    Midterm Guidelines1

    The details of the midterm test are as follows:

    Date: Friday, October 2, 2015

    Time: 2pmduration: 2 hoursVenue: AS6 02-14

    The midterm exam will be conducted exactly like a final exam. You will be assigned a seat,and I will be taking attendance and checking your identification during the exam. Bathroombreaks will only be allowed during the first hour; after that, you will not be allowed to leavethe exam room until the scripts are counted and tallied.

    It will be a closed-book, closed-notes exam. You are allowed to use a non-programmablecalculator to speed you up on the calculations. Be advised that I will personally check calculatorsduring the exam.

    You will write your answers directly below the questions. The test is one-sided, so that youcan write on the back of each page as well. If you tend to discard a lot of what you write ontests, you may want to consider using a pencil, so that you wont run out of space.

    You will write your matriculation number on the cover of your test. Please dont write

    anything else on the cover of your test. It is also preferable that you dont write anything onthe back of the last page of the test.

    Test structure

    The test contains short-answer questions, worth 5 marks each, totaling 100 marks. If two ormore questions are on the same topic, they may be grouped together.

    Please focus onanswering the questions: dont just write everything you know about a topic.Contrary to what most students think, more is notbetter. Short-answer question means thatyou should be able to answer in a few lines (or a few simple calculations). Bear in mind thatif you take too long to answer one question, you may not have enough time to answer another.

    Time management is key to succeeding in this exam!

    Test questions

    The questions can be of several types:

    - draw a graph corresponding to a scenario described in the question [important: makesure you label the axes, curves, steady states, etc... accurately, and that you use arrowsto illustrate the direction of a shift. You may also add a short description of what ishappening in the graph];

    1Please note that the professor reserves the right to update the information provided in this document.

    2/2

    - simple derivations or calculations based on steps illustrated in class [important: show yourwork, dont just write the end result];

    - analytical questions to see if you are able to apply what you have learnt [important: alwaysexplain your answers, dont limit yourself to yes/no, true/false];

    - definitional questions to make sure you understand key concepts introduced in class.

    Test preparation

    You are responsible for all material covered in lectures and all assigned pages in the textbook:

    Chapter 1: all of it, including the Appendix

    Chapter 2: all of itChapter 3: all of it, including the Appendix

    Chapter 4: all of it, including the Appendix

    Chapter 5: all of itChapter 6: all of it

    Chapter 7: all of it

    Chapter 8: all of it, including the Appendix

    When reading the textbook, do not skip the text in the boxes (for example, A Tale of TwoCities, page 197). I often refer to the boxes directly during lecture, and when I dont, it isbecause we have limited time, not because what is in the boxes is not important.

    At the end of each chapter, there are questions for review and problems. They are greatpractice for the midterm and final exams.

    Test Results

    Your mark for the midterm exam will be a percentage, with 100 being the maximum mark. I

    will post your scores on IVLE as soon as all the tests have been marked.The exam scripts will not be returned to you: they will be added to my personal archive

    for this module. However, you are welcome to come to my office during consultation hours andview your exam.
