there will be an after party, or as most know it, ProGrad. ProGrad is a way to mingle with high school friends

one last time before it is time to part ways for college.

This year there are going to be many new changes for this event. One of the biggest changes is that the event will not be taking place on campus. The students were able to vote on where they would like to have their ProGrad and by a landslide, they decided to hold it at The Main Event located in Katy. The Main Event has twenty bowling lanes, over one hundred video games, laser tag, a casino, and a suspended ropes course. There will also be food, drinks, a coffee

bar, a tattoo artist, and a hypnotist. Not to mention, best of all, there will be a photo booth in which graduates can take pictures with all their friends. As always, there is a spectacular theme at this years’ Pro Grad and it will be a Casino theme. On June 8, the night will start off with the students arriving at Clements. From there they will be transported in buses to Katy, where The Main Event is located. The lock-in will last from 12 am to 6 am on June 9. It is a lock-in with food, drinks, games, and much more. There will also be prizes such as a 50 inch TV, an iPad, laptops, and much more. The students will get to put in raffl e tickets to see if they are the lucky winner. The raffl e tickets are earned by how many volunteer hours they worked.

MR. CHS

By BIANCA NAVIAReporter Chris Herzog, Mr. CHS 2012-2013, embodies the definition of success. In his four years at Clements, Herzog has joined a multitude of clubs, participated in several school functions, and has won achievements in both science and business. His determination, persistence, and boundless energy will no doubt take Herzog far in life. Herzog is the Vice-President of JETS science competition club. He has competed in the Science Olympiad Competition and has advanced to State three years in a row. In addition, Herzog competed in the TEAMS engineering competition. He and his team won first place in the Regional competition two years in a row. Herzog was also a member of the Clements Robotics Team in his sophomore and junior years. In his junior year, the team advanced to the State competition that

was held in Dallas. Herzog is a also member of the National Honor Society, National History Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, adn Student Council. He was also a National Merit Scholarship Finalist. Outside of school, Herzog has been involved with Boy Scouts since first grade. Herzog earned the prestigious Eagle ranking in August 2012. “I was given the opportunity to do many amazing things and share experiences with my friends that no one else could have at this age,” said Herzog. Herzog plans to major in computer engineering and has been accepted at both Duke and Texas A&M University. “I feel truly blessed to have such great friends and teachers here at Clements. Everyone who has affected me at some point in my life has supported me, and I thank everyone for that. I really could not have asked for a better experience,” said Herzog.

MS. CHS

By SAHAR BAIG Copy Editor This year the yearbook staff picked Kim Khoo as Ms. CHS for her extraordinary achievements. “I am beyond grateful and ecstatic to be nominated as Ms. CHS,” she said. “I really do love this school, what it represents, and what it has given to me.” Khoo is involved in a myriad of activities in school: Student Council, Orchestra, Music Honor Society, JETS, Science National Honor Society, DECA, Model UN, Students for Christ, International Club, and National Honor Society. Outside of school, she is a part of Generation Youth Humanitarian Organization and Messengers of Love Youth. Of her many achievements, the one she is most proud of was this year’s homecoming dance, which Student Council organized. “Along with NAHS and other students, we managed to put together decorations and a dance that we thought would be impossible to execute. The possibility of disappointing the school

weighed upon all of our shoulders,” she said. “But in the end, we managed to pull off what seemed so hard to accomplish. I am so proud of everyone who contributed and perservered.” She feels that Clements has prepared her well for adulthood. “I have learned so much from the people that I surrounded myself with. I am a better leader, speaker, and a better person overall,” she said. Khoo said that she will is looking forward to pursuing her goals. She plans to go to the University of Texas at Austin and major in biology as well as participate in the Business Foundations Program. After that, she would like to go medical school to follow her dream of becoming a doctor. “You can say all you want how much you hate Clements because it is such a pressure cooker, because it is so competitive, or because it is so difficult, but realize that there are people who would give anything to get the education that you are receiving.”

ByAMANDATHOMAS Reporter It is hard to maintain a friendship for a long period of time, especially if two friends are separated by graduation, college, and social life. It is up to each person in the friendship to fi nd time to talk to each other and hang out, even if they do not see each other often. The most important thing in maintaining a friendship is communication. It would be awkward to visit a school friend after months of no conversation. Old friends can feel unwanted and rejected due to a lack of communication. It is nice to call, video chat, or even email old friends while they are in a different place. The internet and other new technology can help an old friendship become strong again. Social networks are an easy way to keep in touch with people.

It is easy to log onto to Facebook or Twitter and chat with old classmates. Even if it is just one email a week, any amount of communication will help keep friendships strong. Visit friends every couple of months. Friendship is a mutual relationship and if one friend starts making more of an effort to hang out, the other will also try to communicate more. It can be hard juggling attending a new school and trying to keep in touch with long time friends, but just because new friendships are fun does not mean that it is okay to forget about old ones. To keep up a long distance friendship, writing a letter or sending a package to them can be very important. Many people would love it if their friend took the time to mail them something—even something as simple as a letter. If it turns out

Do high school friendships last?

well, two people could keep up a correspondence through letters for years. Communication and keeping in touch with old friends is the key to maintaining the same relationships. No matter what occurs and what life brings, remember: talking to old friends can help with life’s challenges.

By ZAHRA KHERAJReporter Many people think of sororities and fraternities as an excuse for college students to get together and party, but without actually being a part of one, it is hard to understand what they are really about. Whether or not to pledge to a fraternity or sorority is one of the big decisions students make once they start college, and joining a brother or sisterhood has a huge impact on the experiences gained through college. One of the biggest advantages of joining a fraternity or sorority is the relationships that are created within them. Being a part of a fraternity or sorority brings a sense of community and lets students fi nd others that they share things in common with. Not only are lifelong friendships made with those that are currently in the group, students can create connections with old

To Greek or not to Greekmembers that have graduated, which can be potential help for getting one step ahead once they enter the job market. A pledge to be committed to the group is required before a student can join, and there are also membership fees that can become and there are also membership fees that can become e x p e n s i v e . Housing is cheaper for members that decide to live in a fraternity or sorority h o u s e , w h i c h can be a big advantage for some. Not only do they pay less for living expenses but they also get to live with people they have things in common with. Community service is a huge part of being a part of a brother or sisterhood. The national Alpha Phi Omega fraternity posted on their website that one hundred and ninety of its members worked around one

thousand and fi ve hundred hours giving back to the community. A major concern many people have about Greek life are the ceremonies and the commonly heard of hazing stories. Hazing is what initiates a student into a fraternity or sorority and they are often humiliating routines for the new members. Although it is much rarer than it has been in the past, some groups still carry out the initiations. Nowadays, most colleges have banned hazing and if they realize that a group is degrading anyone, they are closed down or not recognized by the school. Before deciding to join a Greek life group, students have to make sure that it fi ts them and that they are willing to be committed to the group. It is necessary that the people in the brother or sister hood have good intentions to make the group a good experience.

News Flash: There’s no third floorBy DEVIKA SINGHCo-Editor-in-Chief My irst day of freshman year, I wandered the hallways desperately seeking my biology class when I ran to a senior who seemed willing to help. He kindly told me Mrs. Sparwasser’s room was towards the right on the third loor. Of all the things I have learned during my four years at Clements, the most important is that there is no third loor. I still cannot believe it is my time to write my goodbye. I have seen other senior staff ers bid farewell to their position as a high school journalist and though I am bereaved to leave behind

my years of endless homework and chipping wall paint, I am glad to be passing the magazine down to editors who will make this publication bloom. I want to send a great shout-out to Ms. Carroll and all my staff members who have made my journalism years genuinely memorable with all the food parties, stimulating brainstorming days and rush to meet deadlines. I walked into room 2812 bent on becoming an editor, but somewhere between becoming Co-Editor-in-Chief and turning this newspaper into a magazine, I got so much more of a journalism education than that

for which I had originally bargained. Clements has helped me to grow in ways I could not have fathomed four years ago and the friends I have made have become a family to me. We as a staff have stuck together even though we are each other’s toughest critics, when we are not too busy being our own. I suppose I should be feeling nostalgic

at this point about my high school career but although

there are indelible memories made these past four years, I

cannot wait to move forward. The Round Up will always work

Dear Clements, Through all of my trials and tribulations in high school, you have taught me how much hard work pays off, that procrastination is unavoidable, and that napping

isn’t just for kindergarteners. You have changed my life

for the better. My opportunities have been endless since

I fi rst got my acceptance letter to the Global L a n g u a g e s

Academy. When I

fi rst walked through the doors of Clements High School, I

was given the chance to be myself. At the time that’s all I realized, but

being four years older and having experienced much more, I realize that I have been given the opportunity

for a better life, one enriched with knowledge and love.

Although you have made high school more diffi cult than it would have been elsewhere, I can walk into college with a better understanding of hard work and a larger bank of vocabulary

words I don’t need. Most important of all, the people that I have met have forever shaped me as a person. My friends stand by my side and are always there when I need them. While we are all going our separate ways for college, we remain close and will continue to infl uence each other for years to come. My magazine class has also infl uenced me, more than any other

class I have had to take.

Sincerely,

Rebecca Plunkett

Ready to write life’s next chapterBy AQSA MUNIRAReporter I’ve always been clever with words, and more so with all things fi ctional than formal, or informal letters of goodbyes. I don’t like writing about myself, but this time I’m not. I’m writing about my time here. These words are my lasting legacy in this school. Aside from memories and maybe that occasional campus visit, I’m enraptured in these words. These are my last words before I jump from the nest and fl y. My time here has been alright; it has had its highs and lows, but as a teenager, the highs are brief yet constant, and the lows hit hard. But you’ve just got to wipe the dust off, and keep on keeping on. Some days you are going to be that quixotic fool drowning in the words of revolutionaries and some days you are going to fi nd yourself scowling

and reciting Nietzsche under your breath-- and that’s alright. Because when you are young, you think you know everything, and you are going to feel old and yet not very wise, because we’re teenagers. We’re built to go seek the Great Perhaps and get lost along the way. I’m grateful for the friends that I’ve made here. To all the fellow writers and readers, gamers and Whovians, study group bros, and fellow movie-goers, I really enjoyed the time I spent with you all. Early morning games of Lucky and morning cram sessions, we went through it all. These four years have been fi lled with hiking adventures and video game sessions Friday after school, inside jokes about fl ying buttresses and Doctor Who references in everything, failure SAT group study sessions, hanging around the kid’s section in Barnes & Nobles, trying

to fi nd the metaphor in duct tape and everything in between. We’ve invented silly sports and done stupid competitions and made plans we really ought to follow through, and the witty banter that we all do on the way to class. We’re nerdfi ghters made out of awesome and made out of wit, and we will never be too old for Peter Pan. What we’re doing is growing up. And it’s dumb and disheartening and exciting and scary, but that’s life. Yes, I’m scared and I’m stressed, but this is only a segment of my life. I hope the people I’ve grown close to will stay with me for a long while. This is just the end of one chapter of my life. And I’m grateful for the books I read, the people I met and the things I was taught that made me who I am, but there is so much more out there. There is a world out there to discover and I, for one, am excited for that fi rst step.

Au’revoir Clements...By ZAINAB DHANANILifestyles Editor Oh, Clements. What can I say about you? It’s been a true bitter-sweet relationship I’ve had with good ole’ CHS. I still remember my fi rst day of freshman year, coming from a private school with a graduating eighth grade class of twenty students. I remember anxiously entering the building on my fi rst day of school with my childhood best friend Stephanie, wearing a backpack that was frankly way too heavy for anyone’s fi rst day of school. From freshman to senior year, I can say that I will never, ever miss the many, and I mean many, all-nighters I’ve had, from juggling AP classes to SAT/ACT prep and extra-curriculars. I will never miss the countless college fairs and presentations I’ve attended, basically now having

memorized the various “college admission tips.” What I will miss is the hobby I have found in high school: writing. I will miss my fellow newspaper editors, eating out, annual secret santa Christmas party, and the life-long friendships I have made with my fellow journalism girls. I will miss Ms.Carroll and her warm nature towards us all- continuously encouraging me and advising me, allowing me to bloom into the young woman- and writer- I am today. My fondest memories of high school will always take me back to writing and editing for The Round Up, and the opportunities and gateways it opened up for me. I will forever cherish the new friendships I’ve made at Clements, as well as the ones I have retained since elementary school. Now, as my four years of French has taught me: Au’revoir Clements.
