Fatigue is one of the biggest killers on Victorian roads - Ross Burbidge

    By Yasemin Talat

Police will saturate roads across Melton and the state this Easter long weekend in an attempt to curb the rising road toll.

Operation Crossroads runs from ursday until Monday with police targeting the key contributing factors to road trauma: speed, alcohol and drug impairment, distracted drivers, fatigue and failing to wear a seatbelt.

Senior Sergeant Ross Burbidge, of Melton police, said Easter was an especially high-risk period on the roads with about 9000 trac

oences detected across the state during Easter 2014.

Senior Sergeant Burbidge said he doesnt want to see the same thing again this year. He urged drivers to stay under the speed limit, not drink or take drugs, leave their mobile phone out of reach, always wear a seatbelt and rest before long trips.

Fatigue is one of the biggest killers on Victorian roads, he said. Plan your journey when travelling long distances and take at least a 15-minute break at least every two hours, and dont drive if youre tired.

people injured from 1017 injury collisions. Road trauma isnt just about the people who die, its about the enormous impact on the community, from the family members, to the emergency service workers who have to deal with these tragedies on a daily basis, to the police who have to deliver the devastating news to loved ones, Senior Sergeant Burbidge said.

He said the whole community had a role to play in reducing road trauma.

And he reminded drivers: You can be caught anywhere, at any time.

Police are on the hunt for three men who robbed an elderly Ballan couple at knifepoint last Monday.

e couple were tied up in their Ballan home while three armed robbers stole guns and cash about 9am.

e man and woman, both in their 80s, were in bed when the three men entered their Ballan-Greendale Road property.

e couple received minor injuries during the incident and were treated by paramedics at the scene.

Police said the couple was then taken to Ballan Hospital as a precaution.

Ballarat polices Detective Senior Sergeant David Hermit said the robbers were in and out of the house in a short period of time.

We have no specic description of the vehicle weve been told they le in a dark-coloured sedan, Detective Senior Sergeant Hermit said.

He said the couple were shaken following the incident.

About three police cars and an ambulance were on the scene about 10am and the Moorabool police crime investigation unit took statements from the couple.

e federal government has thrown a two-year lifeline to homelessness services.

Social Services Minister Scott Morrison last week announced $230 million in funding for the National Partnership Agreement on Homelessness (NPAH) and said priority would be given to services working with victims of family violence and homeless youth under 18.

We have brought forward this announcement ahead of the May budget to give providers of homelessness services across Australia more certainty, enabling them to get on with their work of helping some of our most

security as well as the important promise of ongoing services for women and children in crisis, Dr Gregory said.

North and West Homelessness Network co- ordinator Sarah Langmore also welcomed the decision.

Its very hard to provide a continuity of services when theres no conrmation of funding, she said. We support thousands of individuals and households in the west and those services are primarily dependent on [NPAH] funding.

Ms Langmore said about 150 families and individuals presented every month seeking help for homelessness.

vulnerable people, Mr Morrison said.Womens Health West (WHW) chief

executive Robyn Gregory said key programs to divert women away from homelessness would have ended without the funding.

In the past nancial year, WHW used NPAH funds to provide a 24-hour crisis response for 6209 women, install 187 security measures to improve the safety of 85 women and 111 children, and provide court support to 62 women to obtain intervention orders which forced the perpetrators of family violence to leave the family home.

While this extension is more limited than our request, the news gives our sta some

Mr Morrison called on state and territory governments to match the funding to allow for continuity of homelessness services across Australia.

But state Housing Minister Martin Foley said the Victorian government had not received details of the proposed federal package.

e Andrews Labor government committed to a three-year agreement to provide more certainty and we call on the federal government to match the three years, Mr Foley said.

Well also work with the federal government to understand what this announcement means for services and our most vulnerable as there has been very little consultation to date.

e Bacchus Marsh re brigade will this week obtain new equipment thanks to a generous donation.

Foodworks Bacchus Marsh has given $3000 to the brigade to help it buy a gas detector.

Bacchus Marsh captain Nathan Ractlie said the gas detector was an extremely important piece of equipment needed by the brigade.

Its to monitor atmospheric conditions [when] reghters are working in toxic environments, Mr Ractlie said.

He said the brigade needed important materials and equipment so it could better serve the community.

e brigade identied needed items and bought them when money became available through donations and sponsorship.

Mr Ractlie said it was through donations and sponsors such as Foodworks Bacchus

Marsh that the brigade was able to protect the community.

e brigade would not be able to function without people and donations like this; it just wouldnt happen, he said.

The site will be extensively landscaped with trees, garden, grassed areas and spectator viewing mounds. A 46-year-old Melton West man was found dead inside his four-wheel-drive on Sunday aer it veered o the Western Freeway and tumbled into Toolern Creek near Melton Botanic Garden.

e incident is believed to have occurred in the early hours of the morning, but it wasnt until 11.30am that the wreckage of the Toyota Landcruiser was spotted by passers-by.

Police believe the vehicle may have clipped the roads railing before ipping down the embankment. It was partially submerged in the water when found.

e driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, died at the scene.

Police are now investigating whether speed, fatigue, drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.

Victoria Polices Acting Senior Sergeant Liam Gardner said these factors were not a good mix. Speed, alcohol or drugs none of those things mix with driving. He said it was a timely reminder leading into Easter for drivers to take more care on the roads.

e death of the man takes the states annual road toll to 70, three more than at the same time last year.

Melton police are still investigating the circumstances of the accident and are keen to speak to any witnesses.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make a condential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Moorabool and Melton councils are encouraging their communities to take on the Premiers Active April challenge.

In Active April, starting tomorrow, Premier Daniel Andrews is encouraging everyone to do 30 minutes of physical activity every day.

Moorabool mayor Paul Tatchell said the challenge provided a great opportunity to make exercise a regular part of the day. He said the council was getting behind the initiative and he hoped the community would jump on board.

Moorabool council will host a local pram walk in Bacchus Marsh on April 20.

As well as hitting the 30 minutes of activity for that day, the walk will give people a chance to meet new people and do something healthy, Cr Tatchell said. All interested playgroups and

local mums, dads and carers with or without prams are invited to come along for the walk.

Melton council will host an Active April Fun Day at Willows Historical Park from 10am-2pm on April 9. Activities will include mini-golf, ball games, giant chess, cricket activities and face painting for children.

People taking part in Active April can download the ocial app to track their physical activity. By registering for Active April, participants also receive oers such as 10 free YMCA passes.

To register and for more information, visit www.activeapril.vic.gov.au.

Ambulance response times for critically ill Melton patients have dramatically increased since 2008, a report released this month reveals.

e Working With Paramedics To End e Ambulance Crisis interim report compared average response times in 2013-14 with those in 2008-09.

Only 58 per cent of code 1 calls were responded to within 15 minutes (the state governments benchmark) in 2013-14, compared with 75 per cent in 2008-09. e average Melton response time increased from 12.32 minutes to 15.40 minutes in the past nancial year.

e Ambulance Performance and Policy Consultative Committee, chaired by the Ambulance Services Minister Jill Hennessy, is seeking feedback on its proposed reforms from paramedics and the community, with nal recommendations to be provided to the state government by the end of the year.

Population growth, changing demographics, chronic illness and high community expectations are increasing the demand on health services including ambulance services, the interim report states.

is demand is expected to continue to grow as these factors become more pronounced.

In the metropolitan region, the number of code 1 emergencies has increased by 6.4

    Ambo response times lengthen

per cent each year, with codes 2 and 3 calls increasing by 3.5 per cent.

e interim report states more work is required to better understand the drivers of demand growth and the strong growth in code 1 incidents relative to code 2 and code 3.

Critically ill Melton patients were one of Melbournes worst serviced. In Nillumbik (north-east of the city), 47 per cent of code 1

calls received an ambulance within 15 minutes in 2014. In Cardinia (in the citys east) and Melton, 58 per cent of Code 1s were responded to in the same timeframe.

A former Melton paramedic who didnt want to be named told Star Weekly that resourcing Star Weekly that resourcing Star Weeklywas a huge issue in the municipality.

e number of resources covering a large population in a large geographical area is a problem, the paramedic said.

And there isnt a local hospital for us to take patients to. We are commuting signicant distances in our geographical area.

If we get ramped up in hospitals or diverted, that means there are no ambulances in the area.

Easter is just around the corner and that means that The Royal Childrens Hospital Good Friday Appeal is only a few, short days away. Each year, the Appeal helps raise much needed funds for equipment, research and education to support the work of The Royal Childrens Hospital.

I know that many Melton residents are doing it tough, but Id still like to encourage everyone to give what they can to this extremely worthwhile cause. The Royal Childrens Hospital plays a key role in improving the wellbeing of children across Melbourne and Victoria, and Im sure we all know families whose lives have been touched by the good work the Hospital does.

Easter is also the time of year when we head off on those last family holidays before the winter chill sets in; a time when drivers must be extra careful on our roads. Last year, 19

Allison Falzon has scored $1000 for her sons school as one of ve winners across Australia in a national writing competition.

Ms Falzon, whose son Mason goes to St Anthonys Primary School in Melton South, entered the competition for fun aer seeing it pop up on her Facebook feed.

e nation-wide competition, run by pen company Bic, surveyed teachers and parents about how they encouraged fun handwriting.

e campaign Fight for your write was aimed at raising awareness of the falling rate of literacy and to highlight the importance of handwriting.

Five winners were announced last week, including Ms Falzon, from Mount Cottrell, who received a $1000 cheque for St Anthonys

Primary School and $150 of Bic stationery for sons Mason and Jakim.

Ms Falzon said she was very surprised by the win and happy to help Masons school.

Her winning entry highlighted what she and her family did to encourage fun handwriting in their home, in less than 25 words.

Ms Falzon said she and her husband and sons made up stories by adding a few words each. e boys would then copy what had been written and draw pictures to complete the story.

e junior school council at Melton South Primary hosted its rst fundraising event for the year last week, helping to do its bit for the Good Friday Appeal.

Pupils were invited to come to school out of uniform and with a gold coin donation.

e casual dress day was a hit with the pupils, who helped the school raise about $720 for the appeal.

Grade 6 teacher Ben Bykersma said the contributions of all involved had helped raise a sizeable sum.

He said casual days were very, very popular as the pupils loved to come to school out of uniform. is year the junior school council is about four times bigger than in previous years due to a strong interest from pupils in joining.

About 40 pupils from grade 5 and 6 make up the council, which previously has had only a dozen pupils on board.

Mr Bykersma said the schools leadership program encouraged pupils to take on roles with the junior school council, the choir and sports so as to experience responsibility and leadership.

He said the eagerness of pupils to be involved was amazing and many applications had been received to join the council.

e junior school council is made up of three sub-committees, which look aer fundraisers, school assemblies and play-time activities for younger pupils.

Joan Gauci Quigley is gearing up to host Australias Biggest Morning Tea, again.

e Bacchus Marsh resident and one of the states most successful fundraisers for the Cancer Council Victoria will host her second morning tea next month.

And internet sensation, Sunshine grandmother Nonna Paola, will be Ms Quigleys special guest.

Ms Quigley, who has a family history with cancer, has raised more than $150,000 with Girls Night In for the Cancer Council Victoria. She said she felt it was time she hosted a morning function. Although her previous morning tea was more mellow than Girls Night In, it was a way for her to inject extra money into the council and raise extra awareness.

Ms Quigley raised about $1000 at last years morning tea and is hoping to beat that this year.

Stretched across a 52-metre frontage, this handsome house ts in nicely in Killarney Lakes estate which is home to quality dwellings on big blocks. Its ne exterior references a period feel but inside its salute to earlier days is clearly seen in stepped cornices, corbelled arches, bay windows and dado rails bisecting soft-burgundy and cream paintwork.

The house, on a massive 4003 square metres, is all about space with a big lounge room where the grey ironbark oorboards are a real treat, and the big

family hub around the (big) kitchen. The sitting zone in here has a wood heater and access to a (really big) gabled pergola over concrete paving.

The kitchen has American oak cupboards and lots of them black granite benchtops, subway-laid splashback tiles in cream, a dishwasher and large walk-in pantry; the sink sits in a bay and has views of the pergola and backyard beyond.

A tiled hallway from the meals area heads to the main bedroom with tted walk-in robe and an en suite with an oak/

granite vanity unit and burgundy and cream decor. Next door, theres a laundry with walk-in storage closet.

At the opposite end of the house, theres a tiled childrens lounge room, a powder room, three bedrooms with mirrored robes, and the main bathroom decked out the same as the smaller and with a restored clawfoot bath.

Up polished oak stairs from the childrens lounge room, theres an enormous, carpeted living area with vaulted ceiling and dormer windows. This lends itself to many purposes, not least
