Zone Watch is a secure, online, community policing platform, designed to help police identify issues in specific
neighbourhoods or ‘zones’. The program encourages online discussions and collaboration, to help community members and the police service work together towards better crime prevention.
Zone Watch fills a gap in communication between the public and the police. Police officers dedicated to service specific areas of the community are engaged online directly with the people within the neighborhoods they serve. Concerned citizens can give officers support on the streets - and this helps build trust between the police service and the community.
We’re already a pretty strapped police service,
so this kind of help is much needed and much
appreciated,” Said Thunder Bay Police Chief JP Levesque during the first Zone Watch training session.
Ambassadors from the neighbourhoods in the region have to apply to be approved to participate in the program.
Citizens will have the chance to step up and
represent their neighbourhoods,” said Thunder
Bay Executive Officer Chris Adams. “They’re our
eyes and ears on what’s going on out there. This
takes it that next step. People are busy. They
have lives. They work, but wow, they’re using
smartphones – iPhones, Blackberries, Android
devices; they’re using the web.
With the Zone Watch system, community members can have meaningful online conversations in the same manner they use existing social media platforms. Community members can access Zone Watch from their mobile devices, smartphones, tablets, or desktops and provide their feedback in a timely manner, at their convenience.
