Minister’s Message Dear Friends, What a great day we shared last Sunday, May 22, when you, the people of this

congregation, gathered to install me as your minister. I am grateful for the blessings of our celebration–the music, the flowers, the food, the bright Arkansas spring day, our rich laughter, the sight of quite a few of us proudly wearing purple (a color you all know I love), the presence of so many people (and the words of others from far away) whose love and support have carried me on my journey and, a blessing I will always remember: the loving smiles on your faces and in your eyes as we said our vows to one another. Thank you, each and everyone, for being a part of our day of celebration. Together, we made memories that I will carry with me for the rest of my days. My heartfelt thanks also for your generous expressions of gratitude for the ministry we share. Annual Congregational Meeting June 5

Dear Friends,

For people who are retired or otherwise available on the second Tuesday of each month, Young at Heart offers a $5 noon lunch, prepared and coordinated by two main participants, Jeanne Brown and Joanne Kriehn. They have alternated months to create menus and foodstuffs on second Tuesdays from September 2015 through June 2016, and have invited others to help with parts of the meal. Jean Pennucci has decorated tables, Rich Roy and Jerry Blackburn have generously helped with set-up and take-down of tables, and have arranged for sound and projection for the programs which follow the meal. Many people help in the kitchen before and after the sessions. We try to present programs after lunch in which our church members and friends have a special interest and/or expertise. Presenters have consistently shared their personal observations, insights, information, and photos as we have set out to know each other better and continue our spiritual developments and growth. They have helped us to learn something, further enjoy each others’ company, enrich ourselves and laugh and visit together.

The Young at Heart program for June 14 will be a stimulating conversation with Rev. Jan about the Transcendentalists. Our regular $5 lunch will be served at noon.

Please come early to visit, and to participate with a warm, friendly group of alert minds and young at heart hearts! Helpers of good will are invited to step forward and join in keeping the kitchen thriving and programs coming.

After June, we will take a summer break - our next program will be in September.

See you there! Selma

A Note from Our Board President

It is with a sense of joy and optimism that I write this note. The spirit of abundance and the attitude that we can and we will is in the air.

Leadership new and old is all around us. We are sending seven members to the Dwight Brown Leadership Experience this summer. This addition of seven elders is very important.

The nominating and leadership committee has recruited a wonderful collection of members to lead us next year.

The annual fund drive (which is absolutely essential to the operation of this institution) as compared to our history was a marvelous success. It is once again evidence of the spirit of abundance.

If you are not coming to church you are missing a wonderful opportunity for fellowship and growth. Please come. You can identify yourself as a volunteer or just enjoy the worship and fellowship.

Faith Development Offerings led by Rev. Jan Nielsen

How Do You See It?”: Explorations of Essays

Join Rev. Jan for a monthly gathering devoted to exploring contemporary essays taken from the recently released volume, The Best American Essays, edited by Ariel Levy. As we read each essay on our own, we will ask, “How do I see it?” and then when we gather, we will invite one another to answer the question, “How do you see it?” We will bring our brown bag lunches and gather on Wednesdays in Thomson Hall from 12:15 to 1:15. Newcomers will always be welcome.

“Listening for God”: Explorations of Short Stories

Join Rev. Jan for Listening for God, a monthly, “drop-in, come when you can,” Wednesday noontime short story discussion group. The group will probe contemporary short fiction for insights, both spiritual and intellectual, about what it means to be human. The format is based on a long-used adult faith development model called “Listening for God” but “Listening for Life” also could be an apt title. Stories will be taken from the just-released volume, The Best American Short Stories of 2015, edited by T.C. Boyle. We will meet from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. in Thomson Hall. Newcomers will always be welcome.

We need leaf raking, mulching debris on property, other outside chores. Too big for you? There are always small jobs available.

Call for Recycle Team Volunteers

The Recycle Team is in need of one or two new volunteers. Our small team takes turns hauling home the recyclables accumulated at the church. We rotate on a monthly basis, and include the material in our recycle bin at home.

There are currently three people rotating this job, so, with one or two additions, each person would need to do this job only about three times a year. We also write a quarterly article about recycling for the Outer Circle. With four people rotating that duty, each person writes one article per year. Anybody interested in participating in this volunteer opportunity can talk to Jan Bowen at church, by phone at 803-0089, or by email at [email protected]. Thanks in advance.

UUCLR SummRE Camp Sundays June 5: The Importance of Balance in Nature

What is the meaning of “interdependent web of all life”? Our 7th UU principle focuses on this concept, and this session will be aimed at communicating what it means and why it is important for humans to act responsibly and tread lightly on the earth. June 12 and 26: Biodiversity Survey

We will learn about the ecosystem of our church woodlands and discuss what Unitarian Universalism says about our connection with nature and all life. Closed-toe shoes are recommended!

June 19: Arkansas Insects with our very own bug expert!

We will get to know some of the insects that we humans often see as a nuisance. We will discover the purpose these creatures serve and what drives them to behave the way they do. We will also learn about some ways to control household pests without harming them or ourselves. *Schedule is tentative, and subject to change. Rachel Finley, Director of Religious Education

Welcome New Members at UUCLR My name is Honey Sharp and I was born and raised in Central Arkansas. At the age of 20 I had achieved a great deal as a budding flautist and music teacher. I had just discovered UUCLR when I was offered a great music scholarship out of state. I left home with my young dog and flute in tow to finish my degree in Music Performance at Eastern Michigan University. I further discovered UU in Ann Arbor, where I would find the food my soul needed to survive such a culture change, one that changed me for the better. Upon completion of my degree, I once again set out with my dog and flute in tow, this time to California to pursue a Masters Degree. Upon arriving

in California I discovered that the gold was scarce and began my career as an insurance agent. I've still got my flute in tow and my dog came back to Arkansas with me, however I recently held her tight as she crossed that rainbow bridge at fifteen years old. I'm currently using my knowledge in the insurance industry to help fellow Arkansans and am proud to be raising my greatest gift, my two year old daughter, Claire, here in my home state where she and I will plant our roots.

Be a Facilities Team Member

The Facilities Team Needs Volunteers to help with UUCLR grounds maintenance. This work includes lawn mowing, edging, string trimmer cutting around the property, shrub and tree trimming, planting beds maintenance, and the woodland area behind the church. If you have a desire to make things look good and don't mind (or enjoy) a little sweat and dust, we could sure use your help.

We have self-propelled mowers, a riding lawn tractor, string trimmers, saws, a mulcher/shredder, garden tools, and we can do a lot now that wasn't possible just two years ago. But we need your effort! If you're looking for a way to help the Church, these activities save thousands of dollars a year for UUCLR by us doing them ourselves. Schedules are flexible, but for the summer growing season, we typically work Thursdays or Saturdays.

Contact our team email at: [email protected] or call Bill Kimpel at (501)786-1331.

Volunteer Appreciation Dinner June 10

Worship Arts is inviting ALL UUCLR volunteers to a Thank You Spaghetti Dinner and now we need help for setup, in the kitchen and for cleanup!

Please pass this message to volunteers who might be willing to work at this event. If you can help or if you need childcare, let Liz Mackenzie know - 501-773-4521 (text or call)

Special Collection

During Rev. Jan’s Installation ceremony, a special collection was taken to benefit the UUA Living Tradition Fund. This fund provides scholarships and grants to ministerial students and also provides financial assistance to ministers in need. The amount collected was $954.00. Thanks to everyone for a very generous contribution from our church.
