A country's heritage is best preserved in its
antiquities and museums and
archaeological/heritage sites contribute a lot
in promoting a country's tourism.
Having said that, in an environment in which
museums are increasingly expected to
illustrate their public value and continued
relevance, sending out the right message is
more important than ever.
The need of the hour is a digital platform that
will amalgamate, assimilate and disseminate
information based on the specific needs of
this industry. Such a platform derives from
inputs from the stalwarts and relevant
sources from this field. The idea being to
promote culture and heritage of a country
thereby inviting footfalls and highlighting the
major attractions.

industry development from its very beginnings to
the present day. It showcases 130 years of auto

All nine levels in the museum aim at transporting

experience of the automotive trends of that
period. The museum management puts in extra
effort to make the museum visit for visitors of
different age groups and abilities meaningful and
engaging. There are special services for children
and school classes which include free entry for
children, special “discovery books”, free audio

The Museums Association of India held its 69th
annual conference in the Shree Swaminarayan
Temple Museum, Ahmedabad on Jan.2729,
2017. It was attended by 80 plus delegates from
different parts of India. Shri Bagrshwar Jha,
Curator and Miss Shikha Verma, Asstt. Curator of
Sulabh International Museum of Toilets
represented their museum. H.H. Tejenderprasadji,
the sixth generation head of the Swaminarayan
cult graced the occasion while the Mayor of
Ahmedabad was the chief guest. On Jan. 27, the
Mayor honoured Shri Bageshwar Jha with the
Lifetime Achievement Award2016 for his
contribution to the museum field. Shri Jha was
presented a memento and a shawl amid a
thunderous applause by the audience.
Immediately after that brief investiture
ceremony, both H.H. Tejenderprasadji Maharaj
and the Mayor of Ahmedabad along with Dr. Mani,
Director General, National Museum, Dr. P.K.
Sharma and Dr. Anand Burdhan, President and
Secretary respectively of the Museums
Association of India released the book, Museum
Musings:Hail Heritage, authored by Shri
Bageshwar Jha.
In the afternoon academic session of the secondday (Jan 28), presided over by Shri S.K. Pathak,Shri Bageshwar Jha made a presentationentitled MuseoSpiritualism. The paper wasbased on the allotted theme. Shri Jha arguedthat whether it is a temple or a museum, theremust be adequate number of toilets for thedevotees/visitors to ensure sanctity of the placeincluding a hygienic ecology. He also suggestedboth institutions to come together to enhancetheir outreach. Like museotourism, we can alsoexperiment with museospiritualism. Shri Jhasuggested that like the Buddha circuit and theRamayana Circuit, one can also go for museotemple circuit. Since museotourism and museohealthcare have been increasing footfalls, themuseospiritualism may also open a new vistabenefiting both the institutions, Shri Jha added.

Interview
3. What is your favorite part about workingin the Museum?A curator is a person who looks aftereverything that is happening at the museum. Iam involved with all the activities of themuseum, from collection of toilet models totheir conservation and display. My favoritepart is making everybody aware of theimportance of sanitation and hygiene anddoing that in an innovative way.
4. Why do you believe museums arevaluable in today’s world?Today when tourists and even locals set out toexplore and travel nobody has time to visit allthe popular historical places, hence to havecompact and complete information about anyplace, museums have become a gotodestination for that.Earlier museum going was a leisure now it hasbecome almost necessary if you want togather detailed and fast information about anycountry, city, town etc.In a nutshell museum is a microunit thatmirrors the whole evolution of society. Afamous tourist saying goes like “if you go to acountry and have no time to visit all theplaces, atleast see the national museum ofthat country”.

1. What is the nature of yourmuseum?Ours is a Sanitation and Hygiene
Museum. A first of its kind that
showcases the history of toilet system
from 2500 B.C. to modern age.
2. Can you tell us a bit about yourposition and what you do at theMuseum?B.JHA. Trained museologist from
national museum institute, new Delhi
and conservator from government
museum Chennai with first class post
graduation in ancient Indian history. I
have been curator at this museum since
2001.
6. What is your favorite object in thecollection and why? 1. French bookshelf type toilet. The French would build a big book and name itafter a famous English classic and on this bookconstruct a toilet to shame British. This practicehighlights the cultural animosity between twonations.2. A throne like chamber of French emperorLouis XIV who while using it simultaneouslygave audience to select people for his politics. Thus sought official matters in the toilet.
7. What would you like visitors to gain from avisit to the museum?Toilet is as necessary as kitchen in home and itshould be as clean. We would like to imparthygiene knowledge to as many people as wecan. Half of india’s population, which is about 60crore people indulge in open defecation. And ofthe other half very few have access to cleantoilets. Hence making toilets is not enough, weshould also create awareness about need oftoilets and proper sanitation and harmful effectsof unhygienic practices.

The two significant projects that we

account of toilet systems from the
ancient times and over 5000 people
visit the center daily. It has become a
museum in itself that showcases
development in sanitation and toilet
department over ages.
2. Started sulabh school club that make
school children and medical students
aware of the importance of sanitation.
School and medical students spend a
day at the sulabh campus and witness
wash campaign.
Sulabh through this pioneer wash
campaign is acting like a preventive
medicine through its hygiene session.
8. How important is in your view, digitalpresence for the museums? Have you takento social media for promotion of yourmuseum?Sulabh international museum of toilets have theirown website and are active on facebook.Everyday happenings of the museum are put onfacebook on day to day basis.
