Due to the nature o the war with Germany the Soviet Navytook a back seat during the Great Patriotic War (WWII).However, one o the areas they were able to contribute greatly
was with personnel. Excess personnel was ormed into eitherNaval Inantry (Morskaya Pekhota) battalions organised bythe Red Navy or Naval Rie (Morskaya Strelkovy) battalionsormed by the Red Army. Large ormations (regiments andbrigades) were assembled rom these.
During Naval Inantrys early battles in 1941 and 1942 theyshowed high morale by their sheer willingness to accepthigh casualties during the desperate ghting or their ownnaval bases. Teir stubborn tenacity unnerved the Germans, leading them to be nicknamed the Black Death by theirGerman oes because o this and their black uniorms.
Te Naval Rie Brigades were raised in the desperate times o
1941 and 1942. Surplus Naval ocers and NCOs would beused to create what were essentially small inantry divisions.Usually up to 50% o the troops were also naval personnel
with the remaining troops being conscripts. Each brigadehad scouts, sappers, a machine-gun company and artillery.
As these units had naval experience, they were an obviouschoice or amphibious landings. Usually there were nodedicated landing crat available and the Soviet Navy wouldrequisition civilian crat to land their troops.
A number o these units were still ghting in 1944 to 1945.Te ollowing our examples relate to the Amphibious Assaultscenario included in this PDF or in the recent Objective:
Festung Crimeaarticle ound in the History section o theFlames Of Warwebsite.
83rd Naval INfaNtryBrIgadeTe 83rd Naval Inantry Brigade was ormed in August 1942at Novorossiysk rom the 16th, 144th and 305th Naval Inantry
Naval InFantryBattalions (Morskaya Pekhota Batalons). It was initially desig-nated the 2nd Brigade, but was re-designated the 83rd duringits ormation.
During February 1943 the brigade took part in the amphibi-ous operations to seize Novorossiysk and threaten the anko the German troops in the aman peninsula. Te attack
was ultimately unsuccessul, but did carve out a small beach-head across the bay rom Novorossiysk and the main Sovietlines. Te beachhead became amous as the Malaya Zemlyaor Little Land which Soviet troops held or almost sevenmonths behind the German lines in 1943.
On 9 September 1943 another, this time successul, amphib-ious landing was made to take Novorossiysk, Tey took thecity on 16 September. Te landing was supported by artilleryrom across the bay and the brigade earned the honoric title
Novorossiyskaya or their part in the action.
In November the 83rd Naval Inantry Brigade was part othe 18th Landing Army that made an amphibious landing onthe Kerch Peninsula o the Crimea. Te 18th Landing Armyretook the peninsula and pushed the deending Axis troopsback into the Crimea.
Tey took part in the urious ghting or the Crimea thatollowed in early 1944 as part o the Separate Coastal Army.In August 1944 they were transerred to the 3rd UkrainianFront and operated on the Danube River in support o theofensives into Romania and Hungary.
Te 83rd Naval Inantry Brigade preormed one o the lastamphibious landings o the war in the east on the 26 March1945 when the 144th battalion made an assault across theDanube into Budapest. Te Danube Flotilla (ormally theVolga Flotilla) landed them in the city with over 500 men,two 45mm guns, seven mortars, six heavy and 20 light

machine-guns where they took part in the nal clearing othe city o Axis resistance.
By April 1945 they were attached to the 5th Guards ankArmy, riding tanks into the Czechoslovakian capital oPrague.
115th Naval INfaNtryBrIgadeLittle inormation is available or this brigade, but it islikely that were ormed rom surplus Naval personnel romthe Baltic Fleet in 1941. Te took part in the amphibiouslanding near Merkla in early 1944 to out ank the GermanIII SS-Panzerkorpson the Narva River (see Scenario in thisPDF).
255th Naval rIfle BrIgadeTis brigade was orm in September 1942 rom the 1stNaval Inantry Brigade by the Black Sea Fleet. It was ormed
with the independent 14th, 142nd and 322nd Naval InantryBattalions and the 726th (Coast Deence) Artillery Battery.Te 255th Brigade was the sister ormation to the 83rd NavalInantry Brigade. Both brigades were ormed in Novorossiyskand later ought or the city and took part in the landingsthat ormed the beachhead Malaya Zemlyaor Little Landacross the bay rom Novorossiysk. For its part in the libera-tion it was honoured with the title amanskoi.
Te 255th Brigade also took part in the landings and ghtingor the Crimea and ought alongside the 83 rd during theliberation o the Crimean Peninsula.
Ater Crimea the 255th Brigade took part in operations in thewestern Black Sea to take Varna and Burgas in Bulgaria in1944. It ended the war with the 37th Army in Bulgaria.
260th Naval INfaNtryBrIgadeTe 260th Naval Inantry was ormed in late 1942 rom the4th Naval Inantry Brigade by the Baltic Fleet. It containedthe 304th, 306th and 314th Naval Inantry battalions, an artil-lery battalion, a mortar battalion, a sapper company, signalsand medical units. Because the 260th Brigade was still underdirect command o the Navy, like the 115th Brigade, therecords o their service are patchy. However, in 1944 they
spearheaded the amphibious assault to outank the GermanIII SS-Panzerkorpson the Narva River. Tey, along with the115th Brigade, landed near Merkla on 14 February 1944 inthe rear ank o the Germans deending the line on the NarvaRiver, while the 2nd Shock Army advanced on the deendersront. Tere landing was hampered by poor communicationsand the landing was unable to take ull advantage o theiranking manoeuvre.
Tey were next recorded in action against the Finns takingpart in an amphibious landing near Vyborg on 20 June1944. From 27 September they spearheaded amphibiousoperations to clear the islands in the Gul o Riga. Tere they
ought alongside the Red Armys 8th and 109th Rie Corps.Fighting on the gul islands lasted until November 1944.
In April 1945 they took part in the last amphibious landingso Soviet orces on the eastern ront. On 25-26 April the260th Brigade ormed a composite regiment with elementso the 13th Guards Rie Corps and landed on FrishcheNehrung, the low sandy lowlands to the west o Knigsbergin East Prussia. Te 260th Brigade still had troops clearingthe area when the war ended in May 1945.

During the turbulent months o 1941 Naval manpower waspressed into service to halt the ascist tide. Naval InantryBattalions (Morskaya Pekhota Batalon) were ormed toprovide the Red Army with additional ghting units andto deend Soviet Naval bases. Later these were ormed intobrigades o three or more battalions.
Te separate Naval Inantry Battalions were ormed on a or-ganisation (or Shtaty) o the Navys own devising. However,by 1944 the ew Naval Inantry Brigades still operating aresubstantially reduced rom their original strength.

By landing rounds on a target quickly, the heavy mortars pinthe enemy down and allow the tanks to manoeuvre.
Teir heavy bombs are downright deadly. Tey have enoughexplosive to easily blow apart hastily-constructed deencesand even work well against hal-tracks and tank hunters.
In act our heavy mortars are so good that the Fascists

Te Great Patriotic War has taken the lives o millions odedicated socialist soldiers. While the Soviet Union is vast, even with the ull support o its people it cannot replacelosses on this scale.
Te valiant soviet rontovik is too valuable to waste withblunt tactics and is not to be thrown away meaninglessly
as in early years. You must use your soldiers wisely. Poundthe enemy with your artillery, hammer the ascists time andagain, then attack where the cracks appear. Do not stop untilthe Motherland has been liberated o those ascist dogs!

AmphibiOus Assault ScenariOsovIet forCe:Te 260th Naval Rie Brigade was typical o many brigadesraised in the desperate times in 1941 and 1942. Surplus
naval ocers and NCOs would be used to create what wereessentially small inantry divisions. Usually up to 50% o thetroops were also naval personnel with the remaining troopsbeing conscripts. Each brigade had its own scouts, sappers,Machine-gun company and artillery assets. As these unitshad naval experience, they were an obvious choice or am-phibious landing. Usually there were no dedicated landingcrat available and the Soviet Navy would requisition civiliancrat to land their troops. Because o the limits o these typeso crat, no weapon heavier than a Maksim HMG or mortarcould be landed with the troops.
All Soviet troops are Naval inantry rom this brieng (see
ollowing page).
germaN forCe:Te beaches o Estonia were deended by SS-KampgruppeKste. (Kste is German or coast.) Te ormation wasunusual in two ways. First, there were almost no Germansin it. It was made up primarily o volunteers rom variousEuropean nations, mostly Estonians, but also Norwegians,Danes and Dutch and other volunteers. Second, theEstnische SS-Freiwilligen Brigade (Estonia SS-VolunteerBrigade) was not indoctrinated or trained as an SS unit. It
was SS in name only.
All troops rom the 3. Estnische SS-Freiwilligen Brigade arerated Fearless rained. Other SS troops are as marked (seeollowing page).
laNdINgNearmereklaTe Soviet victory at Leningrad in January 1944 had thrownthe III SS-Panzerkorps back rom the historic city. Stalin
required the breakout to continue with a powerul ofen-sive aimed at liberating Estonia rom Geramn control. TeWehrmacht established a strong deensive belt at the Estonianborder using the Narva River to anchor its deence.
Ater utile attempts to break through the deences in headon assault, General Govorov o the Leningrad Front ordereda pincer attack to encircle the deensive line. A land orceconsisting o inantry and tanks would break through the
weakened southern ank o the deences and drive north-west, while the 115th and 260th Naval Rie brigades wouldland rom the Gul o Finland several kilometres west nearMerekla and drive south.
Te landing took place on the night o 13 February, ourdays ater the ull moon. Te Wehrmacht had learned o theplanned landing rom interrogating Soviet prisoners. It wasresisted by a combined orce o SS-Kampgruppe Kste andSS Nordlands Norge Regiment.
Historically things did not go well or the Soviets. Te assaultrom the south bogged down and never got near the meetingpoint designated or the landing orce. Te ew radios theamphibious troops had were either lost in the landing orsimply did not work. Te Soviet navy circled impotentlyout o range o the shore earing to re in support or landadditional troops without some denite contact with those
already landed.
