2

WINIT ASSEMBLYWinits…WINits…WINITS!!!! It was that wonderful time of the GREEN GLADE S.P. school year, when everybody from the school, would gather together and celebrate our achievements. As we all gathered in the gym, everybody was excited to receive their

winits. Music was playing, there was laughter in the air, and it was perfect. It certainly was nice to high five the teachers when we got called up to receive winits. Another amazing

There were so many winit awards such, as basketball teams, choir, backstage crew, volleyball team, intermural, backstage crew, Remembrance Day performers, Student Council and so on. SPEECHES & PUBLIC SPEAKINGIt’s that time of the year Green Glade. The

time where mirrors become your best friend and where you begin to look at those stuffed animals of yours as your brand new audience.

That’s right gators; it’s almost the commencement of speech-writing and public speaking! Personally, I have always adored that moment every year where students are

able to face their fears and they have the opportunity to speak overpoweringly about

topics that we are all truly passionate about. As an 7th grader, last year, I had the

opportunity to witness my fellow classmates perform in front of the school and our prestigious panel of judges who have

experienced quite a few moments of public speaking themselves. However, for new students who haven’t had the incredible

opportunity of writing and performing speeches, I am about to share with you how

this thrilling process works. You first begin by choosing a topic for you speech. Whether it’s persuasive or not, you must be able to offer a high degree of knowledge and understanding about this specific topic. Luckily, the Green

Glade teachers are excellent in helping prepare student in the argumentative writing

process. They allow them to grow in their writing and to have the courage to embrace it in front of their fellow classmates. Normally, teachers begin presenting speeches in the

month of April. After each student has performed, the class at hand will have a chance to choose the student whom they

believe to have 1) the greatest writing ability and 2) the talent to speak with confidence in

front of not only their class, as well as the school. After the speaker is chosen, the winner of each classroom will have the

chance to display their talents in front of their school in the school wide competition. A

winner will then be chosen by incredible staff judges who will fairly choose the best public speaker in the school. The winner does not

necessarily have to be in the 8th grade. In fact for many years students in all three years have had the opportunity to win. It may

seem like a long process, but I promise that this will be such an incredible experience to

each and every one of our Green Glade students. If, unfortunately, a student does not

win, don’t let that ever bring you down, but build you back up. Let that encourage you to

do even better next time. Students are encouraged to have their speeches memorized and not to rely too much on cue cards, as a greater part of their marks will be on eye contact between the audiences. Not only that, having your speech memorized shows that you know and believe in all that you are saying. Be sure to make this as fun as possible because for me, it is exactly that. As John Ford said, “You can speak well, if your tongue can deliver the message of your heart. “ Be sure to write something that you feel strongly about, Green Glade because if you have the capability to influence, you can have the capability to change lives. So go ahead. Pick up your pencils and change lives!

KISS AND RIDEParents – if you are driving your child to school, please pull up to the extreme east end of the front driveway and have your son/daughter exit at that point. We need the co-operation of all parents on this as we have been finding that with long line ups of cars, the potential for accidents increases and our buses are being delayed as well. Please follow the directions of the teachers on duty at the front of the school.

Nature is incredible isn’t it? It has all kinds of pretty stuff, like animals, habitats, lakes and landscape..... But what if humans pollutes it, and do not keep it clean, do not

look after it or take good care of it? Right now, you might be saying to yourself, “Well it’s none of my business, someone else will do it, I don’t even live close to nature parks. ”

If everyone thinks like that, then who’s going to clean after the mess we made ourselves? Our school is close to a marsh, and the lake. Green Glade Senior Public School is located right beside the Rattray Marsh Conservation Area and Lake Ontario. The Rattray Marsh is an important part of our ecosystem, which means we really need to take good care of it. Here’s your chance to do your part. The Credit Valley Conservation Authority is holding an “Annual Spring Clean-Up” located in the Rattray Marsh Conservation Area on Saturday, April 9, from 9 A.M - 12. P.M. This 3 – hour event is held every single year, to help clean up the garbage in the Rattray Marsh. The Credit Valley Conservation Authority wants everyone to volunteer and to participate. You can join neighborhoods, wildlife enthusiasts, boy scouts, girl guides, politicians and more as we complete our annual spring clean up of the beautiful Rattray Marsh. All are welcome!Volunteers are asked to bring:

MARCH 17TH, 2016 ST. PATRICK’S DAY

When you start seeing pots of gold, leprechauns, the colour green, and shamrocks, you know Saint Patrick’s Day is right around the corner! While this day is widely celebrated throughout the world, do you know how it

came to be? St Patrick’s Day originated in Ireland and is celebrated to mark the death of the Christian missionary named Patrick. Patrick was born in the U.K where he was later captured and sent to Ireland as a slave. During that time, he became very religious.

Six years later, he escaped from Ireland and returned home back to his family. Later on,

he returned to Ireland as a missionary where he played a major role in converting the citizens of Ireland to Christianity. It is said that St Patrick died on March 17th between 461 - 493.

The celebration of St. Patrick’s Day was introduced to Canada by Irish immigrants. It is a public holiday in Ireland. Although it is celebrated in the U.S, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, it is not an official holiday. On this day, people with Irish backgrounds or who are interested in Irish culture participate in parades, themed parties, and dancing. Traditional dishes are served at these events. So grab your top hat, wear lots of green, and go out to join the celebrations! By Michele 8-2

GETTING READY FOR GRADPita’s, cookies, fundraisers... grad’s just around the corner! Our Grad Committee has started selling pita’s and cookies, to raise money for the grade eight’s graduation coming up on Tuesday June 28, 2016 @ Cawthra Park S.S. I don’t know about you, but my time at Green Glade has been remarkable! We’ve made amazing memories and I know there’s more to come. I want my graduating closure to be just as wonderful as the memories I made along the way! Many students and the committee have been working hard to make that happen. Our ultimate goal is to raise $5000 to make our grad as memorable and amazing as possible. The grade eights are trying incredibly hard to raise money to make their graduation experience as memorable as possible. We are pleased to say that we are already half way there – cue “livin’ on a prayer”! Many students have been bringing in a $50.00 donation, getting their parents to volunteer, or helping out with fundraisers. We would also like to thank the grade sixes and sevens for purchasing food which proceeds will all go towards making our graduation better. Keep up the great work Gators! Remember, we deserve way more
