HKSAR Chief Executive Visits MIcROSOfT HONG KONG

The Chief Executive, Mr. Donald Tsang, visited Microsoft Hong Kong on 27 April this year to keep abreast of its businesses in Hong Kong and the job opportunities they are bringing to young people. Mr. Tsang was briefed on the company’s operations as well as the latest technology trends including cloud computing, natural user interface and mobile Internet, which together can enable endless possibilities in using technology for a better quality of life.

“The presence of multinational corporations including Microsoft Hong Kong underlines the strengths and vibrancy of the Hong Kong economy. Apart from creating abundant high-value-added job opportunities, these companies bring in new management cultures, promote transfer of technology and enhance local creativity,” the Chief Executive said. “Local young people would benefit a great deal from these rewarding work experiences, which come with international exposure and great career prospects.”

“It is our honor to receive the Chief Executive and other senior government officials at our Hong Kong office,” said Simon Leung, Microsoft corporate vice president, chairman and CEO of Microsoft Greater China Region. “We are committed to being part of the driving force that is creating a positive impact on society, not only through technology innovations but also by nurturing local talent and supporting local partners as well as young entrepreneurs.”

At the 2011 NGO Day on 8 June, Microsoft launched a new community cloud initiative named Cloud Unlimited, which aims to meet the increasing information and communications technology (ICT) needs of the social service and education sectors with cloud computing. This first-of-its-kind cloud initiative was initially supported by 12 participating NGOs, schools and software developers in Hong Kong.

“Cloud computing gives NGOs and the education sector an unprecedented opportunity to clear the hurdle of resource pressure that has been holding them back from enjoying the productivity and efficiency benefits of IT,” said Peter Yeung, general manager of Microsoft Hong Kong. “Helping NGOs and schools to enhance their capabilities to better serve the community aligns with the mission of our corporate social responsibility.”

Christine Fang, chief executive of the Hong Kong Council of Social Service, said, “From allowing volunteers to access their office resources when out in the community, to enabling organizations to run their membership systems more effectively and better secure confidential information, the potential benefits of cloud computing for NGOs and their beneficiaries in Hong Kong are limited only by their imaginations.”

Microsoft Hong Kong

Mouse Mischief is a free add-in tool to PowerPoint 2010, enabling teachers to insert questions, polls and drawing activity slides into their lessons, and supports up to 25 mice at a time. With its benefits of low investment cost and minimal need for training, Salesian School has adopted this solution for use over a school term. “Mouse Mischief has achieved great success as it is easy to use and is applicable to all subjects. Now, in just five minutes teachers can prepare an entire curriculum. Equally importantly, it enables interactive learning, greater student participation and fruitful discussions in lessons,” said Mr. Andy Li, computer science subject officer of Salesian School.

Microsoft has given a donation of HK$3.7 million in cash and in-kind to NGOs in 2011-12. The funding is intended to improve the operation of six Community Technology Learning Centers (CTLCs) and to set up a new one at Ma On Shan. Run by NGOs, these centers provide IT training to enhance the employability of disadvantaged groups, and have thus far benefited some 600,000 people in Hong Kong.

Since its inception in June 2010, the Student Volunteers Program has been helping expand students’ horizons while enabling them to serve the community. Selected

high school students receive IT training and are assigned to Community Technology Learning Centers

to provide volunteer support, e.g. website development and serving as tutors for IT training courses. The

program is designed to meet the need of the New Senior Secondary curriculum, under which students are

required to participate in community service as part of the “Other Learning Experience”. Around 20 schools

and NGOs have participated in this Program, and Kwun Tong Government Secondary School was given “The

Most Supportive School Award” with the highest number of volunteering hours among the participating schools.

The Windows MultiPoint Server – a single computer that supports multiple users working independently using their own monitor, keyboard and mouse and with a familiar Windows computing experience – provides a simple way for more people to gain access to the latest technology. William Chan陳諾彬As the fastest selling computer electronics device of all time, Kinect represents the first incarnation of the next big thing in computing. This advanced motion sensing technology will enable new experiences for Natural User Interface beyond gaming and entertainment. William Chan, the general manager of Starwish Little Prince Studio Limited, which owns Starwish Little Prince brand and is an incubatee of the Microsoft BizSpark Program, used Kinect for Windows SDK Beta to develop an e-learning game which was showcased at the Learning & Teaching Expo in June. Education Bureau officials enjoyed the game, using their hands to grab Chinese characters with the same radicals. Chan’s company also attracted much public attention with this motion sensing game and an onstage student competition at the Book Fair.

Microsoft continued to receive the Caring Company Award Five Years Plus in 2010-2011 in recognition of our continuous efforts in corporate social responsibility and of the care we show to our employees and the environment. The Caring Company Scheme was launched by the Hong Kong Council of Social Service and is supported by the HKSAR Government. It aims to build a caring community spirit through the cultivation of corporate citizenship and strategic partnerships.

Microsoft has also won four environmental awards: the Platinum Award for Green Office Management and the Green Purchasewi$e Bronze Award at the Green Council’s Hong Kong Green Awards 2010, and the “Class of Good” Wastewi$e Label and the Carbon “Less” 14% Certificate of the Hong Kong Awards for Environmental Excellence, in recognition of its outstanding commitment to environmentally friendly business practices.

For Green Office Management, we launched a three-phase Environmental Office Management Program in 2009 to drive the three ‘Lesses’ – 1) Less Water, Energy & Paper, 2) The Eco-Pantry, and 3) Less Stationery & Packaging. Various initiatives have greatly cut our office waste and reduced our carbon footprint by 14.7 percent since 2008.

Microsoft’s commitment to green purchasing can be traced back to 1994, starting with our automobile procurement policy and our paper and paper products procurement policy. The paper policy not only outlines the carbon emission reduction target, it also ensures eco-friendly products are included in every bid or quote for paper and paper products. Our procurement system was made greener by introducing e-bidding, electronic POs and e-invoices. We are also the first within Microsoft to use the staff card login printer for printing, reducing printouts by 28%. In addition, we practice green events guidelines such as using eDMs and digital registration instead of mailing marketing collaterals, and reusing event booths, among others.
