After a perfect December picnic with the fox and Bunny, a new

friend, Brownie Groundhog is ready to sleep in her cozy home until spring. The fl ustered fox wonders what he’ll do without her. “You can do wintry things,” Brownie reassures him, “Just don’t wake me up.” It isn’t long before the fox and a reluctant Bunny bother Brownie with a few quick questions and too much noise. Brownie grumbles through a string of interruptions, and by the time she blows her stack, the fox and Bunny have hatched a plan that surprises all of them. Brimming with good intentions, high-spirited mischief, and playful humor, this heartwarming story about friendship is written by Susan Blackaby and beautifully illustrated with Carmen Segovia’s irresistible art.

SUSAN BLACKABY is the author of numerous books for young readers, including Brownie Groundhog and the February Fox (praised in a starred review by School Library Journal as “particularly endearing . . . delightful”) and a poetry collection, Nest, Nook, and Cranny, which won the 2011 Lion and Unicorn Award for Excellence in North American Poetry. Susan lives in Oregon, where winter means wet wool, muddy paws, and a rosy glow on the slopes of Mount Hood.

CARMEN SEGOVIA lives in Barcelona, where it very rarely snows. One winter she was wishing she lived in a place where she could make snow angels and began sketching a little groundhog that wakes long before spring and passes the time by skating on a frozen lake, sledding down a hill, and building a snow friend. The paintings that resulted from these sketches were selected for the Bologna Children’s Book Fair Illustrators Exhibition. Carmen’s American editor saw the paintings and was determined that the little groundhog star in her own book. Susan Blackaby took up the challenge of writing a story to bring the character to life, resulting in Brownie Groundhog and the February Fox and now Brownie Groundhog and the Wintry Surprise. Carmen is the award-winning illustrator of numerous books for young readers in her native Spain.

BROWNIE GROUNDHOG FEBRUARY FOX

“. . . this story is particularly endearing. Children will fi nd it delightful.” —School Library Journal, starred review

“Blackaby is as tricky as her heroine, economically developing two distinct and likable characters and delivering plenty of chuckles and wordplay. Elegant.” —Kirkus Reviews

“. . . a wonderful story—a whiff of Aesop, a dash of Scheherazade and a bit of all right.” —Chicago Tribune

“Did she say ‘trumpet’?” The fox clapped. “A trumpet would be terrific.” “No,” said Bunny. “She said, ‘Let me sleep.’ She sounds kind of mad.” “Silly,” said the fox. “She’s not mad. She’s sleeping.” The fox jumbled in the cupboards, hunting and grunting. “Lucky us!” he said. “A hammer and a trumpet!”

“What’s this stuff for?” asked Bunny, loading up a wheelbarrow. “You’ll see,” said the fox. He waggled Brownie’s shoulder. “Excuse me,” he said. “Hammer?” Brownie sat up, groggy and foggy. “Bumble crumpet! Lemon sheep!”

Dark secrets and unrequited love follow a rags-to-riches young man in

Bound for a life as a lowly blacksmith, Philip “Pip” Pirrip desperately wants to impress beautiful Estella, the spoiled ward of Miss Havisham, a wealthy and bizarre woman. But Estella has a heart of stone, and she makes Pip miserable every time he visits her at Miss Havisham’s dreary old mansion. Then fate steps in: a secret benefactor sets Pip up as a well-to-do gentleman with a fanciful life in London. But something sinister from his past is lurking in the shadows. Will Pip thrive in his new life? Is Estella his true love and soul mate? And will Pip’s past forever haunt him?

was born on February 7, 1812, in Landport, Portsmouth, in Hampshire. The second of eight children, Dickens was pulled out of school at the age of twelve and forced to work at a local factory. In his early twenties he began to publish stories about London life in various periodicals, but it wasn’t until the publication of The Pickwick Papers in 1836 that he became well known. Dickens is now considered the most suc-cessful British author of the Victorian Age, having written such masterpieces as Great Expectations, A Tale of Two Cities, A Christmas Carol, and Oliver Twist.

Fashion illustrator splits her time between Manhattan’s Lower East Side and serene Stockholm, Sweden. Her illustrations have appeared in such prominent publications as Vogue, The New York Times, and House Beautiful and she has worked for designers like Givenchy, Tiffany, and Neiman Marcus.
