MUHARRAQOLD AND NEW
Muharraq (trans. Place of Ashes) island is the second largest island in Bahrain’s archipelago and takes its name from Muharraq city, the former capital of Bahrain until 1932, when it was replaced by the city of Manama. Very early on in its history Muharraq had become a centre of Christianity and the names of several of Muharraq’s villages today reflect this legacy, with Al-Dair meaning ‘the monastery’ and Qalali meaning a ‘monk’s cloisters’. The city’s port was a major trading hub and at one time there were 700 dhows working in the earliest large-scale industry for Bahrain, pearl diving. In order to protect their waters, Arad Fort was built on the 15th century, still a landmark to this day and used as a venue for cultural performances. Muharraq is known for several firsts, most notably being home to the first airport in the Gulf region.
Bu Maher Fort is located in the south of the city of Muharraq, and was first built during the Portuguese occupation of Bahrain. Renovation works on the fort commenced in the 1970’s, during which only some of it was rebuilt. In 2010, excavation works carried work at the site uncovered its original foundations and dimensions.
The fort represents the first step on Pearling Trail, which the BACA succeeded in inscribing as a World Heritage Site in 2012. A dedicated visitor centre was established next to the fort which houses an illustrated map of the Pearling Trail and models of the sites that can be found along the way.

Heritage Art & Culture
PEARLING “Pearling” may seem an unusual word but it suited almost every aspect of life on the islands of Bahrain for many centuries. The island society developed an economic, cultural and social system that was based on a singular source of income, a natural product of incomparable beauty: the pearls of Bahrain. While
During the pearl-diving season everybody had a role in harvesting the oyster beds, and later the collection and trade of the pearls. It was their role in pearling which defined income and social status and it was pearling that gave the Island its reputation all over the world. The unique story of pearling in Bahrain and its physical testimony in Muharraq is now listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage site.

In addition, the Dar Al Muharraq project comprises the transformation of the existing Dar Jinaa in the old city of Muharraq, as well as an extension onto a neighbouring plot, into a research centre for traditional folk music.
In the same context, BACA’s Heritage Preservation Advisor Dr. Alaa Al-Habashi said that they are deploying strenuous efforts to revive the unique character of Muharraq’s urban architecture, given that these features form a part of our collective memory and a source of our identity and pride. Examples of the projects include Sheikh Salman House, Al Hidaya Al Khalifiya boy’s school and the Al-Qaysariyah Souq restoration.

Mrs. Al Sayeh added that The Pearl Route, which is approximately 3km long, consists of 16 historical homes, three ‘hayrat’ (sea beds where oyster beds are found), two visitor centres and the conservation and rehabilitation of 15 historic monuments , as well as 18 open green public spaces.
Bahrain’s Authority for Culture & Antiquities’ Head of Architectural Affairs, Mrs. Noora Al Sayeh, has pointed out that The Pearl Route and its related projects received a major boost at the beginning of this year thanks to very generous funding from the Islamic Bank for Development (IBD). The project aims to revive the famous Bahraini pearl industry whilst documenting its valuable history.

Bahrain’s Economic Development Board (EDB) is known to support the growth and diversification of the Kingdom’s economy by attracting investors, and by enhancing competitiveness to a global standard. Chaired by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Prime Minister, the EDB focuses on sectors that capitalise on Bahrain’s competitive advantages, including Financial Services, Logistics and Transport, and Tourism and Leisure.
With the EDB recently predicting tourism receipts worth US$1 billion by 2020, Marhaba fil Bahrain sat down with Bahrain EDB’s Jerad Bachar, Executive Director – Business Development, Tourism and Leisure, to get his views on Bahrain’s tourism vision.

Bahrain was the first country in the Gulf to discovery oil (in 1930’s), making it a lucrative investment opportunity. What are the factors that make Bahrain an attractive investment destination in today’s competitive world?
Bahrain’s roots as an investment destination can be traced for centuries and that holds our foundation in the market. Strategic location with accessibility via air, water and land connection to the Middle East helps in attracting investors. We offer sustainability supported by a liberal business environment, from the government to the people, making the Island a total package as an investment destination.
Does the EDB consider tourism as an essential sector to attract investors to the Kingdom?
Tourism is of course a very essential sector, for any country, and this has applied to Bahrain since the beginning of the 20th century. EDB’s primary and secondary sub sectors are all about tourism - from hotels (accommodation), Leisure attractions, restaurants and more. The EDB has always worked closely with our colleagues in the Tourism Authority, now Bahrain Tourism and Exhibition Authority (BTEA) and those involved in the sector in general.
Primary Sub- Sectors:• Accommodation• Accessibility (Airlines)• Accessibility (Cruise Ship / Cruise Port)• Leisure Attractions• DMCs, PCOs, Sport & Leisure Events• Ground Transportation• Recreational Land Activities• Recreational Maritime Activities
Secondary Sub-Sectors:• Accessibility (Land/Causeway)• Convention and Exhibition Venues• Visitor Experience (TECH)• Sharing Economy Services• Restaurant / Food Service (Reactive)• Retail Outlets (Reactive)
25
What is the EDB’s short and long term plan for tourism in Bahrain?
We’re focusing on local and regional tourism that brings in retail, hotel and leisure which will create a chain reaction to the eight niche markets the EDB is focusing on. To share just some of the upcoming developments in the tourism landscape are the ten new hotel brands opening on the Island; for our retail perspective we have several shopping centres
under construction, including The Avenue and Oasis Mall in Juffair, and have recently opened Dragon Mall in Muharraq and Galleria in Zinj.
Several of the longer term developments that are correlated to EBD are the ongoing development of the Airport and the expansion of the Bahrain Exhibition Centre at Sakhir, near Bahrain International Circuit, allowing for an even bigger venue.
8 Niche markets for tourism which the EDB are targeting
1. Hospitality (hotels and serviced apartment hotels)2. Aviation3. Retail outlets / restaurants, foodservice4. Leisure and Entertainment5. Tour operators / Destination Management Companies6. Real Estate7. Cruise Line Industry8. MICE conventions and exhibitions

Describe the principal quality of concierge. The principal quality of concierge is to provide each guest with a genuine and customized experience whenever possible. Being prepared and having a “think-outside-the-box” attitude is also beneficial. Listening is very important, for only then do we know exactly what the guest wants. How do you resolve an issue of a dis-satisfied guest?
First, our apology should be sincerely felt by the guest. There is not one standard procedure to resolve dissatisfaction as each guest is different but every concierge or hotelier knows that no guest should leave unhappy. Our goal is to turn around the guest’s experience to a positive and memorable one.

Name: Jaffer Mansoor Ali Al AssoorBirthplace: BahrainEducation: Hotel Management in Baisan Institute of Hospitality Management
Who inspired your culinary journey? My mother was my inspiration. Every meal she served was filled with love and passion. I was very curious about every dish that was prepared and always questioned her about the dish and its preparation. Eventually she started asking me to help her out at the kitchen. This became a habit that turned to a passion which then led me to join the hospitality school which was the start of my culinary journey.
How did you polish your culinary skills? My first step was to learn the basics which I did at the Baisan Institute and my first steps into the hospitality industry was when I joined the Intercontinental Hotel Bahrain as a waiter. I cross
trained with various sections within the kitchen from butchery, cold kitchen to main kitchen not only gaining knowledge but simultaneously growing in my career as commis Chef when I moved to the main kitchen at Crowne Plaza Bahrain, where I trained under many executive chefs and was promoted as the Sous Chef and given the responsibility of individually handling our fine dining seafood restaurant, Waves. This truly was a very proud moment for me. Here, I had opportunity to further polish my skills by introducing various cuisines that included Arabic, Far Eastern and Continental.
When did your love for food start?During Ramadan, when we used to have large family gatherings, I was fascinated by the way people reacted to food. The utter happiness and joy that you see on peoples faces and how much it influences their mood got me thinking about how much of a difference my passion for food can bring to others.
The thought of my food making people happy after a hard day’s work got me to look at food in a different light, as a means to creating a lasting memory of times shared with friends, to excite peoples taste-buds and to introduce others to the flavours of various cultures and traditions. For me the dining experience is so much more than feeding the body, it is a means to enrich the soul...

A little bit of R & RAfter a long week, and with the weekend stretching ahead of you, it’s time to unwind and think of yourself for a change, to relax. What better way to do this than a spa break, either alone for some much needed peace, or with your BFF for a fun girly outing.
Spas are there to aid in your health and sense of well-being – whether you opt for a facial, a rejuvenating massage or one of their other treatments. I decided to try out one of the Island’s spas and let you know my findings.
How you’re greeted at the reception is often a good way of determining how the rest of your treatment is going to be. On entering the spa, I was given a warm greeting, asked to complete forms that stated my allergies (if any) and skin type – a definite must in order for the treatment to work effectively. I was then led to a lounge for the short wait until my therapist arrived to show me to my treatment room.
The walls are decorated with beautifully undulating dunes of sand, hinting at the spa’s name. Each room is named for a sea or beach theme, adding to the feeling that you’ve stepped into a summer beach vacation. Perfect for a spa situated on an island and surrounded by our wonderful ‘two seas’.
My room featured soft lighting and music, and my expert therapist provided a truly relaxing and rejuvenating treatment, customized specifically to my body type and preference. I left feeling renewed, not only in body, but also in soul.
My visit took me to the Rimal Spa, Mövenpick Hotel. Rimal is Arabic for ‘sand’, which is why there are those lovely, wavy sand dunes decorating the wall! 12 treatment rooms and 2 Turkish Hammam suites, ladies and gentlemen in separate areas. Open from 10am-10pm on weekdays, and 9am-11pm on weekends. Tel: +973 17 460000.

The United Kingdom and Bahrain have enjoyed a close and enduring friendship, dating back to 1820 when a treaty of protection was signed between the British government and the Sheikhs of Bahrain. In 1928, the Royal Air Force (RAF) began surveying the southern coast of the Arabian Gulf, where they established a number of airfields and flying boat bases. The cooperation between the RAF and the Sheikhs of Bahrain included granting the RAF use of the airfield at Manama, and later on in Muharraq once the new airspace was built. After 1932, Bahrain played a pivotal role for the RAF as a refueling
stop for both landplanes and flying boats on Imperial Airways routes to India.
Aviation has consistently played a major role in building and solidifying a strong partnership between the two countries since the dawn of flight in the early 20th century as the UK pioneered aviation technologies and Bahrain has been a constant supporter and adopter of this technology. For over 80 years, the RAF has played an active role in the defense of Bahrain. During World War II, the RAF undertook the defense of Bahrain while donations collected
from the people of Bahrain through public subscription contributed to the Gulf Fighter Funds, raising £50,000 which paid for ten spitfire aircraft operated by the RAF. An additional six aircraft were purchased using funds raised in Bahrain.
This exhibition celebrates the 200th anniversary of the close relations between the Kingdom of Bahrain and the United Kingdom. The display illustrates the shared aviation heritage of Bahrain and the UK and centers on an iconic World War II spitfire provided by the RAF Museum.

Eid al Fitr and Eid al-AdhaEid is an Arabic word that means ‘festival’, a celebration to mark two major holidays in Islam. Eid al Fitr (trans. Festival of Breaking of the Fast) is celebrated at the end of the Holy month of Ramadan, a month when Muslims fast during the daylight hours. Eid al Adha (trans. Festival of the Sacrifice) commemorates the Prophet Ibrahim’s (Abraham) willingness to sacrifice his son to God. These holidays are a time for spiritual enrichment, gift giving, extravagant meals and are shared with families, friends and anyone else who wants to join in!
The Eid holidays provide all residents of the Gulf countries with long public holidays, ranging from four to seven days. On the first day most commercial establishments are closed, allowing everyone to experience the festivities. It is also peak season for both in and out bound travel, with expats heading off for long weekends and Gulf nationals flying into Bahrain to visit family and friends.
MUST Know
Ramadan – the holy month of fasting from dawn to dusk, not only from food and water but from other earthly activities.

Iftar – the first meal after a whole day of fasting
Sohoor – the meal before dawn or prior to the full day of fasting
Ghabga – a festive gathering in the evenings of Ramadan can be compared as lunch during the night.

Gastronomy
In Japan, it is traditional for shop keepers to greet visitors with a cheerful “IRASHAIMASE”, a respectful way of welcoming people to their stores. It is with the same spirit that I welcome you here to Home Away From Home.
My name is Rosette, and I have lived in five different countries - and counting! I am a trailing spouse with my U.S. husband, a proud Momma to an energetic & witty five year old girl, and a multi-passionate woman. I love everything about culture, travel and food. I’m an educator, entrepreneur, online savvy and nature lover – yes, that’s me.
Now that we are acquainted and more about me below , it is my hope that you follow my future articles and join me in my adventures in enjoying life overseas and beyond!
What was your expectation before arriving in Bahrain? I expected Bahrain to have a very warm climate, cloudless skies, and a place rich in ancient history that is worth exploring.
Favorite places in Bahrain:
• Al Areen wildlife Park
• Shaikh Isa House in Muharraq
• Bahrain Fort
• A’ali Pottery Village
How do you find living in Bahrain?Living here in Bahrain is both imaginative and spontaneous while encountering and conquering surprise cultural challenges we are not familiar with coming from the United States of America.
Recommendation & welcome note for arriving families or single servicemen to Bahrain if possible address to general arriving expat. • My biggest advice to all newcomers here in Bahrain is, “Make
yourself an extrovert, even if you’re not.” Be open for adventure and excitement. Meet people outside your community. Make things happen or often they won’t. Feel privileged to walk and follow the pearling history of this island. Be open-minded, absorb, accept, and most of all learn. Become a student of Bahraini history and culture –not as a judge.
• If you can think positively, travel smartly, adapt well, and connect with the local culture, you’ll have a truly rich experience of living here in Bahrain.
