FOREWORD

First and foremost, CONGRATULATIONS! It gives me great pleasure to see innovative and productive teachers making a great effort to produce teaching materials to be used in the classroom. MAS is very much needed to help teachers to face the challenges in an LEP class.

The MAS module is aimed at students who are in the borderline of passing the exam. Teachers should seriously use this module to complement their teaching in the classroom. Therefore, I sincerely hope that the English teachers in Pasir Gudang will put the CD to good use.

Finally, congratulations also to the Pasir Gudang English Language Panel for providing the platform for this programme to materialise. Keep up the good work.

FOREWORD

English Language is one of the core subjects in the PMR and SPM that contributes to the overall performance of the state and schools. Focussed measures should be taken to help raise the standard of English in Pasir Gudang and emphasis needs to be given in improving the English language proficiency among students. The process of teaching and learning in the classroom ought to be given top priority especially in the PMR and SPM classes.

It is with this vision, that this MAS CD is specially designed to cater to the need of the low proficiency students in the PMR and SPM classes. This module aims to help students to be more prepared for the exam by providing them skills to explore each area in the English subject and giving them sufficient practice through exercises which present gradual development in difficulty and are exam-oriented.

It is hoped that this module will bring great benefit to the teachers in their teaching and learning process and to the students concerned in passing their exams. Congratulations to the English teachers in Pasir Gudang who are involved in this programme for contributing their expertise, time and effort in designing this module and to the Academic Unit of the Pasir Gudang District Education office for their support.

Bring Only Essential Items, Trainees Told

PETALING JAYA, Thurs:- All trainees have been told which camp they are supposed to report to for training. If there are any changes, only a small number would be affected.

Jewellery, cash and junk food are some of the things the 28,334 national service trainees will not be allowed to bring when they report at 41 camps on February 16. Other items barred from the camps include sharp weapons, alcoholic beverages, drugs, cigarettes, documents and illegal printed materials.

A National Service Training Department statement said it would issue clothing to be used during the training at camps and institutions of higher learning. Laundry services would be provided free of charge at the camps.

The statement said trainees should bring their own clothing for use after classes and during weekends. Such clothing should be sufficient for the duration of the programme.

Trainees should also bring their own personal hygiene items like soap and toothbrushes, as well as laundry soap and other necessary items.

When reporting, trainees who have applied to institutions of higher learning and have to attend scholarship and loan interviews are to produce a certified copy of their birth certificate, identity card and related certificates.

PMR PRACTICE 6

HUGE TREE THAT HAS LIVED 1,300 YEARS

The biggest chengal tree in the world is found right here in the jungle of Malaysia. The tree standing at 65 metres with a circumference of 16.7 metres, needs a total of 13 adults to ‘hug’ its trunk.

If it were to be chopped down (heaven forbids it), the tree would require 27 lorries to transport the timber worth some RM1 million. This is based on only 55 per cent of the tree volume as the rest are branches and other unusable parts.

Nonetheless, this 1,300 year old chengal tree (the age is based on its growth rings) is safe as it is located within the Pasir Raja Forest Reserve in Dungun, Terengganu. The State Forestry Department is keeping a close eye on the tree to ensure it comes to no harm. Pasir Raja Forest Reserve is a perfect setting for jungle trekking, nature walks, mountain climbing, swimming and relaxing

The chengal or Neobalanocarpus heimii is a straight pole, large hardwood found in Malaysia, southern Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines. It is highly resistant to decay when in ground contact or in persistently damp or poorly ventilated situations.

As such, the wood is used for boat building or wharfs and bridge construction. It is also good as railway sleepers, poles and piles.

1. How much of the tree can be used as timber?A. 25 per centB. 45 per centC. 55 per centD. 65 per cent

2. The phrase “keeping a close eye” refers toA. keeping one’s eyes closedB. watching the treeC. guarding the treeD. looking at the tree

3. What does the writer mean when he says that “the tree should come

to no harm”?A. No one should touch the treeB. No one should chop the tree downC. No one should scrape on the tree’s barkD. No one should say anything negative about the tree

4. Which of the following statements is true ?A. No human beings are allowed in the forestB. The forest is reserved for chopping timberC. No trees can be chopped down in this reserve D. No animals are allowed in the forest

5. The chengal tree species is generally found inA. ChinaB. AfricaC. South AsiaD. South East Asia

6. What qualities of the chengal make it suitable for building bridges?A. It is largeB. It is straightC. It is a type of spongeD. It can withstand dampness

Sample Answer:Watching television has proven beneficial by research. TV is an interactive

channel that develops in children’s social and communicative skills. They become easy going, open and they find it easy to talk to others. It also develops their listening skills, exposes them to different cultures and educates them.

43

Watching television is sometimes thought to be unhealthy for children but research has shown otherwise. It has been proven that TV is an interactive channel that encourages children to inculcate their social and communicative skills. By watching television, they become more easy-going, open and they find it easy to communicate with other people. Television also helps to develop their language abilities through certain programmes. Moreover, it also develops their listening skills, exposes them to different cultures, educates them about science and technology and keeps them in touch with social and sport news. It also keeps them from being bored and away from unhealthy activities outside their homes. Clearly, it has plenty to offer to our children. It is a waste of resources if parents deprive them of watching television.

Pollution is a serious problem facing the world today. Our air, water and land are being polluted every day.

Air pollution is caused by smoke given out by motor vehicles and factories. This smoke dirties the air and causes eye problems. We may also suffer from breathing problems because of the polluted air which contains less oxygen.

Water pollution is the result of factories dumping toxic wastes into the rivers and seas. Oil spills from tankers also cause the seas and oceans to become polluted. This polluted water has killed many fish and sea animals.

Land pollution is caused by the dumping of rubbish all over the place. Pests such as rats, flies, mosquitoes and cockroaches are attracted to these dumping grounds. They breed and then spread many kinds of diseases.

Therefore, we should be careful not to pollute our air, water and land because pollution can cause a lot of problems.

Read the passage below and complete the mind map with the main idea of each paragraph.

45Good Eating Habits

Food is essential for every living thing. We must have good eating habits in order to stay healthy. Having good eating habits is not something difficult to do. We must eat three main meals every day. We must have proper breakfast, lunch and dinner. Skipping meals will affect our stomach and may cause gastric problems.

We must include vegetables in our daily meals. Vegetables contain a lot of minerals and vitamins. It is best to eat vegetables raw or steamed. Overcooking vegetables will cause loss of vitamins and minerals.

We must drink six to eight glasses of water every day. It is better to drink mineral water rather than fizzy drinks. Fizzy drinks contain a lot of sugar and it is bad for health.

Avoid junk food as they contain harmful preservatives and colouring. Junk food also contains lots of salt.

It is easy to have your own herbal garden. First, you must plan your garden. Make sure that your garden has enough sunlight and proper drainage. Sunlight is important for plants to make their own food. Too much of water will be harmful for plants.

Next, prepare the herbal bed. You have to dig the soil to loosen it. You can add fertilisers to enrich the soil. Adding compost to the soil is a good way to enrich it. After that, you are ready to plant your herbs. When you have planted the herbs, label the rows so that you will know the types of herbs you have planted.

You must take care of your herbs so that they can grow healthily . Water your herbs regularly. Weed your herbal garden by pulling out the weed regularly. You can harvest your herbs once they are ready.

Trees are very important for us. They provide shade. In fact, trees planted around our homes help reduce cooling costs. The air we breathe is improved by the presence of trees. In order to feed themselves, trees absorb harmful chemicals such as carbon monoxide and in turn give off oxygen. They also filter and trap pollutants such as smoke, dust and ash, making our air cleaner. Where water is concerned, trees not only absorb water and prevent flooding , but they also help disperse rainfall over a more even area. On a larger scale, trees maintain our global environment in ways that we are just beginning to understand. Trees absorb massive amount of carbon dioxide from our atmosphere. Sometimes people find it difficult to sleep. This is called insomnia. There are some things you can do to overcome this problem. You could write in a journal before you go to bed. This practice clears your mind so too many thoughts will not crowd your brain when you are trying to sleep. You should sleep in a dark, comfortable room. Light sends signals to your body that it is time to be awake, so you should avoid bright lights at night. Also, being hot and sweaty or shivering from the cold can easily keep you awake.

Many people sleep with a pet. However, your lovable pet could be keeping you awake with its noise or movement. You should avoid drinking any caffeinated beverages after five o’clock in the evening. Caffeine is a stimulant and might keep you awake. You should never exercise a couple of hours before you plan to go to sleep. Exercise earlier in the day.

Once you are lying in bed, you could do peaceful mind exercises. Try counting backwards from 100 with your eyes closed.

Tea is one of the most popular beverages in today's world. Tea drinking is an almost universal enjoyment. It is also a special custom in some societies such as the Chinese and the Japanese.

Tea, together with coffee, is the cheapest drink, next to water. It is also a versatile drink which can be prepared in many ways. Teh tarik is a popular Malaysian drink. It is a mixture of tea, sugar and condensed milk. There are also other tea preparations which involve adding honey, lemon, milk, butter and mint.

When the body is overheated, drinking tea has a cooling effect. Likewise, in cold climates, tea helps keep the body warm. It is a good regulator of body heat and blood pressure. Tea helps keep one awake. In fact, drinking too much tea can cause sleeplessness.

Tea contains catechins, a type of antioxidant which cleanses our blood. It also contains theanine and chloride. The latter is good for cleaning our teeth. Tea contains no carbohydrates, fat or proteins. It, however, contains vitamins C, E and K.

reflected in it. She loves it so much that she always talks to it as she cleans it or

cooks with it. She also talks to her tin-opener, of course, and also to her kettle and

MR NOBODY

AUTHOR : UNKNOWN

I know a funny little man,

As quiet as a mouse,

Who does the mischief that is done

In everybody's house!

There's no one ever sees his face,

And yet we all agree

That every plate we break was

cracked

By Mr. Nobody.

`Tis he who always tears our books,

Who leaves the door ajar,

He pulls the buttons from our shirts,

And scatters pine afar;

That squeaking door will always

squeak,

For, prithee, don't you see,

We leave the oiling to be done

By Mr. Nobody.

He puts damp wood upon the fire,

That kettles cannot boil;

His are the feet that bring in mud,

And all the carpets soil.

The papers always are mislaid,

Who had them last but he?

There’s no one tosses them about

But Mr. Nobody.

The finger marks upon the door

By none of us are made;

We never leave the blinds unclosed,

To let the curtains fade.

The ink we never spill; the boots

That lying round you see

Are not our boots they all belong

To Mr. Nobody.

Set 4 – The Character That I Dislike

Task 4.1

Phileas was put into jail by Detective Fix when he returns to England. IMAGINE that

there is a secret number code to open the jail lock. Try to find the secret number

code by numbering the paragraphs below in a correct order.

139

Page 140: Mas Pmr 2012

Guess the secret number code to open Phileas’ jail lock.

Then, Fix follows Phileas everywhere and tries to sabotage their journey. For example, Fix makes sure that Passepartout is charged in a court in Calcutta.

When he arrives back in England, he arrests Phileas. This delays Phileas’ return.

The character that I dislike is Detective Fix. He is a detective hired by the Bank of England to catch the bank robber.

Thirdly, when they are in Hong Kong he tries to make Passepartout believes that Phileas is a robber.

When Passepartout does not believe him, he gets someone else to knock Passepartout. As a result, Fogg and Aouda are separated from Passepartout.

Firstly, I dislike him because he accuses Phileas of being a robber too quickly and unfairly.

Besides, Fix is also a materialistic man. On their way back to England from America, Fix keeps worrying about how little reward he might get.
