the Music of Freedom!

Insert Your Face Here An Appeal from CPFJ Board President Amy Banks

Dear Members, Friends and Jazz Lovers,

With pleasure I reach out to you after a series of successful Spring concerts. Congratulations to our Executive Directors, members of the Board and our tireless volunteers whose commitment and tenacity are the driving force behind why we are still here today, presenting great music! As you may know, we have met and overcome a variety of challenges. For a while, many of you didn’t even think we were still in operation! Slowly but surely, however, we are rising from the dust to continue the legacy of supporting and presenting jazz. This very newsletter was “reborn” from our members’ need to “hold on to and read” about what CPFJ is doing. Many thanks to Paul Haidet and Amy Hall for producing a great newsletter that is meeting our memberships’ needs.

Our work is hardly done, but one of our biggest challenges is actually talent and manpower. On behalf of the Board of CPFJ, I ask you to search your hearts and minds and decide to become a volunteer for this organization. If you have a few extra hours a month we can put them to good use! Whether helping out in the office, organizing and/or hosting a fundraiser, assisting behind the scenes at a concert, hanging concert posters and advertisements, writing an article for the newsletter, enrolling new members or even heading a committee -- we have so much to do and so few to execute the tasks -- any help at will be a contribution.

With deep appreciation, I’m pleased to announce the newest members of our team: Tonya Mowery, serving as Secretary of the Board; Ben Goldsborough, serving as Youth Education Committee Chair; and Leslie Beamer, our new Volunteer Coordinator. They represent the latest members of our community who have stepped up to help us strengthen CPFJ. We are looking forward to their insight, time and talent!

We’ve still got big shows on the horizon: Jazz Camp & Jazz Fest 2012 this month; our Jazz Fest/Picnic in August; and our Fall Concert Series are coming soon. The time to help CPFJ is now. In the next newsletter, I’m looking to insert your name among the list of new volunteers. You may be thinking you’d like to participate in ways I haven’t even thought of, and that’s great, too!! Contact Steve and Andrea by email at [email protected] or give the office a call at 717.540.1010.

We look forward to seeing and working with you soon!

Warmest Regards,

Amy2

Shades of ‘TraneAs listeners, we go to jazz concerts for many reasons. Some are musicians, looking for new ideas to incorporate into their own playing. Some are intellectuals, reveling in the musicological sophistication and exchange of ideas happening on the bandstand. Some are romantics, there to tune in, feel, and connect with some part of their being that only swing can unlock. All of these goals rely on the fundamental paradox of jazz being a music that marries the comfort of the familiar with the uncertainty of the new. When these two are realized simultaneously, the result is sublime.

I experienced jazz’s fundamental paradox in all its burning glory on Sunday night. Ben Goldsborough and the Mechanicsburg High Jazz Band kicked off the evening with a program of venerable standards that included “St Thomas,” “I Remember Clifford,” “Sweet Georgia Brown,” and my personal favorite, Oliver Nelson’s “Stolen Moments.” Comfort and familiarity indeed, and a welcome program, given all of the pop and rock arrangements that seem to be the rage these days among many a high school “jazz” concert.

As Warren Wolf and his quartet (Allyn Johnson – piano, Kris Funn – bass, John Lamkin III – drums) took the stage and eased into the program with Duke Ellington’s “Come Sunday”, my sense of comfort deepened, especially with Warren’s nods to the melody of “Autumn in New York”, and Allyn Johnsons’ “Hi Fly” reference toward the end of a wonderfully blues- and gospel-drenched solo. Yes, in a way, this concert felt like putting on your favorite sweater as the band made its way though timeless tunes by Monk, Mal Waldron, Johnny Mandel, and Johnny Green. Just ease on into the comfort …

While comfort in and of itself is, well, comforting, there needs to be more. There needs to be that elusive spark, that “thing” that gets us to turn off the stereo, get up off the couch, and come to hear the music live. This band was really good at living. John Lamkin III and Kris Funn locked into the groove and swung mightily with the kind of joy and abandon that you see on the playground when school finally lets out for the summer. Allyn Johnson’s work was strongly rooted in the church, and gave the band an earthy grounding that helped to move mind, body, and soul. And Warren… well, now I understand why the critics are calling him the next big thing. The amount of raw talent here was staggering. He is right up there with the greats – Lionel Hampton, Milt Jackson, Bobby Hutcherson, Gary Burton, Roy Ayers, and onward. With staggering speed and sensitive dynamics, he proved himself to be a master at drawing the audience in to the songs.

But wait, there’s more -- in my concert notes, I have the word “urgency” written four times. When these guys got rolling, there was the kind of boiling, churning energy that I normally associate with John Coltrane’s great quartet. On the original compositions in particular, there was a tension, a drive, a restlessness in communicating a message that belies the turbulent times that we find ourselves in. I found my mind wandering back to a similar age when the US was in Vietnam, the civil rights movement was exploding, and jazz musicians were recording pieces like “Tanya” (Dexter Gordon), “Search for the New Land” (Lee Morgan), and “A Love Supreme” (Coltrane).

Maybe this present age is like the sixties. Maybe reincarnation does exist. Maybe we have found a new Trane, embodied in an unassuming vibraphonist named Warren Wolf. -PAUL HAIDET
