    MissionStatementThe aim of the MonashEpworth Rehabilitation Research Centre is to conduct ethical, innovative andinternationallycompetitiveresearchinvestigatingoutcomesandtheeffectivenessofinterventionprogramsforindividualswithbrain injuryororthopaedic injury sustainedasa resultof trauma,with theultimateaimofmaximisingtheirfunctional,psychologicalandsocialoutcomes.

    Aims&ObjectivesTheCentreaimsto:

    developitstraumaresearchprogrammesinaclinicalcontext; translateoutcomesfromtheresearchintomoreeffectiverehabilitationofindividualswithtraumatic

    injuries,withtheultimateaimofmaximisingtheirqualityoflife; provideasupportiveenvironmentinwhichdoctoralstudentscanreceiveresearchtraining; developcollaborationswithintheuniversity,Epworthhospitalandthewiderresearchandclinical

    community,locally,nationallyandinternationally; supportitsresearchactivitiesthroughcompetitivegrantfunding publishfindingsininternationallyreputablejournals; disseminatefindingswidelythroughconferencepresentations.

    CoreBusinessActivitiesTheCentrewasestablishedin2000,followingtheappointmentofProfessorJenniePonsfordtotheSchoolofPsychologyandPsychiatry(nowSchoolofPsychologicalSciences)atMonashUniversity,bringingtogethertheresources and expertise of Monash University with that of Epworth Hospital, which runs rehabilitationprogramsforvictimsoftrauma.Ithasbeenselffundingsinceitsinception.TheTransportAccidentCommission(TAC) isthe largestfinancialsupporteroftheCentre,havingprovidedsubstantialfundingforthe longitudinalheadinjuryoutcomestudyandassociatedprojectsforover19years,beginningin1995.Specificprojectshavealso been supported by the NHMRC, Victorian Neurotrauma Initiative, Monash University, ISCRR, JackBrockhoffFoundation,WilliamBucklandFoundation,AustralianRotaryHealthResearchFund,theWenckhartFoundation,RACVandtheDepartmentofHumanServices.

    Professor JenniePonsford,BA (Hons),MA (ClinNeuropsych),PhD,MAPsS isDirectorof theCentre.She isalsoProfessorofNeuropsychology intheSchoolofPsychologyandPsychiatry intheFacultyofMedicine,NursingandHealthSciencesatMonashUniversity.Thisappointment,madein2005isajointappointmentwithEpworthHospital,whocontributes20%ofhersalary,therestofwhichisfundedbyMonashUniversity. ShedevotestwodaysofherworkingweektotheCentresactivitiesandclinicalwork,with1.5daysdevotedtoadministrativeworkintheSchooland1.5daystoteaching.SheisthefoundingDirectoroftheDoctorofPsychologyinClinicalNeuropsychologyprogramme,intowhichsheteaches. She isalsoamemberofEpworthsResearch andEthicsCommitteeand teachingHospitalsSteering Committee. She is a Chief Investigator on the Centre of Excellence in TBI ResearchadministeredbytheNationalTraumaResearch InstituteattheAlfredHospitaland fundedby ISCRR,andalsoachiefinvestigatoronanNHMRCCentreofExcellenceinTraumaticBrainInjuryPsychosocialRehabilitation. As the former manager of the Psychology Department at Bethesda RehabilitationHospital (now Epworth Hospital), where she was employed between 1982 and 1999, ProfessorPonsfordhashadbroad clinicalexperience in the fieldof traumaticbrain injury andhas conductedextensive research investigatingoutcomesand the impactof rehabilitation followingmild,moderateandsevereheadinjury.Shehasbeentherecipientofnumerouslargegrantsaschiefinvestigator,haspublished over 180 journal articles, book chapters and two books on the subject, and is regularlyinvited to speak at international conferences,havingmadeover150 conferencepresentations. SheservesontheEditorialBoardsofseven international journalsandservedonanNHMRCprojectgrantreviewpanel in2013.ProfessorPonsford iscurrentlyamemberoftheExecutiveofthe InternationalBrainInjuryAssociation,isacommitteememberandHonoraryFellowoftheAustralianSocietyfortheStudyofBrainImpairment,ofwhichshehasalsobeenPresident,isamemberoftheGoverningBoardof the World Federation of Neurorehabilitation, and is the Immediate PastPresident of theInternationalNeuropsychologicalSociety.ProfessorPonsfordoverseesalltheactivitiesoftheCentre,including grant applications, projectmanagement, staff supervision and preparation of reports andpublications.
