NuusbriefNuusbriefDie Suid Afrikaanse Miniatuur Perd Telers Genootskap
Dec 2013Dec 2013Dec 2013
Boodskap van die PresidentWhy do you enter something, is it just to see a result? Hoekom is die wen so belangrik? Is it a system of being important?
Oumasindroom het hewiglik sy kop by my uitgesteek.
Some people wait for their chance, others take it. Wees een van die kansgrypers. 2013 lê op sy rug maar is nog nie verby nie. Eindig 2013 sterk!
“Remember One reason why birds and horses are happy is because they are not trying to impress other birds and horses.”
Whinnying is everything and not winning!
Geseënde KersfeesPassports - The status
We all await with interest developments within
the equine community regarding Equine
passports. The SAMHBS is required to
comply with, and implement legislation and
requirements from show holding bodies. It is
however important that people realize we are
not the Passport police. Due to the state of
flux and the unpreparedness and arrears at
SAEF, shows held are making concessions
where breeders need either show a valid
Passport or a Registration certificate and a
letter from a veterinarian stating that horses
are inoculated and listing the batch nr of the
vaccine used. Horses are required to be
inoculated against AHS and Equine flu.
AHS & FLU Vaccinations -Rule Amendments
AHS vaccinations
Foals are to be vaccinated after the foal is 3
months of age and before 30 June of the year
following its birth.
Yearlings are to be vaccinated between 1 July
and 31 December with a gap of at least 3
months after the foal vaccinations.
hereafter, annually between 1 July and 31
December. It would be fine, for example, to
vaccinate a horse in July this year and only in
December the following year.
Flu vaccination
Foals need a primary course of 2 vaccinations
given 4-6 weeks apart once the foal is 6
months of age and before 31 July of the year
following its birth.
Thereafter at intervals not exceeding 6
months.
Mares and stallions shall be vaccinated at
intervals not exceeding 12 months.
Misty Meadows - Feedback
A week after SAMHBS Nationals in Pretoria a
Regional show was held at Misty Meadows outside
Pretoria. The SA Championships were hosted by
SASA and we were pleased to participate. There
were 33 horses from 13 studs and the jumping and
utility classes were particularly well attended. This
show was marked by the very positive atmosphere
and good cheer exhibited by all.
It was truly a happy event. Thanks to SASA and Misty
Meadows for including us and to Greg Goss for
judging.
We still believe that Miniatures do not get the
exposure they warrant at shows and we are
determined to strive for better arenas and showing
times.
We are acknowledged at some shows as crowd
pleasers and we strive to earn this accolade where
ever we show.

The Derby weekend once again saw a very good
turnout of miniature horses competing in the jumping
event.
The quality of the jumping continues to improve and
the dedication and enthusiasm of the group of
people who are putting this event on the map make it
a pleasure to participate.
The event was again sponsored by Equipage.
A parade of Horses of the world was held prior to the
main jumping event which was attended by a record
crowd and Hart E Miniatures represented the breed
in this event.
The SA Derby - Jumping
Die Cradock SkouCradock show was hosted at the agricultural show grounds. It was a regional show in the Eastern Cape and
held in conjunction with Cape Boerperd, American Saddlers and Welch ponies. 30 horses competed and 8
breeders were represented at a very successful event. There is no reason why this show will not grow in
numbers and become one of the premium events on the Miniature horse calendar. Thanks to Ezelle Marais for
putting this horse show on the map. The Champion Stallion was Eduan TG Joker and reserve Champ was
Pureperd dot com. The Supreme Champion Mare was Eduan Jokers Milady. The Supreme Champion
Miniature was EDUAN TG Joker and Reserve was Pure Perd IBS Dot Com.

Breed Shows are where we measure the quality of breed stock for perpetuating the horses chosen by the judges
according to a breed standard determined by the SAMHBS in order to record achievement and to guide future
breeding and select the genetics that perform.

julle in jule stoet geregestreer will he daar reflekteer.
Why Belong to a Breed SocietyWhether to register our horses or not in these tough financial times is a question often asked. What do we gain what do we lose? How do we as breeders benefit?
A breed Society provides a structure from which a breed operates. How good the breed Society is often provides the answer to how healthy a Breed is in a particular geographical area. This frame work provides two main things.
A. STRUCTURE - A Constitution, A breed Standard, Show rules and administration that is functional and provides security to members who wish to hang their hats on the stand provided for a breed. Breed Societies maintain and manage the various structures that sustain this structure. They are required to this fairly, diligently and without exception. This is necessary for the good governance of the organisation as well as to maintain and protect the functionality of the breed itself.
B. SERVICE AND ADMINISTRATION. A group of people who stand together in a common cause in the interest of promoting the same interest need their cause to be administered in order to extract value from the exercise. A breed Society provides a service and structure to its members in this regard. The administration in this regards pertains to the implementation and sustaining the documents that uphold its structure. It further assists to promote the breed jointly in order to assure its continued growth. It measures the progeny from various breeders by providing a showing platform. Most importantly it performs the function of administering the recordal and registration that make up that breeds genetic material. This genetic material is the life blood of a breed and its right to continued survival.
It takes people to perform these functions and they are elected at an AGM. If you don't make an input at an AGM as to who must drive your breed society your voice may not be heard. If you don't raise key issues at an AGM these issues may go unheeded.
The people who are elected need money to execute their tasks and functions. Thus the fee structure. A well run, functional Breed Society produces the paper by which our animals are recorded and which enhances their value. It ensures the accuracy and structures that validate this paper and by which what we as breeders claim is recognised as accurate.
We stand together as breeders, and pursue a common coarse in the interest of our registered horses. We are not Miniature breeders if we are not members and the horses we breed are not registered. We cannot claim the credibility our society lends the breed and the protection and uniformity its structure enforces.
When we sell unregistered horses as Miniature Horses they are not Miniature Horses and the people that buy them have no assurances to the claims made when they are marketed. There is a difference between a South African Miniature Horse and a similar small animal that meets the broad size and confirmation descriptions. There is a difference between a registered breeder and a producer of random small horses that lay claim to be part of the breed. That difference is registration and the right to breed this special breed and claim the naming right of the progeny bred as part of the breed. Yes it costs money, but the money spent ads to the inherent value of the horse and to the security and various benefits the breeder gains by belonging to the Breed Society.

Confirmation in a Nutshell
The President of the AMHA, Mr Jim Birkenklau accompanied by an equine consultant and senior judge, Mr Wayne Hipsley and Jennifer Carlson recently visited South Africa where they were welcomed by our President Coralezet Erasmus and met with members of our SAMHBS and various breeders. The purpose of the visit was to strengthen bonds between the two breed Societies and initiate cooperation.
They visited 10 + studs where they scrutinized SA horses and their progeny and fielded questions sharing extensive knowledge and expertise very constructively. They also met with Studbook and the secretariat which left them impressed with the qual i ty o f our recorda l systems and administration.
The AMHA and SAMHBS are looking to cooperate re the promotion of Miniature Horses in SA, shows and judging, breeding programs, and the dissemination of information amongst other things.
Thank you to those members that extended warm South African hospitality and assisted in making this trip possible and especially to Paul Couzyn and Tertius Le Roux who travelled countrywide with our visitors.
The SA Miniature was acknowledged as a separate independent breed in its own right originating from a separate and diverse genetic pool. We thank our American visitors for their time and a very pleasant and constructive visit.
Report on the visit by AMHA to SA
CEM testing remains a compulsory test on all registered stallions and a requirement to register foals. We note that the numbers of registrations are down on other years in spite of the fact that the numbers of mares have increased. Other breeds are also experiencing this phenomenon.
This matter has been taken up by breed societies as a whole with Department of vetinary Science. The responses and progress is slow and the outcome uncertain.
We request members to continue reporting the birth of their foals to the society and in the hope of a positive outcome they will have the benefits of registration.
Both paternal and maternal DNA is now a requirement for the registration of a foal. This requirement has been implemented over a period of years starting with the DNA of stallions being a requirement and later introducing the DNA of mares. This gives certainty as to the genetic makeup of a foal and is important in giving buyers of horses the comfort of knowing what they are procuring.
More importantly it adds value to our registration papers and ultimately to the value of our horses. If foal recordals are not accompanied by DNA results from a recognised lab then the registration will become pending and will not be completed till the required results are received.
There are three laboratories from which the results are recognised.1. Unistel - Unistel Geneeskundige Laboratoriums, Post Net Suite 13, Privaatsak X22, Tygervallei, 7536 - Tel: (021) 9389213, Fax: (021) 9320065 epos: [email protected] (Dr Munro Marx)
2. LNR P/Sak X 2, Irene, 0062 - Pranisha Soma - [email protected] Tel 012 6729218, Faks: 012 6729214
3. Onderstepoort Veterinary Genetics Laboratory, Faculty of Veterinary Science, University of Pretoria, P/Bag X04, Onderstepoort, 0110. Telno: 012-5298240, Fax: 012-5298310 [email protected]
Julle kan enige tyd vir Herman Labuschagne of Philna kontak as julle onseker is oor iets.
