Nagasaki is located in the western part of Japan. It is very close to the Korean Peninsula and China. It used to be the main gateway for exchange with East Asian countries.

The population of Nagasaki is about 1,415,000. In general, the climate of Nagasaki is mild. The average annual temperature is 17.4°C. There are many islands and hills in Nagasaki and the coastline is irregular. So the climatic conditions are different from region to region.

3 Geographic Features 地理的特徴
Introduction Nagasaki has the largest number of islands in Japan. It also has the second longest coastline. There are 971 islands and the coastline is 4,184 kilometers long.
長崎には日本で最もたくさんの島があります。海岸線の長さも日本で二番目です。971の島があり、海岸線の長さは4,184 kmです。

There are 971 islands in Nagasaki. Many islands such as Kujukushima, Goto, Iki and Tsushima are blessed with natural beauty. Ten natural parks, including national parks, are spread across the prefecture. The surrounding coastline is irregular with peninsulas, bays and coves. The total length of the coastline is 4,184 kilometers, which is the second longest in Japan.

Nagasaki produces traditional handicrafts such as glassware and
ceramic ware. Both of them were introduced to Nagasaki by foreigners.
長崎はガラス製品や陶磁器のような伝統工芸品の産地です。どちらも外国人によって長崎へ伝えられました。
Further Information
Nagasaki produces glassware known as Nagasaki Vidro and ceramic ware including porcelain such as Hasami Yaki or Mikawachi Yaki. The Portuguese introduced glassware to the Japanese people. Korean potters introduced the art of making ceramics to Nagasaki.

Introduction
Potatoes are one of the main agricultural products in Nagasaki. They were introduced to Japan through Nagasaki in the 17th century.

Nagasaki is the second largest producer of potatoes in Japan. In
the 17th century, the Dutch brought potatoes to Nagasaki and later they were grown all over Japan. Other vegetables such as onions, carrots and tomatoes were also introduced to Japan through Nagasaki.

In the late 17th century, marine products collected from all over
Japan were packaged in straw bags and were exported to China. They were called Tawaramono and were shipped from Nagasaki Harbor. Today, Nagasaki is one of the largest producers of marine products in Japan.

8 Handmade Somen and Udon 手延べ素麺とうどん
Introduction
Somen and udon are made from wheat flour. Shimabara
handmade somen and Goto handmade udon are famous in Nagasaki.
素麺とうどんは小麦粉から作られます。長崎では島原手延べ素麺と五島手延べうどんが有名です。
Further Information
Somen is a very thin white noodle made from wheat flour.
Generally udon is a thicker noodle. But Goto handmade udon looks like somen. Both of them are stretched by hand. Shimabara handmade somen and Goto handmade udon are famous for their high quality.
素麺は小麦粉で作られた細い白い麺です。一般的にうどんはもっと太い麺です。しかし、五島手延べうどんは素麺に似ています。どちらも手で延ばされます。島原手延べ素麺と五島手延べうどんは、質の高さで有名です。

9 Camellia Oil from the Goto Islands 五島列島の椿油
Introduction We can see a lot of camellias on the Goto Islands. Camellia oil is
made by pressing the seeds of the camellia flower. Camellia oil from the Goto Islands is valued for its high quality.
Further Information
Camellia oil has been used for centuries for hair care, skin care and cooking. The oil is pale yellow in color and has a sweet scent. It can moisturize dry hair and keep hair shiny and healthy. One of the biggest cosmetics makers in Japan uses camellia oil from the Goto Islands as an ingredient in their shampoo. Camellia oil is also used in stretching Goto handmade udon, so the udon smells slightly sweet.
五島列島では、たくさんの椿を見ることができます。椿油は椿の実を絞って作られます。五島の椿油は品質の良さで高い評価を受けています。

10 Ruins of Harunotsuji 原の辻遺跡
Introduction The ruins of Harunotsuji are located in Iki City and are designated as a National Historic Site. Iki Island was situated along the main route of Japan’s interaction with the Korean Peninsula and China.
原の辻遺跡は壱岐市にあり、国の特別史跡に指定されています。壱岐島は日本と朝鮮半島や中国との交流の主要な経路にありました。

The islands of Iki and Tsushima were vital to trade and communication with the Korean Peninsula and China. The ruins of Harunotsuji are regarded as the site of the capital of Iki, a country that existed in ancient times. It was described in a Chinese historical text, the Records of Three Kingdoms. Ancient Chinese coins and Korean earthenware were discovered in the ruins.

11 Diplomatic Delegations to China 遣隋使／遣唐使
Introduction The first diplomatic delegation left Japan for China about 1,400 years ago. Their main purpose was to study China’s advanced culture.
最初の外交派遣団はおよそ 1,400 年前に日本から中国へ旅立ちました。主な目的は中国の進んだ文化を研究することでした。

In ancient times, diplomatic delegations were sent to the Sui and Tang Dynasties in China via Iki, Tsushima, and the Goto Islands. By the end of the 9th century, such missions were sent to China many times. The purpose of such diplomatic missions was to study and learn from Chinese culture.
昔、中国の隋王朝や唐王朝への外交派遣団は壱岐、対馬、五島を経由して派遣されました。そのような使節団が 9 世紀の終わりまでに何度も中国へ派遣されました。この使節団の目的は中国の文化を研究し、そこから学ぶことでした。

12 Korean Envoys 朝鮮通信使
朝鮮国信使絵巻（対馬歴史民俗資料館蔵） Introduction
During the Edo Period, Korean envoys passed through Tsushima on the way to Edo. The So family in Tsushima welcomed them and played an important role in diplomacy between Korea and Japan.
江戸時代、朝鮮通信使は江戸への途上対馬を通りました。対馬の宗氏は彼らを迎え入れ、朝鮮と日本との外交で重要な役割を果たしました。

During the Edo Period, the Joseon Dynasty sent Korean envoys to Japan twelve times. They passed through Tsushima on the way to Edo. The So family in Tsushima welcomed them and played an important role in diplomacy between Korea and Japan. The people of Tsushima continue to take part in economic and cultural exchange projects with the people of South Korea.

13 Sofukuji Temple 崇福寺
Introduction
Sofukuji Temple was built by a Chinese monk who settled in Nagasaki during the Edo period. Two of the three National Treasures in Nagasaki are in this temple.
崇福寺は江戸時代、長崎に定住した中国人の僧によって建てられました。長崎にある三つの国宝のうち二つがこの寺の中にあります。

During the Edo period, a lot of Chinese ships came to Nagasaki. Sofukuji Temple was built by a Chinese monk who settled in Nagasaki. The Chinese Bon Festival is held here and Chinese people come from all over Japan to participate in the traditional event.
江戸時代に、多くの中国からの船が長崎に来航しました。崇福寺は長崎に定住した中国人の僧によって建てられました。ここで中国盆の行事が開かれ、日本中から中国系の人々が集まってこの伝統行事に参加します。

Introduction Dejima was a small man-made island in Nagasaki Harbor. There were houses for foreigners on the island. It was Japan’s window to the world during the Edo period.
出島は長崎港に浮かぶ小さな人工の島でした。出島には外国人のための住宅がありました。出島は江戸時代に世界に開かれた日本の窓でした。
Further Information
Dejima was a small artificial island in Nagasaki Harbor. Houses for the Portuguese were built there and later the Dutch came to live on it. Dejima was one of the few places for trade and exchange with foreigners during the Edo period. It played an important role in the development of culture, industry and science in Japan.
出島は長崎港に浮かぶ小さな人工の島でした。出島にはポルトガル人のための住居が建てられ、その後オランダ人が住むようになりました。江戸時代、出島は外国人との貿易や交流ができる数少ない場所の一つでした。出島は日本における文化、産業、科学の発達において重要な役割を果たしました。

15 Hirado Dutch Trading House 平戸オランダ商館
Introduction From the late 16th century to the early 17th century, Hirado was the center of foreign trade in Japan. The Dutch East India Company built a trading house there as a base for trading in East Asia.
16 世紀後半から 17 世紀初頭にかけて、平戸は日本における海外貿易の中心でした。オランダ東インド会社は東アジアにおける貿易の拠点として、平戸に商館を建てました。
Further Information
From the late 16th century to the early 17th century, the Matsuura family in Hirado traded with Korea and China. During the Edo period, the amount of foreign trade increased. The Dutch East India Company built a trading house there for trade in East Asia. In 1641, the trading house was moved to Dejima in Nagasaki.
16 世紀後半から 17 世紀初頭にかけて、平戸の松浦氏は朝鮮や中国と貿易をしていました。江戸時代には、海外貿易の量も増加しました。オランダ東インド会社は東アジアにおける貿易のために、ここに商館を建てました。1641 年にこの商館は長崎の出島に移転されました。

16 Nagasaki Airport 長崎空港
Introduction Nagasaki Airport was built on an island in Omura Bay and opened in 1975. It is the first offshore airport in the world.
長崎空港は大村湾に浮かぶ島の上に建設され、1975 年に開港しました。世界初の海上空港です。

Nagasaki Airport in Omura City opened as the world’s first offshore airport. It is an international airport with service to China and South Korea. The airport is conveniently located in the center of the prefecture, and millions of passengers use it every year.

Nagasaki City is surrounded by hills, and a lot of buildings and houses were built on them. At night the buildings and houses light up the city. The night view of Nagasaki City was acknowledged as one of the new three great night views of the world at the “Night View Summit” held in Nagasaki City in 2012.

Introduction Glover Garden is an exotic tourist spot. In the 19th century, foreign merchants built Western-style mansions in this area. We can see such mansions in the garden now.
グラバー園は異国情緒あふれる観光名所です。19 世紀に外国商人が西洋式の邸宅をこの地域に建てました。グラバー園でそのような邸宅を見ることができます。
Further Information
Glover Garden is located on the Minamiyamate hillside overlooking Nagasaki Harbor. In the 19th century, foreign merchants contributed to the modernization of Japan. Thomas Glover was one of these well-known merchants. The Glover House was designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan in 1961.

19 Oura Catholic Church 大浦天主堂
Introduction Oura Catholic Church is the oldest church in Japan. It was built in 1864, and was designated as a National Treasure in 1955.
大浦天主堂は日本最古の教会です。1864 年に建てられ、1955 年に国宝に指定されました。

Oura Catholic Church was constructed in 1864, and is the oldest church in Japan. It was designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan in 1933. After the damage caused by the atomic bomb, it was designated as a National Treasure in 1955. The stained glass made about 100 years ago is still there and is worth seeing.
大浦天主堂は 1864 年に建てられた日本最古の教会です。1933 年に国の重要文化財に指定され、原爆の被害後 1955年に国宝に指定されました。約 100 年前に作られたステンドグラスが現存しており一見の価値があります。

20 Spectacles Bridge 眼鏡橋
Introduction The Spectacles Bridge in Nagasaki City is the oldest stone arched bridge in Japan. People call it “Meganebashi” or the Spectacles Bridge because it looks like a pair of glasses.
長崎市の眼鏡橋は日本最古のアーチ式石橋です。それが眼鏡のように見えるので人々は“眼鏡橋”と呼んでいます。

The Spectacles Bridge in Nagasaki City, built in 1634, is the oldest arched stone bridge in Japan. It was built over the Nakashima River, which runs through the center of Nagasaki City. It is called “Meganebashi” because its two arches and their reflection on the water look like a pair of glasses. In 1982, the bridge was badly damaged by a great flood, but it was reconstructed.
長崎市の眼鏡橋は 1634 年に造られた日本最古のアーチ式石橋です。長崎市の中心を流れる中島川に架けられました。２つのアーチと水面に映るその影が眼鏡のように見えるので“眼鏡橋”と呼ばれています。1982 年の大水害によりひどく破壊されましたが、修復されました。

In Nagasaki a lot of churches were built in towns, by the seaside, in the mountains, and on islands. The architecture itself is precious. The churches also show us the history of Japanese Christianity. Some of them are on the 2007 UNESCO List of Tentative World Heritage Sites.

Isahaya Park is famous for azaleas and the double arched bridge called “Meganebashi.” In April a festival called the Isahaya Tsutsuji Festival is held in this park.

41 Emukae Sentoro Festival 江迎千灯籠まつり

The Sentoro Festival began about five hundred years ago in Emukae. A large number of lanterns are piled together to make a pyramid. The lanterns light up the night sky in summer.
千灯籠まつりは約500年前に江迎で始まりました。たくさんの灯籠が積み上げられ光のピラミッドを作ります。夏の夜空を照らし出します。
Further Information Originally people in Emukae displayed lanterns at their front doors during the festival. The number of the lanterns increased gradually, and now several thousand lanterns are piled into a pyramid in the center of the town. In the evening all the lanterns are lit and they create a fantastic sight in the summer night sky.
