Summary

Winbox is a small utility that allows administration of Mikrotik RouterOS using a fast and

simple GUI. It is a natie Win!" binary# but $an be run on Linux and Mac OSX using Wine.

%ll Winbox interfa$e fun$tions are as $lose as possible to &onsole fun$tions# that is why there

are no Winbox se$tions in the manual.

Some of adan$ed and system $riti$al $onfigurations are not possible from winbox# like

M%& address $hange on an interfa$e.

Winbox $hangelog

Starting the Winbox

Winbox loader $an be downloaded dire$tly from the router or from the mikrotik download

page. When downloading from the router# open a web browser and enter router's I( address#

RouterOS wel$ome page will be displayed. &li$k on the menu item that says Winbox to

download winbox.exe

When winbox.exe is downloaded# double $li$k on it and winbox loader window will pop up)

*o $onne$t to the router enter I( or M%& address of the router# spe$ify username and

password +if any, and $li$k on Connect button. -ou $an also enter the port number after the

I( address# separating them with a $olon# like this /".01.11.)////. *he port $an be

$hanged in RouterOS services menu.

Note: It is re$ommended to use I( address wheneer possible. M%& session uses network

broad$asts and is not 223 reliable.

-ou $an also use neighbor dis$oery# to list aailable routers by $li$king on [...] button)

4rom list of dis$oered routers you $an $li$k on I( or M%& address $olumn to $onne$t to that

router. If you $li$k on I( address then I( will be used to $onne$t# but if you $li$k on M%&

%ddress then M%& address will be used to $onne$t to the router.

Note: 5eighbor dis$oery will show also dei$es whi$h are not $ompatible with Winbox# like

&is$o routers or any other dei$e that uses &6( +&is$o 6is$oery (roto$ol,

Warning: (asswords are saed in plain text. %nyone with a$$ess to your file system will be

able to retriee passwords.

It is possible to use Winbox in %pple Ma$OS +OS>, operating system by using Wine?ottler

software to pa$kage the appli$ation together with Wine. We hae proided a readymade

Winbox interfa$e has been designed to be intuitie for most of the users. Interfa$e $onsists of)

• Main toolbar at the top where users $a add arious info fields# like &(U and memory

usage.

• Menu bar on the left 7 list of all aailable menus and sub7menus. *his list $hanges

depending on what pa$kages are installed. 4or example if I(0 pa$kage is disabled#

then '#v( menu and all it's sub7menus will not be displayed.

• Work area 7 area where all menu windows are opened.

*itle bar shows information to identify with whi$h router Winbox session is opened.

Information is displayed in following format)

[username]@[Routers ! or #$%] & [Router!'] ( - )inbox [R*+ ,ersion] on

On the Main toolbar's left side is lo$ated un$o and re$o buttons to ;ui$kly undo any $hanges

made to $onfiguration. On the right side is lo$ated)

Winbox has M6I interfa$e meaning that all menu $onfiguration +$hild, widows are atta$hed

to main +parent, Winbox window and are showed in work area.

&hild windows $an not be dragged out of working area. 5oti$e in s$reenshot aboe that

'nter)ace window is dragged out of isible working area and horiAontal s$roll bar appeared at

the bottom. If any window is outside isible work area boundaries the erti$al orBand

horiAontal s$rollbars will appear.

Winbox allows to build sta$k of filters. 4or example if there is a need to filter by destination

address and gateway# then

• set first filter as des$ribed in example aboe#

• press [6] button to add another filter bar in sta$k.

• set up se$onf filter to filter by gateway

• press 4i"ter button to apply filters.

-ou $an also remoe unne$essary filter from the sta$k by pressing [7] button.

Customi8ing "ist o) $is&"aye$ co"umns

?y default winbox shows most $ommonly used parameters. Coweer sometimes it is needed

to see another parameters# for example :?G( %S (ath: or other ?G( attributes to monitor if

routes are sele$ted properly.

Winbox allows to $ustomiAe displayed $olumns for ea$h indiidual window. 4or example to

add ?G( %S path $olumn)

• &li$k on little arrow button +*, on the right side of the $olumn titles or right mouse

$li$k on the route list.

It is also possible to enable 3etai" mo$e. In this mode all parameters are displayed in$olumns# first $olumn is parameter name# se$ond $olumn is parameter's alue.

Category view

It is possible to list items by $ategories. In tis mode all items will be grouped alphabeti$ally

or by other $ategory. 4or example items may be $ategoriAed alphabeti$ally if sorted by name#

items $an also be $ategoriAed by type like in s$reenshot below.
