World l ltypaper FRIDAYNOVEMBER18.2011 A12Most of Fukushima fallout 'fell in ocean'TOKYOMOSTof the radioactivefal lout from the disas-ter at the Fukushimanuclear plant dropped into theocean and began circling theplanet, Japanese researcherssaid yesterday.Up to 80 per cent of the caesi-um released by the FukushimaDai'ichi power plant landed inthe Pacific and made its way in-to other oceans around theworld, scientists at the Meteoro-logical Research Institute said. The rest has fallen on land inand around Fukushima, said MrHiroshi Takahashi, a researcherat the institute in Ibaraki,north-east of Tokyo.

"The results mean that theocean was more contaminatedthan land, although recent datahas shown that ocean pollutionresul ting from the accident waswel l below levels affect ing hu-mans," Mr Takahashi said.Researchers said the radioac-tive materials, including caesi-um-137, an isotope with ahalf-life of more than 30 years, were dispersed widely whenthey entered the oceans.Using computer simulations, they calculated that the materialwas first blown north-east overeastern Russia and Alaska, beforefalling into the Pacific and reach-ing the western coast ofthe main-land United States around March

17 - The materials were believed tohave completed their firstround-the-globe trip by March24, he said.Several previous studies, in-eluding one produced in Francelast month, have concluded thatthe fallout had been hugelydilnted by ocean currents and, except for near-shore species ,posed no discernible threat.Meanwhile, Japan yesterdayannounced its first ban on riceproduced near the crippledFukushima plant after samplesshowed radioactive contamina-tion well above legal limits. The auth ori ties in Fukushi-rna prefecture say rice producedneal' the stricken atomic-power

plant contained caesium theymeasured at 630 becquerels perkilogram. The government safe-ty limit is 500 becquerels.Chief Cabinet Secretary Os-amu Fujinmra ordered Fukushi-ma governor Yuhei Sato to re-strict shipments of rice from On-ami _ from where the sampleswere sourced. It is the first banon rice shipments since theFukushima plant was damagedby a massive quake and tsunamion March 11.Bans on food following thecr isis are not new but lice _ eat-en three times a day in manyhomes _ holds a special place inthe Japanese heart.Japanese-grown grain iswidely held to be superior to im-

ports, and is heavily protectedby massive tariffs aimed partially at propping up the nation'sageing farmers.None of the 840kgofrice produced at the Onami farm thiyear has been shipped to markets, local officials said,A l P
