Our roster of festival performers begins with Spring Gulch. Two old favorites, John Gorka and Antje Duvekot, headline

this year’s event. Not to be overlooked, however, is the kick-ass band from Yonkers, Spuyten Duyvil. As Fordham radio

DJ John Platt said when they burst upon the scene a few years ago, “They’re the real deal.” Brother Sun, Beausoleil,

and Mary Gauthier are also great additions.

Muses in the Vineyard is a celebration of the women of folk music, thus, all female acts. We can’t quarrel with the choices of Red Molly, Amy Speace and superwoman Trina

Hamlin (we love her so).

It’s for certain that Delfest will attract the “creme de la creme” of bluegrass and folk. In addition to The Del McCoury Band, we take note of Tim O’Brien, Darrell

Scott, Bela Fleck paired with Abigail Washburn, and those Canadian barn-burners, The Duhks. Joe Craven is a

professor of the connectivity of roots music with every other style. We first saw Joe live at the 2013 Northeast Regional

Folk Alliance (NERFA) Conference and hope to see him more often here in the Northeast.

The Kerrville website provided a partial listing of featured performers. The names that jump out at us are Judy Collins,

John Flynn, Eliza Gilkyson and Dale Watson. Our first introduction to Dale was via his Truckin’ Sessions album.

It came as a surprise to learn that his father was the revered bluegrass legend, Doc Watson.

May 23-25 ~ GottaGetGon Folk FestivalSaratoga County Fairgrounds/Ballston Spa, NYwww.pickingandsinging.org/GGG_festival2x.htmMichael Jerome Browne • Gina Forsyth • The Murphy Beds (Jefferson Hamer and Eamon O’Leary) • Molly Andrews • New Folk; Hannah Rosen, MC • Alex Smith • The Irregulars (Vt) • South Carolina Broadcasters

At GottaGetGon, once again, we are unfamiliar with many of the names, but

can’t help being intrigued by the moniker, The Murphy Beds. We see that this is a

participatory festival where attendees who also play can jam with “official”

performers.

There are a bunch of tribute festivals throughout the summer at Warwick

Winery. The first one is always their tribute to Bob Dylan. We especially like

Rod MacDonald, The Kennedys and Bill Kirchen, but want to make sure that

nobody overlooks the brilliant fiddler E’lissa Jones and her band.

There’s a one-two punch of bluegrass and zydeco at Strawberry Park on

back-to-back weekends. At the bluegrass festival, there are some heavy hitters

like The Greencards and the Clair Lynch Band, who’ve been around awhile.

There are also some newer names like Sierra Hull, Cricket Tell the Weather and

our newest darlings, the Boxcar Lilies. Additionally, we see that Monica Rizzi, formerly of Tripping Lily, is here with a

new band, Old Kings Highway. Listeners may liken her singing to a cross between Mindy Smith and Alison Krauss. She’s a

marvelous fiddler as well.

A non-stop flow of groups will keep booties shakin’ at Warren Haynes’

Mountain Jam. Although Warren has stated that he’ll stop touring with the

Allman Brothers Band, they’re playing at this festival and we’ll bet the mortgage

that he’ll be sitting in. Derek Trucks, also an Allman Brothers Band member

(who’s also leaving), is here with his own group, the Tedeschi Trucks Band.

The “Tedeschi,” for the two or three people who didn’t already know, refers

to Derek’s guitar-slinging, singing wife, Susan. We’re intrigued by The Ghost of a

Saber Tooth Tiger, which features John Lennon’s son, Sean.

Steve Riley & The Mamou Playboys are the headliners at the Strawberry

Park Cajun zydeco festival, and there’s certainly no problem with that. There’s

Louisiana dripping off Jeffery Broussard and the Creole Cowboys as well. We

know a lot of people who travel many miles to dance to this music and we’re

sure that all these bands will make those miles worthwhile.

Things are going to get interesting, in an activist sort of way, at Roots on the

River with James McMurtry hosting. There may be no finer songwriter alive

who can castigate the corporate elite. We see that Heather Maloney and Caitlin

Canty have been included. If the festival organizers had been able to include

Darlingside, it would have been a trifecta, since both singers have close ties to this

fast-rising “string-rock” band. For the time being, however, the attendees will have to be content with the likes of The Bottle Rockets and Poor Old Shine. Not

too shabby.

The Telluride Bluegrass Festival is taking a back seat to no one in talent. There’s the re-formed Nickel Creek,

Del McCoury, The Lone Bellow, Steve Winwood (didn’t know he played

bluegrass, but who’s complaining? — not me), Leftover Salmon, Bela Fleck, Jerry

Douglas, Aoife O’Donovan … yikes! The talent alone will have the audience

gasping. In that thin mountain air, better bring your own oxygen.

Steve Lurie and his team have knocked it out of the park yet again at Clearwater

Festival. A bill that boasts the likes of Lucinda Williams, Rufus Wainwright and

Richard Thompson has become typical since Steve began booking this festival. We’re happy to see that the galvanizing

Josh Ritter has been invited back. While we’re using that word, let’s take notice of

Martin Sexton. That voice has dazzling folks for about two decades now. I should

probably be embarrassed to admit it, but this will be the first chance I’ll be getting to hear Jake Shimabukuro, live. It will be

interesting to see what Norah Jones has in store with her group, Puss ‘N’ Boots. This is an incredibly jam-packed roster, and it’s going to be tough to pick what stage to be

at during the two days.

There are a whole slew of Amidon family members once again at Old Songs Festival.

We’re only familiar with Sam, offspring of Peter and Mary Alice, whose songs are

contemporary but still have a traditional feel. If our old friend, guitar-slinger Brooks Williams, can show up here, why not Sam?

We’re not sure if this is the first time The Stray Birds are performing here, but we are

sure that their virtuosity is going to make them an instant favorite of this audience.

The organizers at the Great Blue Heron Music Festival show great acumen in

booking both Donna the Buffalo and The Horse Flies. Donna has shown the ability to induce a trance-like effect on revelers with a penchant for dancing while the music is

playing. It’s sort of a Grateful Dead-meets -bluegrass-meets-zydeco thing. We’ve seen

The Horse Flies have that effect as well. Although we’re unfamiliar with many of these bands, we like the sound of Plastic

Nebraska, Stewed Mulligan and Hindu Cowboys. Nobody’s getting bored at this

festival!

Caramoor has struck gold again this year, getting Rosanne Cash as a headliner. She’s got

a new album out that’s getting rave reviews and this show is going to mesmerize. The people

we like the most during the afternoon are Tony Trischka and Michael Daves, Miss Tess & the

Talkbacks, Joe Crookston, Cricket Tell the Weather and Spuyten Duyvil. I first heard Miss

Tess & the Talkbacks when American Roots organizer Maggie Landau presented them at

her summertime MadSq. series in Manhattan’s Madison Square Park. Having come of age during the era of the rockabilly explosion, I

was thrilled when Tess and her band perfectly replicated the rockabilly sound, sending me

back to the ’50s through a tear in the time warp.

There are a lot of Canadian names that are new to us (except Feist) at Mariposa, but

we’re glad to see that stalwart Americans Ani DiFranco, Dar Williams and Rosanne Cash

have made it into the mix.

We’re happy to welcome back a lot of old friends to New Bedford this year. Among these are Fast

Folk alumni Christine Lavin, John Gorka and Cliff Eberhardt; the father-and-son tandem of David and

Adrian Mowry known as Beaucoup Blue (David rips off some of the cleanest, most lyrical slide guitar licks we’ve ever heard); Pete and Maura Kennedy and Joe Crookston, all of whom write

anthemic songs that can provide uplift during these discouraging times; and Vance Gilbert, an

acquaintance since the mid-’90s, when his soaring vocals and outrageous humor won over vast

audiences. We’re disappointed, however, to see no mention of genre-bending fiddler extraordinaire

Jeremy Kittel, in attendance for the past two years. We hoped he’d be the heir apparent to the late,

sorely missed Johnny Cunningham, whose yearly appearances at New Bedford brought magic to the

proceedings. Oh, well… we can always hope for next year.

Winnipeg has a cavalcade of roots stars, such as Buffy Sainte-Marie, Joan Baez and Bonnie Raitt.

It’s quite a mix. Sarah Lee Guthrie & Johnny Irion provide lineage to folk royalty, while Amy Helm

does the same for roots-rock. We know James McMurtry will rock out, while Jake Shimabukuro shreds it on uke. Speaking of shredding, We hope The Bros. Landreth will be doing just that, even if

Sonny isn’t part of the act.

The Woody Guthrie Folk Festival has longtime participants Ellis Paul and Jimmy LaFave, while it

also brings in newer acts such as Rebecca Loebe. Since John Fullbright is an Okemah native (and

brilliant songwriter as well), it’s fitting that he “represent.”

Grey Fox is pretty much the “monster of the Northeast” when it comes to bluegrass festivals.

Many from Delfest are here: Tim O’Brien and Darrell Scott, Nickel Creek, The Deadly Gentlemen (whose banjo wizard, Greg Liszt,

started in Crooked Still), The Travelin’ McCourys and Del himself. His 75th birthday party is being called a “Delebration.” It’s nice to see that Aoife

O’Donovan, another Crooked Still alumna, has gained widespread fame as a solo act (while

fronting her own band).

July 19 ~ Huntington Folk Festival Chapin Rainbow Stage at Heckscher Park, Huntington, NY Prime Avenue and Main Street (Route 25A) www.fmsh.org/huntington-folk-festivalEvening show Headliner: Bobtown

Afternoon Program: 12 noon - 6pm Unplugged showcases and song swaps. Hosted by Acoustic Live in NYC and AcousticMusicScene.com.

We see a wide spectrum of performers at the Great South Bay Music Festival. There are

local and national touring acts, bands and solo acts, contemporary and retro. B.B. King and

the Fabulous Thunderbirds bring the retro, and we’ll take local heroes, Miles to Dayton, as a

representative of the contemporary scene.

Acoustic Live, along with Mike Kornfeld’s acousticmusicscene.com, will once again host afternoon showcases at the Huntington Folk

Festival. We cannot hope to outshine the evening headliner, Bobtown, but we’ll do our best to entertain.

Afternoon showcase acts scheduled to appear are: Acoustic Live in NYC: Chris Fuller, Mark Allen

Berube, Honor Finnegan, Jeremiah Birnbaum, The YaYas, Wool&Grant, Brad Cole, Marci Geller,

Paul Sachs, My Dad’s Truck, Gathering Time and Scott Wolfson & The Other Heroes

acousticmusicscene.com: Jeremiah Birnbaum, Emma Brooke, Christine

DeLeon, Honor Finnegan, Marci Geller, Loretta Hagen, Jenai Huff, Susan Kane, Judy Kass, Libby

Koch, Lisa Jane Lipkin, Alex Mallett, My Dad’s Truck, Eugene Ruffolo, Dylan Sneed, Toby Tobias, Robinson Treacher, Scott Wolfson & Other Heroes,

Wool&Grant and The YaYas

FloydFest cuts a wide swath through the musical landscape by including former Fugees lead singer

Lauryn Hill, Michael Franti and Spearhead, Robert Randolph & The Family Band, Ray

LaMontagne, Donna the Buffalo, Buddy Guy, Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite. No part of

the taste spectrum is left untouched.

There’s a seriously high level of musical choices again at Newport Folk Festival. We like seeing Ryan Adams, Jeff Tweedy and Conor Oberst in

the mix. We only recently got turned onto Hurray for the Riff Raff, with Alynda Lee Segarra. Online bio material from eMusic (Amanda

Petrusich) states that Alynda “ditched her home in the Bronx to hop a freight train bound for

California” and “criss-crossed America by rail before settling in New Orleans in the mid-2000s.” She then fell in with “the cabal of street musicians

who eventually became her backers” in the current band. Film rights, anyone?

The Gathering of the Vibes, held in my hometown, continues to pay tribute to the Grateful Dead in any number

of configurations. We’ve noted before that Donna the Buffalo can expertly weave a Dead-like trance into their set. Dark

Star Orchestra is always guaranteed to show up here. We’re not sure how Maceo Parker will fit in, but he’s welcome

anywhere. John Fogerty weaves his own trance with that new album, Wrote a Song for Everyone, pairing with people

like Dawes, Bob Seger and My Morning Jacket on old Creedence material.

We love all the Emerging Artist winners at Falcon Ridge: The Boxcar Lilies, Darlingside, Roosevelt Dime and Connor

Garvey. We never get tired of seeing The Duhks and Aoife O’Donovan, who are making the festival rounds. Tom Paxton

has been one of the greatest of the folksingers to come out of the ‘60s. He was in the vanguard of those writing their

own material. We got a kick out of seeing him referenced in the film, Inside Llewyn Davis. Acoustic Live in NYC will be

hosting unplugged showcases at our booth again. Scheduled to appear are:

Friday - Sorcha Cribben-Merrill, Gathering Time, Mark Allen Berube, Scott Wolfson & The Other Heroes, Heather Styka,

Jeremiah Birnbaum, Michael G. Ronstadt & Aaron Nathans, Brad Yoder Duo, The YaYas and My Dad’s Truck;

Saturday - Shawn Taylor, Phil Henry, Beth DeSombre, Heather Pierson, Spuyten Duyvil, Wool&Grant, Brad Cole,

Marci Geller, Friction Farm and Paul Sachs; Sunday - Tastes Like Blue, Zoe Mulford, Meg Braun,

Honor Finnegan and The Levins.

Warren Haynes reprises his “Wake Up” call from Mountain Jam at The Peach Music Festival. We’ve seen Taj Mahal

solo, so it’s going to be interesting to see what he does in a trio setting. It’s easy to see how The Wood Brothers fit in

here, but we’re guessing that the festival wants to push the envelope with George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic. We

have no problem with that.

The Philadelphia Folk Festival is presenting monster guitarist Tommy Emmanuel and our favorite dancing fiddler,

Natalie MacMaster — perhaps the finest to ever come out of Cape Breton. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen Hot Club of Cowtown, so we’re hoping they play on Saturday, usually our one day in attendance. We got to see The Lone

Bellow at Clearwater last year, and we’re also hoping to catch them again.

Rhythm & Roots has published a limited lineup at this point and we’re glad to see Steve Riley & The Mamou Playboys will make their usual appearance. We find it unusual that The Duhks

are hosting, as we’ve not perceived them to be in the Cajun or zydeco realm, but hey, they do French Canadian, so there should be no problem. We’ll be looking forward to Donna the Buffalo’s

25th Anniversary Bash. Hope to see you in Charlestown on Labor Day weekend!
