The Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship was created in February 2009 as a joint initiative to grow the game by the Asia Pacific Golf Confederation, the Masters Tournament and The R&A. An invitation to play in the Masters Tournament and The Open is given to the winner, while the runner(s)-up gain a place in The Open Qualifying Series for The Open.
The 120-player field is annually comprised of the top male amateurs in the Asia-Pacific region invited from the 42 Asia Pacific Golf Confederation member organisations.
Korean Han Chang-won triumphed at the inaugural event in China in 2009, before Hideki Matsuyama won in his native Japan in 2010 and successfully defended his title in Singapore the following year.
At 14 years old, Guan Tianlang of China won the fourth edition of the event in 2012, while Lee Chang-woo from Korea claimed the title the next year in China.
Australian Antonio Murdaca became the next champion in 2014 at The Royal Melbourne Golf Club.
In 2015, China’s Jin Cheng fired a course-record eight-under 62 en route to winning the AAC at The Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club in Hong Kong.
2016 champion Curtis Luck of Australia, then the world’s second-ranked amateur, triumphed in the 2016 AAC with a bogey-free 67 and a one-stroke victory after starting the final round seven strokes behind the lead.
Lin Yuxin, at 17, became the third AAC champion from China after finishing with a birdie and eagle in the final round to win by three strokes at Royal Wellington Golf Club in New Zealand.
Last year, Takumi Kanaya followed in Matsuyama's footsteps when he became the second player from Japan to lift the trophy in Singapore at Sentosa Golf Club.

Qualification
The 11th edition of the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship will be held from September 26-29, at Sheshan International Golf Club in Shanghai, China.
The 2019 Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship (AAC) will have a maximum field of 120 male amateur players. The field will be selected by the following criteria:
1. Asia-Pacific Amateur Champions 2009-2018. Past Champions will be exempt for a five-year period from the year of their win provided they maintain their Amateur Status.
2. The first five and anyone tying for fifth place from the 2018 Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship will receive an automatic exemption into the 2019 AAC, provided they maintain their Amateur Status.
3. The top two ranked amateur players from each Asia Pacific Golf Confederation (APGC) Member Association, plus the top four ranked players from the host country, as ranked on the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) on 27 June 2019. If there is not a sufficient number of players ranked from a Member Association, that association may nominate a player(s) from their association with an established handicap of less than 5.4, subject to AAC approval, to fill up to two positions.
4. The remainder of the field will be filled by taking the next highest ranked players from APGC Member Associations from the WAGR on 27 June 2019. The maximum number of eligible players from any APGC Member Association will be six. The only exception is the host nation, which may have up to 10 participants.
5. If players from Conditions 1 and 2 above do not qualify under Conditions 3 and 4, these players will be included in the field in addition to the maximum number of eligible players from their country. If, however, they fall within the WAGR players from their country that qualifies under Conditions 3 and 4, their country will not receive additional invitations.
6. The AAC reserves the right, at its discretion, to invite additional players, or withdraw an invitation if the APGC is made aware of disciplinary matters or anti-doping sanctions concerning any player.
In its short history, the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship has seen the birth of some of the game's future heroes. We have celebrated the winners who went on to play in the Masters Tournament and The Open, as well as the runners-up who made it into The Open Qualifying Series. On the following pages we relive each of the championships in detail.

Japan’s Takumi Kanaya followed in the footsteps of his successful countryman Hideki Matsuyama when he captured the 10th Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship (AAC). Kanaya earned an invitation to the 2019 Masters Tournament and a place in The 148th Open at Royal Portrush.
The 20-year-old Kanaya, the highest-ranked Japanese player in the field at No. 22, shot a five-under-par 65 on the final day to finish at 13-under-par 267, two shots ahead of India’s Rayhan Thomas and compatriot and 2018 Asian Games gold medalist Keita Nakajima. As runners-up, both Thomas and Nakajima earned spots in The Open Qualifying Series.
After entering the final round two strokes behind defending champion Lin Yuxin, Kanaya set out to make up ground and played his first six holes in four under. When inclement weather hit, Kanaya wasn’t fazed by the suspension in play. Following the hour delay, he powered ahead of the field with three consecutive birdies starting at the 14th hole. After a bogey on the 17th, he went on to finish two strokes ahead of what had been a tight leader board throughout the day.
“This is simply like a dream. I have been dreaming of going to the Masters ever since I was a kid,” said Kanaya, who received a congratulatory call from Matsuyama, a two-time AAC champion and now a multiple PGA Tour winner, moments after winning the championship.
“I never expected to play the Masters and The Open so early in my career, so this is just huge.
“I played well throughout the day, but I think the key for me was how I kept my calm and composure during the round.”
Thomas , who played his last 54 holes in 15 under par, was disappointed with the four-over 74 start he had in the first round, which eventually made all the difference.
“One thing I definitely learned from this week is that you can’t win a championship of this level after starting with a four-over round,” said Thomas, who made only one bogey in his last 45 holes.
“Irrespective of my score, I loved every moment of this great championship, and I am glad that I have the chance to come back again next year knowing that I have the ability to win it.”
Nakajima, who fired four sub-par rounds, felt he was in the reckoning until he made a bogey on the 17th hole, but added that Kanaya’s play was a factor, too.
“I had a fantastic week. I thought I still had a chance coming in, but the three-putt bogey on the 17th was a turning point. And also, Takumi played so solid,” said Nakajima.
Venue Information
First opened in 1974, Sentosa Golf Club became the host of the Singapore Open in 2005, which is now the SMBC Singapore Open, as well as the HSBC Women’s Champions since 2012. The club is home to two golf courses and is located on the resort island of Sentosa, surrounded by scenic views of the Singapore Harbour and Singapore Straits.
Weather
Warm temperatures and afternoon storms were present throughout the championship. Temperatures ranged from 27 – 32 degrees Celsius. Lightning brought on by the afternoon storms caused suspensions in play during the third round for two hours early afternoon and just over an hour during the final round.

China’s Lin Yuxin won the ninth Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship at Royal Wellington Golf Club to secure spots in the 2018 Masters Tournament and The 147th Open at Carnoustie. In front of large crowds, the left-hander birdied the 17th hole and eagled 18 to card a six-under-par 65 and finish 14-under, three ahead of compatriot Andy Zhang, who was rewarded with a place in The Open Qualifying Series.
The Beijing-based Lin, who turned 17 on October 12, became the third Chinese player to win the championship following victories by Guan Tianlang in 2012, aged 14, and Jin Cheng, who was 17 when he won in 2015.
“I’m very, very happy I got the chance to win this event and play two majors,” said Lin, who trailed Zhang for much of the round. “I’m very proud of myself. It means a lot to me to play in the Masters and The Open next year.
“I was just trying to stay aggressive and hit as many drivers as I could. Even though I wasn’t playing that well for 12 holes, I still stuck with that plan. Andy is a very steady player, but I had to stay aggressive and get birdies.”
Lin started the day at eight under, one ahead of playing partners Min Woo Lee and Zhang, China’s top-ranked amateur. And it was Zhang, the 19-year-old sophomore at the University of Florida, who quickly took control with birdies at one and three to take the lead, which he held for much of the round.
Zhang doubled his lead with a birdie at 13, but Lin bounced back with a crucial birdie at the next hole. When Zhang bogeyed 15, the pair drew even at 11 under and remained level with two holes to play. That’s when Lin’s power game and self-confidence came into play.
The solidly built teen drove the green at the 361-yard, par-4 17th to set up a tap-in birdie. On the par-5 18th, he smashed his drive down the middle of the fairway then watched as his stunning five-iron from 216 yards landed just six feet from the flag, holing the putt for an eagle three and punching the air in victory.
“On 18, I was going to hit a four-iron because it was a bit into the wind, but then I thought it might roll over the green, so I hit a five. I thought it was a bit short but it turned out that it was pretty good.”
Zhang, who competed in the U.S. Open at the age of 14, was playing with Lin for the first time in competition and was full of praise for his younger compatriot.
“It shows you how good China is getting at golf,” Zhang explained. “The next generation is coming up and China will be a big country up there.”

Australia’s Curtis Luck, then the world’s second-ranked amateur, overcame a seven-stroke deficit to secure a one-shot victory over compatriot Brett Coletta at the eighth Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship held at Jack Nicklaus Golf Club. Luck, who had already earned berths in the Masters Tournament, U.S. Open and The 146th Open at Royal Birkdale in 2017 after winning the U.S. Amateur in August, carded a bogey-free 67 to finish at 12-under-par (276).
Luck, 20, was seven strokes behind Coletta at the start of the final day and had to shoot his lowest score of the week to clinch the AAC title in his second appearance, having made his debut in 2014.
“I’ve had an amazing year and this has topped it off,” said Luck who was part of the Australia team that won the World Amateur Team Championships in Mexico two weeks prior.
“I came here to try my best and win, but I wasn’t expecting to be standing here with the trophy at the end of the week. I’ve had a pretty good year and a couple of big wins in the past couple of months.”
Playing in the penultimate group, Luck birdied Nos. 2, 11, 12 and 15 and was playing the par-five 18th when he realised Coletta had drawn level with him following a chip-in birdie on 17. Luck had hit his second shot into a bunker, but splashed out to 15 feet and drained a curling birdie putt, following it up with an emotional fist pump.
“It was a pretty nerve-racking finish as I knew Brett could make birdie on 18, so fortunately for me he didn’t,” said Luck. “That bunker shot was probably one of the most nervous shots I’ve ever had to play, and the putt just topped it off. I left myself a bit of a swinging putt, but I had a really good feel for it.”
Venue Information
Jack Nicklaus Golf Club is located in Incheon, within the Songdo International Business District (IBD), 64 kms west of Seoul and offers views of modern high-rise buildings and natural scenery of the west coast. Before hosting the AAC for the first time in Korea, the course hosted a Champions Tour event, the Shinhan Donghae Open, the Chosunilbo-Posco Championship, the Korea Women’s Open and was the home of the 2015 Presidents Cup.
Weather
No weather delays. Light rain on Friday afternoon and evening preceded a cold front that brought cool, breezy and drier weather through the weekend. Sunday’s final round saw sunny and cool conditions with winds of 19-29 km/h and temperatures between 10-15 degrees Celsius.

Chinese No. 1-ranked amateur golfer Jin Cheng, of Beijing, was crowned champion of the 2015 Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship after high winds and heavy rainfall from a nearby typhoon forced the cancellation of the final round at The Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club in Hong Kong.
The first group teed off as scheduled at 6:40 a.m. with nine groups making it on course for the start of the fourth round. Play was subsequently suspended at 7:41 a.m. With conditions not improving by midday, Cheng, the 54-hole leader, became the winner over joint runners-up Ryan Ruffels and Cameron Davis of Australia.
Cheng opened the championship with a course-record eight-under 62 in the first round, followed by rounds of 68 and 69 to finish at 11-under 199 to earn an invitation to the 2016 Masters Tournament. His victory also secured his place in The Open Qualifying Series for The Open along with Davis and Ruffels, who each finished at 10 under par.
At 17 years old, Cheng managed to retain his place at the top of the leader board at the end of the third round thanks to a superbly judged chip at The Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club’s par-5 closing hole, from which he went on to secure a decisive birdie. With his win, Cheng became the second player from China to lift the AAC trophy following the triumph of Guan Tianlang in 2012.
“This win just came so fast and so sudden,” said Cheng. “I was ready for the round today, and unfortunately the weather didn’t work out, [but] it’s my pleasure to win this week. Going there [Augusta National Golf Club] next year is just amazing for me. I’m so excited and looking forward to it.”
Venue Information
The 2015 AAC marked the first time the championship was held in Hong Kong. The Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club is located in the New Territories and situated on a peninsula with stunning views of the South China Sea and Hong Kong. The golf course is divided into two parts: the Highland Nine and the Ocean Nine.
Weather
Inclement weather caused delays in play throughout the week - during the morning of the first round and briefly in the late afternoon of the third round. High winds and heavy rainfall due to a nearby typhoon also resulted in suspended play in the morning of the final round. When conditions did not improve by midday, the fourth round was ultimately cancelled.

Antonio Murdaca, of Adelaide, Australia, was crowned champion of the sixth annual Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship (AAC) at The Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Melbourne, Australia.
Murdaca became the first Australian to win the AAC since its inaugural event in 2009. He closed with a final-round one-under-par 71 that left him seven shots clear of the field, the largest winning margin in event history.
The 19-year-old’s win clinched him a spot in the 2015 Masters Tournament, in addition to The Open Qualifying Series for The Open, where runner-up Mikumu Horikawa of Japan also earned a spot.
After posting strong rounds of 69, 68 and 67, Murdaca saw his lead shrink to five shots through the front nine in the final round, with Horikawa gaining on him. It was the only time he felt any pressure, but Murdaca immediately responded with a 20-foot birdie on the par-4 10th. Two perfectly struck shots at the par-5 14th set up another birdie to get his advantage back to seven.
Murdaca, joined by his coach Gareth Jones on the bag as his caddie, made a string of pars to finish his round. By the time he hit the green in regulation on No. 18, he was prepared to acknowledge that he had won, and waved to the large crowd surrounding the green. Murdaca finished at 13-under-par 275 for the Championship.
"When I hit that shot, I felt some tingles down my spine,” Murdaca said of his final approach shot. “It’s a dream that’s come true for me now. I always wanted to play in the Masters and it’s so exciting now knowing I’ve got a spot in there, and also in the Qualifying Series for The Open at St Andrews.”
Venue Information
Established in 1891, Royal Melbourne is Australia’s oldest golf club and is one of the country’s premier golf venues. It has hosted prestigious events such as the Presidents Cup (1998, 2011), the World Cup (1959, 1970) and the Women’s Australian Open since 2012. The AAC was contested over Royal Melbourne’s original Composite Course, which was created in 1959 for the Canada Cup (now the World Cup). This setup consists of 12 holes from the West Course and six holes from the East Course.
Weather
No weather delays occurred throughout the week. The mornings were cool and windy with lows around 13 degrees Celsius and up to 29 km/h winds. Sunday was warm for the final round, with a high temperature of 26 degrees Celsius.

Lee Chang-woo claimed the fifth edition of the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship by three strokes at the Nanshan International Golf Club in Shandong province, China.
Lee became the second Korean to win the event after Han Chang-won won the inaugural event in 2009 at Mission Hills Golf Club in southern China.
With the victory, Lee clinched a spot in the 2014 Masters Tournament, in addition to The Open Qualifying Series for The Open, where he would be joined by runner-up Shohei Hasegawa of Japan.
After posting earlier rounds of 70, 72 and 69, Lee started the final day with a slender one-shot advantage over Zecheng Dou. After mixing two birdies and two bogeys over the front nine to turn in a level-par 36, he pulled away from the competition with a superb display of ball-striking that produced birdies at the 12th and 15th.
Although Lee played like a seasoned pro down the final stretch, he admitted to not being able to shed his nerves until his tee shot at the par-3 17th, which he struck to the heart of the green.
"I have been looking at the leader board since the third round and I was a bit nervous," said Lee. "I just tried to keep calm and it seemed to work. I knew I was going to win after the tee shot on the 17th hole."
Venue Information
Nanshan International Golf Club’s Garden Course is located in Longkou City in the northwest region of China’s Shandong province. The Garden Course is regarded as the most challenging of the six Nanshan International courses in Longkou City.
Weather
No weather delays with cold conditions in the mornings. Lows around nine degrees Celsius and up to 40 km/h winds in the first and second rounds gave way to a high temperature of 19 degrees Celsius on Sunday during the final round.

Opened 2005
Guan Tianlang became the youngest winner of the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship at 14 years old when he won the fourth edition of the event at Amata Spring Country Club.
A final round of one-under-par 71 gave the Chinese teenage sensation a 15-under total of 273 and a nail-biting one-stroke victory over Chinese Taipei’s Cheng-tsung Pan. After rounds of 66-64-72, Guan started the final day two shots ahead of his nearest challenger, Australian Oliver Goss, who eventually finished third. The 14-year-old began nervously and off-set his two birdies on Nos. 2 and 4 with two bogeys on the 7th and 9th. He picked up his game, however, on the back nine to fend off the challenge of Pan, who had a superb final-day 65 that included nine birdies.
Weighing just 125 lbs and averaging 250 yards per tee shot, he had found Amata Spring's 18th hole, a par-4 of more than 470 yards, a little tough going. Having bogeyed the hole twice in the first three rounds, Guan was under pressure to sink at least a par putt at the final hole to secure his win. He missed the green with his 3-wood second shot, then chipped to five feet with a 60-degree wedge. He used his belly putter, which he began using in June, to successfully sink the par putt, an effort that he admitted was a little nerve-racking.
“I had a great up-and-down on the last hole," Guan said. "I was a little bit nervous over the putt."
Guan became the first Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship winner from China.
Venue Information
Amata Spring Country Club has hosted numerous international events, including The Royal Trophy and the Thailand Golf Championship. These events have helped establish the notoriety and legacy of the course. In only a few short years, Amata Spring Country Club is now recognised as the preeminent facility in the country.
Weather
No weather delays. Sunny, fine and clear with an average temperature of 28 degrees Celsius.

Hideki Matsuyama won the third Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship with a superb final round 67 at The Singapore Island Country Club (SICC).
The 19-year-old defending champion, who won the title in his native Japan in 2010, collected five birdies in a bogey-free final round to finish 18 under par and one shot clear of South Korea’s Lee Soo-min. Victory provided a return for Matsuyama to the Masters Tournament at Augusta National, where he made history in April 2011 by becoming the first Asian golfer to win the Silver Cup for Low Amateur.
In Singapore, the Japanese star was never behind after the first hole but faced competition from Lee, who signed for the lowest score of the week after a birdie on the 18th hole secured a round of 64.
Overnight leader Ben Campbell also stayed in touch after recovering from a difficult start to shoot 70 and finish in third place at 16 under thanks to late birdies on Nos. 16 and 17. However, Matsuyama continued to hit fairways and greens and secured back-to-back wins with a tap-in par on the 605-yard 18th.
Admitting to feeling some nerves at the start of the back nine, he said: “To be honest, my feet started shaking, I was really nervous but I was happy that I was able to play my game even under that tremendous pressure. If you look at today and yesterday, I didn’t make any bogeys, so that was very encouraging for me.”
His final total of 270 consisted of rounds of 67-71-65-67 over The SICC’s New Course, which set the record for the lowest 72-hole score in the event’s history. He has also recorded a subpar score in every round he has played in the competition.
The Tohoku Fukushi University student continued his great form from the third round with birdies on Nos. 1, 8, 9, 12 and 16. A rare missed green on the 15th provided hope for his opponents, but a deft chip making full use of the green saw him make a comfortable par and stay one shot ahead of the field before going a further shot up at the next hole.
The top 12 was made up of players from Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Australia, Singapore and Malaysia. A total of 120 players from 35 countries began the championship, which had television coverage broadcast in 150 countries.
Venue Information
The Singapore Island Country Club, located about 10 kilometres from downtown Singapore, has an enviable reputation as a host of major international golf events, including the 1969 World Cup, 1993 Johnnie Walker Classic, 28 editions of the Singapore Open and the European Tour’s Singapore Masters in 2001.
Weather
A one hour weather delay occurred just 10 minutes after the first round started, though play was ultimately completed before darkness. Weather delayed the start of the second round by two hours, which meant 30 players were unable to finish on Friday. Morning storms delayed play again on Saturday, but the second and third rounds were completed by day’s end.

Hideki Matsuyama made sure of an invitation to Augusta National for the 2011 Masters Tournament, as well as a place in The Open Championship International Final Qualifying (IFQ), with his victory at the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship.
The 18-year-old from Ehime, Japan, signed for a four-under-par final round of 67 to finish five shots ahead of Australia’s Tarquin MacManus, who also earned an exemption into IFQ by virtue of his runner-up performance.
Matsuyama, whose caddie that week was a friend, class-mate and scratch-handicapper from Tohoku Fukushi University, emerged from a 118-man field, made up of competitors representing 27 different Asia Pacific Golf Confederation member nations, to claim the crown.
Eleven players from six nations finished tied for ninth or better. Four Japanese competitors formed over one third of that number, including Yusuke Asaji, who finished alone in third place at nine-under-par 275, five strokes ahead of Korea’s Lee Kyoung-Hoon and Ben Campbell of New Zealand.
“I’m very, very happy. I was under par for all four days and now I’m in the Masters, so that’s very exciting,” explained Matsuyama, who reached 15 under par with rounds of 68, 69, 65 – the lowest of the Championship – and 67. “I was extremely pleased to keep the bogeys off my card today; it’s harder to not make mistakes than to make birdies.”
Victory for Matsuyama, who became the first Japanese amateur to play in the Masters Tournament, seemed certain after a birdie on the 380-yard, par-4 14th hole, courtesy of a remarkable second shot from deep in the woods, which finished eight feet from the hole.
The shot was reminiscent of one played by Phil Mickelson on his way to winning the 2010 Masters Tournament. Matsuyama went on to play superbly at the 2011 Masters Tournament, finishing alongside Mickelson in a tie for 27th and winning the Silver Cup as Low Amateur.
Venue Information
The Kasumigaseki Country Club is located in Kawagoe City, Japan, one hour northwest of Tokyo in the historic Saitama Prefecture. The club has two 18-hole courses: the East and the West Courses, with the championship contested on the West Course.
Weather
No weather delays, although heavy rain fell during the third round when the temperature dropped to 17 degrees Celsius. The remaining three days were fine and clear with temperatures in the mid-20s.

Han Chang-won of Korea enjoyed the finest moment of his young golfing career when he booked a place at the 2010 Masters Tournament and International Final Qualifying for the 150th anniversary Open Championship at St Andrews with a dominant victory in the inaugural Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship in China.
Leading by two shots overnight, the 17-year-old earned a trip to Augusta National by crushing the competition with a final-round two-under-par 70 at Mission Hills Golf Club’s World Cup Course, located about 90 minutes north of Hong Kong.
Han finished with a 72-hole total of 276 (-12), five shots in front of compatriot and playing partner Eric Chun, who could only manage a 73. Chun would join his countryman in the final qualifying stage for the 2010 Open Championship.
Three players – Korea’s Kim Meen-whee, Peter Spearman-Burn of New Zealand and Jordan Sherratt from Australia – shared third at 282, with Australia’s Matthew Giles sixth, one shot further back at five-under-par 283.
In an indication of the depth of the field, seven different APGC member nations were represented in the top-10 places at the championship’s conclusion.
Understandably, Han was thrilled with the victory. “I knew I was leading by five or six after the first nine holes, but I was trying not to think about the result.
“Anything can happen in a round of golf and I was very nervous towards the end. I have to admit that it was the thought of playing in the Masters that made me nervous. I had never even thought it would be possible for me to be playing in the Masters as an amateur,” said Han.
Venue Information
The inaugural Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship was held at Mission Hills Golf Club’s World Cup Course in Shenzhen, China. Shenzhen is located in southern China’s Guangdong province, approximately 90 minutes north of Hong Kong.
Weather
No weather delays. Sunny and humid with highs each day reaching approximately 31 degrees Celsius.
