The Cour dOr Museum contains archaeological collections which tell the fascinating stor yof all the aspects of the everyday life and activities of a Roman town, as well a s the remainsof the Gallo-Roman thermal ba ths, Merovingian jewellery, the chancel of the St-Pierre-aux-Nonnains basilica, considered the finest ensemble of early medieval sculpture in France, su-perb Gothic painted timber ceilings It is a prelude to a Museum of Architecture coveringthe period from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance and a Museum of Fine Arts that willdelight art lovers.

An outstanding illustration of late 19th and early 20th centuryurban development, the Imperial Quarter features a synthesis ofhistorical and modern styles: Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissanceor Baroque, Art Deco and Jugendstil. The railway station, the focal point of the quarter, built by thearchitect Krger, is surprisingly large (300 metres long) and inthe neo-Romanesque style. Besides the sculptures glorifying theImperial regime, the stations illustrated capitals feature an asto-nishing gallery of scenes from everyday life (transport, social lawsin favour of railway workers, station services etc.).

To delight your taste buds, the Tables de Rabelais, symbol of local gastro-nomy and the Rabelaisian spirit in Metz and the surrounding area, offer ataste of a typically French art de vivre.Add to that nearby vineyards that have had their own AOC since 2010 andthe famous Lorraine mirabelle plums, which account for 70% of the worldssupply, and you will see why Metz is considered a gastronomic high spot.

2hrs Valentin Bousch: Light of the Renaissance at Metz Cathedral

The windows he created for St. Etiennes Cathedral, which havebeen preserved in their entirety, confirm that he was one ofthe greatest master stain glass artists of his time. The stained glassrecounts stories and history in a blaze of colour.
