Year 9 Raise £1,000 for Worthy Causes

This half term all three year 9 forms have been raising money for three charities: Can-cer research, S.O.S Children and Macmillan. On 12th May we organised a charity event that had delicious cakes for sale, football matches, raffles, henna, pin the tail on the donkey, face painting and lets nnot forget about the stocks! Our teachers compro-mised with us and agreed to go into the stocks. Consequently, it led to Mr Rimmer getting sponged in the face by Asma and Miss Porter’s eyelashes nearly got ruined! As a result, through our hard work we raised £1,000 for charity.

Currently, we are working on our individual charity projects. I am doing a 5k run with Sara Masood and others are doing lots of weird, challenging things, such as a three-legged walk for three days. Hopefully, many of you will sponsor us to help fundraise for our charities. Lify Hossen, 9 Oxford

The Year 8 Paris trip was an-other great success. Despite the wet weather and the early start, pu-pils were able to make the most of climbing the Eiffel Tower, visiting Place de la République and eating a delicious meal in a restaurant. It was great to see pupils putting their French into action when travelling on the Métro and ordering food. For staff and pupils alike, it was a really memorable day which will serve the pupils well as they built towards their GCSE in French. Mr Patterson.

Green Fingers

The KSA garden has had it’s first harvest this week!! Pu-pils have been working hard to keep the garden bloom-ing. That, combined with all the rain, has pro-duced our first crop of radishes (these ones were planted by Majida Ali, 8 Nottingham). Keep up the good work!!

The Imperial War

Museum

On Monday 28th May year 9 visited the Im-perial War Museum as part of their History studies. A taught session led by the IWM research team gave our pupils exclusive ac-cess to primary evidence unseen by the gen-eral public that helped us to unpick what life was like in Nazi Germany, following the story of Werner Lehman – a German boy who was just 11 when Hitler came to power. Looking at the world through Werner’s eyes revealed how persuasive, frightening and all-encompassing the Nazi regime was.

Thanks to all the year 9 staff who worked hard on the day to make the trip happen.

Mr Clark

The KSA Summer Fair

The Summer Fair will be held on Saturday 7th July between 12-4pm. This huge event is being organised by our very committed parent council and they need your help to make this the best summer fair yet! Because 2012 is such an exciting year to be in the United Kingdom, there will be two themes to the day; The Jubilee and the Olympics. If you have any jubilee bunting you can pur-chase or donate, please hand it in to Ms Col-mans. Alternatively, if you have any items to donate to raffles or stalls or if you’re a dab hand in the kitchen and want to donate some cakes, biscuits or treats, then please see the letter attached. This needs to be filled out and returned to Ms Col-mans so she knows if you can help KSA’s Summer Fair 2012!

Radwan Hussain,

Broadcasting for the BBC

Those of you who have had the privilege of hear-ing Radwan Hussain’s public speaking will not be surprised that on 22nd May he was chosen to present a speech to British Future Think Tank and a large audience at an event called The Big British Breakfast. Radwan is very talented at speech marking and the organisation was so im-pressed that they asked him to send an article for them to publish on their website. You can enjoy his article “Why the Queen is great value for Britain” at their website (http://www.britishfuture.org/). At this event there were members of the press who were so im-pressed that they contacted us immediately asking if Radwan could be interviewed for BBC

local radio as part of their jubilee reporting. This was recorded on 29th May and will be broadcast over the jubilee celebration week. We are very proud of him! Ms Porter

Kings College London Medical Students visited the Year 9 students to put them through their paces as young scientists and as possible medics of the future. Students were introduced to medical degrees, the qualifications they need, and then set to work on developing their medical skills. Students worked in small groups to take each other’s blood pressure; Rudaba even managed to dis-play her new skill by taking Miss Foun-tain’s blood pressure, and luckily found that she was healthy!

Students then learnt how to stitch up some fake wounds, which Jack shows great talent in doing, and finally by taking blood from a prosthetic arm. It was a great opportunity to have Kings College visit us, and we hope that we will be able to run more events with them in the future. Ms Fountain

It has been an enthralling experience to be part of set design and costume. We have all been doing our best to make Macbeth the best performance possible. A variety of things have been achieved. We have been sewing costumes, painting boxes and leaves also, coming up with unique and original ideas and

collecting branches from Regent’s park. Helping us de-veloped our ideas were Ms Venn and Ms Kubba. It has been a pleasure be-ing part of set design and costume and we hope you can come to the per-formance and witness our wonderful pieces. By Nadia and Ntale

Today was the Class of 2018's first performance of Mac-beth and we did very well. The actors had worked hard in rehearsals and it showed from their excellent and pro-fessional performances today. The musicians, who com-posed the score, were also fantastic. The combination of set de-sign, music, lighting, acting and costume created a phenomenal atmosphere that blew the audience away. It was the first time we have ever put on four shows in a row and all of them were sold out. Congratulations to the whole production team (everyone in the Class of 2018) and a big thank you to Ms Malortie for directing the play and work-ing so hard to pull it all together.

By Abdulrahman, Blerta and Jacob

The Year 7 String Quartet (Nadia Ezbakh, Mohammed Awale, Chris

Ebulu and Adel Mousa) per-formed to a capacity audience at

City Year Headquarters on 27 April in aid of the charity Project Ubuntu. They shared the stage with rappers, singers (including Mr Oki!) and even a magician!

Congratulations to all the quartet members for their hard work and

professionalism. Mr Parratt

Andrew Lipianen (7 Bristol) sat his Grade 5 violin exam earlier this term. He passed this exam with flying colours, showing a great depth of mu-sical knowledge and under-standing that he can now ap-ply to his theoretical work in music. Well done Andrew! Mr Parratt

We have a limited number of tickets for the Music Gala, and are offering them to families of performing pupils first. Tickets are free of charge, but a sug-gested donation of £5 towards KSA’s music programme would be much appreciated. Please see Ms Colmans if you would like to order some tickets.
