    WelcometoyourArcadiaUniversitycourse,MU164.OLBeginningGuitarClass.Thegeneralfocusof

    thecourseistoprovideyouwiththefundamentalsofperformingguitarinasoloand/orensemble

    situationthatemphasizestodayscontemporarymusic.Technique,Theory,EarTraining,Reading(both

    Tablatureandconventionnotation),Repertoire,Improvisation,MusicalIdioms,Compositionand

    Interpretationwillbeincluded.

    Thiscourseisdesignedtoenhancethemusicalskillsandperspectiveofthestudent.Creativeandpracticaluseofmaterialsnecessaryforperformanceonguitarwillbeexplored.

    Youwillneedanelectronictuner,capo,extrastrings,PinpullerPegwinder,extrastringpins,Picks(of

    differentthicknesses),Tool(toadjusttheTrussRod),andasmall(pocketsize)MusicDictionary.A

    completelistandexplanationisintheMaterials.pdf.FileattachedToUnit1.

    Norequiredtextbookforthiscourse.YouwilluseArcadia'sonlinedatabasesandotherwebresources.

    Sincethiscourseisbeingdeliveredonline,yourcomputersystemwillneedtomeetspecifichardware

    andsoftwarerequirements.Forthiscourse,youwillneedtohaveaccesstoMicrosoftOffice,or

    softwarethatcanauthorMSOfficeformatslikeGoogleDocsorOpenOffice.WidowsMediaplayerand

    /oriTunesand/orQuickTime.Additionally,wewillbeusingothersoftwarepackages,butI'vetriedto

    Introduction

    Thiscourseisbeingpresentedinanonlinefashion.Itisimportantthatyouloginonaregularbasis(daily

    ifpossible)andworkonaconsistentbasiswiththevideotutorials ,MIDIfilesandSONGexamplesto

    completeyourrequirements.Sincewearenotmeetingfacetoface,itwillbeimperativethatyou

    participateonceaweekviaSkypeconferenceswithyourinstructor.Also,theCyberCafeisavailablefor

    youtodevelopcommunityoutsideofthecoursecontent.

    Youwillneedtobeselfmotivatedandtrytostayasorganizedaspossible;developingaschedulewould

    beagoodidea.Ialsosuggestthatyoulogininthebeginningoftheweek(astheweeklylessonsareposted)anddownloadallassignments(theywillbeinaPDFformatandMIDIfiles)Thiswillallowyouto

    practicewithouthavingtoaccesstheInternetfortheassignments.

    RequirementsfortheSKYPElessonevaluation

    1. Youwillbeevaluatedonaweeklybasishowwellyoucanperformthatunitsfingerexerciseforindependenceofthelefthand,fingerplacement,dexterity,speedandplectrumTechnique.

    2. YouarerequiredtomemorizethatunitschordsandplayalongwiththeMIDIfile(s).TherewillbeanumberofTempos(relativespeedsoftheMIDIfile)availableforyou(slow,medium,fast).

    YouwillnotbeevaluatedonhowfastyouplaytheChordexercisebuthowwellyoucan

    transitionbetweenthechordsinasmoothandefficientnature.

    3. TherewillbeweeklyTheoryassignments,bothwrittenandhaveanoralnature.Iwillbeaskingquestionsthatrelatetothatunitswork.Youwillbeevaluatedonhowefficientlyandsuccinct

    yourresponsesaretothequestionathand.

    4. Attheendofeveryunit(exceptUnit1)willbesongexamplesandsongstylesthatwillutilizethatweeksfingerandchordexercises.Youwillbeexpectedtoplaythesesongs(orpartsof)

    bothwiththeoriginalrecordedversionandwithout.

    DiscussionEtiquette

    Inthiscourse,Iwelcomethecreationofadialoguethatisopen,thoughtful,andfoundedonthebasisof

    yourwork.Attimes,someofyouwillnotagreeonthepositionsthataretakenintheforum.Thereisa

    lotofmisinformationoutinthecloudinreferencetoguitarandcontemporarymusic.Iplantodebunk

    alotofit.Thisdiversityiswelcomed.However,eachstudentmustexerciserespectforthethoughtsandcommentsthatarepostedbytheirpeers.Ifanypostedcommentsareinappropriateorofanoffensive

    nature,theywillberemovedfromtheforumandIwilladdresstheissuewiththeauthorofthecontent.
