GOOGLE+ a social networking project
h7p://www.google.com/+/learnmore/
What is Google+ • Google’s latest a7empt to create a social network that rivals Facebook.
– Launched on June 28, 2011 with a private beta – Google+ is now open to all
• Google+ is designed to be “an extension of Google itself” – Google changed its navigaMon bar to link to the user’s Google+ profile and added the noMficaMon icon, which
funcMons like Facebook noMficaMons
• Google’s history with social media – Orkut – Youtube – Google Wave – GoogleBuzz
• Google+ is a collecMon of different social products. – Stream (a newsfeed) – Huddle (a group texMng service) – Circles (a friend management service) – Hangouts (a video chat service) – Sparks (a recommendaMon engine) – Photos
In 3 weeks Google+ has amassed more than 10
million users, and its users are sharing more than 1 billion pieces of content
daily.
Circles • The focus of this social project is not on sharing with a mass group of friends, but
on targeted sharing with your various social groups.
• Current friend lists (via FB & Twi7er) are “awkward and not rewarding to use”. • Google+ Circles is an a7empt to address that challenge. The HTML5 system allows users to drag-‐and-‐drop their friends into different social circles for friends, family, classmates, co-‐workers and other custom groups. Users can drag groups of friends in and out of these circles.
Hangouts • New video chat feature & is hailed as one of the most interesMng aspects of
Google+ • Users click “start a hangout” and they’re instantly in a video chat room alone. At
the same Mme, a message goes out to their social circles, lebng them know that their friend is “hanging out”
• Hangouts are kept within one window & the window automaMcally updates the
chat screen to whoever is currently talking – Max number of users in any video Hangout is 10, though people can get on a
waitlist – Users can engage with the same content at the same Mme i.e. Youtube
Hangouts
Sparks • To spur sharing, Google has created a recommenda;on engine for finding interesMng content. Sparks provides a collecMon of arMcles, videos, photos etc. grouped by interest. • The system is algorithmic & relies on info from Google Search as well as what is being shared via Google+ & +1 bu>ons. • The goal is to make it dead-‐simple for users to explore their interests and share what they find with their friends. • Google+ is a>emp;ng to become the best place to share & find content. • Sparks incorporates key features currently found on other sites such as Twi7er & Tumblr
More on Google+
The +1 bu>on is shorthand for "you should check this out." Click +1 to publicly give something your stamp of approval.
Google+ comes with a fully-‐built photo albums product, powered by the technology behind Picasa.
Android app (iPhone app to follow) – includes a photo sync to your desktop & group texMng (Huddle)
Google+ and Businesses • A few businesses are already on Google+ but new companies are not allowed to sign up yet • A new business plaGorm is in the works and should begin beta tesMng next month
Conclusion • Similar to Gmail’s rollout. • Google+ is the company’s response to the rise of Facebook.
– The 2 companies are in compeMMon for talent, page views & consumers. While Google controls the search market and has a strong presence on mobile with Android, it hasn’t been able to crack the social nut.
– Its most successful social product, YouTube, had to be acquired, is one the most expensive acquisiMon Google has made.
“Google no longer gets a free pass in social. It must prove that it can draw users and keep them engaged in a way that doesn’t replicate Facebook or Twi7er’s funcMonality. Only Mme will tell if Google has finally found its magical arrow.”
What some are saying about Google+… “Google+ is a much cleaner way to selecMvely share data with others. As Google integrates more of their other cloud products, like Documents, Calendar, and Reader, you’re going to see it become one of the primary means of absorbing the data streaming from the Internet and sharing it with others.” ~ Jason Poggioli “If Facebook and Twi7er had a baby, they’d call it Google+.” ~ Olaf Wempe
