Design Concept Statement
This is a conceptual design for an artist’s studio.
The challenge is to create a studio under 600 square feet.
Solution –
A modern French farmhouse studio will be built for Marion, a promising painter and ceramist in west Marin County, California.
The studio will take care of functional needs for her artistry, with sufficient storage system, workspace, art gallery, and a lounge platform bed for her to relax in.
The main floor will be largely a studio workspace with a kitchenette and an office corner. Given a tight space, a mezzanine level with high ceilings is added to function as an art gallery, but still maintain an airy feel by adding skylights, see-through ladder and wire-wood hand rails.
The design inspiration comes from the artist’s childhood home in southern Texas. It will be casually professional and humbly understated in design, with French farmhouse furnishings and finishes.

DESIGN PARTI- Light & Floating space- Storage system accessible to all 3 studios
This is a renovation plan for a one-stop beauty shop that includes hair styling, skincare and
nail lounge studios.
The overall design intent is for clients to enjoy the comfort of whole body treatment in
three different business settings, underlined with classic, vintage vibe, and to feel
refreshed and pampered afterwards.
Outdated, cluttered and hazardous hair salon was transformed
Accessibility
Problem – Two different floor heights and a hazardous ramp
Solution – one even flooring surface throughout this space with accessibility design
Storage and Organization
Problem – insufficient storage makes the entire space look chaotic and unprofessional
Solution – a central storage system accessible to all three businesses
Space Planning
Problem – tight, insufficient space for skincare studio and for storing equipment
Solution – increase square footage of this studio, and new overall space planning
Lighting Design
Problem – insufficient and cold
Solution – layered lighting plan

Old layout
The beauty shop, built in the 80’s, currently houses one hair salon and one skincare studio with a multitude of design problems, including accessibility issue, lack of storage and organization system, poor space planning, insufficient lighting design, and lack of overall style and aesthetic appeals.

A smart storage system and a complete makeover turn it into a professional, charming beauty shop with vintage theme

A bland and generic cottage was transformed into an Airbnb
Design Challenge is to mix high with low design, and to specify finishes & materials under client’s budget of $2,500- Former galley kitchen was opened up by just moving 3 feet over to the existing living room; now a u-shaped kitchen- A cottage of Craftsman style with a modern , youthful twist is designed to welcome its guests
