Prizm Project Statement
Restaurateur, Inc. is a restaurant located near the Chicago River in Chicago,
Illinois is looking for a facelift in many different areas. Restaurateur, Inc.
desires to be a health conscious and locally sustainable restaurant.
Successfully applying the brand reinvention to the existing 6500 square
foot floor plan, while also providing a fully designed kitchen, restrooms,
dining, bar, patio, waiting area as well as a mezzanine, was the challenge in
this project. The owners of Restaurateur, Inc. desire to become a health
conscious, global American casual dining experience with a modern
atmosphere.
Prizm Concept Statement
When the rebranding of Restaurateur, Inc. was underway, the design
concept took a turn towards a casual dining experience during the day
along with a high-end dining experience at night. Heavily influenced by the
existing angles of the floor plan, the new brand naturally became “Prizm.”
All front of house areas of the restaurant were designed by extending the
existing angles to create the spaces. The bar, a square located in the center
of the restaurant and angled along with the front door, serves as the main
focal point of the restaurant. Because Prizm is located on the Chicago River,
the existing curtain wall in the lower southwest corner is the prime dining
location because of the view. In order to enhance this feature, the majority
of the dining in that space is tables and chairs with the exception of a few
booths in the northeast corner to prevent blocking the view. In the dining
areas, multiple forms of dining are provided such as banquet style seating,
table and chairs, and booths. In the bar area seating for 50 was provided in
forms of barstools and lounge seating that includes couches and tables
and/or benches and tables. These are areas to grab a drink and wait on a
table or simply to grab a drink with a friend and hangout. When designing a
restaurant, territoriality and proxemics are extremely important. Many
spaces in Prizm are somehow divided or partitioned from the surrounding
space giving guests a sense of privacy and an area that is their own.
Allowing enough and sometimes even more clearance space that is
required around the tables was a must to prevent overcrowding issues that
no one enjoys. The lighting used in Prizm is a huge design factor that aids in
the overall design concept greatly. Because a prism shoots off different
values of color, lighting was used to mimic these values of color. Glass
chandeliers in funky prism shapes, and the use of reflective surfaces help to
convey the high end restaurant environment feel.

Modern ComfortSpring Creek Village is a new community for homeless women and children
in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The community will house a variety of tiny
homes for the women and their children to live in. The houses are located
within the community with close proximity to the daycare, community
center, and clinic. One of the families living in Spring Creek Village is a
pregnant woman and her 4 year old son. They are in need of a 450 square
foot home with a 150 square foot loft.

CONCEPT
This tiny home was truly inspired by the modern comfort concept idea. Keeping the exterior
clean and modern while also providing a comfortable and warm home for the family was
the concept challenge. This client in particular was a single mother with a 4 year old son and
expecting a baby girl in the future. in order to give them plenty of play space an open floor
plan was used. In order to provide the family with plenty of storage for all of their toys and
belongings, custom furniture was a large aspect. Built in shelving in the living room serves
as storage and a part of it rolls out to provide storage under the stairs. In the son’s
bedroom, a bunk bed that turns into a desk is provided. Because comfort was a necessity
for this family and that can be a challenge in a tiny house, a comfortable pull out sofa was
added to the living room. The loft space currently serves as a playroom but can easily
transition to a bedroom.
