M.Tech. Specializations: A deciding factor for choosing an engineeringM.Tech. Specializations: A deciding factor for choosing an engineeringbranchbranch
71kLikeLike
The EAMCET counseling notification would be soon announced and the time has come for an engineering
aspirant to make a choice of his life... to choose a branch of his interest or a branch, which gives him a bright
career.
In this scenario, one doubt that always arises in the mind of a student or parent is to why are almost 85% of the
seats in our engineering colleges are only of what so called 'famous' branches like Computer Science,
Electronics and Communication, Electrical, Mechanical and Civil and why not other specialisations which total
more than 40 including marine, mining, metallurgy, textile etc.
The reasons for the exorbitant seats of famous branches may be many, while some may be convincing and
others may not be. Let us analyse the reasons for considering M.Tech. specializations as one of the criteria to
choose an engineering branch. The M.Tech. specialization in the context of engineering counselling can be a
deciding factor for the student to chose a branch. For example, M. Tech. specialisations in Computer Science
and Engineering include Information security, Software engineering, Image processing, Artificial Intelligence,
Advanced Computing, Programming languages. A B.Tech. graduate in Computer Science has a broad scope to
chose any one of these specializations in the M.Tech level. A Civil Engineering graduate has wide
specializations in M.Tech like Transportation, Construction Technology and Management, Geotechnical
Engineering, Remote sensing & GIS, Earthquake Engineering, Urban Planning, Disaster Assessment and
Mitigation etc. This is also true for all other famous branches.
In the trend of hacking online accounts and emails, a student who shows interest in pursuing information
security may take Computer Science branch in the graduation level and then proceed to M.Tech with
specialization in Information Security. If a student aims to do research in earth quakes may take Civil
Engineering in the graduation level and then M.Tech in Earthquake Engineering and further pursue research
on earthquakes. Similarly, if a student who is interested in mechanics takes CSE in B.Tech, he/she may not
fulfill his interests, as he cannot pursue his /her interested subject (Mechanics) at postgraduate level. Taking a
specialised degree in the graduation level itself may minimise the career scope by lessoning the areas of
specialization and research. So by knowing various specializations in M.Tech in the relevant branches, the
student or parent may have a first hand knowledge on the various options which may lead to a decision in
choosing the branch.
Therefore, decide your area of interest, learn about the list of M.Tech specialisations available for each branch
and choose the branch that most attracts you.
